The VIPP Report: Metro Disability Coalition continues to “Break Barriers” in the community

In their annual celebration they will recognize supporters & “shine” a spotlight on some unsung heroes

(Louisville, KY) The Metro Disability Coalition invites you to attend their 18^th Annual Breaking Barriers Spotlight Awards on Monday, March 19th from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at the Rudd Heart and Lung Center, 201 Abraham Flexner Way. There will be a reception at 5:00 pm to meet honorees and special guests.

The awards ceremony will honor community service workers, educators and youth who go above and beyond the call of duty to assist those in need. The Jefferson County Public Schools, (JCPS) student and teacher award winners are:

Elementary School Student: Paul Clark Elementary School Teacher: Ms. Deanna LeFan

Middle School Student: Zackary Estridge Middle School Teacher: Ms. Joan Allen

High School Student: Katherine Teston High School Teacher: Ms. Melanie Guillerman

This year’s Lifetime Achievement Award recipient is Billy Wright and the Merit Award will be presented to Josiah Johnson.

There will also be a presentation for Certificate of Merit and Image Award Certificate winners.

The Certificate of Merit winners are: Linda Irvin, Ed Price, Michael White

Image Award Certificate winners are: Eric French, Vitalis Lanshima, Tracey Thompson

This year’s keynote speaker will be Herb Henry. The owner of Competitors Edge Enterprise, a sports apparel company and current member of the Louisville Spokes & Spires, a local wheelchair basketball team. The former University of Louisville football player was shot twice in 1992 at the age of 18 at a party. One bullet hit near his lung and the other near his spine, paralyzing Henry. It took Henry many years to adjust and find his next calling. He put the football down and picked up a basketball and started to play wheelchair basketball. Motivating himself to move forward while inspiring many who still wanted to compete and had that competitor’s edge.

The Metro Disability Coalition is an organization of individuals and agencies in Louisville, KY who advocate for those with disabilities to have a better quality of life. The 501c (3) organization was established in 2001.

In 2017, at the 17^th annual awards ceremony Marques Maybin, ESPN Louisville radio show host and former University of Louisville basketball star was their keynote speaker.

The VIPP Report: LA Rams Right Guard Jamon Brown tees off in Louisville for a golf scramble benefiting the Coalition for the Homeless

(Louisville, KY) NFL star and Louisville native Jamon Brown, announces that he will create several signature events during his off-season, to support his hometown through his non-profit J.Brown Foundation. First on the calendar, is the inaugural Jamon Brown Foundation Celebrity Golf Scramble, in partnership with the Coalition for the Homeless.

The scramble will take place Monday, April 9th at Lake Forest Country Club. Registration will begin at 10:30 am sharp, and at 11:00 am Mayor Greg Fischer will kick-off the event with a welcome. Shortly after, those in attendance will have the unique opportunity to meet and greet former U of L and UK Legends, and other notable celebrities. There will be a 1:00 pm shotgun start.

We are receiving local and national Celebrity confirmations daily, and are happy to announce the following special guests joining Brown in attendance: Hall of Fame and former UofL Head Coach Denny Crum; 2000 Super Bowl Champion and former UofL star quarterback Chris Redman; 2013 NCAA Champions Russ Smith and Luke Hancock; UK basketball legend Jack “Goose” Givens; and NFL Super Bowl Champion and UK football star Jared Lorenzen, to name a few. Jamon Brown says “Anytime that I can get home and help my community that’s what I’m going to do. Brown attended Fern Creek High School in Louisville, KY. He received a scholarship to the University of Louisville, and played football from 2011 to the 2014 season, under Coaches Charlie Strong and Bobby Petrino respectively. He was an offensive line starter on the 2013 Sugar Bowl Champion Team. Brown was then picked in the third round of the 2015 NFL draft by the St. Louis and now Los Angeles Rams. This past season, he started all 16 games as their right guard, helping to lead the way for 2017 NFL Offensive MVP, Todd Gurley.

The VIPP Report: An associate at a Kroger Store in Louisville diagnosed with Hepatitis A virus

Tonight, Kroger Stores released that one of their employees has the Hepatitis A virus. The store in question is located at 4915 Dixie Hwy in Louisville? This is what i know. An associate at that store has been diagnosed with the Hepatitis A virus. While infected, this associate worked at the store in February in the produce department. As a result, some customers who visited the store and shopped the produce section from February 4 to February 28 may be at risk of exposure to the Hepatitis A virus.

Any produce purchased during that time from that Kroger should be discarded. Customers and others who may have consumed that produce should be familiar with the symptoms of Hepatitis A and seek medical attention, if needed. Kroger is cooperating fully with local and state health officials to identify associates and customers who may be at risk for infection.

Kroger released the following:

Kroger is committed to the health and well-being of all of our associates and customers. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) “Hepatitis A is a vaccine-preventable, communicable disease of the liver caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). It is usually transmitted person-to-person through the fecal-oral route or consumption of contaminated food or water. Hepatitis A is a self-limited disease that does not result in chronic infection. Most adults with hepatitis A have symptoms, including fatigue, low appetite, stomach pain, nausea, and jaundice, that usually resolve within 2 months of infection; most children less than 6 years of age do not have symptoms or have an unrecognized infection. Antibodies produced in response to hepatitis A infection last for life and protect against reinfection. The best way to prevent hepatitis A infection is to get vaccinated.” Customers who may have been exposed are encouraged to visit www.cdc.gov/hepatitis/hav for more information.

I pulled up the CDC link for you and this is what you need to watch out for in regards to symptoms.

Hepatitis A can have an abrupt onset of symptoms that can include:
- fever
- fatigue
- loss of appetite
- nausea
- abdominal discomfort
- dark urine
- yellowing of the skin and eyes
- pale colored stools
- and joint pain
People with hepatitis A virus infection may not have any signs or symptoms of the disease.
Older people are more likely to have symptoms than children.
About 70 percent of children younger than 6 who are infected have no symptoms.
In adults and older children, most infections are accompanied by symptoms and more than 70 percent of those cases include yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice).
Signs and symptoms usually last fewer than 2 months, although some people have prolonged or relapsing disease lasting as long as 6 months. Relapsing disease is usually less severe.
There is no chronic form of hepatitis A.

Note-some of them sound like flu-like symptoms so watch them closely if you have them.

According to the CDC-A blood test is needed to diagnose Hepatitis A. Talk to your doctor of someone from your local health department if you suspect that you have been exposed.

(Louisville, KY) THE FLEUR DE FLEA, one of Louisville’s largest outdoor flea markets announces a new event where you can enjoy great food that will tickle your palette with a southern flair along with some great local entertainment. You are invited to come down to Waterfront Park in downtown Louisville for the inaugural FOODIE FLEA. The event will be held on Saturday, April 14^th from 11:00 am-5:00 pm and admission is FREE.

Then on Sunday, April 15^th from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm many of the food trucks that participated in the FOODIE FLEA will park at various shelters throughout the city to feed the homeless as part of Mayor Greg Fischer’s “Give A Week”, a Week of Service where the community keeps a tally of their acts of compassion

The FOODIE FLEA, with over 25 of Louisville’s Finest Food trucks will be held in conjunction with THE FLEUR DE FLEA.

Three local craft breweries: Great Flood, Apocalypse and Country Boy will be sponsoring the event and serving their local beer all day.

The VIPP Report: Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church celebrates their 118th church anniversary

As they extend their “olive” branch to the community to come be a part of their celebration

(Louisville, KY) Mt. Olive has been a vital and a stable entity in the Smoketown neighborhood. On Sunday, February 25^th, Rev. Alex C. Shanklin and its members will celebrate their 118th Church Anniversary.

From their humble beginnings, as the founders of the church wanted to worship together gathered in a small house to presently in 2018, Mt. Olive is located on several acres on East Kentucky Street. They built the church and family life center. Then doing the impossible during difficult economic times, this congregation burned their mortgage when the loan was paid off. Mt. Olive has proven to be a leader in the growth of the community.

So, on Sunday, February 25^th, we invite you to celebrate the history of the church, its deep roots in the Smoketown community and their compassion to give back. This year’s theme says it all, “Love One Another,” from the scripture, I John 4:20-21.

The VIPP Report: The Louisville Basketball Investment & Support Group is announced

Groundwork is being laid to help Louisville become NBA ready. NBA to Lou announced Thursday morning that Dan Issel, former NBA and ABA all-star and All-American at the University of Kentucky, will be president of the Louisville Basketball Investment and Support Group. The group created was in 2016 to explore the opportunity to bring an NBA franchise to Louisville.

In a news release, the group announced that more than 20 local investors have contributed a combined $750,000 in startup capital to support the initiative, referred to as “NBA 2 Louisville,” that will help make Louisville and the Commonwealth
of Kentucky NBA-ready. The $750,000 represents the first round of a $3 million private placement memorandum (PPM).

So, the organization’s primary role is to ensure Louisville and Kentucky are ready should there be an opportunity for an NBA expansion franchise or if an existing team expresses interest in relocating.

The VIPP Report: Group of leaders and investors name Dan Issel as president in an effort to get a NBA franchise in Louisville

So, now I know that former NBA and ABA star and UK star Dan Issel is named president of the group.

The Louisville Basketball Investment and Support Group will collaboratively work to get a NBA franchise to the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

This will be a significant move to get all parties invested in the idea of a NBA team if a new team Is developed or a current one would like to move.

The VIPP Report: A “Top” cooking competition show will move to Kentucky for Season 16

“Top Chef” announces they are setting up shop in Lexington, Kentucky and will visit several cities in the Commonwealth including Louisville

With four episodes still ahead for the hit show “Top Chef” are now going where it’s never gone before. Do you think that’s odd that they took distinguishable theme from “Star Trek”. Weird or is it? The science fiction television series’ main character was Captain Kirk played by Actor William Shatner. He currently lives in Versailles, Kentucky near Lexington on a horse farm he owns. So, it appears that Shatner and the show will be neighbors for a while.

“Top Chef” is heading to Lexington, Kentucky for Season 16. The show will have a new batch of cheftestants battle it out for the coveted title of Top Chef with the thriving culinary scenes of Louisville, Lexington, and Lake Cumberland serving as the backdrop. Plus, with the Bluegrass State’s culinary traditions of bourbon and barbecue, this is sure to be the tastiest season of Top Chef yet.

So you better believe we’re excited to see what awesomeness Kentucky brings to Top Chef in Season 16. “We are always looking for rising culinary destinations and are looking forward to planting our flag in Kentucky and soaking up a diverse region of the country that we haven’t yet explored on Top Chef,” Shari Levine, Executive Vice President, Current Production, Bravo Media, said in a statement. “Kentucky has a strong food identity and we know our incoming chefs will be inspired by the bourgeoning culinary scene, known for its innovative takes on Southern cuisine, melding flavors, and use of Kentucky’s agricultural bounty.”

The VIPP Report: A team of leaders is expected to announce their involvement in bringing a NBA franchise to Louisville

With the looming question that many in Kentucky want to know can the state support a National Basketball Association, (NBA) team? The reason why I’m expanding the discussion from Louisville to the whole Commonwealth is because the players, (people involved) will have connections to both the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky. I’ve figured out several names of the people involved but It can change and/or be updated by the time the public is made aware of their venture.

Remember, I said that there will be an announcement this week. We only have a couple of days left in the week so I anticipate something in the next day if not today. At the time of the announcement we will have the name(s) of the people involved which will create a collaborative team of influential people playing all the positions needed to be a real competitor in the game of having a professional team in Louisville.

Like in the Field of Dreams, we built the KFC Yum! Center so will they come or do they need another arena to make it happen? We are getting closer to that announcement where the talk will turn into negotiations. They still have a long way to go but this is now going to be moving forward instead of backwards.

Valentine’s Day will never be the same if you give the gift love through music. You have only a few hours before you give your sweetheart a surprise. If you’re like many and time is not on your side consider taking them to a concert. Indiana native singer, songwriter and producer Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds will be performing at the Louisville Palace. The 11-time Grammy Award winning artist is known for his love ballads and with his dozens of hits throughout his 30 plus years in the entertainment industry. He’s known for working with stars like Toni Braxton , the late Whitney Houston, TLC and Midnight Star who started their group while attending Kentucky State University.

When you attend the show on February 14^th, you will hear songs like “Whip Appeal”, “When Can I See You Again”, “I Care About You” to “Tender Love”. He will take you down memory lane and he may sing some hits you had no idea he was affiliated with like “My, My, My” by Johnny Gill, “End of the Road” by Boyz II Men, or “Red Light Special” by TLC. The VIPP Report: The Breakfast Club’s DJ Envy will host Derby Soundstage 2018 in Louisville

With the Kentucky Derby just 86 days away, organizers are working hard behind the scenes planning some of the biggest events, galas and parties around the greatest two minutes in sports. I announced that Grammy Award winning hip-hop/rap artist Lil Wayne will be in concert along with Grammy-nominated newcomer Cardi B and R&B sensation K. Michelle will be in concert on Thursday, May 3^rd at Broadbent Arena for Derby Soundstage 2018.

I’ve just learned that the host of the event will be a member of the World’s Most Dangerous Morning Show, The Breakfast Club. The Derby City welcomes DJ Envy. He will host and dj the concert. Envy is the co-host of the nationally syndicated four and half hour morning show along with Angela Yee and Charlamagne Tha God. The show also showcases some his top music mixes. When he’s not on the show, he travels to host and dj some of the hottest parties and events. So, it’s make sense to have him be a part of the biggest week-long celebration in Louisville leading up to Derby 144 on the first Saturday in May.

All three artists performing have new material from Lil Wayne with Dedication 6, Cardi B with the remix of Finesse featuring Bruno Mars and K. Michelle with her album “The People I Used to Know”.

So, its Lil Wayne. Cardi B and K. Michelle in concert hosted by DJ Envy on Thursday, May 3rd in Broadbent Area. Tickets are on sale and they start at $70. The show will begin at 7:00 pm.

The Dr. Joseph McMillan National Conference on the Black Family in America

February marks African American History Month. It’s a time to recognize those who worked tirelessly to break barriers when it was unacceptable and not well received to advance to achieve.

The Dr. Joseph McMillan National Conference on the Black Family in America will convene in Louisville on Feb. 23 and Feb. 24 to celebrate the achievements and to acknowledge, discuss and to put words into action that there are still disparities that people of color still need to overcome.

The conference will be held at the Louisville Central Community Center, (LCCC). This year’s theme, “Elevating the Health and Safety of the Black Family and Community”. The mother of Trayvon Martin, Sybrina Fulton will be the keynote speaker for the brunch. Trayvon’s case sparked national conversation and protests with the concerns of racism, gun violence, stereotyping to profiling.

In February of 2012, 17-year-old Trayvon was walking back from a convenience store in Sanford, Florida after purchasing candy and something to drink. He encountered George Zimmerman. He said that he killed the teen in self-defense after a scuffle. Zimmerman saw Martin in the neighborhood and did not recognize him so he called police.

According to Zimmerman, the neighborhood had several robberies and he thought Martin was a suspect. After, contacting police he got into an altercation with the teen and shot Trayvon in the chest.

Initially, Zimmerman was not charged because police said there was no evidence but due to the national media coverage Zimmerman was charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter but later acquitted by a jury in 2013.

Trayvon Martin would have been 23 years old today, (Feb. 5^th).

The VIPP Report: It’s a Triple Crown lineup during Kentucky Derby events

(Louisville, KY) Down the Stretch we come…We are just 119 days and counting away from the 144th running of the Kentucky Derby and there’s already a race to get events on the calendar. We’ll I have my first announcement and it’s a good one for rap and hip-hop fans. Let’s add a concert to the many events you can enjoy while experiencing the greatest two minutes in sports. I have a feeling a few of our guests will arrive in town a little earlier for this show.

This artist released Dedication 6 on Christmas Day….now I can announce Lil Wayne will be in Louisville for a concert on Thursday, May 3rd. The Grammy Award winning hip hop star is no stranger to Louisville.. He won a Grammy with late artist/producer and Louisville native Stephen “Static Major” Garrett for Lollipop. Wayne was in Louisville in April of 2017 and performed before a sold out audience. He decided not to come alone.

He’s bringing a young artist that’s making her name known in the hip hop game. You’ve seen her on Love and Hip Hop New York and now she has this smash hit, Bodak Yellow, which is excelling her music career. Cardi B will join Lil Wayne in Broadbent Arena. She recently worked with Bruno Mars on the remix of his hit song Finesse.

If you look at your calendar that’s the same day as the Pegasus Parade…the official kickoff to Derby weekend.

From workshops to live entertainment and it takes place along the Old Walnut Street strip

(Louisville, KY) Legacies Unlimited in partnership with the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, (KCAAH) & the University of Louisville Archives & Special Collections presents Celebrating the Legacy of Black Louisville on Friday, January 26^th and 27^th at KCAAH located at 1701 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd formerly known as Old Walnut Street. This year’s theme is “Linking the past to the present.”

On Friday, January 26^th from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm there will be a reception and the opening of exhibits. There will be five works on exhibit: Two Centuries of Black Louisville…the Exhibit; The Expressionism of Victor Sweatt; Louisville Entertainers & Musicians Exhibit Part 1; The textile designs of “Bag Lady: Zephra May Miller and The Folk Art of Louisville’s Marvin Finn.

From 7:30 pm to 10:00 pm KCAAH will transform into the most prominent club housed on Old Walnut Street known today as Muhammad Ali Blvd. In the 1940’s and 50’s everyone would dress up and head down to the Top Hat Club. Jazz would be bellowing out into the streets from some of the greatest jazz artists of their time. So, by linking the past to the present, it’s Jazz at the Top Hall featuring vocalist/musician Gayle King and Hammond B-3 along with Kendall Carter and his quintet. General admission is $30.00 per person.

On Saturday, January 27^th starting at 9:00 am there will be workshops discussing the historic 2^nd Baptist Church in New Albany, IN entitled Pathway to Freedom. The free workshop takes you back in time when the church was a beacon of hope and served as a pathway to the Underground Railroad. Following that workshop will be a jug band music session. German & Irish immigrants along with slaves created this unique sound that left a lasting impression on music’s culture.

At 12:00 pm, guests will get to enjoy The Listening Room. Music from the 1950’s, 60’s & 70’s recordings from Louisville’s African American entertainers and musicians provided by the Soulful Sounds of Derbytown.

To close out the weekend, it’s The Walnut Street Revue featuring Louisville native Vic Frierson. It’s A Song for You: A Tribute to the Life & Music of Luther Vandross. Frierson will celebrate the life and music of Luther Vandross. The event begins at 7:30 pm with Tony Fish & Band. Hosted by WLKY-TV’s Ann Bowdan. General admission tickets are $40 per person. The VIPP Report: Mystery author Sue Grafton dies after a two year battle with cancer

(Louisville, KY) The author known for her masterful books of mystery starting each with a letter of the alphabet has died. Sue Grafton died on Thursday after a two year battle with cancer. WHAS11 spoke to the author in August in Hopkinsville at the solar eclipse.

Grafton’s Hometown Hero Banner was dedicated in 2016. The 27′ x 40′ banner is facing the east wall of the Springhill Suites/Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott at 132 E. Jefferson Street.

The Louisville native went to Atherton High School and later went on to graduate from the University of Louisville.

Grafton’s novels have been published in twenty-eight countries and in twenty-six languages.

The author’s family just posted a statement on her public figure page on social media. Here’s their statement:

“Hello Dear Readers. This is Sue’s daughter, Jamie. I am sorry to tell you all that Sue passed away last night after a two year battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family, including her devoted and adoring husband Steve. Although we knew this was coming, it was unexpected and fast. She had been fine up until just a few days ago, and then things moved quickly. Sue always said that she would continue writing as long as she had the juice. Many of you also know that she was adamant that her books would never be turned into movies or TV shows, and in that same vein, she would never allow a ghost writer to write in her name. Because of all of those things, and out of the deep abiding love and respect for our dear sweet Sue, as far as we in the family are concerned, the alphabet now ends at Y.”

So, now we know that there will be no “Z” in Grafton’s series. It will end with “Y”.

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer just posted this statement on his social media page:

“The world has lost a great talent and prolific author in Sue Grafton — and in Louisville we have lost a citizen, friend, neighbor, a master gardener and hometown hero. Her legacy will live on through her words, which will entertain and thrill readers for generations to come.”

This year’s McDaniel Bluitt Hope Award recipient is Kentucky Senator for 33^rd District Gerald A. Neal. “He works tirelessly in the community. He was candid with them and helped them understand what it takes to be a leader in the community. History

West Louisville Boys Choir began in November 1990. The choir is directed by McDaniel Bluitt, a retired vocal music teacher with twenty-nine (29) years of experience. He received his B. M. ED. from the University of Louisville School Of Music and a Masters in Counseling from Western Kentucky University. The Boys Choir has performed throughout the commonwealth, for mayors, governors other national dignitaries. The Boys Choir’s first European Tour established international prominence in Paris, France and London, England. They received a superior rating during their first international music competition in the Bahamas. They were also awarded first place in the Music Festival at Sea.

The West Louisville Girls Choir made its debut in November 2002. The choir is directed by Mrs. Mamie Bluitt who received her B.M.ED. from the University of Louisville School of Music. The Girls Choir is also a performing choir. Some of its more notable performances are: Governor Patton’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration in Frankfort, Kentucky, ECHO, Women for Women Conference and at Cincinnati’s National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Their first Southwestern Tour to Texas was held in 2010.

(Louisville, KY) NFL star Jamon Brown and his foundation (J. Brown Foundation) are teaming up with WHAS11 TV and the Homeless Coalition For The “#502StepUp” for the Holidays Fundraiser.

The goal of the telethon is to raise funds during the Holiday Season while bringing awareness to Youth and Young Adult Homelessness. It’s a trying time, especially during the winter months, for those that do not have a permanent place to call home.

The J. Brown Foundation is asking the City of Louisville to “Step Up” and be a part of the solution, and assist those who just need a little help during the holidays. Currently, there is a spike in youth and young adult homelessness between the ages of 16-24 in Louisville, and Jamon is rolling up his sleeves to help shed light on this issue.

In Jefferson County alone, there’s over 800 new cases per year of youth that are considered homeless for various reasons. The statistics are staggering and agencies like the Homeless Coalition are overwhelmed with requests this time of year.

“The J. Brown Foundation is committed to assisting our community partners by investing time, energy and resources, while using our platform to bring awareness to issues such as Youth and Young Adult Homelessness. Even the smallest donations go a long way, and we need the city’s support to raise funds during the Holidays to propel the Homeless Coalition to their goal of eliminating Youth Homelessness by 2020,” says Jamon Brown.

The Metro Disability Coalition works tirelessly in the community to help move toward a fully accessible community for all disabled individuals.

From developing confidence to independence the Metro disability Coalition is an organization of individuals and agencies in Louisville, KY who assist those with disabilities a better quality of life. The 501c(3) organization was established in 2001.

In March of each year, we host the Breaking Barriers Spotlight Awards. The ceremony gives us a chance to say thank you people for their commitment, recognize educators, healthcare, service, community and youth organizations for their desire to enrich the lives of gifted and talented students.

In 2017, at the 17^th annual awards ceremony former University of Louisville basketball star Marques Maybin was our keynote speaker. He played for the Cardinals from 1997 to 2001. In 2003, he was in a motorcycle accident in his hometown of Clarksville, TN. Maybin was paralyzed from the waist down. He passionately spoke to the audience about his setback but also how he was able to achieve and get back to his day to day routine while adjusting to being in a wheelchair. Now, he’s one of the top on-air radio personalities for ESPN Louisville.

Records the Detroit native released her first studio album on August 4^th and its garnering popularity at a rapid pace on social media platforms. On Sunday, October 29^th, the Brooklyn Queen will travel to Louisville to host a Halloween party.

(LOUISVILLE, KY) The Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, (KCAAH) in collaboration with Simmons College of Kentucky presents: Miss Ida B. Wells, a play by Endesha Ida Mae B. Wells and directed by Nefertiti Burton. There will be two performances on Sunday, October 22^nd at the KCAAH located at 1701 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd. The afternoon matinee begins at 3:30 p.m. and the evening show will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Ida B. Wells was a civil rights pioneer and one of the founding members of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, (NAACP), and journalist. She was very influential because she had the gift of writing but she never received money for craft. That untold story brings you to Louisville. Rev. Dr. William J. Simmons, born a slave became the publisher of the American Baptist Newspaper, President of the National Press Association and the second president of the college we know today as Simmons College of Kentucky, a HBCU. Rev. Simmons paid Wells for her stories and made her a correspondent for the paper. Wells went on to be known as the “Princess of the Press” and traveled to write for the American Baptist.

A TRIBUTE CONCERT IS ANNOUNCED REMEMBERING LOUISVILLE NATIVE STATIC MAJOR, THE MAN WHO PENNED HITS FOR MUSIC’S BIGGEST STARS

FANS WILL HEAR FOR FIRST-TIME NEVER RELEASED MUSIC

(Louisville, KY) Stephen Garrett also known in the entertainment world as “Static Major” made a lot of hits for artists like Lil Wayne, Aaliyah, Jamie Foxx, Diddy, Pretty Ricky, Ginuwine, Nicole Wray and Playa in which he was a member. The Grammy Award winning artist, producer and songwriter died on February 25, 2008 at the age of 33, leaving an unimaginable legacy and a catalog of never heard music.

On Saturday, November 25, 2017 in Static Major’s hometown of Louisville, Kentucky family, friends and fans will come together to be a part of the Louisville Legend’s tribute concert. LOUISVILLE, KY – The Lincoln Foundation in partnership with Dick Sisto, Ken Clay, Owsley Brown III, Louisville Public Media, Owsley Brown II Family Foundation, The Kentucky Center, Mike Balter Mallets and Vandoren Saxophone Reeds proudly announces the inaugural Lionel Hampton Tribute Concert Showcase. The event will take place in the Bomhard Theater of the Kentucky Center on Saturday October 7^th at 7:30 p.m. The concert will be a live-recording.

Dick Sisto, on vibraphone, is the artistic and music director who will lead a group of featured jazz artists who will pay tribute to jazz greats past and present. They include Barry Ries, trumpet; Bobby Broom, guitar; Bobby Floyd, keyboards; Jim Anderson, bass; Art Gore, drums and special guest Harry Skoler, clarinet (Berklee College of Music). These experienced artists have played with jazz greats such as Lionel Hampton, Sonny Rollins, Count Basie, Benny Golson, and George Benson.

Louisville native Lionel Hampton was born on April 20, 1908. He popularized the vibraphone and played with the Benny Goodman Quartet before becoming a successful bandleader. Hampton received honors from Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. He performed well into his 90s before passing away in 2002.

Mayor Greg Fischer and the city of Louisville have embraced this event and hope to honor this hometown jazz great and innovator with an official Lionel Hampton dedication day. The event will also feature a showcase of young percussion students on the vibraphone and drums. A music scholarship will be considered for one of the participating youth.

Tickets start at $30.00 and they are still available at the Kentucky Center Box Office. Proceeds from the event will benefit Lincoln Foundation’s signature Whitney M. YOUNG Scholars Program^®. During the concert, a representative from Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Kentucky will make a special announcement that will impact the youth in the scholars program.

Lexington, KY— In the hit stage play, My War Wounds, playwright and visionary, Leslie Pryor highlights the warning signs, symptoms and struggles of individuals with brain tumors, as well as the struggles and symptoms of a disease many families know all too well—breast cancer. After so much open dialogue the stage play became a resource tool for some 1200 people.

There will be an encore presentation of My War Wounds on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at 6 p.m. at the Lyric Theatre & Cultural Arts Center, 300 E Third St, Lexington KY 40508. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. We are excited to announce that comedian Laronda Clay will be our show’s host and saxophonist Benny J will perform during the evening. There will be vendors, plenty of food, a photographer to capture special moments, door prizes and plenty of information about breast cancer for organizations on location in case our guests have any questions.

Headaches, nausea, blurred or double vision, dizziness, trouble walking all could be something minor or symptoms to something so much bigger. So, when 13-year-old Alijah Owens started experiencing migraines and falling down at school without warning, he knew something was wrong. Soon, his eyes turned red and glossy, his face became disfigured and his hearing declined.

Initially, doctors misdiagnosed it as an allergy or vertigo but unfortunately Alijah had a massive brain tumor. Parents at this point, normally have more questions than answers when they get the diagnosis. For Alijah and his family, it resulted in more than 30 hours of surgery, months of therapy and having to learn to walk all over again. He was literally in a fight—a war—for his life.

According to the American Brain Tumor Association, brain tumors are the most common form of tumors among children under the age of 25 and represent 20% of all childhood cancers. Many have no idea of these statistics until after the diagnosis is given.

My War Wounds, is a true testament of never knowing what a person is dealing with when they are not at school, church and/or work. Many suffer in silence and have no outlet to relieve their stress and anxiety which many times can be misdirected. This inspirational story of courage and fear, love and hate is sure to take audience members on an emotional roller coaster they’ll never forget. When a mother, who is facing her own share of health challenges, is confronted with a life-threatening sickness of her daughter, will she keep the faith or let her family be ripped to shreds?

(Louisville, KY) It’s all about the bragging rights in the All-Star Showdown 2017 on Sunday, September 3^rd at Old Male High School Gym, 911 S. Brook Street (corner of Brook and Breckenridge). Tickets are $10 for adults and $3 for youth 12 and under.

At 3:00 p.m. there will be a championship league game. So, the East End Team of Louisville, Lou-Ville Champs will go up against the Buffalo All Star Pro Team from Lexington coached by 1978 NCAA Champion and Kentucky Wildcat James Lee. It’s the battle for bragging rights. During halftime fans, will get to enjoy a dunk contest. You need to be in attendance to see the unbelievable dunks that will be attempted.

You will get your money’s worth with this event. A second game has been added. It’s the All-Star Game featuring former NBA & NCAA champion for the Kentucky Wildcats Derek Anderson, former Louisville Cardinals stars BJ Flynn, Nate Johnson and Alvin Sims will participate in the game. We’ve also confirmed that two Louisville Metro Police Officers Joplin Johnson and Thomas Coleman will play in this game. Louisville native and NBA star D’Angelo Russell graciously sponsored the official All Star Showdown Nike uniforms for the 5pm game.

Two former University of Louisville athletes Tony Williams and Mario Urrutia along with their dynamic teams created this concept to give back to the youth in the community. Williams played 10 years in the European professional basketball league and works tirelessly to assist the youth in the community. After playing for the Cardinals, Urrutia played in the NFL and currently helps other youth seeking the same success by developing them at the Super Student Athletes, LIFE Center. They provide guidance both on and off the football field. Throughout the day, you will see youth be showcased in various ways so they can be exposed to positive figures in the community.

You will also get to see Kentucky State University’s Marching Band. They will travel from Frankfort to be a part of the game. There will be a step show during the HBCU halftime explosion.

This event is for the sharp shooters because there will be a Montgomery Chevrolet 3 Point Contest. Former Harlem Globetrotter, Dirt Bowl legend and Louisville native Gerald Gray will participate in Beat the Pro Challenge.

There will even be a $1,000 Lawyer for the City Half Court Long Shot Challenge sponsored by Attorney Brandon Lawrence.

This family friendly event will not only recognize the youth in the community but due to Hurricane Harvey, organizers felt the need to assist with aid by holding a moment of silence at the start of the game and introducing Derek Anderson’s AOK Foundation for hurricane relief fund and explain how you can help throughout the event. Organizers have family and friends affected and want to let them know they care.

The response has been overwhelming when it comes to giving back. Members of the Aspire Academy, which features some of the top high school prospects in the country will be in attendance. Hoops for Christ Philip Morrison will do a dribble dance routine with youth on the court. A Celebration of Unity, Art, Culture, & History Across the African Diaspora

The 5^th Annual African Heritage Festival will be held in various locations around the city of Louisville Friday, August 25^th through Sunday August 27^th. The event celebrates unity, culture, art and history across the African Diaspora.

The festival is hosted by Bridge Kids International, the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage (KCAAH), the Kentucky Old School Sports Association (KOSSA), HoneyTree Publishing, and Moments to Remember.

The African Heritage Festival is organized by a dynamic team representing a variety of countries and backgrounds. The whole city is invited to this unifying event that will be fun, educational, and certainly full of flavor. Last year’s festival drew approximately 2000 participants, and with this year’s new additions, we only anticipate that the celebration will continue to grow.

Opening Ceremony — Friday, August 25th – Kentucky Center for African American Heritage:

Opening Ceremony will kick off the weekend with a reception and program honoring African heritage, culture, history and art.

Festival Day — Saturday, August 26th

The African Heritage Festival will be a joyous event for the whole family with great food, music, dance, sports, theater, fashion, cultural demonstrations, children’s activities, resources for healthy living and so much more. What a great way to honor African, African-American and Caribbean cultures in Louisville and add to the revitalization efforts in the historic Russell neighborhood. All activities are free and open to the public. Some highlights include:

8:00am: Soccer Tournament Begins – Champions Park, 2050 River Road soccer tournament held at Champions Park, organized by KOSSA, featuring 10 teams from at least 5 states with players representing 20 countries of origin
10:00am: Parade Begins – a parade of marching bands, dance teams, bicycle groups, community organizations and more down Muhammad Ali Blvd. starting at 9^th Street and ending at 18^th Street where the festival will take place in front of the KCAAH
10:00am – 12:00pm: the widely beloved Books & Breakfast!
11:00am: Festival activities begin and will feature live entertainment, “Under the Story Tree” storytelling fest, and other children’s activities. Food, merchandise and informational vendors from across the city and the surrounding region will be in attendance.
12:00pm: Basketball tournament begins – a street basketball tournament presented by KOSSA and the organizers of the Dirt Bowl
12:00pm – 5:00pm: A how-to fair with community members teaching useful and fun things
7:00pm: Festival ends

Sunday, August 27th – Invoke… Called by the Ancestors (performance begins 2:30 pm)

This year, we are excited to announce that a third day will be incorporated into the festival! Please come out on Sunday, August 27th for “Invoke … Called by the Ancestors” performed by Sankofa Dance Theater. The Baltimore based dance company presents world-class, authentic African art in the form of dance, music, and folkways for national and international audiences. Sankofa Dance Theater’s work is rooted in healing and bringing intercultural understanding to the global village while staying true to the definition of the word “Sankofa” — which means to learn from the past in an effort to build for the future. The show will begin promptly at 2:30pm and will feature a special appearance by spoken word artists Hannah Drake and Tytianna Wells smith –performing A Mother’s Tears. Tickets for Sunday’s are available on Eventbrite and at Better Days Records West (Lyles Mall). Proceeds will go towards the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage. The African Heritage Festival was founded in 2013 when Bridge Kids International approached KCAAH about hosting the event at the Center as a way to build relationships among and celebrate Louisville’s African Diaspora. In four years, the event has grown from a mostly indoor event to a street festival and has more than doubled in size. Bridge Kids continues to coordinate the overall planning, but the African Heritage Festival has truly become the pride of all of the presenting organizations, planning committee, participants and volunteers.

The Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, (KCAAH), presents the Sankofa Dance Theater on Sunday, August 27^th at 2:30pm at the center which is located at 1701 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd.

The theater group will perform Invoke … called by the Ancestors. The name of the group “Sankofa” means you need to learn about the past, so you can build for the future. The Baltimore based dance company presents world-class, authentic African art in the form of dance, music, and folkways for national and international audiences. The theater’s work is rooted in healing and bringing intercultural understanding to the global village while staying true to their mission.

There will also be a special performance by Hannah Drake and Tytianna Wells Smith. They will perform “A Mother’s Tears”.

ANNUAL EVENING OF JAZZ

(Louisville, KY). The 22^nd Annual Evening of Jazz featuring the Ansyn Banks Quintet will be held on Friday, August 18, 2017 at the KCD Theater, 4100 Springdale Road. Proceeds from the event benefit the Whitney M. YOUNG Scholars Program^®. A pre-concert reception with hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar will begin at 5:30 p.m. The program and concert, which features the Ansyn Banks Quintet performing a tribute to jazz great Kenny Dorham, begins at 7:00 p.m.

As a jazz trumpeter, singer and composer, Kenny Dorham played with such jazz greats as Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Billy Eckstine and Mercer Ellington. He was best known for his album entitled Afro-Cuban which showcased his interest in combining Latin music with jazz.

Ansyn Banks, an associate professor of jazz trumpet at the University of Louisville School of Music, teaches jazz styles and analysis, jazz improvisation and directs the university’s jazz combo program. He has performed with jazz legends such as Dick Oatts, Harry Pickens, Chuck Marohnic, Hank Marr, Gene Walker and Melvin Rhyne as well as some of the biggest names in entertainment like the Mighty Dells, The Temptations, Aretha Franklin and the Four Tops.

Prior to the concert, Lincoln Foundation will present the prestigious Spirit of Excellence Award which is annually given to a local individual who exemplifies an active commitment to education, human/community service, and leadership. This year’s recipient is Cathe Dykstra, Chief Possibility Officer and President & CEO of Family Scholar House, for her role in “changing lives, families and communities through education”. YOUNG Scholars Program® annually serves approximately 460 students in grades 7-12 and over a six-year period prepares them for high school and college graduation. The college-prep program has demonstrated successful outcomes with Scholars earning over 361 undergraduate and graduate degrees since 2000. It’s the new anthem for ladies around the world and now R&B/Soul star Mary J. Blige will take her new album entitled “Strength of a Woman” on tour by the same name.

The Grammy and platinum selling artist will be at the KFC Yum! Center on Saturday, September 23^rd. Doors will open around 7:00pm and the show will begin at 8:00pm. Artists Joe and Stokley, who was the lead singer of Mint Condition, will be a part of the tour and scheduled to open for Blige in Louisville.

Tickets range from $51.50 to $99.50 and they go on sale Friday, July 14^th at 12:00pm.

FOOTBALL SEASON IS JUST A FEW WEEKS AWAY GET YOUR CHILD READY BY PARTICIPATING IN DEION BRANCH’S SKILLS AND DRILLS CAMP

(Louisville, KY) Former University of Louisville and two-time Super Bowl champ and SB XXXIX MVP Deion Branch returns to Louisville to host his 8th Annual Skills & Drills Football Camp. It will be on Saturday, July 8th at Baptist Health Performance, 12101 Sycamore Station Place. Registration begins at 8:00 am and the camp is from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.

The camp is for youth ages 7 to 18. The registration fee is only $50, which includes: lunch, goodie bag, t-shirt and personal instruction from Branch and some of his U of L teammates and friends.

Branch says “The DB Foundation really enjoys this camp. We get to watch young athletes develop their skills. We’ve watched several players throughout their football season and they’ve excelled and we are excited to see them return to work on another part of their game. LOUISVILLE, KY – The Lincoln Foundation in partnership with Dick Sisto, Ken Clay, Owsley Brown III, Louisville Public Media, Owsley Brown II Family Foundation, The Kentucky Center, Mike Balter Mallets and Vandoren Saxophone Reeds proudly announces the First, Annual Lionel Hampton Tribute Concert Showcase. The event will take place in the Bomhard Theater of the Kentucky Center on Saturday Oct. 7.

Dick Sisto, on vibraphone, is the artistic and music director who will lead a group of featured jazz artists who will pay tribute to jazz greats past and present. They include Barry Ries, trumpet (Lionel Hampton); Bobby Broom, guitar (Sonny Rollins); Bobby Floyd, keyboards (Count Basie); Jim Anderson, bass (Benny Golson); Art Gore, drums (George Benson) and special guest Harry Skoler, clarinet (Berklee College of Music).

Tickets went on sale at 10 am Friday for comedian/actor Dave Chappelle’s pop up show in Louisville and at 2:30 pm that afternoon, I’ve received word that the show is sold out for the Louisville Palace show.

Chappelle will be in Louisville on Thursday, June 8^th. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the show will begin at 7:00 p.m.

The VIPP Report: Miss Kentucky’s Outstanding Teen is crowned in Louisville

(LOUISVILLE, KY) The Miss Kentucky’s Outstanding Teen Pageant (MKYOT) was held in Louisville May 26-28 at the Kentucky Center for the Arts. On Saturday, May 28th, a panel of judges selected the young lady who will represent Kentucky in the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Pageant.

Miss Capital City’s Outstanding Teen, Abigail Quammen was crowned and now she will prepare to represent the Bluegrass. The 17 year- old senior attends Lexington Catholic High School. She dazzled the judges and the audience with her rendition of “Astonishing”.

Dr. Ashley Anderson, Executive Director, MKYOT Program and her team of pageant professionals will work with Abigail to help prepare her for the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Pageant held July 22nd-29th in Orlando, FL.

The Miss Kentucky’s Outstanding Teen Scholarship Program celebrated their 20th anniversary of preparing Kentucky women to become strong leaders in their perspective communities. The program continues to exemplify the high standards of scholarship, style, service and success.

To celebrate the accomplishments of the program, 2017 Miss America Savvy Shields was the keynote speaker for the “Meet the Miss American” luncheon where Miss America 2000 and Kentucky native, Heather French Henry served as the emcee.

The VIPP Report: Louisville native Bryson Tiller adds a second show in his hometown

Someone mentioned to me yesterday that Louisville native Bryson Tiller will have two show in Louisville as part of his “Set It Off” tour. I looked at that schedule multiple times and just didn’t see it.

Then in the last hour the Grammy-nominated artist announced three popup shows and there it was “LOUISVILLE”.

Tiller will start the popups tomorrow, June 1st with The Roxy in Los Angeles, CA. The second on will be June 3rd in New York at the Bowery Ballroom and then his last popup will be in his hometown of Louisville, KY. He will be at the Mercury Ballroom on Wednesday, June 7th.

The Mercury Ballroom is an intimate venue where the patrons stand. It holds around 900 people.

The VIPP Report: Louisville native Bryson Tiller announces “Set It Off” tour

His “Trap Soul” album took the music industry by storm. Now, Louisville native and Grammy nominated artist Bryson Tiller announces his “Set It Off” tour and of course his hometown is on the list.

Fans will see Bryson on Saturday, September 16 at the KFC Yum! Center as part of his North American tour. Metro Boomin and R&B singer H.E.R. will open the show.

His new album “True to Self” is already getting rave reviews and maybe ranked of No. 1 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart. He surprised fans by releasing it on May 26^th about a month earlier than its anticipated date.

I will monitor that ranking when it comes out this Sunday, June 4. This is only Bryson’s aka Pen Griffey’s second album. The RCA artist has been singing and rapping since his high school days at Iroquois High and in 2014 his single “Don’t” became a hit thanks to the internet and his new found followers. Artists like Drake and Timbaland vibed on Tiller’s sound and that’s what got labels interested.

Now, he’s had hits like “Sorry Not Sorry”, “Exchange” and his current hit “Somethin Tells Me”.

Bryson is already collecting plenty of hardware for his trophy case. In 2016, he won Best new artist, Best R& B/Pop artist at the BET Awards. He also won Best New R & B artist at the iHeart Radio Music Awards this year. His nominations have been adding up too from the Grammy Awards to the Billboard Music Awards.

The tour kicks off on June 23^rd in Los Angeles in the Staple Center.

Tickets for the September 16^th show in Louisville start at $39.50. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the concert will begin at 7:30 p.m.

(Louisville, KY) It’s the return of the Super Hoop High School All-Star Seniors Classic. In the state where players have the reputation of competitive high flying and raining three-pointers from all over the court. The region’s top players will match up and to measure their skill set before heading to the respective collegiate teams.

On Saturday, May 27th, old school meets new school at Old Male High School located at 911 S. Brook Street. Starting at 1:00 p.m. various championship veteran players will coach the future all-stars.

There will be a Doctors of Dunk Contest judged by of course some of the legendary sky walkers in this area. It’s only right for them to judge the next group of stars entering their tight brotherhood of basketball dominance. If that’s not enough entertainment. Back by popular demand is the Celebrity All-Star Peace game. Area celebrities, current and former professionals will lace them up “4 Peace”.

This is a family friendly event, so we did not forget about our young sports fans. There will be a peewee contest. All peewee participants will receive two Louisville Bats 2017 season tickets.

This classic has seen some of the best when it comes to fundamentally sound players that’s have elevated their skills to winner NBA and NCAA championships. The urban style of the game is quick, streaky with plenty of flair.

The Super Hoop Classic is proud of its alumni like Miami Heat and University of Kentucky champion Derek Anderson, Kentucky’s High School Sweet 16 Tournament 1997 MVP and a member of Eastern’s championship team Ashley Olinger; former International league player, NCAA coach and current high school assistant coach in South Carolina Cypheus Bunton; Kentucky’s Mr. Basketball , Kentucky Boys State Champion and Super Hoop Slam Dunk Champ Jermaine Brown, Dwayne Morton: NBA second round pick to Golden State in 1994, UofL ‘s all-time leader in three-point field goal percentage and Kentucky Mr. Basketball; Anthony Grundy: played in the NBA and Italian League, collegiately he played on North Carolina State and he was a Super Hoop three-point contest champ. This will be an entertaining and action-packed game with a NBA feel by having neo-soul, R & B and hip hop music playing during the game.

Throughout the game there will be entertainment from performances from all genres of music to spoken word and performances by some of the city’s hottest dance teams.

Legendary sports announcer and the voice of the Dirt Bowl Cornell Bradley will keep the action going with play by play commentary of the games as well as friendly picking on spectators in the stands.
