574649744_IMG_6983_289931

By Sherlene Shanklin

(Louisville, KY) The Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church made the decision some 34 years ago that Rev. Alex Shanklin would serve as the pastor of the congregation.  On Sunday, October 14, 2018 we are requesting your presence as we celebrate during our 11:00 am service.

It’s been a good year for Mt. Olive, from their humble beginnings, as the founders of the church wanted to worship together gathered in a small house to presently in 2018, Mt. Olive is located on several acres on East Kentucky Street. They built the church and family life center.  Then doing the impossible during difficult economic times, this congregation burned their mortgage when the loan was paid off.  Mt. Olive has proven to be a leader in the growth of the community under the guidance of Rev. Shanklin.

There will be a mid-week service if you are unable to attend Sunday’s service.  It will be held on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at 6:00 p.m.

Please post and/or announce Mount Olive’s 34th Pastor’s Anniversary celebrating service not only for the church but the community, especially the Smoketown neighborhood where the church is located.  If you would like to setup an interview with Rev. The VIPP Report: Kin Killin’ Kin Artist James Pate Visits Louisville

James Pate.png

(Louisville, KY) The Kentucky Center for African American Heritage is exhibiting James Pate’s KKK Series Kin Killin’ Kin Traveling Art Exhibition September 14 – November 12, 2018. The artist James Pate will give a gallery talk during the opening reception on Friday, September 21, 2018, 6:00 – 9:00 pm. Pate will discuss what motivated him to create Kin Killin’ Kin featuring scenes of young African-American men donned in Ku Klux Klan hoods committing acts of violence, creating an overt comparison between gang violence and the terrorism of the KKK. Pate says, “the numbers of Blacks killed by other Blacks since reconstruction far exceeds those lynched by “Whites”. Sadly, this pattern continued year after year, up to the present day”. The Center for Disease Control cites homicide as the leading cause of death for Black males between the age of 15 and 34.

Pate’s Kin Killin’ Kin is designed to shock and stop the viewer. Pate says “mainly, I want kids to pause and reflect”.

To close out the exhibition, a Youth Voices Against Violence Forum will held at the Heritage Center on Saturday, November 3, 2018, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. During this forum, District 15 Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton will facilitate a panel of youth from our community who will discuss the themes of gun violence and other forms of violence occurring in our society today. This panel of youth will examine the themes of gun violence within the context of public health, bystander action, healing through arts, and mobilizing for change through community dialogues.

Kin Killin’ Kin curator Willis Bing Davis says, “art holds the power to promote change”. For Davis, that’s partly because art is a language that everyone understands. “It is the universal connection of the art,” he said. “Art is one of the things that touches all of us.” Art is also a liberating language, he says. “Sometimes the art can say something that we can’t say in words.”

The Heritage Center views this exhibition as a powerful tool to promote community dialogue and community action by delving deeper into the themes of the exhibit, highlighting current efforts in violence prevention in Metro Louisville and cultivating the youth voice in the community. The Heritage Center recognizes the increase in gun violence and its impact on the communities it serves and presents Kin Killin’ Kin for the community to take action.

If you would like to setup an interview and/or tour the exhibit, contact Sherlene Shanklin with VIPP Communications at 502-295-0435 or by email info@vippcommunications.com.  We hope you are able to post on your calendars so your viewers and/or listeners get an opportunity to see the exhibit while in Louisville.

The VIPP Report: After 40 years with Starbucks Howard Schultz will step down

HowardSchultzviaStarbucks

JUST IN: The visionary and iconic leader of Starbucks will bid his farewell after 40 years.

Here’s the news release that Starbucks just released.

SEATTLE (June 4, 2018) – Starbucks Corporation (NASDAQ: SBUX) today announced that Howard Schultz is stepping down as executive chairman and member of the Board of Directors and will be honored with the title of chairman emeritus effective June 26, 2018.

During his four decades as ceo and chairman, Schultz grew Starbucks from 11 stores to more than 28,000 stores in 77 countries, while demonstrating that a business can simultaneously deliver best-in-class financial performance and share success with its people and the communities it serves.

Under Schultz’s leadership, Starbucks has delivered a 21,000% gain in the value of its stock price since its initial public offering in 1992. The company’s growth was fueled by his decisions to provide uncommon benefits for those who work for Starbucks, including comprehensive healthcare, stock ownership and free college tuition, even for those working part-time.

“I set out to build a company that my father, a blue-collar worker and World War II veteran, never had a chance to work for,” Schultz wrote in a letter addressed today to past and present Starbucks partners. “Together we’ve done that, and so much more, by balancing profitability and social conscience, compassion and rigor, and love and responsibility.”

Schultz’s journey began in 1981, when he walked into the first Starbucks store, located in Seattle’s iconic Pike Place Market. The following year, he moved with his wife, Sheri, from New York to assume the role of director of operations and marketing. Schultz’s passion for the highest quality coffee heightened on a business trip to Italy, where he was captivated by the sense of community, romance and theater found in Italian coffee bars. In the years following his return to Seattle, Schultz purchased Starbucks with the support of local investors and dedicated his career to bringing his vision of a modern coffee house to life in America and around the world.

Schultz elevated the concept of Starbucks as the third place between home and work: a comfortable, welcoming environment that provides uplifting experiences, community and human connection.

Among his many accolades, Schultz has been named as one of The World’s Most Influential People by Time magazine as well as Business Person of the Year by Fortune.  Most recently, Schultz has received the Robert F. Kennedy Ripple of Hope Award and has been presented with the Atlantic Council’s Distinguished Business Leadership award and the NAACP LDF (Legal Defense and Education Fund) National Equal Justice award.

This year, Starbucks was named the fifth most admired company in the world by Fortune, marking the 16th year in a row that the company has appeared on the global list. Starbucks was also named one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies by the Ethisphere Institute for the 12th consecutive year and was ranked as one of 2018’s Most Innovative Companies by Fast Company, most notably for its social-impact work.

On April 3, 2017, Schultz transitioned from ceo to executive chairman, shifting his full-time focus to the company’s social impact initiatives as well as innovation and global development of the company’s premium Reserve brand, including Starbucks Reserve Roasteries, Reserve stores and the Company’s partnership with renowned artisanal Italian bakery, Princi. Following his transition off the Starbucks board at the end of June, Schultz will oversee the opening of the Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Milan on Sept. 6 – marking the company’s long-awaited entry into Italy – and the New York Roastery in late October.

Starbucks also announced today that its Board of Directors has appointed Myron E. “Mike” Ullman as its new chair of the Board and Mellody Hobson as vice chair of the Board effective upon Schultz’s retirement. Starbucks world-class, values-based board is comprised of accomplished leaders representing diversity and excellence in global technology, retail, consumer experience and other relevant skill sets.

“There are no words to fully express our gratitude to Howard for the extraordinary company he has built,” said ceo and member of the Board of Directors Kevin Johnson. “He’s helped Starbucks earn the respect of millions around the world by always being true to a higher calling, and always being bold in creating a better future. He’s taught all of us that it’s possible to be a very different kind of public company. That must, and will, continue on my watch.”

In Schultz’s letter to partners, he thanked them for their collective efforts to build a different kind of company. “Because of your creativity, your hard work, and the love that you have poured into the company, Starbucks today is widely embraced and respected. As I prepare to step away, I’d like to humbly remind you not to lose sight of what matters most: your fellow partners and our customers.”

He also expressed deep confidence in the team that will continue to lead the company. “Kevin Johnson is a true servant leader, and he will lead Starbucks as this great company enters its next journey. It’s our duty as leaders to constantly reimagine Starbucks. I am honored to call Kevin my friend and partner. And Starbucks is fortunate to have him. This leadership team is extraordinarily capable. They, too, believe that Starbucks has a responsibility to use our scale for good.”

Schultz is looking forward to spending more time with his family this summer. He is also writing a book about Starbucks social impact work and the efforts to redefine the role and responsibility of a public company in an ever-changing society.

To the more than 330,000 partners who wear the green apron today, and the millions before them, Schultz will forever represent Starbucks mission to inspire and nurture the human spirit one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time.

Frank says “To give the games a faster pace and high impact we have rallied together the city’s top DJ’s to play during the games.” Ballard also added that “There will be some special guests attending some of the games and we are excited that they are coming out to support us”.

CHEF DARNELL FERGUSON TAKING ON THE FOOD CHALLENGE ONE CITY AT A TIME

Darnell Superchef Ferguson(Louisville, KY) Darnell “Superchef” Ferguson learned that hunger doesn’t take a day off.  He had the opportunity to talk to the team of “Blessings in a Backpack” and they shared with him the staggering number of elementary children that need assistance when it comes to food, particularly on weekends within Jefferson County.

They serve 4,700 children at 43 schools in the Louisville Metro Area.  That’s impressive but that’s only 7% of the 64,000 who qualify.

Superchef is ready to take on the challenge and he will be calling on the community to help.  It takes approximately $100 to feed one child during a 38-week school year which does not include the summer break.

Darnell says “Can you imagine sitting at home on the weekend and not having enough food and you are counting down the time until you can get breakfast on Monday morning?  It’s hard and sad to imagine.  I know we as a community can make a difference in the lives of these children and I’m willing to lead the way.  We are not going to have a start date because these children needed food yesterday.”

To setup an interview with Darnell “Super Chef” Ferguson or if you would like to know how you can help with his challenge to help us feed one school at time, please contact us at please contact VIPP Communications at 502-295-0435 or by email at info@vippcommunications.com.

The VIPP Report: A team of leaders is expected to announce their involvement in bringing a NBA franchise to Louisville

0554542001415884100_filepicker

Special from Sherlene Shanklin, WHAS11 Television, ABC Affiliate

With the looming question that many in Kentucky want to know can the state support a National Basketball Association, (NBA) team?  The reason why I’m expanding the discussion from Louisville to the whole Commonwealth is because the players, (people involved) will have connections to both the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky. I’ve figured out several names of the people involved but It can change and/or be updated by the time the public is made aware of their venture.

Remember, I said that there will be an announcement this week.  We only have a couple of days left in the week so I anticipate something in the next day if not today.  At the time of the announcement we will have the name(s) of the people involved which will create a collaborative team of influential people playing all the positions needed to be a real competitor in the game of having a professional team in Louisville.

Like in the Field of Dreams, we built the KFC Yum! Center so will they come or do they need another arena to make it happen?  We are getting closer to that announcement where the talk will turn into negotiations.  They still have a long way to go but this is now going to be moving forward instead of backwards.

To learn more about Louisville working to get a NBA team read my story below.

The VIPP Report: Mystery author Sue Grafton dies after a two year battle with cancer

Web_Slider_SueGraftonHometownHero

Special Report by Sherlene Shanklin, The411 on WHAS11 TV, ABC Affiliate, Louisville

(Louisville, KY)  The author known for her masterful books of mystery starting each with a letter of the alphabet has died.  Sue Grafton died on Thursday after a two year battle with cancer.  WHAS11 spoke to the author in August in Hopkinsville at the solar eclipse.

Grafton’s Hometown Hero Banner was dedicated in 2016.  The 27′ x 40′ banner is facing the east wall of the Springhill Suites/Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott at 132 E. Jefferson Street.

The Louisville native went to Atherton High School and later went on to graduate from the University of Louisville.

Grafton’s novels have been published in twenty-eight countries and in twenty-six languages.

The author’s family just posted a statement on her public figure page on social media.  Here’s their statement:

“Hello Dear Readers. This is Sue’s daughter, Jamie. I am sorry to tell you all that Sue passed away last night after a two year battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family, including her devoted and adoring husband Steve. Although we knew this was coming, it was unexpected and fast. She had been fine up until just a few days ago, and then things moved quickly. Sue always said that she would continue writing as long as she had the juice. Many of you also know that she was adamant that her books would never be turned into movies or TV shows, and in that same vein, she would never allow a ghost writer to write in her name. Because of all of those things, and out of the deep abiding love and respect for our dear sweet Sue, as far as we in the family are concerned, the alphabet now ends at Y.”

So, now we know that there will be no “Z” in Grafton’s series.  It will end with “Y”.

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer just posted this statement on his social media page:

The world has lost a great talent and prolific author in Sue Grafton — and in Louisville we have lost a citizen, friend, neighbor, a master gardener and hometown hero. Her legacy will live on through her words, which will entertain and thrill readers for generations to come.”

Sue Grafton was 77 years old.  Stay with Sherlene Shanklin and WHAS11 Television in Louisville for the latest information.

The VIPP Report: Former UofL and Current Los Angeles Rams Star Jamon Brown Gives Back for the Holidays

502stepup

(Louisville, KY) NFL star Jamon Brown and his foundation (J. Brown Foundation) are teaming up with WHAS11 TV and the Homeless Coalition For The “#502StepUp” for the Holidays Fundraiser.

The goal of the telethon is to raise funds during the Holiday Season while bringing awareness to Youth and Young Adult Homelessness. It’s a trying time, especially during the winter months, for those that do not have a permanent place to call home.

The J. Brown Foundation is asking the City of Louisville to “Step Up” and be a part of the solution, and assist those who just need a little help during the holidays.  Currently, there is a spike in youth and young adult homelessness between the ages of 16-24 in Louisville, and Jamon is rolling up his sleeves to help shed light on this issue.

In Jefferson County alone, there’s over 800 new cases per year of youth that are considered homeless for various reasons. The statistics are staggering and agencies like the Homeless Coalition are overwhelmed with requests this time of year.

“The J. Brown Foundation is committed to assisting our community partners by investing time, energy and resources, while using our platform to bring awareness to issues such as Youth and Young Adult Homelessness. Even the smallest donations go a long way, and we need the city’s support to raise funds during the Holidays to propel the Homeless Coalition to their goal of eliminating Youth Homelessness by 2020,” says Jamon Brown.

On Wednesday, November 15th we are asking you to open your heart and donate during our telethon on WHAS11TV from 4 pm to 6:30 pm.

Even a small donation will go a long way.  Plus, you will never know who will be on the other line taking your pledge.

It’s the “502StepUp for the Holidays”.  Please call in from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm on Wednesday, November 15th to donate by calling 502-571-2345 or 1-866-885-1848.

The VIPP Report: Birdgang Brand Apparel announces former Cardinal and LA Ram Jamon Brown to their Louisville Legends Series

IMG_3491[32458]

(Louisville, KY) The University of Louisville Football Team started their season with a win against former UofL star Jeff Brohm’s scrappy Purdue Boilermaker team. Consequently, we are now just days away from the kick off of the National Football League (NFL) season as well!  This time of year, and the excitement behind both football seasons, make it the perfect time for Louisville-based Birdgang Brand Clothing, to add to its “Louisville Legends” Series. This specific line of clothing, which Birdgang introduced with Super Bowl 39 MVP Deion Branch as its initial athlete, was created out of respect and love for former UofL greats, their contribution to the University, as well as for the fans of these particular past players. Added to this very prestigious list, is Louisville’s “Home Grown” Jamon Brown!

Jamon starred at Louisville’s Fern Creek High School, The University of Louisville, and is now the starting right guard for the Los Angeles Rams, clearing the way on the line of scrimmage for 2015 NFL Rookie of the Year Todd Gurley. “SACRIFICE” is the exclusive design that Jamon and Birdgang Brand brainstormed about, the one word that embodies the life and career of an offensive lineman! Or? Maybe it embodies the life of an at home mom, or an awesome front line employee that gets little recognition? Or? Maybe it embodies the life of our military men and women, that give their lives freely on a daily basis! Or? Maybe our first responders to situations like Hurricane Harvey-the men and women that run into disastrous situations, while others look or run away. Or? Maybe it’s our at-risk youth, of which Jamon is very active through his JBrown Foundation, and teaching them that SACRIFICE breeds success. Whichever it is, this design fits the mold of anyone that has given their time and energy, seeking very little in return.

“The sacrifice shirt really speaks for itself,” says Jamon. “Being an offensive lineman, you’re constantly making sacrifices! You are consistently the least recognized but are a part of the bigger goal, and take on some of the biggest responsibilities, in the process of building success. This design takes you into the perspective of an offensive lineman, and others making sacrifices! For me, it’s just the selfless attitude that I have, and I think many lineman like myself have as well. So, the words and phrases of this shirt, puts you in the shoes of an individual that puts the TEAM, before themselves. The ultimate Sacrifice!”

The exclusive “Sacrifice” Design will go on sale this Friday for a limited time only and is in high demand, as a portion of the proceeds will benefit The JBrown Foundation. The Foundation has a focus on our “At Risk” Youth in Louisville and abroad, and helping them to realize their fullest potential, with an end-goal of influencing them, and others to be givers. The link below is equipped with the pricing details of the shirt. There’s also a direct path (toward the middle of the page once the link is opened), to the JBrown Foundation for those that want to donate directly, and stay abreast with the happenings of the Foundation.  If you would like to purchase the “Sacrifice” design we’ve provided the following link: https://birdgangpledge.ignitecx.com/sacrifice.

The VIPP Report: Entrepreneur & Television personality adds author to his title with the release of his new book

DarnellSuperChef

“KNOWING IS HALF THE FIGHT…COOKING IS THE OTHER.”

(Louisville, KY) Have you even seen the Louisville entrepreneur and owner of one of the most notable restaurants in Louisville do anything on a small scale?  Your answer is likely “no” because he does everything in a big way or should we say “supersized”?  Darnell “Super Chef” Ferguson releases his new book entitled “Knowing is half the fight…Cooking is the other”.  It’s the brainchild of Super Chef when he was in culinary school.  Fast-forward several years later with a successful business and frequent appearances on several national cooking shows this was the perfect time to finish the project.

Ferguson says “When you read my book, it will give you healthy cooking tips, smart serving sizes to assist with portion control and mental food tips.  When customers come into my restaurant they always stop me and ask general questions about food, preparation and dieting so I put many of the answers in the book.  Knowing is half the fight. I hope when you read it that you will have several “I didn’t know that moments.”

You can pick up an autographed copy of the book at Super Chefs located at 1702 Bardstown Road.  You can also purchase your books online at http://eatsuperchefs.com/ and/or www.iamsuperchef.com.

The VIPP Report: Meet Steve Mudd Jr. GM at Montgomery Chevrolet

2974aa0ab2894b41a1704e9b5cfa117fTHE GENERAL MANAGER FOR ONE OF THE TOP AUTOMOTIVE DEALERS IN KENTUCKY FINDS A WAY TO HIRE EMPLOYEES NEEDING A SECOND CHANCE BY TURNING OBSTACLES INTO OPPORTUNITIES

(Louisville, KY) With less than two years in his new position, Steve Mudd Jr., and his team at Montgomery Chevrolet have doubled sales over their projection. They actually grew 65% in year over year sales.

The first 40 Under 40 award recipient is only one of four African American General Managers in the state of Kentucky was passed the GM torch in July 2015 and has been excelling since that day.  As he climbed the leadership ladder, he continued to develop his support team.  Even with his busy schedule, Steve takes the time to teach his sales team the auto business.  By making them knowledgeable on the sales floor, it gives customers confidence in the sales team and their purchase.

Steve likes to stay above the curve by finding innovative sales tactics by using mediums like social media platforms.  He says “To be a leader, you need to find an employee’s strength and build from it.  Just like an athlete on a team. Each person has a particular position they play. They become a leader in the position but fellow teammates are there to assist to make sure the ball stays in play. That’s why I chose the Disney Approach developed by Walt Disney”.

When the perspective customer pulls into the lot, they are greeted. Instead of them looking for help, Steve’s team is there walking them through the process.

Mudd goes on to say “Customer service is vital because we want you to become a repeat customer.  How you feel when you drive your new car off the lot, is the same feeling you get when it’s time to start thinking about additional purchases.  They should be saying to themselves that they would return because their last experience was a good one.”

The VIPP Report: SuperChefs’ owner Darnell Ferguson turns a hardship into a blessing

supercheflogoEVEN THROUGH THEIR OBSTACLES AND MINOR SETBACKS SUPERCHEFS REOPENS THEIR DOORS AND THE FIRST THING ON THEIR AGENDA IS TO GIVE BACK TO AREA YOUTH

(Louisville, KY) The vision remains the same even through trials and tribulations.  Superchefs one year ago this week watched the building go up in flames only for the owner Darnell Ferguson and his team to regroup and move to a new location on Bardstown Road.  On the eve of their celebration to commemorate their success the restaurant receives another setback.  This time, the water pipe burst causing the restaurant to flood but like they say in entertainment “The show must go on”.  After closing temporarily to get things cleaned up, Superchefs reopens on Wednesday.

Darnell Ferguson says “This minor setback is only setting me up for something even bigger.  If I can’t handle the little obstacles like a busted pipe at one location, I may be blocking a blessing of multiple restaurants in several cities across the U.S. This is only a test to test my patience and my team and I are up for the challenge.”

Ferguson also started a new STOP THE VIOLENCE initiative.  He wanted to take his talents in the kitchen to be a blessing to youth in the area.  So, once a month, Ferguson and his Superchefs team will choose a day where a non-profit organization will receive proceeds from their restaurant sales.

Ferguson says “I would like to start with the organization AMPED.  The West Louisville based organization and its leadership work hard to keep youth off the streets and to expose them to the world of music from writing, performing and producing.  I support their efforts and want to see them succeed.”

The STOP THE VIOLENCE fundraiser will be held on Tuesday, Janauary 17, 2017.

Dave Christopher Sr with AMPED says “”We are so grateful to Darnell for helping AMPED to help the youth in our community. Super Chef Darnell is such an inspiration. He has been through so much and yet he continues to push forward with his dream and mission to inspire others to achieve greatness. A fire and then a flood and yet he keeps on smiling and thinking of others, wow!”

The VIPP Report: Kentucky based DB Bourbon Candy gets “Presidential” status as they head to Washington to serve V.I.P. guests at the Congressional Black Caucus

DBBourbonCandy

(Louisville, KY) It’s the moment when you realize that the highest government official in the United States of America will be attending the V.I.P. reception you are sponsoring and your product and state pride begins to kick in.  DB Bourbon Candy, LLC headquartered in Frankfort, Kentucky along with Four Roses Bourbon will travel to the District of Columbia to be sponsors of the V.I.P. Reception at the 45th Annual Legislative Conference Phoenix Awards Dinner where President Barack Obama will serve as the keynote speaker.

The dinner will be held on Saturday, September 19th at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. at 6:00 p.m.

DB Bourbon Candy was asked to provide 600 boxes of their delicious Four Roses Bourbon filled candy for guests to enjoy.  Dignitaries from Congress, the Senate and the President and First Lady Michelle Obama will all be in attendance.

Robyn Stuart, DB Bourbon Candy CEO says “To be in a room full of history makers proud of their accomplishments only gives me a sense of pride that I made my dream into reality. From a family tradition created to celebrate a holiday to introducing people all over the world to a Kentucky favorite.  This is the ultimate invite to be asked to be a part of such a prestigious event where our country’s head of state will be in attendance.  This is a true example that I can achieve anything”.

Prior to Saturday’s event on Wednesday, September 14th, DB Bourbon Candy will provide 200 boxes for the 20th Annual Celebration of Leadership in Fine Arts honoring entertainment icons Cicely Tyson, Richard Roundtree and Dionne Warwick.  It takes place at Sidney Harman Hall, 610 F. In 2002, Stuart started her business after the passing of her mother.   During the holidays, her mother would create the delicious treat as a family tradition. Robyn wanted to honor her mother in some way so she decided to start the business and make the original candy recipe apart of her business. With the support of Four Roses and Bourbon Country as well as the many events and activities she participates in everyone loves to see the wonderful creation that she produces.  From initially starting with candy the business has grown into developing other products such as chocolate covered fruit, cheesecakes to chocolate covered popcorn.
