The VIPP Report: Music legend Natalie Cole dies at the age of 65

Natalie Cole GettyWith just hours into the new year, I receive sad news. The woman that had the “Unforgettable” voice and beautiful duet that set the technology bar high for other artists trying to do the same thing has died.  Natalie Cole died on New Year’s Eve at the age of 65.  She just cancelled her concert in Louisville, Kentucky for Saturday, February 13th at the Kentucky Center due to illness.

Here’s my story that I posted on WHAS11.com.  http://www.whas11.com/story/homepage/2016/01/01/the411-with-sherlene-shanklin-natalie-cole-dies-at-the-age-of-65/78177338/

Natalie Cole, the Grammy-winning daughter of Nat “King” Cole” who carried on her late father’s musical legacy and, through technology, shared a duet with him on “Unforgettable,” has died. She was 65.

According to ABC News, Natalie died Thursday evening at Cedar Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles due to compilations from ongoing health issues, her family said in a statement.

“Natalie fought a fierce, courageous battle, dying how she lived … with dignity, strength and honor. Our beloved Mother and sister will be greatly missed and remain UNFORGETTABLE in our hearts forever,” read the statement from her son Robert Yancy and sisters Timolin and Casey Cole.

Cole’s greatest success came with her 1991 album, “Unforgettable … With Love,” which paid tribute to her father with reworked versions of some of his best-known songs, including “That Sunday That Summer,” ”Too Young” and “Mona Lisa.”

Her voice was spliced with her dad’s in the title cut, offering a delicate duet a quarter-century after his death.

The album sold some 14 million copies and won six Grammys, including album of the year as well record and song of the year for the title track duet.

Cole was scheduled to be in Louisvile on Saturday, February 13th but just a couple of weeks ago the Louisville Orchestra had to adjust their lineup by including Kristin Chenoweth in place of Cole due to illness.

NOW YOU CAN HEAR FROM THE WOMAN WHO INVESTED IN HERSELF TO LOSS

200 POUNDS ON HER WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY

It was a beautiful Saturday morning in Louisville, Kentucky when Asia Renee Ford gained national attention because she was trying to teach her children that whatever you may be going through in life, “Don’t Give Up”.  The 35 year old mother of three started her lifestyle change journey two years ago weighing 474.  Fast forward, two years later and 200 pounds lighter Asia decides to participate in the Rodes City Run, 10K race held in Louisville.  This is not her first race, she did it in 2014 and all she wanted to do was beat her time.  Recovering her pneumonia and taking antibiotics, Asia could of have easily made an excuse not participate.

Asia set out on Saturday, March 21st to finish that race and that’s exactly what she did.  During mile four with two miles to go, she felt her body shutting down on her but she was determined.  A Louisville Metro Police officer saw Asia and her son and went to her aid not knowing that she was saying a prayer for strength and the will to keep going when the officer appeared and tried to assist her.  Officer Gregory initially thought Asia would stop but within seconds, then he realized that she would not quit. He helped her at mile five when she slowed down again. So, he assisted her to get to the finish line with emergency personnel following close behind.  The EMT, and a photographer snapped a couple of photos and the photos went viral.  Media outlets from all over the world have contacted Asia from ABC News, People, Time, CBS to the Washington Post.

You know the story of Asia Ford’s race on that day, but now you can hear from her on how she got to that day.  From her weight loss journey, her strong support system, her faith in herself and God.  She’ll be the first to tell you that every day is a journey but with lifestyle changes you can see results.  You can see her updates on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. You can follow her journey, tips, and advice she will give to help you start the journey.  There’s also a Go Fund Me Page for you to review http://www.gofundme.com/pxa4cw.  Please consider supporting.

Asia says “I started my lifestyle change 2 years ago after my husband at the time lost his hand in an amputation due to diabetes. My kids were old enough to understand everything the doctor said and I knew right then and there, we were letting our kids down. It was time to change! I joined a boot camp called Aspirations with the help of a friend and changed the way I ate. At 474 lbs. it was a struggle but now 217 lbs. down I know I’ll be around for my kids and see them graduate, go to college, get married. I’m grateful to God that I woke up and took my life back”

The VIPP Report: Two-time Super Bowl Champ Deion Branch proves that giving back is never out of season

IMG_135586938332702

The VIPP Report:  Deion and Shola Branch along with their children and team members of the Deion Branch Foundation helped spread some holiday cheer for a Louisville family in need of a little assistance.  The Branch family took the mother of four on a shopping spree.  Things have been challenging for the mother since she’s been spending most of her time and money on her children. One child was diagnosed with ADHD and another is autistic. Between the family’s medical bills and day to day needs the hardship was real for the family.

The Branch family knew the family was very close when the children waited for their mother to walk away and they approached Mrs. Branch to see if they could get her a gift. They wanted to make sure she was also going to have something under the tree on Christmas as well.

The foundation wanted to thank the Louisville Metro Police Department.  They made sure the family was able to get to Target in New Albany, Indiana to meet the Branch family.

Before leaving the store Team Branch still needed to make sure several dozen children currently in the Salvation of Army’s Emergency Shelter all had something for Christmas.  They filled more than 50 bags with pajamas, underclothes, socks and diapers just to name a few of the items in their bags.  Each child received a gift bag personally addressed to them.

After the shopping spree, the Branch family met the staff from the Salvation of Army and dropped off the gifts just in time for the holidays.

Two-time Super Bowl Champion Deion Branch says “I was always brought up as a child that when you are blessed with a special gift in your life, turn around and be a blessing to others.  When the family walked into the store and we explained to the mother why she was there, the look on her face was simply priceless.  I turned to my wife Shola and we knew that we were definitely doing the right thing by helping this great family.  I’m also trying to instill in my children that it’s important to give back to the community.  The whole day was truly a blessing and I’m so happy that my foundation was a part of it.”

The VIPP Report: Birdgang Brand Steps Up Their Game With A New Line Of Merchandise

IMG_0818

TO KEEP UP WITH HIGH DEMAND CARDINAL FANS LOOKING FOR MORE OPTIONS IN APPAREL

Immediate Release

October 29, 2014

2013, “The Year of the Cardinal” took the University of Louisville athletics to new heights. Fans witnessed a football team go 2-0 in bowl victories, a baseball team that advanced to the college World Series, a women’s basketball team reach the NCAA championship game, a men’s basketball team that won a NCAA Championship (2012-2013 season) and the emergence of a new clothing line that captured the swagger of a proud and enthusiastic fan base fittingly called “BIRDGANG”.

Birdgang Brand Clothing is headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky and is a high fashion sports apparel company centered around the University of Louisville Athletics. Birdgang Brand Clothing is supported and approved by the University of Louisville, and is officially licensed by the Collegiate Licensing Company, (CLC).

The clothing line is founded by two members of the group Nappy Roots, Brian “Buffalo Stille” Scott and Ronald “Ron Clutch” Wilson. Stille is the founder and Wilson serves as the co-founder of the brand.

Consumers raved over the style and comfort of the university approved brand. Merchandise was flying off the shelves at retail outlets such as Hall of Fame Café, JD Becker, and Cardboard Heroes in Oxmoor and St. Matthews Malls respectively. From alumni to former players and students, to new found fans across the U.S. the demand for the Birdgang Brand Clothing was such that it caused the company to go back into production and design new merchandise for customers that have purchased every design available to them.

Fast forward one year later as BIRDGANG BRAND now announces the launch of its new website http://www.WeAreBirdgang.com and the addition of their “fly custom fitted caps and SnapBacks” as well as an all new “lady birds” category for the ladies. “We wanted to extend more options to our female Cards fans than just men’s/unisex tees,” says Stille. “In addition, we just got tired of seeing these cheap knockoffs of our trademark, a statewide and federal registered trademark.”

“Our new Fall/Winter line is a fresh new look, which is sleek and stylish plus versatile for U of L fans to show their school spirit even in their workplace.”

With these guys it’s all about the fans. “We do it for the people!” adds Wilson. Being avid U of L fans themselves and even one partner, Danny ‘Moe Money’ Mosby having started on the ’96 Cardinal football squad, the BIRDGANG BRAND team is focused on bringing urban fashion to the sports apparel arena. Stille adds, “We just wanna rep our team and stay fly in the process!”

Former Greater Louisville Inc., (GLI) Executive Director Tendai Charisika says “Birdgang Clothing is on the brink of something special”. Tendai has been instrumental in connecting Birdgang with Louisville’s most sought after venture capitalists. “Birdgang has been able to establish valuable licensing agreements and strategic partnerships with the University of Louisville that has positioned them for incredible future success. The market for urban apparel is growing and Birdgang is capturing this market with the highest quality material, which is what their brand stands for.”

If you would like to be a part of the Birdgang Brand Team go to http://www.WeAreBirdGang.com for investors, distributors and/or vendor information. To setup an interview and to see the new line of merchandise with the Birdgang Brand Clothing team, please call 502-582-7716 or by email at info@vippcommunications.com.

Mosby says, “the Birdgang Brand Team would like to thank Cards fans for supporting out 100/24 Campaign.   We successfully sold 100 t-shirts in 24 hours on the same day the bowl eligible Cardinals received a top #25 ranking.  The gray old English L’s, are in just in time for the unveiling of the gray uniforms.  Follow us on social media to receive updates on how you can win some merchandise. We will do giveaways each week. Follow us on Facebook group @502Birdgang, Twitter and Instagram @wearebirdgang.”

Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater announces that he will forgo his senior year and enter the NFL draft

Image

University of Louisville releases a statement in regards to QB Teddy Bridgewater entering the 2014 NFL Draft.

University of Louisville junior quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has decided to forgo his final year of collegiate eligibility, and make himself available for the 2014 NFL Draft. “After discussing all the options with my family and the coaching staff, I have decided to forgo my senior season and declare for the NFL Draft,” Bridgewater said. “This was an extremely difficult decision for me. I can’t express how much my time at Louisville has meant to me. These past three years have allowed me to mature as a person and leave the university as better person and with my degree in hand, which was one of my goals. I will cherish every moment on the field and off the field, and every bond that I built. I will forever represent the university with the utmost pride and respect. I want to extend a special thank you to my teammates, Tom Jurich, all the academic staff and professors, the coaching staff, support staff, students and the Cardinals’ fan base.

“I didn’t know much about Louisville when I made the decision to attend, but in the end, it was one of the best decisions I could have ever made.”

Bridgewater made the decision following an outstanding 2013 season, which was capped by a standout performance in the 2013 Russell Athletic Bowl, where he completed 35-of-45 passes for a career-high 447 yards and three touchdowns.

Bridgewater won 27 games in his three years as the starting quarterback for Louisville, including 12 wins in 2013, which tied a school record. Bridgewater threw for 3,970 yards and 31 touchdowns in 2013, while completing 71 percent of his passes.

In leading the Cardinals to a 12-1 record, Bridgewater developed into one of the best quarterbacks in the nation. He opened the season by tying his career high with five touchdown passes in a 49-7 win over Ohio and four more in wins over Eastern Kentucky and FIU. He recorded seven 300-yard passing games and was a second team All-American Athletic Conference selection this season.

In 39 career games at Louisville, Bridgewater threw for 9,817 yards, which is third most in the UofL annals, while his 72 career touchdown passes also ranks as third best in school history. He completed a school-record 68.3 percent of his passes and had just 24 interceptions in 1,142 career pass attempts.

The Miami, Fla., native was the 2012 BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year and a first team all-league selection after throwing for 3,719 yards and 27 touchdowns in guiding the Cardinals to an 11-2 record and a win over fourth-ranked Florida in the Sugar Bowl. In earning Most Valuable Player accolades in the win over the Gators, Bridgewater went 20-of-32 for 266 yards and two scores in a win over Florida.

The Cardinals have three returning quarterbacks on the roster in redshirt freshman Will Gardner, freshman Kyle Bolin, and junior Brett Nelson.

The VIPP Report: Giving back to the Kentucky community during the holidays

SecretSanta

As the holiday season comes to a close, there were “Secret Santas” all over Kentucky and Indiana. I received messages about several people we went out of their way to make sure they assisted their community. Some grew up here while others attended college in the area. The one that received alot attention was the $13,000 gift from a local celebrity that helped pay for layaways at a Walmart. They did not want their name released. Several people come to mind but I will not speculate. I called someone and they told me “Sherlene remember angels fly low”. I didn’t push them after they made that statement.

Former U of L and NFL star Deion Branch made sure people who stayed at the Center for Women and Families had Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. He also donated money to help kickoff their gift card campaign. Branch and his family also travelled to Elizabethtown, KY to assist two families who lost everything in a house fire just before Christmas.

Louisville native C.J. Spillman with the San Francisco 49ers donated holiday baskets to people who needed a little assistance during the holidays. This is not the first time Spillman has helped families during the holidays. One year, his mother and sister attended a giveaway on his behalf because he was preparing for a game.

I’m sure there’s a lot of acts of kindness not announced but each and everything done was appreciated. I know these men just hope you “Pay It Forward”.

Two-time NFL champion Deion Branch helps two families in Kentucky after a major fire

DSCN0344Super Bowl 39 MVP & former University of Louisville wide receiver Deion Branch heard about two families in Elizabethtown, Kentucky losing everything in a house fire.  After seeing the media reports, Branch and his family went to Elizabethtown on Saturday, December 14th to meet the two families. He wanted to help them get some necessities to get them through the holidays.

With the assistance of the Elizabethtown Red Cross, Branch met the families consisting of eleven (11) members and took them on a shopping spree at the area Target Store.  The families got an opportunity to pick up clothing, home essentials and toys for the children.

Branch says “To see their faces when we told them to get what they needed were priceless.  To have my wife and children with me was a special moment.  We try to instill in our children to give back.  I was so proud to see my son and daughters helping the children pick out their gifts.  We’re happy that we can be a blessing to them but they were also a blessing to us.  They made us realize as long as we have each other that’s all that really matters.  Material things can be replaced.”

The Deion Branch Charitable Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is to offer support to children’s mental, physical, emotional well-being and for those inflected with meningitis.  The DBCF’s mission is to help with research and to find a cure to ease the struggles for children like Deiondre, Deion’s son. The foundation goal is to assist by providing programs and initiatives aimed at improving their quality of life. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Thicker Than Water Reality Star Jewel Tankard Comes To Louisville

Image

The VIPP Report: Bravo reality show star Jewel Tankard will be in Louisville later today for a holiday mixer.  The free event will be held at the Holiday Inn East on Hurstbourne Pkwy.  The mixer begins at 6:30 p.m.

I had the opportunity to ask Tankard a few questions prior to her Louisville visit.  The question a lot of people wanted to know is why did she decide to do a reality show?  Jewel says “We wanted to show people that they can fight for their family again, have a successful blended family and that there is no perfect family, so you just need to love your family right where they are.”

Now since the show has aired several times, I asked Jewel did she regret doing the show and having her life an open book.  “Because I got so comfortable with being vulnerable and authentic, it was more so a mindset of that, it is what it is and I am okay with that. This entire experience brought us closer as a family and I wouldn’t change anything about that because family is very important to me.”

I always wanted to know if the Bravo stars get an opportunity to see the show prior to their scheduled time and Jewel says yes they do.

The organizers for tonight’s event had to move rooms because the demand has been overwhelming.  They anticipate a great crowd and Jewel says  she’s thrilled to be here. “Extremely excited! I love people and I look forward to sharing with them and loving on them. I am very grateful for everyone’s support and I look forward to hearing from each of them.”

Jewel Tankard is a dynamic speaker and fans will hear her tonight and then at the conclusion of the event there will be a meet and greet.

This Christmas networking event will feature local singers performing, trip giveaways, nutritional samplings, a mini fashion show by Eboni Stephens Model & Video Agency (ESMV).  The entertainment for the evening will be provided by DJ Bruce Wayne, and the soulful sounds of Sheryl Rouse.

This Holiday Mixer is free to the community, with donations welcome at the door on Tuesday, December 10, 2013, at 6:30 pm.   Bring your business card and enjoy the start of this holiday season!

U.S. President Barack Obama holds a press conference to talk about the passing of former S. Africa President Nelson Mandela

Image

STATEMENT BY THE PRESIDENT

ON THE DEATH OF NELSON MANDELA

James S. Brady Press Briefing Room

5:25 P.M. EST

THE PRESIDENT:  At his trial in 1964, Nelson Mandela closed his statement from the dock saying, “I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination.  I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities.  It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve.  But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”

And Nelson Mandela lived for that ideal, and he made it real.  He achieved more than could be expected of any man.  Today, he has gone home.  And we have lost one of the most influential, courageous, and profoundly good human beings that any of us will share time with on this Earth.  He no longer belongs to us — he belongs to the ages.

Through his fierce dignity and unbending will to sacrifice his own freedom for the freedom of others, Madiba transformed South Africa — and moved all of us.  His journey from a prisoner to a President embodied the promise that human beings — and countries — can change for the better.  His commitment to transfer power and reconcile with those who jailed him set an example that all humanity should aspire to, whether in the lives of nations or our own personal lives.  And the fact that he did it all with grace and good humor, and an ability to acknowledge his own imperfections, only makes the man that much more remarkable.  As he once said, “I am not a saint, unless you think of a saint as a sinner who keeps on trying.”

I am one of the countless millions who drew inspiration from Nelson Mandela’s life.  My very first political action, the first thing I ever did that involved an issue or a policy or politics, was a protest against apartheid.  I studied his words and his writings.  The day that he was released from prison gave me a sense of what human beings can do when they’re guided by their hopes and not by their fears.  And like so many around the globe, I cannot fully imagine my own life without the example that Nelson Mandela set, and so long as I live I will do what I can to learn from him.

To Graça Machel and his family, Michelle and I extend our deepest sympathy and gratitude for sharing this extraordinary man with us.  His life’s work meant long days away from those who loved him the most.  And I only hope that the time spent with him these last few weeks brought peace and comfort to his family.

To the people of South Africa, we draw strength from the example of renewal, and reconciliation, and resilience that you made real.  A free South Africa at peace with itself — that’s an example to the world, and that’s Madiba’s legacy to the nation he loved.

We will not likely see the likes of Nelson Mandela again.  So it falls to us as best we can to forward the example that he set:  to make decisions guided not by hate, but by love; to never discount the difference that one person can make; to strive for a future that is worthy of his sacrifice.

For now, let us pause and give thanks for the fact that Nelson Mandela lived — a man who took history in his hands, and bent the arc of the moral universe toward justice.  May God Bless his memory and keep him in peace.

Muhammad Ali remembers Nelson Mandela

Statement Regarding Mr. Mandela’s Passing

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Mandela. His was a life filled  with purpose and hope; hope for himself, his country and the world. He inspired others to reach for what appeared to be impossible and moved  them to break through the barriers that held them hostage mentally, physically, socially and economically. He made us realize, we are our  brother’s keeper and that our brothers come in all colors. What I will remember most about Mr.Mandela is that he was a man whose  heart, soul and spirit could not be contained or restrained by racial and  economic injustices, metal bars or the burden of hate and revenge. He  taught us forgiveness on a grand scale. His was a spirit born free, destined to soar above the rainbows. Today his spirit is soaring through the heavens.  He is now forever free.

 —Muhammad Ali
