The VIPP Report: The “Showdown” takes place on the basketball court bringing “All Stars” to the hardwood to support area youth and Hurricane Harvey victims

(Louisville, KY) It’s all about the bragging rights in the All-Star Showdown 2017 on Sunday, September 3^rd at Old Male High School Gym, 911 S. Brook Street (corner of Brook and Breckenridge). Tickets are $10 for adults and $3 for youth 12 and under.

At 3:00 p.m. there will be a championship league game. So, the East End Team of Louisville, Lou-Ville Champs will go up against the Buffalo All Star Pro Team from Lexington coached by 1978 NCAA Champion and Kentucky Wildcat James Lee. It’s the battle for bragging rights. During halftime fans, will get to enjoy a dunk contest. You need to be in attendance to see the unbelievable dunks that will be attempted.

You will get your money’s worth with this event. A second game has been added. It’s the All-Star Game featuring former NBA & NCAA champion for the Kentucky Wildcats Derek Anderson, former Louisville Cardinals stars BJ Flynn, Nate Johnson and Alvin Sims will participate in the game. We’ve also confirmed that two Louisville Metro Police Officers Joplin Johnson and Thomas Coleman will play in this game. Louisville native and NBA star D’Angelo Russell graciously sponsored the official All Star Showdown Nike uniforms for the 5pm game.

Two former University of Louisville athletes Tony Williams and Mario Urrutia along with their dynamic teams created this concept to give back to the youth in the community. Williams played 10 years in the European professional basketball league and works tirelessly to assist the youth in the community. After playing for the Cardinals, Urrutia played in the NFL and currently helps other youth seeking the same success by developing them at the Super Student Athletes, LIFE Center. They provide guidance both on and off the football field. Throughout the day, you will see youth be showcased in various ways so they can be exposed to positive figures in the community.

You will also get to see Kentucky State University’s Marching Band. They will travel from Frankfort to be a part of the game. There will be a step show during the HBCU halftime explosion.

This event is for the sharp shooters because there will be a Montgomery Chevrolet 3 Point Contest. Former Harlem Globetrotter, Dirt Bowl legend and Louisville native Gerald Gray will participate in Beat the Pro Challenge.

There will even be a $1,000 Lawyer for the City Half Court Long Shot Challenge sponsored by Attorney Brandon Lawrence.

This family friendly event will not only recognize the youth in the community but due to Hurricane Harvey, organizers felt the need to assist with aid by holding a moment of silence at the start of the game and introducing Derek Anderson’s AOK Foundation for hurricane relief fund and explain how you can help throughout the event. Organizers have family and friends affected and want to let them know they care.

The response has been overwhelming when it comes to giving back. To keep the activities moving Mario Martin of “The Mario Show” will be the emcee for the day.

Members of the Aspire Academy, which features some of the top high school prospects in the country will be in attendance. Hoops for Christ Philip Morrison will do a dribble dance routine with youth on the court. The VIPP Report: 5th Annual African Heritage Festival kicks off in Louisville on August 25th

A Celebration of Unity, Art, Culture, & History Across the African Diaspora

The 5^th Annual African Heritage Festival will be held in various locations around the city of Louisville Friday, August 25^th through Sunday August 27^th. The event celebrates unity, culture, art and history across the African Diaspora.

The festival is hosted by Bridge Kids International, the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage (KCAAH), the Kentucky Old School Sports Association (KOSSA), HoneyTree Publishing, and Moments to Remember.

The African Heritage Festival is organized by a dynamic team representing a variety of countries and backgrounds. The whole city is invited to this unifying event that will be fun, educational, and certainly full of flavor. Last year’s festival drew approximately 2000 participants, and with this year’s new additions, we only anticipate that the celebration will continue to grow.

Opening Ceremony — Friday, August 25th – Kentucky Center for African American Heritage:

Opening Ceremony will kick off the weekend with a reception and program honoring African heritage, culture, history and art.

Festival Day — Saturday, August 26th

The African Heritage Festival will be a joyous event for the whole family with great food, music, dance, sports, theater, fashion, cultural demonstrations, children’s activities, resources for healthy living and so much more. What a great way to honor African, African-American and Caribbean cultures in Louisville and add to the revitalization efforts in the historic Russell neighborhood. All activities are free and open to the public. Some highlights include:

8:00am: Soccer Tournament Begins – Champions Park, 2050 River Road soccer tournament held at Champions Park, organized by KOSSA, featuring 10 teams from at least 5 states with players representing 20 countries of origin
10:00am: Parade Begins – a parade of marching bands, dance teams, bicycle groups, community organizations and more down Muhammad Ali Blvd. starting at 9^th Street and ending at 18^th Street where the festival will take place in front of the KCAAH
10:00am – 12:00pm: the widely beloved Books & Breakfast!
11:00am: Festival activities begin and will feature live entertainment, “Under the Story Tree” storytelling fest, and other children’s activities. Food, merchandise and informational vendors from across the city and the surrounding region will be in attendance.
12:00pm: Basketball tournament begins – a street basketball tournament presented by KOSSA and the organizers of the Dirt Bowl
12:00pm – 5:00pm: A how-to fair with community members teaching useful and fun things
7:00pm: Festival ends

Sunday, August 27th – Invoke… Called by the Ancestors (performance begins 2:30 pm)

This year, we are excited to announce that a third day will be incorporated into the festival! Please come out on Sunday, August 27th for “Invoke … Called by the Ancestors” performed by Sankofa Dance Theater. The Baltimore based dance company presents world-class, authentic African art in the form of dance, music, and folkways for national and international audiences. Sankofa Dance Theater’s work is rooted in healing and bringing intercultural understanding to the global village while staying true to the definition of the word “Sankofa” — which means to learn from the past in an effort to build for the future. The show will begin promptly at 2:30pm and will feature a special appearance by spoken word artists Hannah Drake and Tytianna Wells smith –performing A Mother’s Tears. Tickets for Sunday’s are available on Eventbrite and at Better Days Records West (Lyles Mall). Proceeds will go towards the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage. The African Heritage Festival was founded in 2013 when Bridge Kids International approached KCAAH about hosting the event at the Center as a way to build relationships among and celebrate Louisville’s African Diaspora. In four years, the event has grown from a mostly indoor event to a street festival and has more than doubled in size. Bridge Kids continues to coordinate the overall planning, but the African Heritage Festival has truly become the pride of all of the presenting organizations, planning committee, participants and volunteers.

FOOTBALL SEASON IS JUST A FEW WEEKS AWAY GET YOUR CHILD READY BY PARTICIPATING IN DEION BRANCH’S SKILLS AND DRILLS CAMP

(Louisville, KY) Former University of Louisville and two-time Super Bowl champ and SB XXXIX MVP Deion Branch returns to Louisville to host his 8th Annual Skills & Drills Football Camp. It will be on Saturday, July 8th at Baptist Health Performance, 12101 Sycamore Station Place. Registration begins at 8:00 am and the camp is from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.

The camp is for youth ages 7 to 18. The registration fee is only $50, which includes: lunch, goodie bag, t-shirt and personal instruction from Branch and some of his U of L teammates and friends.

Branch says “The DB Foundation really enjoys this camp. We get to watch young athletes develop their skills. We’ve watched several players throughout their football season and they’ve excelled and we are excited to see them return to work on another part of their game. If you’ve never brought your child to the camp, I encourage them to come. Former U of L players will take them through various drills. This camp gives them a chance to learn proper technique, health and wellness plus sportsmanship.”

The proceeds raised during the camp will benefit the Deion Branch Foundation. The Deion Branch Charitable Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is to offer support to children’s mental, physical, emotional well-being and for those who have been infected with meningitis. The DBCF’s mission is to help with research and to find a cure to ease the struggle for children like Deion’s son. (Louisville, KY) It’s the return of the Super Hoop High School All-Star Seniors Classic. In the state where players have the reputation of competitive high flying and raining three-pointers from all over the court. The region’s top players will match up and to measure their skill set before heading to the respective collegiate teams.

On Saturday, May 27th, old school meets new school at Old Male High School located at 911 S. Brook Street. Starting at 1:00 p.m. various championship veteran players will coach the future all-stars.

There will be a Doctors of Dunk Contest judged by of course some of the legendary sky walkers in this area. It’s only right for them to judge the next group of stars entering their tight brotherhood of basketball dominance. If that’s not enough entertainment. Back by popular demand is the Celebrity All-Star Peace game. Area celebrities, current and former professionals will lace them up “4 Peace”.

This is a family friendly event, so we did not forget about our young sports fans. There will be a peewee contest. All peewee participants will receive two Louisville Bats 2017 season tickets.

With the recent acts of violence in the community and today being the last day of school for Jefferson County Public School students, parents and guardians are scrambling to find events and activities for youth to attend.

On Thursday, May 25th at 10:00 am at Old Male High School, 911 S. Brook Street community and faith-based leaders will announce an event taking place this weekend. Leaders are buying up tickets to give to organizations and church groups to make sure youth have something safe to do on Memorial Day weekend.

The chaperoned event will be fun safe and will applaud the youth who are doing what their families, schools and community ask of them.

In conjunction with the announcement WLOU/104.7FM will do a marathon giveaway Thursday and Friday to make sure youth who want to attend that do not have the money will get to enjoy their first weekend on summer break.

Please join us for details of the event, the former University of Kentucky and University of Louisville players who’ve agreed to be a part of Saturday’s event and the community leaders who are stepping up to make sure our children have a place where they can be kids and not worry about their safety.

The VIPP Report: The Acts of Kindness Gala will honor community leaders and area youth

(Louisville, KY) It’s the 2^nd Annual Acts of Kindness (AOK) Gala. It will be held on Saturday, July 15^th at the Kentucky Fair & Expo Center at 8:00 pm.

The gala is a part of the Stamina Foundation, founded by NBA and NCAA champion Derek Anderson. The foundation was created to empower youth and young adults with the resources and the life skills they need to follow their dreams. Our first major project is to open the Stamina Academy. The purpose of the academy is to teach skills to youth both in and out of the school system with the goal of bringing this generation back to life’s basic skills; manners, being respectful to others, self-confidence, self-motivation, and self-education. The Stamina Foundation is excited to announce that their foundation that demonstrates doing the right thing and volunteerism will honor community leaders and area students for a second year.

The purpose of the AOK Gala is to introduce guest to the academy and how to get those doors open. Also, during the evening you will get to enjoy inspirational stories of this year’s honorees. Those names will be released the week of the gala.

Derek Anderson says “I want to help the next generation develop mental training which is a vital life skill component. My goal is to create more leaders and less followers. I want them to be able to have the will power to standup for what’s right. In turn, it becomes infectious and others will follow suit. Let’s SHOW them how GREAT they can become and to let them know that “Everything will be AOK”.

(Louisville, KY) When you think of the Kentucky Derby you think of food, bourbon, horses and parties. Well, TheSlice Charities of Louisville, the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage and PNC Bank proudly present TheSlice @KCAAH. TheSlice-Spice, Style & Soul on Saturday, April 29th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. This year’s theme: A Salute to Muhammad Ali: A Life of Inspiration. The event will be held at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, located in the heart of West Louisville at 1701 West Muhammad Ali Blvd named after the Greatest of All Time, Muhammad Ali.

For the first time, guests will get to see an exhibit of the late heavy weight champion. Ali died on June 3, 2016 and the world turned to Louisville, KY as his family, friends and fans sent him off in a champions way. Throughout the venue you will see a special collection. In the historical procession of Ali through the streets of Louisville the champ did pass KCAAH and the staff thought it was appropriate to have debut his photo exhibit at TheSlice.

“We are excited to have one of Ali’s family members as a special guest”, said Hosea Mitchell, KCAAH’s Chief Operating Officer. Ibn Ali, son of Rahmaan Ali and nephew of Muhammad. Ibn is excited and honored to attend TheSlice on behalf of his family. He’s started a program at the Jewish Community Center in Louisville around June. Additional details will provide in the coming weeks.

TheSlice is the only West Louisville event sanctioned by Kentucky Derby Festival. Chefs, caterers and restaurants from all over the city will give guests a sample of their cuisine. Guests walk around the venue and visit food stations and sample their signature dishes. Throughout the evening, guests will enjoy music provided by The Unlimited Band.

Tickets are $65.00 in advance and $75.00 day of event at the venue. This event is for people 21 years old and up. This is an upscale event where after five attire is suggested. On Monday, March 20^th from 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at the Rudd Heart and Lung Center, 201 Abraham Flexner Way it’s the 17^th annual Breaking Barriers Spotlight Awards. The awards ceremony will honor community service workers, educators and youth who go above and beyond the call of duty to assist those in need.

Refreshments will be served prior to the program so guests can network and obtain information from various organizations setup around the room.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Marques Maybin. Marques is a successful radio sports personality in Louisville. Prior to having his own show, he played with the University of Louisville’s men’s basketball team as their starting guard from 1997 to 2001. In 2003, he was in a motorcycle accident in his hometown of Clarksville, TN that paralyzed him from the waist down.

Marcellus Mayes, President for Metro Disability Coalition says “It’s hard to believe we are in the 17^th year of this celebration. The event is so special because we get the opportunity to recognize individuals for overcoming obstacles that they refused to call a disability. We will also get to salute and say thank you to those that helped with their independency.”

The Metro Disability Coalition is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization comprised of individuals and agencies in the Louisville Metro area. The purpose is to give a better quality of life for people with disabilities.

The VIPP Report: Kentucky Derby Festival teams up with basketball star Derek Anderson for kids basketball camp

(Louisville, KY) The Kentucky Derby Festival is teaming up with former NBA and Kentucky Wildcat star, Derek Anderson, for a basketball camp that will help youth both on and off the court. The Derby Festival Derek Anderson Acts of Kindness (AOK) Camp will be held in conjunction with this year’s Basketball Classic Presented by Papa John’s on Saturday, April 15^th. Anderson will lead the camp and be assisted by this year’s Basketball Classic All-Stars. The camp is for youth 6^th grade and up, but is limited to 50 participants.

Those interested in participating first need to submit a photo or video showing their AOK toward someone or a group in the community and send to AOKBasketballCamp@gmail.com. The submission needs to include name, age, grade, school, phone number, email and a description of the AOK. The deadline for submission is Saturday, March 25^th. Those selected will be notified by March 31^st.

Anderson, a NBA champion with the Miami Heat and NCAA champion with the Kentucky Wildcats says “The best way to help change in our community is by changing our character. It’s time to SHOW our future leaders how to LEAD!”

Each participant will receive a t-shirt, goodie bag provided by Dick’s Sporting Goods, and two tickets to the Derby Festival Basketball Classic presented by Papa John’s.

Muhammad Ali would have been 75 years old on January 17^th, but his influence lives on. I’ve been in contact with a Louisville entrepreneur. He’s had a busy week from making sure the pipes in his business were functional, a Stop the Violence Initiative held on Ali’s birthday to his wife having a baby. Darnell “SuperChef” Ferguson spent the day with his wife Tatahda in an area hospital. Their bundle of joy arrived weighing in at 6 lbs. and 13 oz. and 19 inches long.

Did I mention his name, well its Legend Ali Ferguson. You got it! Named after the “Greatest of All Time”.

The411 with Sherlene Shanklin: There’s a buzz once again that Louisville maybe in the running for a NBA team. I’ve been following this story since the inception of the possibility. Several years ago, it sounded far-fetched but today the tone sounds a little more positive. I spoke to several people and they say it’s possible but all of the planets have to be aligned for it to happen. The first concern is…where will they play? Can the KFC Yum! Center accommodate both the Louisville Cardinals men and women’s basketball teams, special events and the NBA?

Can we afford the ticket prices on a regular basis to sustain the league. The average ticket is $97.00 and could go into several hundred for premium seats. There’s a total of 82 games, which will likely be somewhere around 41 home games in a NBA season plus the playoffs.

Louisville would get help from area cities that do not have a professional team, such as Cincinnati and Nashville.

So, is it possible? I know that Junior Bridgeman and Grant Hill were working on a possible deal. Is it Louisville? I guess we will have to see.

(Louisville, KY) Super Student Athletes Inc. and their Executive Director Mario Urrutia will officially cut the ribbon to their new LIFE facility. The ceremony will take place on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. located at 222 Eiler Avenue.

Community leaders and members that influenced Urrutia will be present to celebrate with the former NFL standout and University of Louisville football star. Urrutia was drafted in 2008 by the Cincinnati Bengals. He went on to play for the New York Jets and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also had a very successful career in arena football. In 2013, he was named AFL Rookie of the Year. The Fern Creek High School graduate decided to return to Louisville to help those who helped him by giving back to his community.

The Super Student Athletes LIFE Center will provide opportunities for youth to learn a variety of lifetime skills focusing on education, community and healthy living.

Urrutia says “My passion is assisting the total athlete from academics to being the best YOU, both on and off the field. I’m passionate about giving youth a fighting chance to be successful. It’s really hard for many to concentrate literally on anything because of their particular circumstances. I have created a safe haven where they can achieve with no distractions because everyone at the LIFE Center all have the same goal and that’s to be successful.”

The program will begin promptly at 11:00 am and will last approximately an hour followed by a tour.

The VIPP Report: Michael Sam will be in Louisville to take part in UofL’s Pride Week

The University of Louisville Michael Sam, the first openly gay man drafted by an NFL team, will deliver the UofL Pride Week keynote address on Nov. 3.

The event is at 7 p.m. , Swain Student Activities Center, Multipurpose Room.

This event is a collaboration between the Student Activities Board and the LGBT Center. The talk is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. Register online via eventbrite.

Sam’s keynote will address his journey, triumphs over hardships, and lessons learned from key mentors in his life.

Sam ended his career at the University of Missouri as a consensus All-American and Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He made history in 2014 as the first openly gay player drafted by an NFL team when he was drafted by the then St. Louis Rams. He is currently a free agent.

This event is part of a series of events planned for UofL Pride Week 2016, hosted by the LGBT center and made possible by more than 40 sponsors from across the campus and community.

The VIPP Report: Summer Olympics maybe over for the athletes but the eLearn Olympic scholars prepare for medal ceremony and celebration

Louisville Central Community Centers (LCCC) will host their Summer eLearn Olympics celebration at 11am on Saturday, September 24, 2016 to recognize nearly 80 medalists and their supporters. Our scholars will be presented with gold, silver or bronze medals and other prizes for their achievements using Study Island, a technology-based system that supports the local school district’s Every 1 Learns initiative. Schools and community organizations who support student achievement will also be recognized. Currently, there’s 1,300 participants in the eLearn Olympics program.

eLearn Olympics was created in 2013 by LCCC as an initiative to celebrate academic achievements of students grades K-12. LCCC’s President, Kevin Fields says “It’s exciting that at this of year everyone is in the Olympic spirit. We cheered on all of the Team USA but we kept a close eye on 2-time Olympic Gold Medalist Angel McCoughtry. The former University of Louisville star and WNBA all-star is a great supporter of the program and visits our youth when she’s in Louisville to motivate the eLearn Olympic team.”

In eLearn Olympics, students win prizes and gain public distinction for completing online, skill-building lessons in Study Island. This program is geared toward helping students achieve proficiency in their common-core academic skill areas that are part of Kentucky Department of Education curriculum standards. eLearn Olympics offers annual recognition for participation and achievement in extracurricular academic programs.

“I want to thank the Wilf Family and the entire Vikings organization, all of my teammates, friends, Eric Sugarman and the amazing Vikings athletic training staff and the fans who have sent me messages and wished me well. Your thoughts and prayers mean a lot to me and have helped me in this difficult time. There are great players and great leaders in our locker room who are going to fight to the end to reach the goals we set for 2016. I will be there mentally, physically and in spirit to support them accomplish those goals.

In order to have a testimony, you have to have a test. I come from amazing DNA, I watched my mom fight and win against breast cancer. We will, as a team, attack my rehab with the same vigor and energy. My faith is strong, my faith is unwavering and my vision is clear. My purpose will not be denied.”

Updated at 6:21pm 8/30/2016: The Minnesota Vikings held a news conference and they say Teddy Bridgewater has a “significant” knee injury. He’s undergoing a MRI and that will tell them more. Follow us for real-time news @thevippreport @vippcomm @sherlenemediapr.

The Minnesota Vikings’ Tuesday practice came to an abrupt end when quarterback Teddy Bridgewater suffered an apparent left knee injury.

The former University of Louisville QB clutched his knee on the ground. An ambulance arrived for him and the remainder of practice was called off.

No details on the exact nature or severity of Bridgewater’s injury but multiple sources say it looks bad. We will have to wait and see.

COMES BY THE KENTUCKY CENTER FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN HERITAGE

(Louisville, KY) On June 3^rd, Louisville native Muhammad Ali died at the age of 74 years of age in Phoenix, Arizona. The Greatest of All Time, (GOAT) had a champion’s sendoff in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. On Friday, June 10^th, streets throughout the city were blocked off so his 17-car processional could take his final journey to his resting place at Cave Hill Cemetery.

The processional led by family owned A.D. Porter and Sons Funeral Home owned by African-Americans has served the community for more than 100 years. They traveled down Old Walnut Street, known today as Muhammad Ali Blvd one last time. Stopping by landmarks and things important to Ali and his family.

When they passed 17^th and Muhammad Ali they approached the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage where Aukram Burton, Executive Director for KCAAH captured these breath-taking and historical photos as hundreds stood at that route to say goodbye to Ali.

As the sun goes down and I begin to prepare for the processional, funeral and memorial service of Muhammad Ali there’s a lot of emotions going through my mind. Visualizing the brief stop on Interstate 64 right by the Muhammad Ali Center, going down Broadway where he would run to train to seeing the red rose pedals as his hearse arrives at Cave Hill Cemetery.

I made many calls inquiring stories about the Louisville native but I also took a lot of calls and emails from those who wanted to share their stories about the “GREATEST”. Many of you have guided me and led me from one interview after another.

Growing up in West Louisville right in the community where a legendary boxer worked and trained is significant in so many ways. The predominantly African-American community is rich in history and tradition. I grew up on Cecil Avenue. Its been in the headlines more than I can count these days but that street when I was growing up generated a teacher that children loved, a prominent minister, a current president of a great non-profit organization and a senator.

Ali’s street was the same. He had teachers, entrepreneurs, physicians, and hardworking people wanting better for their families and especially their children. Many families had no problem working 12 hours a day to see their child get into college. Did you know that Ali had honorary degrees from Kentucky State University and the University of Louisville.

Many of the things Ali did he did out of love and not publicity. There’s people in communities across this world that have the same sense of responsibility.

Friday, June 10, 2016 will be a day for mourners but also a day of celebration because his legacy will live on in the thumbprint he leaves behind. The reason why I said thumbprint instead of footprints. The champ left his thumbprint so that future awards in his honor will have his seal of approval leaving no stone unturned.

The VIPP Report: Remembering Louisville’s own Muhammad Ali

On Friday, June3, the “Greatest Of All Time” has passed away. Muhammad Ali died surrounded by family and loved ones in Arizona. The Louisville, Ky. native born Cassius Marcellus Clay to Cassius Sr. and Odessa Clay on January 17, 1942. Ali was the father of nine children, seven daughters and two sons.

To date Ali remains the only three-time lineal World Heavyweight Champion. He won the title in 1964, 1974, and 1978.

Growing up as a young girl in the same city, I would see Ali on various occasions but when I close my eyes I can vividly see him running down Broadway with his brother by his side. Muhammad and Rahman would run and shadowbox. He would be showing off and many times slowing and/or stopping traffic. As a young girl, I used to say “What in the world is he doing?” Not knowing he was preparing himself to be one of the most influential people in the world. I was familiar with boxing because it was extremely popular then. I even had Greg Page and one of his trainers Leroy Edmerson as members of my church.

In hindsight, we take those moments for granted.

Another special moment is when I ran into Ali on Fourth Street in 1986. He was sitting in the back of a box truck signing autographs in front of the Galleria which is known today as Fourth Street Live. He gave me and my mom an “Introduction to Islam” book. I remembered he laughed about our names because they were so similar (Shirley and Sherlene). He turned to me and said ‘how you spell that’ in his larger than life voice.

I’ve been following the household name pretty much all of my adult life. It was only an added bonus when I had the ability to cover events and stories involving the man who had no problem telling you “I’m so pretty,” “I’m the greatest,” and “The champ is here.” He gave hope to those that saw no hope and a voice to many who couldn’t speak for themselves.

To Louisville who has a street named in his honor, he was hometown, but to the world he was the man who floated like a butterfly and could sting like a bee. He was “The Greatest”.

Muhammad Ali died at the age of 74 leaving his wife Lonnie Ali of almost 30 years and nine children and grandchildren.

The VIPP Report: Two-time Super Bowl Champ Deion Branch will host his football camp in Louisville

SUPER BOWL XXXIX MVP & FORMER U OF L CARDINAL DEION BRANCH RETURNS TO LOUISVILLE FOR HIS ANNUAL CAMP

(Louisville, KY) Two-time Super Bowl champ and SB XXXIX MVP Deion Branch and his foundation returns to Louisville, Kentucky for their 7th Annual Skills & Drills Football Camp. It will be on Saturday, July 9th at D1 Louisville, 12101 Sycamore Station Place. Registration begins at 8:00 am and the camp is from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.

The VIPP Report: Derek Anderson returns to his high school alma mater to host his annual camp

(Louisville KY) NBA & NCAA Basketball Champ and Louisville native Derek Anderson will host his Stamina Camp in the gym named in his honor. Anderson’s camp runs from June 21^st to the 23^rd at Doss High School, 7601 St. Andrews Church Road. It runs from 9 am- 4 pm each day for youth ages 7 to 17. The three-day camp is $150 per child.

Each participant in the camp will receive, a free t-shirt, wristbands, towels, food and drinks.

Stamina Camp is more than learning the basics of basketball and running drills. Derek says “My camp is about learning life skills, common courtesy, and respect for oneself and for others, while becoming the best basketball player they can be. When youth leave the camp they will be better versed on the game both in basketball and in life”.

Anderson is a producer, screenwriter, philanthropist and entrepreneur that played for the University of Kentucky from 1995-1997 playing the guard and small forward positions. In 1996, Anderson along with the other members of the “Untouchables” won the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship. Derek was the 13th overall pick to the 1997 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. (Louisville KY) Tim Barnett Media presents Cardinal Week. The week is designed for loyal fans to come out and meet the former players and have a chance to interact with some of their local heroes while supporting them in their future endeavors.

Cardinal fans will get to see members of the 2013 National Championship team. They won the hearts of the world as they rallied game after game during the NCAA tournament to become the national champs. You will have several opportunities during Cardinal Week to see Russ Smith, Peyton Siva, Kevin Ware and Luke Hancock. Also, a part of the Cardinal family, Terry Rozier he will return to Louisville after playing in the NBA with the Boston Celtics.

On Monday, June 20th, it’s the Russdiculous Golf Scramble at Hunting Creek Country Club, 6807 Foxcroft Road in Prospect, KY. Registration begins at 10 am. Its $800 for a team of four (4). Golfers take to the course at 11:30 am. From 5:30 pm-6:30 pm teams will return to the clubhouse for cocktails and hor d’oeuvres.

Participants will have an opportunity to drive a Porsche for the weekend. All you have to do is enter the “Close to the hole” challenge courtesy of Blue Grass Motorsports. You also have a chance to have Siva and Hancock on your golf team.

From young at heart to our young Cardinal fans it’s the Camp of Champions Basketball Camp. It will be hosted by Siva, Smith, Ware and Rozier. The camp is June 21st-23rd at Louisville Collegiate School, 2427 Glenmary Ave.

The camp will be divided into two sessions. The first session ages 6-10 years of age will hold the session from 9 am-1 pm. The second session is for youth 11-16 years of age. They will be in session from 2 pm to 6 pm. The camp is $215 and space is limited.

Former and current U of L players will stop by and support the camp. Tim Henderson and Luke Hancock will be the camp’s special guests.

On Friday, June 24th, there will be a Meet & Greet at Bluegrass Motor Sports, 4730 Bowling Ave from 7 pm to 9 pm. All five will be in attendance and available for autographs. They are only $20 per autographed item.

On Saturday, June 25th we will have a meet in Greet in Glasgow, KY at Caverna HS. The time is 12p-3p. Each autographed item is $20.

The VIPP Report: Students receive medals and prizes for the participation in eLearn Olympics

Louisville, Kentucky (May 13, 2016)—Louisville Central Community Centers (LCCC) will host their Spring eLearn Olympics celebration at 11am on Saturday, May 14, 2016 to recognize nearly 80 medalists and their supporters. Students will be presented with gold, silver or bronze medals and other prizes for their achievements using Study Island, a technology-based system that supports the local school district’s Every 1 Learns initiative. Schools and community organizations who support student achievement will also be recognized. Currently, there’s 1,400 participants in the eLearn Olympics program.

eLearn Olympics was created in 2013 by LCCC as an initiative to celebrate academic achievements of students grades K-12. LCCC’s Senior Vice President, Kevin Fields, says as we approach the 2016 Olympics in Reno we want to motivate our youth not only in athletics but in academics. As we cheer on Olympian Angel McCoughtry who is a great supporter of our initiative we want to motivate our scholars to achieve at their ultimate potential and to use Study Island throughout their summer break.”

JCPS Director of Volunteer Talent Center Dr. Allene Gold, JCPS Board Member Diane Porter, Gheens Foundation CEO Barry Allen and representatives of the Angel McCoughtry Dream Foundation will join LCCC in honoring these students and their families. The public is invited to attend the celebration on May 14, from 11:00-12:00 am at Old Walnut Street, 1300 W Muhammad Ali Blvd (40203), in the Atrium Room.

We will also recognize the top three schools that had the most medalists during the Spring competition. Price Elementary with 11 medalists, Western Middle School with 10 medalists and there’s a four-way tie with Johnson Traditional, Myers Middle, Meyzeek Middle and Newburg Middle Schools all having five medalists.

There will be three community centers acknowledged during the program. That’s Lighthouse Promise with 20 Spring medalists, Big Brothers Big Sisters with four medalists and Louisville Central Community Centers with a total of three medalists.

A Natural from the Start: The Life and Time of Jimmy Winkfield, International Horseman

A Natural from the Start is an exhibition showcasing the rise and fall of African American jockeys in horse racing, primarily the Kentucky Derby. This exhibit explores the early years of horse racing in which African Americans dominated the sport, and how racism and segregation in the early 1900’s contributed to the decline of Black jockeys as they were vulnerable to hostility and injuries from White jockeys and owners at the time.

Did you know that Jimmy Winkfield, (Kentuckian, and Black jockey) was the last African American to date to win the Kentucky Derby? Did you know that Isaac Murphy was the winningest jockey of all time? In addition, was the 1st Jockey to be inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. Or did you know that Willie Simms perfected a riding style that became the norm in Europe? This exhibition will feature these three jockeys, and a banner dedicated to other Black jockeys with notable dates and their impact on the sport of horse racing.

The VIPP Report: Muhammad Ali’s childhood home broken into before the first tour even takes place

The surveillance camera at the childhood home of Muhammad Ali in Louisville, KY captures this person entering the home and stealing the air conditioner.

The childhood home of Louisville native Muhammad Ali is near completion but now its missing an air conditioner unit thanks to a theft. The home on Grand Ave in West Louisville was renovated to resemble of the home in which the Clay family lived in prior to Ali’s successful boxing career and humanitarian efforts throughout the world.

The owners of the Muhammad Ali Home Museum tell me that they are offering a $500 reward and released some photos and video of the theft.

The home is scheduled for public tours in May 2016.

The VIPP Report: Muhammad Ali’s childhood home ready for tours

Work is almost complete on the childhood home of Cassius Clay aka Muhammad Ali. The Louisville native’s home located at 33^rd and Grand Avenue has been restored to when the “Greatest” and his family lived in the West Louisville home.

The restoration is now complete and the only thing to do is move in the furniture says Rev. Charles Elliott, founder of Jesus and a Job. They help restore the Clay home. This will be all completed in time for the public dedication on Sunday, May 1^st,which is just days prior to the Kentucky Derby. Fans visiting Louisville will have another place to visit while in town.

I’m awaiting official notification on the cost of the tour but as soon as I get it I will file another report.

The VIPP Report: Olympic Gold Medalist Angel McCoughtry’s foundation will honor Louisville youth and present medals and prizes

Louisville Central Community Centers, Inc.’s (LCCC) will receive a $9,500 grant from the Angel McCoughtry Dream Foundation in support of LCCC’s Gheens eLearn Olympics at a presentation on Wednesday, March 9th, 10:00 a.m. at Old Walnut Street, 1300 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd.

Gheens eLearn Olympics seeks to spark a spirit of pride among students, parents, schools and community-based learning places through the incentive-based, educational program. School-age youth who attend Jefferson County Public Schools are encouraged to enhance their education by using on-line out-of-school-time tutorial software to improve reading and math. Kids who show levels of improvement are awarded gold, silver or bronze medals and many of these kids also receive educational prizes and gifts.

The initiative was created in response to the Jefferson County Public Schools’ call for more involvement of community stakeholders to address common core standards and academic achievement. LCCC has recognized over 500 youth for educational improvement using this on-line service over the last two years. “Angel saw a valuable connection with our Gheens eLearn Olympics initiative and her foundation. She has been very supportive of us from the beginning and we are grateful for her continued support,” said Kevin Fields of LCCC.

Angel is a former University of Louisville All-American basketball player who is now a franchise player with Atlanta Dream in the Women’s National Basketball Association. She also plays professionally for the Turkish team Mersin BSB in the Turkish Women’s Basketball League. “I am pleased to be able to give while continuing to play professional basketball through my foundation. As an Olympian, eLearn Olympics really got my attention. Helping LCCC help young people succeed in school is important to my foundation and to me personally,” stated McCoughtry.

Angel was a member of the U.S. Olympic gold medal basketball team in 2012. She plans to try out for the 2016 U. S. Olympic Basketball Team this summer. The next Gheens eLearn Olympics celebration is scheduled for April 6, 2016 at Old Walnut Street. Over 100 participants are expected to be honored and recognized.

Birdgang Brand Clothing is creating a limited edition t-shirt to show their support for former University of Louisville basketball star Kyle Kuric. On November 3^rd, Kuric’s current team in Spain, Herbalife GranCanaria, released a statement saying the 26-year-old went to the hospital with a migraine and doctors discovered he had a brain tumor. Several days later, Kyle went into surgery and currently he remains in ICU. On Saturday, he had some complications but his family and fans remain hopeful. He underwent a second surgery to relieve pressure and fluid, and as of earlier today his condition is improving, but he is still under close observation and medical treatment. Kuric’s family has been appreciative of the support and prayers and that’s why Birdgang Brand decided to do their part.

For a limited time, a special edition Birdgang Brand Clothing t-shirt will be designed in support of Kuric. “We have been in communication with the Kuric family and they support our efforts,” says Danny L. Today, a photo of boxing legend Muhammad Ali popped up on his official Twitter page this morning. It came just days after alleged reports of the Louisville native’s health. International and national media outlets were reporting that “The Greatest” health was deteriorating. The report came from a former business manager that has not seen Ali for two years according to Ali’s spokesman. Last week, Ali went to a NBA in Phoenix to watch several players with Kentucky connections.

Then today, a photo of unshaven Ali was trending at one point. The photo was posted by his wife Lonnie in support of No Shave November.

We’re getting word that former boxing heavyweight champ Muhammad Ali is doing just fine tonight. Ali family spokesman Bob Gunnell tells me, reports that Ali’s health is deteriorating are not true.

Gunnell says the champ spent last night taking in an NBA game in Phoenix, cheering on NBA players with roots in Kentucky.

Gunnell says Ali is doing well.

The VIPP Report: The “Greatest” Muhammad Ali is back in his hometown to honor some special people during his annual Ali Humanitarian Awards

We are just a few days away from the Third Annual Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards. It was created to celebrate the greatness of people from around the world who are making difference in their communities and beyond. The third event will be held at the Louisville Marriott Downtown this Saturday evening, September 19^th at 6:30 p.m.

The fundraising gala honors individuals’ significant contributions around the world toward the attainment of peace, social justice, or other positive actions pertaining to human or social capital. The Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to the multi-talented artist and social justice activist Harry Belafonte. Academy Award winning actress, humanitarian and women’s advocate Geena Davis will be honored as the Muhammad Ali Humanitarian of the Year. Dr. Andrew Moore from Lexington, Kentucky, who founded Surgery on Sunday, will be named the 2015 Kentucky Muhammad Ali Humanitarian of the Year and Rose Mapendo will be honored with the Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Award for Gender Equality.

There’s also be six people under the age of 30 who will be honored with an award for each of Muhammad’s Six Core Principles: Confidence, Conviction, Dedication, Giving, Respect and Spirituality.

Four-time Olympic Gold Medalist Janet Evans will be the emcee and host for the evening. In 1996, Evans was the Olympic Torchbearer in Atlanta that passed the torch to Ali at the Opening Ceremonies.

The VIPP Report: NBA legend Moses Malone passes away at the age of 60

Three-time NBA MVP Moses Malone dies this morning in a Virginia hotel room. A detective with the police department says that there was no indication of foul play. Malone’s body was discovered when he failed to report to a celebrity golf tournament. NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement “We are stunned and deeply saddened by the passing of Hall of Famer Moses Malone, an NBA legend gone far too soon.” Malone was one of the most dominant centers ever to play in the NBA and ABA. With that title it’s obvious that he was named one of NBA’s 50 greatest players.

Malone played for eight teams over the 20 season in the NBA and led the league in rebounding six times.

The 6 ft 10 in. center was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001 and attended the induction ceremonies for this year’s class in Springfield, Massachusetts this weekend before returning to his hometown of Virginia. Moses Malone was 60 years old.

The VIPP Report: The Civil Rights Barnstorming Tour makes a stop in Louisville with pitching star Mo’ne Davis

Today, the Muhammad Ali Center received some very special guests. The Anderson Monarchs arrived in Louisville and wanted to take a tour of the facility. The Monarchs also feature youth pitching sensation Mo’ne Davis. In the photo you see her standing next to the Ali Center’s President Donald Lassere. The young Monarchs will be getting a first-hand look at the places where the major civil rights events of the 20th century took place as part of their Civil Rights Barnstorming Tour. They will meet people who were involved in the Movement, as well as African American ballplayers who played during this era. They’ll also play games against local youth teams in every city and get a chance to make new friends from all around the country.

This summer, as a tribute to Jackie Robinson, the Negro Leagues, and the Civil Rights Movement, their 13 year-old Anderson Monarchs is embarking on a 23-day, 21-city journey – barnstorming their way across America – down through the Deep South, up through the Mid-West, and back east to New York City and, ultimately, back home to Philadelphia – over 4000 miles in all. They are doing this on an authentic Flxible Clipper touring bus.

I just spoke to the coach, and he tells me that the team will play tonight against another local youth team in Skyview Park in Louisville at 7:00 p.m.

The purpose of the tour is to have the youth meet surviving players from the Negro Leagues, visit historic sites – such as Jackie Robinson’s grave site in Brooklyn, Wrigley Field, the Field of Dreams in Iowa, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, the Louisville Slugger Museum, the three remaining stadiums in the country which Negro League teams called home, and the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.

The VIPP Report: Former Cleveland Cavalier Derek Anderson Announces Stamina Basketball Camp

Former NBA and NCAA champion Derek Anderson is proud to announce the return of his Stamina Camp for the third year. “Stamina Camp 15” will be held in Louisville, KY on June 22th-26th at Louisville Collegiate School, 2427 Glenmary Ave. The five-day camp will go from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day where Anderson and his team of coaches will take your child through a series of life skills that can be used both on and off the court.

Anderson says “I like teaching basketball players but I love to help people to be better! At Stamina Camp we all get better at BOTH! I want to teach them how to hold your follow thru, become a great shooter to doing your chores and becoming a responsible person in life. I hope it becomes second nature to them. Sports and Life go hand in hand if you want to WIN in both!”

The Kentucky Wildcat legend is opening the camp to youth from ages 7 to 17. Derek and some of his former teammates will stop by to participate in the camp. He’s also working on a few surprises for the youth. Just to give you an idea, last year, Derek played H.O.R.S.E. and held free throw contests and if the camp’s participant won, Derek would give the winner a pair of signed Jordan Brand shoes.

SIXTH ANNUAL SKILLS AND DRILLS FOOTBALL CAMP

(Louisville, KY) As the school year comes to a close, training for football is in full swing for aspiring athletes. From weight training to running suicides it’s all about the off season that gives you a successful season in the fall. It takes discipline to be successful on the field and what better way to learn from one of the best to play the game.

Two-time Super Bowl champ and Super Bowl XXXIX MVP Deion Branch will host his 6th Annual Skills & Drills Football Camp on Saturday, June 6th at St. X High School, 1609 Poplar Level Road. Registration begins at 8:00 am and the camp is from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.

The camp will promote health, sportsmanship and even scholastic achievement to further a child’s education. The former University of Louisville star will have some of his former Cardinals teammates and friends working the camp.

The camp is for youth ages 7 to 16. The registration fee is only $50, which includes: lunch, goodie bag, t-shirt and personal instruction.

Branch says “By participating in the camp it will give players a chance to get professional instruction and measure their skill set. By starting early, it will give them a leg up on their competition and they will improve as a player by getting the routine in place as the summer begins. I wish I had the opportunity to work with the guys I’m assembling for the youth. This camp gives them a real look at the competitive sport they want to play.”

The proceeds raised during the camp will benefit the Deion Branch Foundation. The VIPP Report: The Deion Branch Foundation prepares for the 2015 Kentucky Derby Marathon/miniMarathon

It’s that time of the year again! The Deion Branch Foundation will be entering the 2015 Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon/miniMarathon on Saturday, April 25, 2015! For the fourth year, Team Branch will be running the Mini (13.1 miles) portion of the race.

Because of all of you, last year we were able to raise a total of $10,725! That’s $22,000 including the Branch Family donation match. We are excited to begin training and even more excited to see if we can reach our goal again this year. In addition to raising funds for the foundation, we will also be donating multiple small grants to non-profit organizations in need, who share our mission of supporting children’s mental, physical and emotional well-being of children in our communities. In order to apply, applicants will need to send a letter on their organization’s letterhead that includes:

Introduction/Information on program. Amount of money needed. How the grant will benefit the children being serviced.

All letters can be mailed to the foundation and must be postmarked by April 1, 2015. Winners will be chosen at random and will be notified no later that April15, 2015. To keep this event special for us, Deion will still be pushing Deiondre the last mile (mile 12)! Upon completion of the event, the Branch Family will MATCH ALL funds raised.
