WuTang10229blackRT_01312019065834_large

Special Report by Sherlene Shanklin, WHAS11 Louisville (ABC Affiliate)

Since the 1970s, hip-hop was destined to become a force to be reckoned with. Slick lyrics meshed with edgy beats kept many emcees constantly evolving their craft.

Twenty-five years ago, a group of individuals from New York translated their street life to gritty lyrics, which many recognized as the harder side of the craft. They blended it with martial arts terminology while giving it a unique mythology known today as hardcore hip-hop.

The members of the Wu-Tang Clan will hit the road to celebrate their silver anniversary of their 1993 debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers).

All nine members – RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa and Cappadonna are headed to Louisville for their “36th Chambers 25th Anniversary Tour on Friday, October 18 and the new Old Forester’s Paristown Hall at 8 p.m.

Wu-Tang is regarded as one of the most influential hip-hop groups of all time with conscious albums like Wu-Tang Forever, A Better Tomorrow, and The W just to name a few of their studio albums.   Some of the singles you might hear at the concert is Can it Be All So Simple, Method Man, Protect Ya Neck, Triumph and The Heart Gently Weeps.

The group has 7 gold and platinum studio albums to their credit. Selling more than 40 million albums.

Tickets go on sale Friday, June 4th at 10:00 am.  When I receive the price point I will update the story.

The VIPP Report: Hip hop artist R. Prophet announces new single and partnership to have his own label

RProphet JesseJames.png

It’s the “RETURN” of R. Prophet dropping knowledge while delivering a conscious message on today’s current climate with his new single

(Atlanta, GA) Two-time Grammy nominated hip-hop/rap artist R. Prophet releases his new single “Jesse James”, that speaks the truth beyond all the fog of negativity when it comes to artists and the climate of the music industry.

The former member of the multi-platinum hip-hop group Nappy Roots has inked a deal.  Prophet will have his own label which he calls it VVS Music 1.  He’s partnered with Ray Hamilton, former CEO of Legion of Doom DJ’s of That Rabbit Distribution which is a joint venture with Sony Music Orchard. Many compare Prophet’s deal similar to the landmark deal made by Master P that changed the hip-hop game when it comes to business and artist music ownership.

With the powerhouse partnership, the highly anticipate album of Prophet, “THE VOICE” with the first single and anticipated smash hit “Jesse James” will rock the radio airwaves, YouTube channels and other media platforms worldwide.  Prophet has made a name for himself in the industry and this single will give his fans a sense of hip-hop doctrine speaking the truth, going against the grain with a rebel like vibe we used to hear when rap legends NWA wanted to make a statement.

Prophet says “I just want people to know my truth and how I’m really feeling. Some folks may think it’s a diss but it’s me speaking my truth. “Jesse James” was inspired by the police brutality R. Prophet came face to face with a few years back.” The single was written to give people the power, control love they deserve and to erase the hate.  R. Prophet is an advocate against police brutality after surviving being tased 15 times at the hands of Kentucky State Police.  It was reported but not confirmed by involved parties but he was later awarded a $1 million-dollar judgment.

With the current climate in society, people are looking for a lyrical voice that can take experiences and incidents ripped from headlines that rock neighborhood across the country.  (Atlanta, GA)

By Sherlene Shanklin, The411 on WHAS11/ABC Louisville

Make sure you DVR Strahan and Sara on Wednesday, March 20th. Hip-hop pioneer Slick Rick will be on the show.  You know that I’m always looking for a connection to the Bluegrass state and of course you know I found one! When you see Slick Rick performing I want to draw your attention to the man on the turntables.  That’s Louisville native and Dwight “DJ Kaos” Chatman.  He’s been Rick’s DJ for many years.  Kaos has been all over the world with this legend of hip hop.

I have been in contact with ABC and they confirm the performance on the show.  I asked,  “is the artist releasing new music?”  He’s actually celebrating the re-release of his debut album The Great Adventures of Slick Rick some 30 years later.  The album was originally released on November 1, 1988.  Still known today as one of the best rap albums by Source Magazine.  In 2008, VH1 ranked the single “Children’s Story” a part of their 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop.

The album consisted of 12 songs, 49 minutes in length.  You may remember some of the songs on this album.  “Children’s Story”, “Teenage Love” and “Hey Young World”.   The album was produced by some of the biggest names in hip hop.  Jason Mizell better known as Jam Master Jay, Hank Shocklee, Ricky Walters and Rick Rubin.

So, tune in to see Slick Rick and DJ Kaos on Wednesday at 1:00 pm (EST) right here on WHAS11/ABC.  I’ve attached the promotional photo ABC and Slick Rick is using to promote the appearance.

The VIPP Report: Louisville native Bryson Tiller announces “Set It Off” tour

BrysonTiller-louisville-620x385-9ff5ad17fc

By Sherlene Shanklin

His “Trap Soul” album took the music industry by storm.  Now, Louisville native and Grammy nominated artist Bryson Tiller announces his “Set It Off” tour and of course his hometown is on the list.

Fans will see Bryson on Saturday, September 16 at the KFC Yum! Center as part of his North American tour.  Metro Boomin and R&B singer H.E.R. will open the show.

His new album “True to Self” is already getting rave reviews and maybe ranked of No. 1 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart. He surprised fans by releasing it on May 26th about a month earlier than its anticipated date.

I will monitor that ranking when it comes out this Sunday, June 4. This is only Bryson’s aka Pen Griffey’s second album.  The RCA artist has been singing and rapping since his high school days at Iroquois High and in 2014 his single “Don’t” became a hit thanks to the internet and his new found followers. Artists like Drake and Timbaland vibed on Tiller’s sound and that’s what got labels interested.

Now, he’s had hits like “Sorry Not Sorry”, “Exchange” and his current hit “Somethin Tells Me”.

Bryson is already collecting plenty of hardware for his trophy case. In 2016, he won Best new artist, Best R& B/Pop artist at the BET Awards. He also won Best New R & B artist at the iHeart Radio Music Awards this year.  His nominations have been adding up too from the Grammy Awards to the Billboard Music Awards.

The tour kicks off on June 23rd in Los Angeles in the Staple Center.

Tickets for the September 16th show in Louisville start at $39.50. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the concert will begin at 7:30 p.m.

The VIPP Report: Rich Homie Quan apology to hip hop legend Lil Kim

RichHomieQuan

If you watched VH1’s Hip Hop Honors you noticed something awkward when it came to hip hop legend and honoree Lil Kim.  I could not figure out what happened sitting at home but now Rich Homie Quan explains and sends his apologizes.  It appears that his nerves got to him.  Here’s his statement:

“I assure you that I never intended to disrespect the Memory of Biggie Smalls. I have long respected his work and his contribution to the rap game. I greatly apologize not only to Biggie Smalls, but also to all of my fans, Biggie Smalls fans and to New York. The city of New York has been nothing but good to me. I felt honored to stand on stage with artists I grew up listening to. Once on stage I had some technical difficulties and must admit I got nervous. I will forever be sorry New York, my fans, Biggie Smalls, Biggie Smalls Fans,  Lil Kim, and all the Hip Hop community for my performance. I hope you can accept my apology. To Lil Kim, Thank you for the opportunity.”
