vipp_report_

With the rich tradition of the Chestnut Street Family YMCA from working tirelessly in the community, promoting health and wellness to making sure area youth have an opportunity to extend their educational endeavors.  For the 37th year, hundreds will gather for their Black Achievers Celebration.

The celebration will take place on Saturday, February 20th at the Galt House in downtown Louisville.  The dinner will begin at 5:30 pm and the program to honor high school seniors and adult achievers will be at 6:30 pm.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Dr. Calvin Mackie.  The inventor, activist and successful entrepreneur will encourage the youth to follow their dreams and to equiped themselves with knowledge by continuing their education.

Judge Olu Stevens will be this year’s adult achiever.  Stevens is an alumni of the program.  Both Mackie and Stevens have been successful in their careers but the night will belong to the youth.

Rachel Cooper is this year’s youth achiever of the year.  To obtain this prestigious honor Cooper has went above and beyond the standard requirements to graduate from high school.  This teen excels both inside and outside the classroom. She will receive multiple scholarship offers from universities both local, regionally and nationally.

Last year’s recipient accepted a full scholarship from Ohio State University and the 2014 recipient is excelling in academics and participating in campus events at Xavier University.

On that night, college scholarships will be announced.  Nearly, one million dollars will be given out from universities, colleges, fraternities, sororities, and organization both large and small.  They all want to be a part of the academic achievement of our youth.  I have the wonderful honor of announcing those scholarships.  For the first time, many of the scholars and their families will hear the amount, the universities and scholarships.

If you have never been to the event, I suggest you attend to see young people in our community doing positive things.

Tickets are only $75.  For more information contact Lynn Johnson with the Black Achievers Program at 502-587-7405.

The VIPP Report: It’s “The Meeting” between Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X

The Meeting.png

As we celebrate the accomplishments of African Americans during Black History Month, the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage will stage a play about a meeting of the minds between two of the most prominent names in the Civil Rights Movement.  They had two totally different approaches but their ultimate goal for racial equality was the same.

On Sunday, February 28th at 3:00 p.m. the Griot Players Series at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, (KCAAH) presents “The Meeting”.  The play is by Jeff Stetson and directed by Baron Kelly.  Admission is only $5 per person.

If Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X had met for an hour or so, what would they have found to say to each other?  Jeff Stetson undertook to answer that question in this one-act play.  The play sets the clock back to the year 1965, when a fictionalized meeting between Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, and Malcolm X took place at the Hotel Theresa in Harlem, New York. One who believed in non-violence while the other believed in self-defense, the scenes in the play reveal the shared pain behind their very different philosophies to address racial inequality are very compelling.

Aukram Burton, Executive Director for KCAAH says “The playwright provides a fascinating premise in the “The Meeting.” The play imagines Martin Luther King visiting Malcolm X at the latter’s invitation in his Harlem hotel room in 1965, just days before Malcolm X’s murder and three years before an assassin’s bullet would kill Dr. King’s life. “The Meeting” is an important play that will provide an engrossing story about two great Black freedom fighters that remains relevant to audiences today. I encourage families and youth groups to see a piece of history”.

This program will be produced by the Kentucky Center African American Heritage in collaboration with the African American Theatre Program at the University of Louisville.

For additional information on “The Meeting” contact 502-583-4100.

To have a cast member on your program and/or a member of the KCAAH executive staff, please contact VIPP Communications.

The VIPP Report: Remembering Civil Rights leader Sen. Georgia Davis Powers

SenPowersSherleneShanklin
The worst feeling in the world to wake up to two dozen text and phone calls that a friend has died.  I drove past her home Friday and looked up.  My heart knew but mind won’t let it be.  I checked on Sen. Georgia Davis Powers on a regular basis.  Initially, some 40 years ago, I had no idea what her title or position was I just knew her as a neighbor on Cecil Avenue in West Louisville.  To hear that she died this morning my heart literally sunk.  I’ve been preparing myself for about a week to get the call but its never easy.  I even refused to write anything because I wanted to write it from the heart.
Georgia Davis Powers was born in Springfield, Kentucky on October 19, 1923.  One of nine children in which she was the only girl.  As a young girl the family moved to Louisville and eventually moved to the street that Cassius Clay known today as Muhammad Ali lived on, which was Grand Avenue.  She used to joke about babysitting Ali along with her brothers.  She would marry her first husband Norman Davis and adopt a son, William “Billy” Davis.  I know her second husband James Powers because that’s when we met.  Well, being four years old on a tricycle is actually how we met.  My job was to ride my bike from my parents house to Senator Power’s house and back.  I had the opportunity to speed up and down that five house distance to my pleasure without a care in the world.  While she was making history.
Who would of thought that 20 years later after college, I would talk to her and she referenced that I was the pretty little girl that had the two long ponytails that used her house as a marker to turn around and ride back down the street.  Back then everyone knew their neighbors and actually looked out for them.  She talked about my parents being the cute young couple that moved on the block.
I was so shocked when she said that.  I used to see her and her husband jump into a big beautiful car and I used to say “I want a car like that when I grow up.” Not knowing that her husband owned a car dealership and that in 1967 she was the first person of color and the first woman elected to the Kentucky State Senate.
Senator Powers worked actively for many years in the NAACP and that’s when she along with the president of the Louisville chapter gave me opportunities to work along side them and helped me perfect so many of the things I do today.  I’ve had countless chances to sit and listen to the senator.  When I started working for WHAS11 Television she would always say “If you ever need anything just call me” and I did.  We were together when the Western Branch Library celebrated their 100th birthday to the 2010 renaming of the Shawnee Expressway to the Georgia Davis Powers Expressway.  She used to call the newsroom and say “Sherlene I need for you to talk to your guys they just said the name of the expressway incorrect.” I would say yes ma’am and get it changed.  To many its something minor but for a woman that changed the climate of Kentucky politics it’s a major thing.
I would sit in the living room and talk about her 1964 March on the State Capitol in Frankfort.  She along with other leaders wanted to support equity in public accommodations.  Civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and baseball legend Jackie Robinson walked with Powers.
She was very open with me about her friendship with Dr. King.  She even told me that she was at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis when King was assassinated in 1968.
Powers retired from her seat in the Kentucky Senate in 1988 but her civil and human rights never stopped.  Just a few days ago she posted something on her social media page, yes, she had a page.

The VIPP Report: Janet Jackson puts all of her concerts on hold until spring

CXBrcpQUsAA3miTSpecial from Sherlene Shanklin, WHAS11 Television, ABC Louisville

Now that we are all back to work did you see Janet Jackson’s announcement on Christmas Eve?  The multi-Grammy Award winning artist didn’t send a news release but took to social media to let her fans and the media know that she was having surgery.  She never mentioned what kind but what was clear is that her tour is on hold.

Jackson says “It breaks my heart to tell you that I am forced to postpone the Unbreakable Tour until spring.  Every date will be rescheduled.  Please hold on to your tickets.”

So, that definitely means that Lexington’s show in Rupp Arena on January 30th is definitely on hold.  The Louisville show in the KFC Yum! Center is not until June. So, that concert is still a go.  Jackson’s team will makeup up the postponed dates before their Europe leg of the tour.

I guess we will have to wait and see.  Make sure you follow me for any updates and future concert announcements.

The VIPP Report: Top shows in 2015

Special report by Sherlene Shanklin, The411, WHAS11 Television/ABC Affiliate

I’m trying to gauge which Louisville concerts did you like the best in 2015.  Give me your top five concerts.  Mine would have to be: #1 PRINCE, #2 Jill Scott, #3 (tie) Marvin Sapp & Yolanda Adams, #4 Babyface & Toni Braxton and #5 (tie) Tank & Mike Epps
I didn’t get to attend Kevin Hart, Dave Chappell, Cedric The Entertainer’s and tons of other shows due to work.  I’m sure you will have them on your list.

My biggest announcement of 2015: Hands down was Prince! I even received an invitation from his team to do his concert review because I was able to break the announcement.  Everyone is still talking about how I did that.  After that one, I didn’t mind if I didn’t get anymore. When you are asked to cover the best…everything else was a bonus.

I wrote over 130 stories and announcements throughout the year.  Some of my biggest media hits:  Prince with over 194,000 views, 986 likes and 663 shares in just a few hours of me saying Louisville will be his FIRST stop.  Impractical Jokers had 115,008 views, 781 likes and 634 shares.  My Diane Sawyer and Jennifer Lawrence preview of ABC interview was viewed 115,000 times with more than 1600 likes and 222 shares in five hours.  Kevin Hart’s announcement was viewed 105,152 times with 830 likes and 519 shares. My Kenny Chesney and Janet Jackson announcements were also big. I had about 100,000 views in the first few hours of their announcements.  Finally, New Kids on the Block with Nelly and TLC announcement had 130,560 views, 466 shares and 873 likes.
This does not include any of my Louisville native Muhammad Ali stories which have created a lot of attention and followers for me.  I cover the “Greatest” on a regular basis.

The VIPP Report: Birds of a feather flock together to rally behind one of it’s own

BIRDGANG APPAREL CREATES A LIMITED EDITION TSHIRT IN SUPPORT OF FORMER

U OF L STAR KYLE KURIC

Birdgang Brand Clothing is creating a limited edition t-shirt to show their support for former University of Louisville basketball star Kyle Kuric.  On November 3rd, Kuric’s current team in Spain, Herbalife GranCanaria, released a statement saying the 26-year-old went to the hospital with a migraine and doctors discovered he had a brain tumor. Several days later, Kyle went into surgery and currently he remains in ICU.  On Saturday, he had some complications but his family and fans remain hopeful.  He underwent a second surgery to relieve pressure and fluid, and as of earlier today his condition is improving, but he is still under close observation and medical treatment.  Kuric’s family has been appreciative of the support and prayers and that’s why Birdgang Brand decided to do their part.

For a limited time, a special edition Birdgang Brand Clothing t-shirt will be designed in support of Kuric.  “We have been in communication with the Kuric family and they support our efforts,” says Danny L. Mosby, Part-Owner of Birdgang Brand.  “His family approved our design and we will now go into production so that fans can show support for Kyle during this trying time.” The Kuric family would like a portion of the proceeds to go to Kyle’s favorite charity, KIDS CANCER ALLIANCE, which supports children battling cancer ages 6-18.  Even during this tough time, Kuric’s family is still thinking of others by giving back; and Birdgang Brand, along with Cardinal fans all over, will be there to show they are in “Kyle’s Korner!”  Birdgang’s goal is to sell 5,000 shirts so that they can make a significant donation.

Taraneh Momeni Kuric, Kyle’s wife says “The turn of events for Kyle is quite ironic because it hits very close to home for him. Kyle has been very involved with the Kids Cancer Alliance for many years and his charity, Kyle’s Korner for Kids, has always reached out to these types of charities. On behalf of Kyle, our family is so grateful that Birdgang and friends will be supporting Kyle’s passion! Things like this goes to show that this is not just about basketball, but that in the end of the day, our state comes together to become one big family. God bless all of you.”

Mosby, who is also Birdgang Brands Chief Financial Officer, says “Kyle is one of our most beloved. He’s a man of strong faith and accomplishment, and he embodied everything a great student athlete should be, while he attended The University of Louisville. When we got wind that he was having emergency surgery, we felt it was our duty to reach out to his family, offer our prayers, and create a concept that our fans and University could get behind and show him how much we appreciated his sacrifices. They were receptive and gracious enough to allow us to do that. We are extremely appreciative of the opportunity to support Kyle, and to donate to his favorite charity. Even if a small gesture in the grand scheme of things, we want to show our appreciation to one of the good ones, and to his family in their time of need.”

Birdgang is asking fans to take a photo and send it to wearetherealbirdgang@gmail.com, so they can post on their social media pages.  The best photo will win two basketball tickets and two free Birdgang shirts of another design.  To pre-order the limited edition shirts and other apparel go to www.wearebirdgang.com/shop.

Special from Sherlene Shanklin, WHAS11 Television/ABC Louisville

Today, a photo of boxing legend Muhammad Ali popped up on his official Twitter page this morning.  It came just days after alleged reports of the Louisville native’s health.  International and national media outlets were reporting that “The Greatest” health was deteriorating.  The report came from a former business manager that has not seen Ali for two years according to Ali’s spokesman.  Last week, Ali went to a NBA in Phoenix to watch several players with Kentucky connections.

Then today, a photo of unshaven Ali was trending at one point.  The photo was posted by his wife Lonnie in support of No Shave November.

If you have an unique story you would like to send me about Muhammad Ali, send it to The411@whas11.com.  You can follow me on Twitter @Sherlenemediapr and Instagram Sherlenemediapro.

The VIPP Report: The 3rd Annual International Day of the Girl will be held at the Muhammad Ali Center

5

The panel discussion will be a talker with Rachel Anne (Dolezal) speaking at the Louisville event

Special from Sherlene Shanklin, WHAS11 Television, ABC Louisville

I’m heading to Nashville later this week to attend the International Black Film Festival but I will return to Louisville just in time for the United Nations’ 3rd Annual International Day of the Girl.  I just RSVP’d for the Sunday, October 11th event at the Muhammad Ali Center.  There will be several film and documentary screenings.  You can see films like Somewhere Between, Skin, The Sapphires and Little White Lie.

There will be a panel discussion over lunch as well.  The discussion will focus on the films and the impact of identity within a culture or for an individual; either assigned or proclaimed.  The topic, How is identity determined? Who decides? How do you fill in your, “I AM? “

The discussion will take place at 11 am.  Ambassador Shabazz will be the moderator.  Dr. Theresa Rajack-Talley, Associate Dean of A&S Pan African Studies; Lacey Schwartz, Documentary Filmmaker; Paula Madison, Philanthropist, Author & Filmmaker and Rachel Anne, Social & Cultural Activist.

You may not recognize the name but you definitely know Rachel Anne.  She made headlines in Spokane, Washington as Rachel Dolezal.  She resigned as president of the Spokane NAACP chapter following questions concerning her race.

Dolezal is now going by Rachel Anne and she is scheduled to be in Louisville.  This is one of the first public appearances since her parents, Larry and Ruthanne Dolezal said their daughter has always identified with the African-American culture but she is Caucasian.

That firestorm caused a lot of people to question Rachel Anne and now she will speak out in Louisville on the topic.

The discussion on Sunday, October 11th will give her an opportunity to explain her stance.  If you would like to hear the panel discussion, you need to RSVP by October 2nd at http://unidotg3.eventbrite.com.

The VIPP Report: This weekend’s goal is to “Power Up” and to encourage others to exhale

Louisville Newest Flyer

This weekend women from all over the country will gather in Louisville, KY to get empowered.  Power to Exhale presents the Power Up Weekend.  The weekend kicked off with a book signing for the founder of the movement Ms. Charla Young.  The television personality, author and entrepreneur works hard in the community to show woman how to embrace their struggles and then make those lemons into lemonade.  It only makes sense that her new book is actually entitled “Life’s Lemons Make Damn Good Lemonade.” To order the book go to www.powertoexhale.com.

On Saturday morning, inspirational speaker, life coach, author, and attorney Iyanla Vanzant of the Oprah Winfrey Network’s Iyanla Fix My Life will be the guest speaker.  The event will take place in the Mercury Ballroom in downtown Louisville.

Young says “In the world today, we have so many senseless killings and unexplainable happenings, much of this is because people have lost hope, love and joy. If we can do anything to restore those core values, we want to do it. Power Up! is an opportunity for women to reclaim what they’ve lost and find their way! Everyone has the Power within to do great things. They just don’t know how to tap into it. Our summit, rally and strut will lead them to their Power source. We are excited about this life-changing experience!”

The VIPP Report: Music icon Janet Jackson adds a third leg to her tour

janet-jackson-to-release-new-album-2015-2

Special from The411 with Sherlene Shanklin, WHAS11 Television

I said it would happen and now “Ms. Jackson” will make a stop in Louisville for her Unbreakable Tour. We have to wait a little while but she will have all of the kinks of the tour out when she comes to the KFC Yum Center. Many of her fans will not mind because her show will be well worth the wait. Janet Jackson will be in Louisville on Wednesday, June 8, 2016.

The GRAMMY® Award-winner and multi-platinum selling artist announced a third North American leg to her UNBREAKABLE WORLD TOUR and of course Louisville was on that list. I understand Janet was listening to her fans and their overwhelming response to both her new music and her tour caused her to add a second city in Kentucky.

Tickets for the Louisville show go on sale to the public beginning at 10am on Saturday, September 19 at www.livenation.com, www.ticketmaster.com, the KFC Yum! Center box office and all Ticketmaster outlets.

The VIPP Report: A mother shares her experience in the child support system in her new book which will empower mothers and caregivers

Inthemale

Denise Bentley is a leader in Kentucky politics and community affairs but she’s a champion when it comes to parental support.   She’s fought for years personally and saw first-hand the obstacles, loopholes and flaws in the child support system. Now, Bentley is sharing her private struggle in her new book, “LADIES ITS IN THE MALE” How to finally get your child support.

She’s now making sure mothers and caregivers have the needed information to get financial support for their children.  A self-help guide to child support, and is your one stop shop for justice. Bentley says “If the system has failed you, and you are not getting justice, learn how to make the system work for you and your child!”

On Saturday, September 19th from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm, there will be a book signing along with a “For Women Only” discussion at Barasti located at 3rd & Oak.

The child support advocate says “Writing this book was a painful journey. I was motivated to complete it by the millions of women in the battle. Non-payment of child support is at epidemic levels, over $50 billion owed nationally and over $50 million owed right here in Louisville. We owe our children and they deserve better.”

Bentley has worked tirelessly for nearly 30 years fighting to repair what she deems as an “a broken system.” As she continues to serve as an advocate it’s becoming more important to equip women with the knowledge and to mentor not only in Louisville but across the country by navigating them through the inadequate child support system.

As a local elected official and top aide to the Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, Bentley launched the first insert in 2005, in The Courier Journal Newspaper, outing thousands of deadbeat parents from the city. The first year the insert was published it netted the local Child Support Office over $1,000,000 dollars. That campaign’s success is evidenced by the fact that the Child Support Office has continued to publish the insert annually, and moreover, has collected over $13.4 million in past-due child support since its inception.

Special by Sherlene Shanklin, WHAS11 Television

The411 with Sherlene Shanklin:  The untimely death of Stephen Garrett on February 25, 2008 shocked music fans, his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky and especially his family and close friends.  Many of you may not recognize the name Stephen Garrett but many called him “Static/Major”.   The Grammy Award winning singer, songwriter, producer and member of the R & B trio Playa has an extensive catalog that he leaves behind as his legacy. From songs like “Cheers 2 U”, Lil Wayne’s “Lollipop”, Drake’s “Look What You’ve Done”, and Ginuwine’s “Pony”.

With all of the music in his life you would think that was the most important thing but it was something that helped keep him grounded.  Garrett was a family man and it was important to the music legend.  To continue and honor his legacy, his wife Avonti Garrett and their children want you to come out and celebrate his life.  Avonti has started a foundation called “To Save A Life Foundation”.  I’ve been in communication with Avonti and I will let her explain what the foundation plans to do this weekend.

NOW YOU CAN HEAR FROM THE WOMAN WHO INVESTED IN HERSELF TO LOSS

200 POUNDS ON HER WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY

It was a beautiful Saturday morning in Louisville, Kentucky when Asia Renee Ford gained national attention because she was trying to teach her children that whatever you may be going through in life, “Don’t Give Up”.  The 35 year old mother of three started her lifestyle change journey two years ago weighing 474.  Fast forward, two years later and 200 pounds lighter Asia decides to participate in the Rodes City Run, 10K race held in Louisville.  This is not her first race, she did it in 2014 and all she wanted to do was beat her time.  Recovering her pneumonia and taking antibiotics, Asia could of have easily made an excuse not participate.

Asia set out on Saturday, March 21st to finish that race and that’s exactly what she did.  During mile four with two miles to go, she felt her body shutting down on her but she was determined.  A Louisville Metro Police officer saw Asia and her son and went to her aid not knowing that she was saying a prayer for strength and the will to keep going when the officer appeared and tried to assist her.  Officer Gregory initially thought Asia would stop but within seconds, then he realized that she would not quit. He helped her at mile five when she slowed down again. So, he assisted her to get to the finish line with emergency personnel following close behind.  The EMT, and a photographer snapped a couple of photos and the photos went viral.  Media outlets from all over the world have contacted Asia from ABC News, People, Time, CBS to the Washington Post.

You know the story of Asia Ford’s race on that day, but now you can hear from her on how she got to that day.  From her weight loss journey, her strong support system, her faith in herself and God.  She’ll be the first to tell you that every day is a journey but with lifestyle changes you can see results.  You can see her updates on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. You can follow her journey, tips, and advice she will give to help you start the journey.  There’s also a Go Fund Me Page for you to review http://www.gofundme.com/pxa4cw.  Please consider supporting.

Asia says “I started my lifestyle change 2 years ago after my husband at the time lost his hand in an amputation due to diabetes. My kids were old enough to understand everything the doctor said and I knew right then and there, we were letting our kids down. It was time to change! I joined a boot camp called Aspirations with the help of a friend and changed the way I ate. At 474 lbs. it was a struggle but now 217 lbs. down I know I’ll be around for my kids and see them graduate, go to college, get married. I’m grateful to God that I woke up and took my life back”

World renowned sculptor Ed Hamilton and his wife Bernadette had the wonderful opportunity to meet the Prince of Wales. Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall made a trip to the United States and Louisville, KY was on their schedule.  The Hamilton family met the royal couple on Friday in an intimate meet and greet.

Hamilton has many works all over the world. He created the Spirit of Freedom”. That was the first National Memorial in the District of Columbia has achieved worldwide acclaim.
That was a tribute to the Colored Soldiers and Sailors of the Civil War now stands at 10th and U Streets NW in Washington D.C. It was dedicated on July 18, 1998.
Other public memorials of note include the Amistad Memorial in New Haven, CT. 1992, the Joe Louis Memorial dedicated at Cobo Hall in 1987, the
Booker T. Washington Memorial dedicated May 12, 1984, Whitney M. Young Jr. dedicated in Frankfort, Kentucky on the Kentucky State University campus, October 9, 1998, the Lenny Lyles Memorial dedicated October 13, 2000 at Cardinal Park Complex, on the University of Louisville campus.
Ed created a Memorial to honor York, the slave of William Clark, who was a vital part of the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1803-1806. The 8’ ft. heroic Bronze is mounted on a four foot sculpted natural rock is
on the Belvedere in downtown Louisville, Kentucky.
The York Memorial was part of the Bicentennial celebration of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the Corps of Discovery. The Abraham Lincoln Memorial at Waterfront Plaza is a memorial that consists of a twelve-ft. scale bronze of  Abraham Lincoln as he is sitting on a sculpted rock. Also there are four bas-relief bronze plaques, 4×6 scale.  The Lincoln Memorial was dedicated on June 4, 2009 at Waterfront Park, Louisville Kentucky.  In 2014, he unveiled The Unfinished March of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Newport News, Virginia.

I spoke to Hamilton this evening and he and his family are still excited about the experience.  He never thought he would have this opportunity but he has great friends and when the opportunity presented itself he was able to meet the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.
