The panel discussion will be a talker with Rachel Anne (Dolezal) speaking at the Louisville event

Special from Sherlene Shanklin, WHAS11 Television, ABC Louisville

I’m heading to Nashville later this week to attend the International Black Film Festival but I will return to Louisville just in time for the United Nations’ 3rd Annual International Day of the Girl.  I just RSVP’d for the Sunday, October 11th event at the Muhammad Ali Center.  There will be several film and documentary screenings.  You can see films like Somewhere Between, Skin, The Sapphires and Little White Lie.

There will be a panel discussion over lunch as well.  The discussion will focus on the films and the impact of identity within a culture or for an individual; either assigned or proclaimed.  The topic, How is identity determined? Who decides? How do you fill in your, “I AM? “

The discussion will take place at 11 am.  Ambassador Shabazz will be the moderator.  Dr. Theresa Rajack-Talley, Associate Dean of A&S Pan African Studies; Lacey Schwartz, Documentary Filmmaker; Paula Madison, Philanthropist, Author & Filmmaker and Rachel Anne, Social & Cultural Activist.

You may not recognize the name but you definitely know Rachel Anne.  She made headlines in Spokane, Washington as Rachel Dolezal.  She resigned as president of the Spokane NAACP chapter following questions concerning her race.

Dolezal is now going by Rachel Anne and she is scheduled to be in Louisville.  This is one of the first public appearances since her parents, Larry and Ruthanne Dolezal said their daughter has always identified with the African-American culture but she is Caucasian.

That firestorm caused a lot of people to question Rachel Anne and now she will speak out in Louisville on the topic.

The discussion on Sunday, October 11th will give her an opportunity to explain her stance.  If you would like to hear the panel discussion, you need to RSVP by October 2nd at http://unidotg3.eventbrite.com.

The VIPP Report: This weekend’s goal is to “Power Up” and to encourage others to exhale

Louisville Newest Flyer

This weekend women from all over the country will gather in Louisville, KY to get empowered.  Power to Exhale presents the Power Up Weekend.  The weekend kicked off with a book signing for the founder of the movement Ms. Charla Young.  The television personality, author and entrepreneur works hard in the community to show woman how to embrace their struggles and then make those lemons into lemonade.  It only makes sense that her new book is actually entitled “Life’s Lemons Make Damn Good Lemonade.” To order the book go to www.powertoexhale.com.

On Saturday morning, inspirational speaker, life coach, author, and attorney Iyanla Vanzant of the Oprah Winfrey Network’s Iyanla Fix My Life will be the guest speaker.  The event will take place in the Mercury Ballroom in downtown Louisville.

Young says “In the world today, we have so many senseless killings and unexplainable happenings, much of this is because people have lost hope, love and joy. If we can do anything to restore those core values, we want to do it. Power Up! is an opportunity for women to reclaim what they’ve lost and find their way! Everyone has the Power within to do great things. They just don’t know how to tap into it. Our summit, rally and strut will lead them to their Power source. We are excited about this life-changing experience!”

The VIPP Report: NBA legend Moses Malone passes away at the age of 60

MosesMalonegettyimages

Special from Sherlene Shanklin, WHAS11 Television, ABC affiliate

Three-time NBA MVP Moses Malone dies this morning in a Virginia hotel room.  A detective with the police department says that there was no indication of foul play.  Malone’s body was discovered when he failed to report to a celebrity golf tournament.  NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement “We are stunned and deeply saddened by the passing of Hall of Famer Moses Malone, an NBA legend gone far too soon.”  Malone was one of the most dominant centers ever to play in the NBA and ABA.  With that title it’s obvious that he was named one of NBA’s 50 greatest players.

Malone played for eight teams over the 20 season in the NBA and led the league in rebounding six times.

The 6 ft 10 in. center was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001 and attended the induction ceremonies for this year’s class in Springfield, Massachusetts this weekend before returning to his hometown of Virginia.  Moses Malone was 60 years old.

Well, the number says it all.  Universal’s N.W.A. biopic earned$56.1 million in its debut according to early estimates.  They nearly doubled what it took to make the $29 million dollar film.  Director F. Gary Gray’s film charts the formation and rise of the influential rap group.

N.W.A. members Dr. Dre and Ice Cube served as producers on the film, which has Ice Cube’s real son O’Shea Jackson Jr. playing his father.

Warner Bros. PG-13-rated adaptation of the 1960s television series “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” debuted in third place, behind “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,” with what critics call a sluggish $13.5 million.

The VIPP Report: Mixed Nation introduces their “We Are One” Tour & Documentary

MixedNation

Communities across the country are on edge due to recent violence.  People are taking to the streets, social media, media outlets and legislators to have their voice be heard.  I found a group created by former University of Louisville basketball standout Luke Whitehead.  It’s called Mixed Nation.  Whitehead calls it a multicultural movement that celebrates diversity and promotes cultural harmony.

He was tired of hearing the constant negativity that is being promoted.  The mission of Mixed Nation is to empower, inspire and embrace people from all walks of life. Luke says for the past five years Mixed Nation has been making a positive impact online and reaches millions of people per week.

The last time, I looked at the Mixed Nation Twitter page had almost 82,000 followers.

The momentum of the just the social media alone is creating a Mixed Nation Movement.  In September, they will launch in Louisville, Kentucky the “We Are One” Tour and Documentary.

They will travel the nation promoting a positive, multicultural message while collecting beautifully blended stories to create an inspirational documentary. “It seems like everyday there’s another sad story of hate and ignorance,” says Whitehead. “It’s time to take a stand and show that love is greater than hate. Together we can make a difference…the world needs this!”

Mixed Nation launched a Kickstarter campaign to help make the “We Are One” Tour & Documentary a reality. The campaign ends August 30th and they need your support to make this happen! Please visit their Kickstarter Page at www.bitly.com/mnweareone.

The VIPP Report: A gospel musical was created to honor a Louisville civil rights leader

RevLouisColeman

Special from Sherlene Shanklin, WHAS11 Television, ABC Affiliate

I used to use the number 445-2509 religiously.  It belonged to the late Rev. Louis Coleman.  To his close friends they used to call him “Buster”.  I called him “Revy Rev”.  If you knew him personally, you knew he was passionate about others especially when it came to civil rights.  He had no problem telling you like it is.

I was his producer for his radio show “Coleman Speaks”.  We both were new to the positions but we worked hard to make it a successful show.  Coleman was so unpredictable that he kept me sharp and on my toes.  Our show would start at 9 am on Saturdays and most days he got there just minutes before the show started.  Some days he would cut it so close, I would say to myself “You better go grab a newspaper and get ready to talk about hot topics because he’s not going to make it.” He never let me down, it was actually comical looking back on it.

On several occasions, Coleman would hand me his phone and tell me “If it rings, answer it”.  I found myself in disbelief some days when I answered his phone.  I’ve spoken to  Martin Luther King III, son of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr;  Rev. Jesse Jackson sitting on the airport tarmac holding up the departure so he could talk to Coleman on the show and activist Dick Gregory.

If “Rev” was  still alive, he would be travelling to other cities that’s made national headlines in in his purple van supporting other leaders like they supported him.

Former Courier Journal journalist Larry Muhammad decided to create a tribute for the civil rights leader.  It’s fondly named Buster! A Gospel Musical.  Gregory Rahming has some big shoes to fill.  He will be Coleman.  Sheryl Rouse will be Mattie Earl Mathis, Samina Raza is Anne Braden, Chauncey Arnold will be Willie Gray, Shane Dickerson as Rev. Bobby Burks and Ernie Adams will play Rev. George Edwards.

If you had to be around Coleman you would always see him with a clipboard, cell phone and his bull horn.

Muhammad will use that bull horn as a symbol of compassion and power by one of the most outspoken leaders of our time.

You can see Buster! At the Henry Clay Theatre at 604 S. Third Street.  Opening night is Thursday, July 16th and it runs through the 26th.  Tickets are $20 at the door and show time is at 7:30 pm.  For additional information you can call 502-727-7972.

The VIPP Report: Misty Copeland named first black female dancer in the history of the American Ballet Theatre

MISTYCOPELAND

Special report contributed by Sherlene Shanklin, WHAS11, ABC Louisville

Misty Copeland is having a great week in the eyes of the arts community.  Copeland made her New York debut in the lead role of “Swan Lake”, which is one of the most important roles in a ballerina’s repertoire.  Today, she woke up to some even bigger news.  She had received a promotion.  The Missouri-born dancer was named the principal dancer at the American Ballet Theatre.  Copeland is the first black woman to achieve that status in the company’s 75-year history.

A principal dancer explained to me is the highest rank within a professional dance company.  They are likely the star of the company.

Over the last several years, the 32 year old has become a strong voice for diversity in dance.  She even penned a best-selling memoir, , “Life in Motion: An Unlikely Ballerina.”

Throughout the day, she has received congratulatory messages from entertainers and other artists in the industry from Taye Diggs, Star Jones to the Oprah Winfrey Network.

Copeland joined the company in 2001 and was appointed in a soloist spot in August 2007.

The VIPP Report: The Civil Rights Barnstorming Tour makes a stop in Louisville with pitching star Mo’ne Davis

Courtesy: Muhammad Ali Center

Courtesy: Muhammad Ali Center

Special report contributed by Sherlene Shaklin, WHAS11 Television, ABC Louisville

Today, the Muhammad Ali Center received some very special guests.  The Anderson Monarchs arrived in Louisville and wanted to take a tour of the facility.  The Monarchs also feature youth pitching sensation Mo’ne Davis.  In the photo you see her standing next to the Ali Center’s President Donald Lassere.  The young Monarchs will be getting a first-hand look at the places where the major civil rights events of the 20th century took place as part of their Civil Rights Barnstorming Tour.  They will meet people who were involved in the Movement, as well as African American ballplayers who played during this era. They’ll also play games against local youth teams in every city and get a chance to make new friends from all around the country.

This summer, as a tribute to Jackie Robinson, the Negro Leagues, and the Civil Rights Movement, their  13 year-old Anderson Monarchs is embarking on a 23-day, 21-city journey – barnstorming their way across America – down through the Deep South, up through the Mid-West, and back east to New York City and, ultimately, back home to Philadelphia – over 4000 miles in all. They are doing this on an authentic Flxible Clipper touring bus.

I just spoke to the coach, and he tells me that the team will play tonight against another local youth team in Skyview Park in Louisville at 7:00 p.m.

The purpose of the tour is to have the youth meet surviving players from the Negro Leagues, visit historic sites – such as Jackie Robinson’s grave site in Brooklyn, Wrigley Field, the Field of Dreams in Iowa, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, the Louisville Slugger Museum, the three remaining stadiums in the country which Negro League teams called home, and the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.

StephenGarrettcourtesyAGarrett

Special by Sherlene Shanklin, WHAS11 Television

The411 with Sherlene Shanklin:  The untimely death of Stephen Garrett on February 25, 2008 shocked music fans, his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky and especially his family and close friends.  Many of you may not recognize the name Stephen Garrett but many called him “Static/Major”.   The Grammy Award winning singer, songwriter, producer and member of the R & B trio Playa has an extensive catalog that he leaves behind as his legacy. From songs like “Cheers 2 U”, Lil Wayne’s “Lollipop”, Drake’s “Look What You’ve Done”, and Ginuwine’s “Pony”.

With all of the music in his life you would think that was the most important thing but it was something that helped keep him grounded.  Garrett was a family man and it was important to the music legend.  To continue and honor his legacy, his wife Avonti Garrett and their children want you to come out and celebrate his life.  Avonti has started a foundation called “To Save A Life Foundation”.  I’ve been in communication with Avonti and I will let her explain what the foundation plans to do this weekend.

The VIPP Report: Prince kicks off his tour in Louisville and Sherlene Shanklin reviews the show

Prince & 3RDEYEGIRL "HitnRun" Tour Opener - Louisville

Special by Sherlene Shanklin, WHAS11 Television, Louisville, KY

“On Selection Sunday the HITNRUN USA Tour was a number one pick for concerts in 2015” Prince and 3RDEYEGIRL performed four shows in two days in Louisville.

This time last week, Prince fans were scrambling to find tickets. When I announced that music legend Prince would be in Louisville to kickoff his U.S. tour, I instantly picked up followers. Prince gave fans an one week notice and the tickets sold out in record time causing Live Nation to add not one but a total of three additional shows over a two day period.

When I got word that I would be attending the last show in Louisville to give a review of the concert, I knew he would leave fans wanting more. Well, I was right.

With it only being March, I have to say Prince with 3RDEYEGIRL with Louisville native Hannah Welton on drums is the best concert of the year. Since the concert was held on Selection Sunday, I would have to use basketball analogy and call it a slam dunk causing real madness in March for music lovers.

The Louisville Palace had 2,600 screaming fans including myself when he took the stage to “Let’s Go Crazy”. That was so appropriate because fans went crazy when the music interlude started. I met some fans waiting for the 11 pm show and they told me if Prince is in a good mood, the show will be taken to another level. Well, he gave that positive sign almost immediately by pulling off his sunglasses and then he flashed his million dollar smile that confirmed to his fans that his jam session was officially underway. Prince even pulled two couples from Louisville on stage and they danced during his performance.

Some dozen songs later, an encore performance was underway and a solo from Welton. Fans stood nearly a hour and a half, screaming, singing along and taking you back in time because yes Prince did sing some of his biggest hits that made him a legend. The production and timing of his show was seamless. Vibrant colors transitioning the change of a song. Prince used the whole stage from standing right in front of the stage with his “symbol” microphone stand to the side of the stage where his keyboard was positioned.

The intimate venue made you feel like you were in a private show. I need to warn you that security has eyes on you and your electronic devices. They walked up and down each aisle. If security catches you, they would flash you with a light and someone would come and escort you out of the venue.

Prince addressed fans about 80 minutes into the show, Prince said “I like this place”. He also told the audience that Louisville had two things, Muhammad Ali and Hannah Welton and fans showed their love with a loud applause. Welton went into a serious jam session for her hometown crowd. Prince, members of 3RDEYEGIRL, backup singers and the keyboard player all left the stage to give Hannah her moment. Once she finished giving fans an unbelievable performance Prince returned to the staged to thank everyone for attending.

As they exited the stage Hannah threw up a heart sign to fans as she left.

I would say they left to a standing ovation but you really need to sit for that to happen. Fans NEVER sat down during the entire show.

This one of the most diverse concerts I have ever attended. From every race to a 12 year old getting to attend his very first concert as a birthday gift from his mother. The Hit and Run Tour is a home run for fans because Prince is hitting a grand slam with this tour.
