(Louisville, KY) Legacies Unlimited in partnership with the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, (KCAAH) & the University of Louisville Archives & Special Collections presents Celebrating the Legacy of Black Louisville on Friday, January 26^th and 27^th at KCAAH located at 1701 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd formerly known as Old Walnut Street. This year’s theme is “Linking the past to the present.”

On Friday, January 26^th from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm there will be a reception and the opening of exhibits. There will be five works on exhibit: Two Centuries of Black Louisville…the Exhibit; The Expressionism of Victor Sweatt; Louisville Entertainers & Musicians Exhibit Part 1; The textile designs of “Bag Lady: Zephra May Miller and The Folk Art of Louisville’s Marvin Finn.

From 7:30 pm to 10:00 pm KCAAH will transform into the most prominent club housed on Old Walnut Street known today as Muhammad Ali Blvd. In the 1940’s and 50’s everyone would dress up and head down to the Top Hat Club. Jazz would be bellowing out into the streets from some of the greatest jazz artists of their time. So, by linking the past to the present, it’s Jazz at the Top Hall featuring vocalist/musician Gayle King and Hammond B-3 along with Kendall Carter and his quintet. General admission is $30.00 per person.

On Saturday, January 27^th starting at 9:00 am there will be workshops discussing the historic 2^nd Baptist Church in New Albany, IN entitled Pathway to Freedom. The free workshop takes you back in time when the church was a beacon of hope and served as a pathway to the Underground Railroad. Following that workshop will be a jug band music session. German & Irish immigrants along with slaves created this unique sound that left a lasting impression on music’s culture.

At 12:00 pm, guests will get to enjoy The Listening Room. Music from the 1950’s, 60’s & 70’s recordings from Louisville’s African American entertainers and musicians provided by the Soulful Sounds of Derbytown.

To close out the weekend, it’s The Walnut Street Revue featuring Louisville native Vic Frierson. It’s A Song for You: A Tribute to the Life & Music of Luther Vandross. Frierson will celebrate the life and music of Luther Vandross. The event begins at 7:30 pm with Tony Fish & Band. Hosted by WLKY-TV’s Ann Bowdan. General admission tickets are $40 per person. The VIPP Report: I.M.A.G.I.N.E. PEACE NOW at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage

(Louisville, KY) As a direct reaction to the violence overwhelming our communities, The Kentucky Center for African American Heritage in collaboration with ArtSeed presents I.M.A.G.I.N.E. PEACE NOW (Innovative Merger of Art and Guns to Inspire New Expressions of Peace Now).

Approximately 50 works from I.M.A.G.I.N.E. PEACE NOW, will be exhibited at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage in Louisville, Kentucky. The opening reception will be on Saturday, January 20, 2018 3-6 pm and will be on display until March 17, 2018 at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, 1701 West Muhammad Ali Blvd., Louisville, Kentucky 40203 (Free & Open to the Public).

I.M.A.G.I.N.E. Peace Now is organized by renowned metal smith artist Boris Bally, featuring decommissioned guns transformed into art objects by artists from the United States and five other countries. Bally brings together like-minded artists from around the world to make a powerful statement about gun violence in America and artistic expressions of peace.

I.M.A.G.I.N.E. PEACE NOW constructs a theoretical portrait of violence — calling on themes of greed, machismo, death, systematic oppression, irony, and beauty. Each artist’s interpretation of the gun as an object is insightful. The exhibitions will serve as an artistic catalyst for not only critical discussion, but ongoing action.

The bulk of the I.M.A.G.I.N.E. PEACE NOW exhibit will be shown at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage. In addition, ArtSeed will host a small exhibition at their gallery, 1931 East Spring Street, New Albany, Indiana, from January 12 thru March 16, 2018. The exhibition will include six works from the I.M.A.G.I.N.E. PEACE NOW exhibit in conjunction with the works of Louisville artist, Kenneth Hayden. Hayden, is a native Kentuckian whose work has been exhibited internationally and is included in public and private collections. Hayden’s use of gun and lotus imagery is inspired by the 1960’s antiwar movement.

The VIPP Report: Annual Hope Awards Showcase Members of the West Louisville Boys and Girls Choirs

(Louisville, KY) The West Louisville Performing Arts Academy (WLPAA) d.b.a. West Louisville Boys and West Louisville Girls Choirs, (WLBC/WLGC) announces their 18^th Annual Hope Awards Dinner Concert on Saturday, December 9^th at the University Club on the University of Louisville’s Belknap Campus. The dinner concert will begin at 6:00 p.m.

This year’s McDaniel Bluitt Hope Award recipient is Kentucky Senator for 33^rd District Gerald A. Neal. “He works tirelessly in the community. Many see him on television but the things you don’t see that got the attention of my organization. Sen. Neal has made several visits to talk to members of both choirs. He was candid with them and helped them understand what it takes to be a leader in the community. His knowledge was invaluable and he demonstrates all the characteristics to be this year’s honoree,” says McDaniel Bluitt, Boys Choir Director.

Senator Neal did highlight his honor but the accomplishments of the choirs by saying “I congratulate the students and leadership of the West Louisville Performing Arts Academy, members of the West Louisville Boys and Girls Choir for their dedication, educational obtainment, and for making a difference in the world. It is through the pursuit of excellence that they plan, prepare, and ultimately perform at a high level.”

History

West Louisville Boys Choir began in November 1990. The choir is directed by McDaniel Bluitt, a retired vocal music teacher with twenty-nine (29) years of experience. He received his B. M. ED. from the University of Louisville School Of Music and a Masters in Counseling from Western Kentucky University. The Boys Choir has performed throughout the commonwealth, for mayors, governors other national dignitaries. The Boys Choir’s first European Tour established international prominence in Paris, France and London, England. They received a superior rating during their first international music competition in the Bahamas. They were also awarded first place in the Music Festival at Sea.

The West Louisville Girls Choir made its debut in November 2002. The choir is directed by Mrs. Mamie Bluitt who received her B.M.ED. from the University of Louisville School of Music. The Girls Choir is also a performing choir. Some of its more notable performances are: Governor Patton’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration in Frankfort, Kentucky, ECHO, Women for Women Conference and at Cincinnati’s National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Their first Southwestern Tour to Texas was held in 2010.

THE TWO-WOMAN PLAY IS SET DURING THE TURN OF THE CENTURY BUT IRONICALLY RESEMBLES TODAY’S SOCIETUIAL ISSUES

(LOUISVILLE, KY) The Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, (KCAAH) in collaboration with Simmons College of Kentucky presents: Miss Ida B. Wells, a play by Endesha Ida Mae B. Wells and directed by Nefertiti Burton. There will be two performances on Sunday, October 22^nd at the KCAAH located at 1701 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd. The afternoon matinee begins at 3:30 p.m. and the evening show will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Ida B. Wells was a civil rights pioneer and one of the founding members of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, (NAACP), and journalist. She was very influential because she had the gift of writing but she never received money for craft. That untold story brings you to Louisville. Rev. Dr. William J. Simmons, born a slave became the publisher of the American Baptist Newspaper, President of the National Press Association and the second president of the college we know today as Simmons College of Kentucky, a HBCU. Rev. Simmons paid Wells for her stories and made her a correspondent for the paper. Wells went on to be known as the “Princess of the Press” and traveled to write for the American Baptist.

A TRIBUTE CONCERT IS ANNOUNCED REMEMBERING LOUISVILLE NATIVE STATIC MAJOR, THE MAN WHO PENNED HITS FOR MUSIC’S BIGGEST STARS

FANS WILL HEAR FOR FIRST-TIME NEVER RELEASED MUSIC

(Louisville, KY) Stephen Garrett also known in the entertainment world as “Static Major” made a lot of hits for artists like Lil Wayne, Aaliyah, Jamie Foxx, Diddy, Pretty Ricky, Ginuwine, Nicole Wray and Playa in which he was a member. The Grammy Award winning artist, producer and songwriter died on February 25, 2008 at the age of 33, leaving an unimaginable legacy and a catalog of never heard music.

On Saturday, November 25, 2017 in Static Major’s hometown of Louisville, Kentucky family, friends and fans will come together to be a part of the Louisville Legend’s tribute concert. It will be held at The Gramercy, 620 S. 3^rd Street. There will be some surprise special guests attending the event.

The tribute event was created after Static’s untimely death due to a medical error bringing his life and passion for music to a stand-still. His widow, Avonti Garrett is determined to keep his legacy and passion for music and the arts alive. She fondly remembers her husband and works just as hard as he did to keep his memory and music alive.

“Music is like breathing” a common phrase Static would say according to Avonti Garrett. “He was so talented that he could bring someone else’s vision to life. He was before his time and truly gifted. When you attend on November 25^th, you will receive a special treat. I will debut some of Static’s music never heard by the public. You will be blown away because he was truly ahead of his time and I’m excited for everyone to hear it.”

The VIPP Report: Jazz artists begin to arrive in Louisville to pay tribute to Lionel Hampton for his contributions in music

LOUISVILLE, KY – The Lincoln Foundation in partnership with Dick Sisto, Ken Clay, Owsley Brown III, Louisville Public Media, Owsley Brown II Family Foundation, The Kentucky Center, Mike Balter Mallets and Vandoren Saxophone Reeds proudly announces the inaugural Lionel Hampton Tribute Concert Showcase. The event will take place in the Bomhard Theater of the Kentucky Center on Saturday October 7^th at 7:30 p.m. The concert will be a live-recording.

Dick Sisto, on vibraphone, is the artistic and music director who will lead a group of featured jazz artists who will pay tribute to jazz greats past and present. They include Barry Ries, trumpet; Bobby Broom, guitar; Bobby Floyd, keyboards; Jim Anderson, bass; Art Gore, drums and special guest Harry Skoler, clarinet (Berklee College of Music). These experienced artists have played with jazz greats such as Lionel Hampton, Sonny Rollins, Count Basie, Benny Golson, and George Benson.

Louisville native Lionel Hampton was born on April 20, 1908. He popularized the vibraphone and played with the Benny Goodman Quartet before becoming a successful bandleader. Hampton received honors from Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. He performed well into his 90s before passing away in 2002.

Mayor Greg Fischer and the city of Louisville have embraced this event and hope to honor this hometown jazz great and innovator with an official Lionel Hampton dedication day. The event will also feature a showcase of young percussion students on the vibraphone and drums. A music scholarship will be considered for one of the participating youth.

Tickets start at $30.00 and they are still available at the Kentucky Center Box Office. Proceeds from the event will benefit Lincoln Foundation’s signature Whitney M. YOUNG Scholars Program^®. During the concert, a representative from Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Kentucky will make a special announcement that will impact the youth in the scholars program.

Lincoln Foundation has empowered disadvantaged youth to overcome adversity through education since its inception by Berea College over 100 years ago. The mission of the organization is to provide educational enrichment programs that develop and support youth in overcoming barriers to achievement. Lincoln Foundation outcomes demonstrate that students can break the cycle of poverty in their families through higher education. Students are holistically developed in an educational culture that stresses academic achievement and graduation from college. BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND: STAGE PLAY BRINGS AWARENESS TO TWO MAJOR HEALTH ISSUES AND THE EFFECTS IT HAS ON PATIENTS AND THEIR CAREGIVERS

Lexington, KY— In the hit stage play, My War Wounds, playwright and visionary, Leslie Pryor highlights the warning signs, symptoms and struggles of individuals with brain tumors, as well as the struggles and symptoms of a disease many families know all too well—breast cancer. After so much open dialogue the stage play became a resource tool for some 1200 people.

There will be an encore presentation of My War Wounds on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at 6 p.m. at the Lyric Theatre & Cultural Arts Center, 300 E Third St, Lexington KY 40508. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. We are excited to announce that comedian Laronda Clay will be our show’s host and saxophonist Benny J will perform during the evening. There will be vendors, plenty of food, a photographer to capture special moments, door prizes and plenty of information about breast cancer for organizations on location in case our guests have any questions.

Headaches, nausea, blurred or double vision, dizziness, trouble walking all could be something minor or symptoms to something so much bigger. So, when 13-year-old Alijah Owens started experiencing migraines and falling down at school without warning, he knew something was wrong. Soon, his eyes turned red and glossy, his face became disfigured and his hearing declined.

Initially, doctors misdiagnosed it as an allergy or vertigo but unfortunately Alijah had a massive brain tumor. Parents at this point, normally have more questions than answers when they get the diagnosis. For Alijah and his family, it resulted in more than 30 hours of surgery, months of therapy and having to learn to walk all over again. He was literally in a fight—a war—for his life.

According to the American Brain Tumor Association, brain tumors are the most common form of tumors among children under the age of 25 and represent 20% of all childhood cancers. Many have no idea of these statistics until after the diagnosis is given.

My War Wounds, is a true testament of never knowing what a person is dealing with when they are not at school, church and/or work. Many suffer in silence and have no outlet to relieve their stress and anxiety which many times can be misdirected. This inspirational story of courage and fear, love and hate is sure to take audience members on an emotional roller coaster they’ll never forget. When a mother, who is facing her own share of health challenges, is confronted with a life-threatening sickness of her daughter, will she keep the faith or let her family be ripped to shreds?

The VIPP Report: The “Showdown” takes place on the basketball court bringing “All Stars” to the hardwood to support area youth and Hurricane Harvey victims

(Louisville, KY) It’s all about the bragging rights in the All-Star Showdown 2017 on Sunday, September 3^rd at Old Male High School Gym, 911 S. Brook Street (corner of Brook and Breckenridge). Tickets are $10 for adults and $3 for youth 12 and under.

At 3:00 p.m. there will be a championship league game. So, the East End Team of Louisville, Lou-Ville Champs will go up against the Buffalo All Star Pro Team from Lexington coached by 1978 NCAA Champion and Kentucky Wildcat James Lee. It’s the battle for bragging rights. During halftime fans, will get to enjoy a dunk contest. You need to be in attendance to see the unbelievable dunks that will be attempted.

You will get your money’s worth with this event. A second game has been added. It’s the All-Star Game featuring former NBA & NCAA champion for the Kentucky Wildcats Derek Anderson, former Louisville Cardinals stars BJ Flynn, Nate Johnson and Alvin Sims will participate in the game. We’ve also confirmed that two Louisville Metro Police Officers Joplin Johnson and Thomas Coleman will play in this game. Louisville native and NBA star D’Angelo Russell graciously sponsored the official All Star Showdown Nike uniforms for the 5pm game.

Two former University of Louisville athletes Tony Williams and Mario Urrutia along with their dynamic teams created this concept to give back to the youth in the community. Williams played 10 years in the European professional basketball league and works tirelessly to assist the youth in the community. After playing for the Cardinals, Urrutia played in the NFL and currently helps other youth seeking the same success by developing them at the Super Student Athletes, LIFE Center. They provide guidance both on and off the football field. Throughout the day, you will see youth be showcased in various ways so they can be exposed to positive figures in the community.

You will also get to see Kentucky State University’s Marching Band. They will travel from Frankfort to be a part of the game. There will be a step show during the HBCU halftime explosion.

This event is for the sharp shooters because there will be a Montgomery Chevrolet 3 Point Contest. Former Harlem Globetrotter, Dirt Bowl legend and Louisville native Gerald Gray will participate in Beat the Pro Challenge.

There will even be a $1,000 Lawyer for the City Half Court Long Shot Challenge sponsored by Attorney Brandon Lawrence.

This family friendly event will not only recognize the youth in the community but due to Hurricane Harvey, organizers felt the need to assist with aid by holding a moment of silence at the start of the game and introducing Derek Anderson’s AOK Foundation for hurricane relief fund and explain how you can help throughout the event. Organizers have family and friends affected and want to let them know they care.

The response has been overwhelming when it comes to giving back. All four of the urban radio outlets in the area have agreed to be a part of the event by hosting different hours throughout the day. B96, 93.1 The Beat, WLOU/104.7 and 107.9 The Beat in Lexington will all broadcast from the event. There will be on-site interviews with KySports.TV. They will also live stream the games. To keep the activities moving Mario Martin of “The Mario Show” will be the emcee for the day.

Members of the Aspire Academy, which features some of the top high school prospects in the country will be in attendance. Hoops for Christ Philip Morrison will do a dribble dance routine with youth on the court. With all this fun, you will get hungry so we have the 502 Café food truck serving food just outside the door.

A Celebration of Unity, Art, Culture, & History Across the African Diaspora

The 5^th Annual African Heritage Festival will be held in various locations around the city of Louisville Friday, August 25^th through Sunday August 27^th. The event celebrates unity, culture, art and history across the African Diaspora.

The festival is hosted by Bridge Kids International, the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage (KCAAH), the Kentucky Old School Sports Association (KOSSA), HoneyTree Publishing, and Moments to Remember.

The African Heritage Festival is organized by a dynamic team representing a variety of countries and backgrounds. The whole city is invited to this unifying event that will be fun, educational, and certainly full of flavor. Last year’s festival drew approximately 2000 participants, and with this year’s new additions, we only anticipate that the celebration will continue to grow.

Opening Ceremony — Friday, August 25th – Kentucky Center for African American Heritage:

Opening Ceremony will kick off the weekend with a reception and program honoring African heritage, culture, history and art.

Festival Day — Saturday, August 26th

The African Heritage Festival will be a joyous event for the whole family with great food, music, dance, sports, theater, fashion, cultural demonstrations, children’s activities, resources for healthy living and so much more. What a great way to honor African, African-American and Caribbean cultures in Louisville and add to the revitalization efforts in the historic Russell neighborhood. All activities are free and open to the public. Some highlights include:

8:00am: Soccer Tournament Begins – Champions Park, 2050 River Road soccer tournament held at Champions Park, organized by KOSSA, featuring 10 teams from at least 5 states with players representing 20 countries of origin
10:00am: Parade Begins – a parade of marching bands, dance teams, bicycle groups, community organizations and more down Muhammad Ali Blvd. starting at 9^th Street and ending at 18^th Street where the festival will take place in front of the KCAAH
10:00am – 12:00pm: the widely beloved Books & Breakfast!
11:00am: Festival activities begin and will feature live entertainment, “Under the Story Tree” storytelling fest, and other children’s activities. Food, merchandise and informational vendors from across the city and the surrounding region will be in attendance.
12:00pm: Basketball tournament begins – a street basketball tournament presented by KOSSA and the organizers of the Dirt Bowl
12:00pm – 5:00pm: A how-to fair with community members teaching useful and fun things
7:00pm: Festival ends

Sunday, August 27th – Invoke… Called by the Ancestors (performance begins 2:30 pm)

This year, we are excited to announce that a third day will be incorporated into the festival! Please come out on Sunday, August 27th for “Invoke … Called by the Ancestors” performed by Sankofa Dance Theater. The Baltimore based dance company presents world-class, authentic African art in the form of dance, music, and folkways for national and international audiences. Sankofa Dance Theater’s work is rooted in healing and bringing intercultural understanding to the global village while staying true to the definition of the word “Sankofa” — which means to learn from the past in an effort to build for the future. The show will begin promptly at 2:30pm and will feature a special appearance by spoken word artists Hannah Drake and Tytianna Wells smith –performing A Mother’s Tears. Tickets for Sunday’s are available on Eventbrite and at Better Days Records West (Lyles Mall). Proceeds will go towards the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage. The African Heritage Festival was founded in 2013 when Bridge Kids International approached KCAAH about hosting the event at the Center as a way to build relationships among and celebrate Louisville’s African Diaspora. In four years, the event has grown from a mostly indoor event to a street festival and has more than doubled in size. Bridge Kids continues to coordinate the overall planning, but the African Heritage Festival has truly become the pride of all of the presenting organizations, planning committee, participants and volunteers.

The Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, (KCAAH), presents the Sankofa Dance Theater on Sunday, August 27^th at 2:30pm at the center which is located at 1701 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd.

The theater group will perform Invoke … called by the Ancestors. The name of the group “Sankofa” means you need to learn about the past, so you can build for the future. The Baltimore based dance company presents world-class, authentic African art in the form of dance, music, and folkways for national and international audiences. The theater’s work is rooted in healing and bringing intercultural understanding to the global village while staying true to their mission.

There will also be a special performance by Hannah Drake and Tytianna Wells Smith. They will perform “A Mother’s Tears”.

The VIPP Report: Jazz fans can sit under the “twin spires” and listen to some great music this weekend

This weekend jazz will fill the air under the historic “twin spires” at Churchill Downs. The 2^nd Annual Derby City Jazz Festival will delight jazz enthusiast and novice alike because of the buffet of talent headed to the city.

This year’s lineup is stellar with some very familiar names in the jazz industry. Saxophonist and contemporary jazz artist Marion Meadows is on the schedule to perform Friday night. He’s worked with artists like The Temptations, Michael Bolton, the late Eartha Kitt and Brook Benton just to name a few.

Also, performing this weekend is Kayla Waters. She’s considered a smooth jazz artist whose a pianist and sings during her performances. She’s opened for artists like Patrice Rushen, Stevie Wonder and Maysa.

Maysa is on the Derby City Jazz Festival schedule. She will be in concert on Saturday. If you’ve never heard of the artist. She was originally with the British group Incognito. This jazz-influenced R & B singer has dynamic vocals and she’s one of the must see artists when attending the festival.

So, see just with the several artists I’ve mentioned all of them have a different vibe. You should find someone over the two days that you will simply love. So, go out and experience the flavor of the Derby City Jazz Festival. Gates will open at 2:00 pm. Entertainment begins on both days at 4:00 pm and will end around 12:00 am. The concert will be held in the Paddock Area on the Plaza Stage which organizers says creates the perfect back drop. Don’t forget to bring your own seating for the summer sun and then evening moonlight with fantastic music.

ANNUAL EVENING OF JAZZ

(Louisville, KY). The 22^nd Annual Evening of Jazz featuring the Ansyn Banks Quintet will be held on Friday, August 18, 2017 at the KCD Theater, 4100 Springdale Road. Proceeds from the event benefit the Whitney M. YOUNG Scholars Program^®. A pre-concert reception with hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar will begin at 5:30 p.m. The program and concert, which features the Ansyn Banks Quintet performing a tribute to jazz great Kenny Dorham, begins at 7:00 p.m.

As a jazz trumpeter, singer and composer, Kenny Dorham played with such jazz greats as Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Billy Eckstine and Mercer Ellington. He was best known for his album entitled Afro-Cuban which showcased his interest in combining Latin music with jazz.

Ansyn Banks, an associate professor of jazz trumpet at the University of Louisville School of Music, teaches jazz styles and analysis, jazz improvisation and directs the university’s jazz combo program. He has performed with jazz legends such as Dick Oatts, Harry Pickens, Chuck Marohnic, Hank Marr, Gene Walker and Melvin Rhyne as well as some of the biggest names in entertainment like the Mighty Dells, The Temptations, Aretha Franklin and the Four Tops.

Prior to the concert, Lincoln Foundation will present the prestigious Spirit of Excellence Award which is annually given to a local individual who exemplifies an active commitment to education, human/community service, and leadership. This year’s recipient is Cathe Dykstra, Chief Possibility Officer and President & CEO of Family Scholar House, for her role in “changing lives, families and communities through education”. Past recipients include Christina Lee Brown, Laura Douglas, Ed Hamilton, Mary Gwen Wheeler, Mayor Greg Fischer, Robert & Deborah Blair and Lonnie & the late Muhammad Ali.

Lincoln Foundation has empowered disadvantaged youth to overcome adversity through education since its inception by Berea College over 100 years ago. Lincoln Foundation believes that students can break the cycle of poverty in their families through higher education. The mission of the organization is to provide educational enrichment programs that develop and support youth in overcoming barriers to achievement. The signature Whitney M. YOUNG Scholars Program® annually serves approximately 460 students in grades 7-12 and over a six-year period prepares them for high school and college graduation. The college-prep program has demonstrated successful outcomes with Scholars earning over 361 undergraduate and graduate degrees since 2000. Today over 150 Scholars are enrolled at accredited colleges or universities.

FOOTBALL SEASON IS JUST A FEW WEEKS AWAY GET YOUR CHILD READY BY PARTICIPATING IN DEION BRANCH’S SKILLS AND DRILLS CAMP

(Louisville, KY) Former University of Louisville and two-time Super Bowl champ and SB XXXIX MVP Deion Branch returns to Louisville to host his 8th Annual Skills & Drills Football Camp. It will be on Saturday, July 8th at Baptist Health Performance, 12101 Sycamore Station Place. Registration begins at 8:00 am and the camp is from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.

(Louisville, KY) Legacies Unlimited and Ken Clay & Associates presents The Walnut Street Revue featuring Louisville native Vic Frierson. It’s A Song for You: A Tribute to the Life & Music of Luther Vandross. Frierson will celebrate the life and music of Luther Vandross. It will be held on Sunday, August 6^th at the Clifton Center, 2117 Payne Street. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. General admission tickets are $40 per person and if you would like to sit in the V.I.P. section on-stage it will be $45.

Faith-based leaders bring world renowned Gospel artist Kirk Franklin to West Louisville in hopes of spreading peace

(Louisville, KY) With so much going on in our community from violence to economic disparity, people are looking for a ray of hope and inspiration. On Saturday, May 20^th at 6:00 pm, GAB Productions and WLOU 104.7 FM present “An Evening with Kirk Franklin Live”.

Instead of being behind four walls, Franklin and the planning committee decided they wanted to take the message to streets by holding the concert in an open lot behind St. Stephen Church located at 1018 S. 15^th Street.

The theme for the concert: “Peace in the Streets”. Franklin, a multi-Grammy, Dove, and Stellar Award winner will motivate, inspire, and have you encouraged to be more and do more for yourself, family and community. That’s the mission for this concert.

We are also excited to have Louisville natives, Dove Award winner, Stellar and Grammy Award nominees Jay and The Team open for Franklin.

Well, TheSlice Charities of Louisville, the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage and PNC Bank proudly present TheSlice @KCAAH. TheSlice-Spice, Style & Soul on Saturday, April 29th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. This year’s theme: A Salute to Muhammad Ali: A Life of Inspiration. The event will be held at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, located in the heart of West Louisville at 1701 West Muhammad Ali Blvd named after the Greatest of All Time, Muhammad Ali.

For the first time, guests will get to see an exhibit of the late heavy weight champion. Ali died on June 3, 2016 and the world turned to Louisville, KY as his family, friends and fans sent him off in a champions way. Throughout the venue you will see a special collection. In the historical procession of Ali through the streets of Louisville the champ did pass KCAAH and the staff thought it was appropriate to have debut his photo exhibit at TheSlice.

“We are excited to have one of Ali’s family members as a special guest”, said Hosea Mitchell, KCAAH’s Chief Operating Officer. Ibn Ali, son of Rahmaan Ali and nephew of Muhammad. Ibn is excited and honored to attend TheSlice on behalf of his family. He’s started a program at the Jewish Community Center in Louisville around June. Additional details will provide in the coming weeks.

TheSlice is the only West Louisville event sanctioned by Kentucky Derby Festival. Chefs, caterers and restaurants from all over the city will give guests a sample of their cuisine. Guests walk around the venue and visit food stations and sample their signature dishes. Throughout the evening, guests will enjoy music provided by The Unlimited Band.

(Louisville, KY) The Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, (KCAAH) in collaboration with the African American Theatre Program at the University of Louisville and the Black Media Collaborative presents Welcome Home-A Journey Into Afro-Costa Rica as part of their 2017 GriotFilm series on Sunday, February 12^th at 3:00 pm at the KCAAH, 1701 West Muhammad Ali Blvd.

Filmmaker Brandon Hill documents his journey to discover peace and connection with the greater African Diaspora. Hill initially wanted to travel to Costa-Rico to film a wedding but after visiting and experiencing their rich culture, discovering a community of African descendants who had a very rich narrative he decided to document THEIR story which is really HIS story. It became more of a homecoming for Brandon. He decided that their story would provide an opportunity to understand the commonalities shared throughout the African Diaspora.

Welcome Home-A Journey Into Afro-Costa Rica will air at 3:00 pm followed by a question and answer session. There’s a $5.00 suggested donation to view the film and discussion.

Petrosino will also introduce poems from her latest book-in-progress. The discussion will be based on how researching her African American family’s multi-generational journey to literacy and how it’s shaped her artistic practice.

(Louisville, KY) The West Louisville Performing Arts Academy (WLPAA) d.b.a. West Louisville Boys and the West Louisville Girls Choirs, (WLBC/WLGC) invite you to attend their 17^th Annual Hope Awards Dinner Concert on Saturday, February 4^th at the University Club on U of L’s Belknap Campus. Time is 6:00 p.m.

This year’s honoree will be Ms. Rose Livingston, founder of “The Beech”, an After-School Tutorial Center located in the heart of the Beecher Terrace neighborhood. Ms. Livingston is a retired dedicated educator and administrator from Jefferson County Public Schools, (JCPS).

McDaniel Bluitt, Boys Choir Director says, “Ms. Livingston has worked tirelessly in the underprivileged communities of Louisville. Her labor of love has now attracted the attention of not only Louisville’s inner city neighborhoods, but has also garnered her the respect and recognition of the city of Louisville.” Her goal was to educate children of the community so they could be successful both in the classroom and in life. She is an unsung hero and on Saturday evening we just want to publicly say, “thank you.”

WLPAA will also appreciate Ralph Bonmon, Marshall Yancey and Sherlene Shanklin. It takes a village to keep our youth on the right track and such patrons as these make it easier.”

History

West Louisville Boys Choir began in November 1990. The choir is directed by McDaniel Bluitt, a retired vocal music teacher with twenty-eight (28) years of experience. He received his B. M. ED. from the University of Louisville School of Music and a Masters degree in Counseling from Western Kentucky University. The Boys Choir has performed throughout the commonwealth, for mayors, governors other national dignitaries. The Boys Choir’s first European Tour established international prominence in Paris, France and London, England. They received a superior rating during their first international music competition in the Bahamas. They were also awarded first place in the Music Festival at Sea.

The West Louisville Girls Choir made its debut in November 2002. The choir is directed by Mrs. Mamie Bluitt who received her B.M.ED. from the University of Louisville School of Music. The Girls Choir is also a performing choir. Some of its more notable performances are: Governor Patton’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration in Frankfort, Kentucky, ECHO, Women for Women Conference, Pre-Show for the Nutcracker and at Cincinnati’s National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. The Girls Choir has also toured New York, Las Vegas, Nevada and Los Angele, California. Their first Southwestern Tour to Texas was held in 2010.

The VIPP Report: Staged reading about a father’s grief over senseless violence and the murder of his young daughter

The GRIOT Theatre Series will also hold a community conversation immediately following the reading. It will take place on Friday, December 9^th at 7:00 p.m. at the KCAAH, 1701 West Muhammad Ali Blvd.

Zooman and the Sign is based on a teen in Philadelphia who literally terrorized his community. The play focuses on Zooman’s senseless murder of a 12-year old African American girl in front of her house with a street filled with witnesses all whom are afraid to talk. The grieving father posted a sign accusing the entire community of cowardice in the face of the ever escalating violence and the family’s attempts for justice.

The play was written over three decades ago but unfortunately many communities across the United States still face the “Zooman” mentality.

In an attempt to facilitate a community conversation about violence the persists in our community there will be a conversation where Dr. Eddie Wood of the LIFE Hope Center Inc. and Rashaad Abdur-Rahman of the Office for Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods will moderate a panel discussion after the reading of Zooman and the Sign.

The411 with Sherlene Shanklin: I haven’t seen Erykah Badu in Louisville since she attended the Grand Gala, a Kentucky Derby event several years ago. Now, she returns to perform. Initially, I reported that the neo-soul, hip-hop artist would be here January 28^th, now I’ve received word that the star will be in the studio working on a new album, which I’m sure her fans will be happy to hear.

Now, Badu along with actor and hip-hop artist Common and alternative hip-hop artist Bilal will join her on Saturday, April 8^th in Broadbent Arena at the Kentucky Expo Center.

Critics and music enthusiasts describe Badu as an experimental R & B artist. She takes a little of contemporary forms of soul and hip hop and blends it into her own sound with influences of jazz and funk. She recently hosted the Soul Train Awards where Louisville’s own Bryson Tiller was nominated for multiple awards.

Common, the poet, rapper and actor has an extensive background in the entertainment industry. His original stage name, Common Sense pretty much says it all. The conscious rapper is a Golden Globe, Academy Award and Grammy Award winning artist.

Bilal is an independent artist whose multi-talented as he juggles being a singer-songwriter, producer and musician. When he performs you will hear influences of jazz, soul, and some blues.

(Lexington, KY) Having just recently returned from Paris, France where images from his new Fountainfalls series were on exhibit, Kentucky artist, glassmaker, abstract painter and creative photographer Mark Lenn Johnson will showcase selected pieces from his entire body of work on December 3 at the Kore Art Gallery, located at 1860 Mellwood Ave, Bldg A-116 & 117 (inside Mellwood Arts & Entertainment Complex). A portion of each sale will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House.

Johnson says “What an unbelievable year it has been. I was blessed to have been invited and have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to show my work in New York and Paris, France and the feedback from those events has been overwhelming. My work is now on display in Helsinki, Finland thanks to Ava Galleria and I will be part of their show in Tokyo next year. And now, to return home to the honor of having my work on display at, and added to the permanent collection of, Eastern Kentucky University’s John Grant Crabbe Main Library is just really special. I can’t thank everyone enough for their support including the team at Kore Art Gallery.”

The VIPP Report: Film screening at KCAAH will highlight African descendants and their culture

(Louisville, KY) The Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, (KCAAH) in collaboration with the University of Louisville Theatre Program and the Black Media Collaborative, (BMC) presents African Heritage in Columbia: A film screening and discussion. It will take place on Sunday, November 20^th at KCAAH, 1701 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd. Admission is free but donations will be accepted.

Manuel Francisco Viveros, director and actor for the African Columbian Theater will be present for the screening and discussion.

The film documents the villagers of San Basillo de Palenque, who are descendants of enslaved African rebels, who preserved and maintained the culture of their African forebears in the music, dance and other aspects of their social lives.

We are also happy to announce that John Chenault, lecturer in the Pan African Studies Department at U of L will introduce Viveros and lead the discussion.

November 20^th is also known as Black Consciousness Day in Brazil. It’s also called Zumbi dos Palmares Day. It’s a symbol of enduring freedom and justice. We invite you to come out and pay homage to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The VIPP Report: A lecture series named in honor of a Louisville civil rights leader welcomes Angela Davis

The person who said “We have to talk about liberating minds as well as liberating society” will be a part of the 10^th annual Anne Braden Memorial Lecture Series at the University of Louisville . Angela Davis, one of the nation’s leading advocates for prison reform and abolition, gender equity, and racial and economic justice will be their guest. The social justice activist’s topic will be “Freedom is a Constant Struggle”.

The free event will be held on Tuesday, November 15^th in the Brown & Williamson Club at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium on Floyd Street. All seating is first come, first served basis for the 6:00 p.m. talk.

Davis is an accomplished author and lecturer with engagements all over the United States, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and South America. She’s published eight books including an anthology of her writings and speeches: “Freedom is a Constant Struggle: Ferguson, Palestine and the Foundations of a Movement.”

Following the talk, there will be a book signing.

This educator and a vocal activist in the Civil Rights Movement draws upon her own experiences in the early seventies as a person who spent eighteen months in jail and on trial, after being placed on the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted List.

You may remember that Davis was a visiting professor with the University of Louisville in 2002. She taught women’s and gender studies course.

Davis, a longtime friend of the late Anne and Carl Braden, wrote the foreword to the biography “Subversive Southerner: Anne Braden and the Struggle for Racial Justice in the Cold War South,” written by institute director and UofL professor Cate Fosl.

This lecture series and institute are named for the Bradens who were active in the civil rights movement in Louisville

The VIPP Report: Harlem’s Alive! 55+ & Kickin will be at the Louisville Palace

You might have seen them in the national spotlight for their way of being able to put their lives into a story. They represent those over 50 years of age. Now, Alive! 55+ & Kickin’ will be in Louisville.

For two days and three shows at the Louisville Palace, February 25^th and 26^th you can see the talented individuals who tell their story of overcoming adversity and living life being over 55 years old.

Alive! will leave you empowered after seeing the show. Previous attendees call it “soulful”, “emotional”, and “funny” all in one show causing guests to clap and sing along with the show. Everyone has problems but how you work through them is what makes a person special. There’s a lot of special people in this production.

The show was conceived by Vy Higginsen and Ken Wydro, the duo behind “Mama, I Want to Sing,” the longest running off-Broadway ever produced.

Theater producer Higginsen conceived the musical as a way to preserve a special part of American culture – African-American music, both gospel and secular music like soul and R&B. But what she also did was find a pool of untapped talent, men and women in what she calls their “second half of life” just waiting for their chance to shine: Theo, spent 40 years in prison because of drug habit; Deborah lost a son to cancer; and Matthew was illiterate most of his life and used alcohol to cover his low self-esteem.

Higginsen says “I’m excited to bring this unique production to Louisville. It’s give a perspective into lives of those who’ve worked for many years, cared for children, got into trouble but overcame the obstacles to live their “silver” years with no regrets.”

The production is a part of the Mama Foundation. Their mission is to present, preserve, and promote the history and fundamentals of gospel, jazz, rhythm and blues music for current and future generations.

The VIPP Report: Lexington native gets invited to showcase his artwork in France

(Lexington, KY) Glassmaker, abstract painter and creative photographer Mark Lenn Johnson will head to one of the greatest places in the world when it comes to art. Johnson has been invited by Ava Galleria to participate in their art fair with international exhibitions in Paris, France. Visitors from all over the world will get to see the Kentucky native’s creative photography October 21st through the 23rd at the Carrousel du Louvre, Paris where several images from Johnson’s Fountainfalls series will be on exhibit. Gallery owners as well as the general public may purchase them to add to their collections.

Mark’s love of color and glass allows his creative juices to bloom into beautiful works of art. His eye for detail is the inspiration behind his latest works as he invites you behind the lens to capture something as simple as a beautiful water drop and then encourages you to visualize the captured image which is free flowing, colorful, vibrant and soul stirring.

(Louisville, KY) Our country is experiencing a lot of unrest when it comes to violence in our communities. The Bridge Forum seeks solutions and best practices from top law enforcement professionals and will meet in Louisville, KY for their next scheduled forum. It will be held on Friday, October 28^th at the Hyatt Regency Downtown Louisville, 311 South 4^th Street from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Registration will begin at 7:30 am and the forum will start at 9:00 am for this invitation only event.

The Bridge Forum will be hosted by President Dr. Kevin W. Cosby of Simmons College, President/CEO David W. Tandy of the Kentucky Diversity Chamber of Commerce and Alan “AP” Powell of the Checkered Flag Run Foundation whose mission is “Investing in Education to Ensure Every Student & veteran Gets to Cross the Finish Line.”

Powell, one of the creators of The Bridge Forum is a Westend Louisville native and entrepreneur. He’s also the founder of the Checkered Flag Run Foundation which is headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona. He along with his executive team wanted to create a think tank to discuss best practices in community engagement which will be used as a foundation for increased understanding and improve relationships between law enforcement agencies and the communities they are supposed to protect and serve.

The Bridge Forum has become a model implemented by several cities where members of law enforcement, military, educators, political, business, civic and community leaders can come together and have open dialogue about the problems facing their inner-cities and the strain between law enforcement and the people that live in those communities. Powell says, “After having a conversation with childhood friend, Troy L. Gray, CFRF Board Member and Executive Director of PEAK Community Supports Inc. in Louisville, KY; I knew I had to bring this conversation back to the city I grew up in. To see my hometown make national news for violence was so disheartening. I knew I had to tap into my resources and take a stance by bridging the gap between community and law enforcement.”

Lamont Robinson, VP Supplier Diversity for Nielsen looks forward to working with the Bridge Forum. “I am excited to represent Nielsen at this very important event. It is the quintessential community experience connecting local elected officials with the stakeholders they represent and serve. My main focus is on the community and the small businesses that strengthen them. I come from an underserved community run by the same small businesses you can find in any disadvantaged community nationwide. Our small businesses can’t be successful if we destroy them in our anger; and my purpose is to educate people on the link between these very vital entities and to the economic growth of underserved communities whether local or national. As the voice of the people, at Nielsen we measure what consumers watch, buy and listen to; and through understanding these measurements it gives us the tools necessary to effectively communicate across a multitude of playing fields.”

Forum will consist of breakout sessions that seek solutions through six key topics:

Media Relations: The relationship between police, community and media.
Conflict Management: The time that an incident may occur through conflict.
Crisis Management: How to handle the community’s reaction to negative events.
Community Engagement: Responsibilities taken on by the community.
Community Relations: Police professionalism towards the community.
Multicultural Awareness: The racial biases between police and community.

As a result of the breakout sessions a book will be published. It will be used by colleges and universities to create community engagement and a course curriculum.

The VIPP Report: West Louisville Performing Arts Academy open enrollment period is now underway

(Louisville, KY) The West Louisville Performing Arts Academy (WLPAA) d.b.a. West Louisville Boys and West Louisville Girls Choirs, (WLBC/WLGC) are holding its annual Open Enrollment for new students, boys and girls, ages 8 to 18. Auditions will be held at the Artspace, 323 West Broadway, 4th floor next door to the Brown Theater. Open Enrollment ends September 30, 2016.

Members of the Boys & Girls Choirs rehearse twice a week, Mondays and Wednesdays, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. The WLPAA is more about just singing. They offer college scholarships, After School Tutorials, private Acoustic Guitar lessons and performance opportunities locally and statewide.

History

West Louisville Boys Choir began in November 1990. The choir is directed by McDaniel Bluitt, a retired vocal music teacher with twenty nine (29) years of experience. He received his B. M. ED. from the University Of Louisville School Of Music and a Masters in Counseling from Western Kentucky University. The Boys Choir has performed throughout the commonwealth, for mayors, governors other national dignitaries. The Boys Choir’s first European Tour established international prominence in Paris, France and London, England. They received a superior rating during their first international music competition in the Bahamas. They were also awarded first place in the Music Festival at Sea.

The West Louisville Girls Choir made its debut in November 2002. The choir is directed by Mrs. Mamie Bluitt who received her B.M.ED. from the University of Louisville School of Music. The Girls Choir is also a performing choir. Some of its more notable performances are: Governor Patton’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration in Frankfort, Kentucky, ECHO, Women for Women Conference and at Cincinnati’s National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Their first Southwestern Tour to Texas was held in 2010.

The VIPP Report: Griot Author Series welcomes “The Wire’s” Kia Corthorn

(Louisville, KY) On Sunday, August 28th at 3:00 p.m. the Griot Author Series at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, (KCAAH) in collaboration with the Black Media Collaborative presents Kia Corthorn. The author and playwright will read from The Castle Cross the Magnet Carter and will be in conversation with Nefertiti Burton, professor and chair of the Department of Theatre, University of Louisville.

The event is free to the community followed by a book signing. The publication is getting rave reviews. Civil rights activist Angela Davis says Corthorn’s novel is a riveting saga of two twentieth-century American families trapped inside the quotidian contradictions and compulsions of race, disability, and sexuality. Davis goes on to say “The untidiness of history is conveyed through experiences, dreams, and inevitable eruptions of violence, yet also unexpected patterns of escape and possible orbits of justice.”

Aukram Burton, Executive Director for KCAAH says “We are honored to have Kia Corthorn discussing her latest project but giving insight to future writers how she was able to garner experience and work on successful projects like HBO’s The Wire. The VIPP Report: It’s the Evening of Jazz hosted by the Lincoln Foundation

Lincoln Foundation invites you to attend one of the premiere jazz events in the city, the 21^st Annual Evening of Jazz, Friday, August 19^th at the KCD Theater, 4100 Springdale Road. The pre-concert reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a pre-concert reception followed by the program and benefit concert at 7:00 p.m. Derrick Rose, WHAS11 Television Anchor/Reporter, will be this year’s emcee.

The featured entertainment will be The Dick Sisto/Steve Allee Quartet with Jeremy Allen and Jason Tiemann performing original music from their recent CD entitled “Earth Tones”. The CD which has received rave reviews from Jazz Times and All About Jazz will be available for purchase with part of the proceeds benefiting the Whitney M. YOUNG Scholars Program®.

The annual fundraiser’s theme is “A Toast to Education”. The Spirit of Excellence Award will be presented to Ms. Diane Porter a community leader and retired educator. The last time Lauryn Hill performed in Louisville was at the Iroquois Amphitheater in July 2014. Now, the multi-platinum-selling artist and former member of the Fugees returns to the city. Hill will be at the Louisville Palace on Tuesday, September 13^th.

When you think of this artist you think almost immediately of her 1998 solo release The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. That album garnered 11 Grammy Award nominations in 1999 where she won five, including Album of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, Best R&B Song, and Best R&B Album.

Hill is staying busy. Even though she does not have newly released music for herself. She executive produced and recorded six songs for the 2015 release Nina Revisited: A Tribute to Nina Simone, including interpretations of “Feeling Good” and “Black Is the Color of My True Love’s Hair.”

MUHAMMAD ALI’S FUNERAL PROCESSIONAL

COMES BY THE KENTUCKY CENTER FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN HERITAGE

(Louisville, KY) On June 3^rd, Louisville native Muhammad Ali died at the age of 74 years of age in Phoenix, Arizona. The Greatest of All Time, (GOAT) had a champion’s sendoff in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. On Friday, June 10^th, streets throughout the city were blocked off so his 17-car processional could take his final journey to his resting place at Cave Hill Cemetery.

The processional led by family owned A.D. Porter and Sons Funeral Home owned by African-Americans has served the community for more than 100 years. They traveled down Old Walnut Street, known today as Muhammad Ali Blvd one last time. Stopping by landmarks and things important to Ali and his family.

When they passed 17^th and Muhammad Ali they approached the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage where Aukram Burton, Executive Director for KCAAH captured these breath-taking and historical photos as hundreds stood at that route to say goodbye to Ali.
