The VIPP Report: Kin Killin’ Kin Artist James Pate Visits Louisville

James Pate.png

(Louisville, KY) The Kentucky Center for African American Heritage is exhibiting James Pate’s KKK Series Kin Killin’ Kin Traveling Art Exhibition September 14 – November 12, 2018. The artist James Pate will give a gallery talk during the opening reception on Friday, September 21, 2018, 6:00 – 9:00 pm. Pate will discuss what motivated him to create Kin Killin’ Kin featuring scenes of young African-American men donned in Ku Klux Klan hoods committing acts of violence, creating an overt comparison between gang violence and the terrorism of the KKK. Pate says, “the numbers of Blacks killed by other Blacks since reconstruction far exceeds those lynched by “Whites”. Sadly, this pattern continued year after year, up to the present day”. The Center for Disease Control cites homicide as the leading cause of death for Black males between the age of 15 and 34.

Pate’s Kin Killin’ Kin is designed to shock and stop the viewer. Pate says “mainly, I want kids to pause and reflect”.

To close out the exhibition, a Youth Voices Against Violence Forum will held at the Heritage Center on Saturday, November 3, 2018, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. During this forum, District 15 Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton will facilitate a panel of youth from our community who will discuss the themes of gun violence and other forms of violence occurring in our society today. This panel of youth will examine the themes of gun violence within the context of public health, bystander action, healing through arts, and mobilizing for change through community dialogues.

Kin Killin’ Kin curator Willis Bing Davis says, “art holds the power to promote change”. For Davis, that’s partly because art is a language that everyone understands. “It is the universal connection of the art,” he said. “Art is one of the things that touches all of us.” Art is also a liberating language, he says. “Sometimes the art can say something that we can’t say in words.”

The Heritage Center views this exhibition as a powerful tool to promote community dialogue and community action by delving deeper into the themes of the exhibit, highlighting current efforts in violence prevention in Metro Louisville and cultivating the youth voice in the community. The Heritage Center recognizes the increase in gun violence and its impact on the communities it serves and presents Kin Killin’ Kin for the community to take action.

If you would like to setup an interview and/or tour the exhibit, contact Sherlene Shanklin with VIPP Communications at 502-295-0435 or by email info@vippcommunications.com.  We hope you are able to post on your calendars so your viewers and/or listeners get an opportunity to see the exhibit while in Louisville.

The VIPP Report: An act of kindness can help two JCPS students go on a “Back to School” shopping spree

AFM

Anticipation begins to grow as students prepare to head back to school on August 15th.  Some have anxiety because their parents have difficulties supporting their households.  Purchasing anything extra right now puts a strain on their expenses.  Do you know a Jefferson County Public School high school senior that continues to give back and considered a role model amongst their peers, family and friends even when they have no idea what the future holds for them and their family?

AFM Threads and the Stamina “AOK” Foundation team up to assist some students with their back to school needs.  We are looking for two lucky high school seniors who would like the opportunity to receive clothing for school and prom apparel valued at $1,000 for their act(s) of kindness.

Seniors need to submit a letter and/or video 2 minutes or less explaining how they give back through community service.  A committee will read the entries and determine the winners.  Submit entries to: afmforher@gmail.com.  The deadline is August 13, 2018 at 11:59 pm.

Winners of the contest will receive: two outfits for back to school, prom attire, lunch with Miss Kentucky and a mentor session with Stamina Foundation Founder Derek Anderson.

If you know a high school senior that needs a little support, please have them submit an essay on giving back.  We would also like for them also to choose a non-profit to volunteer with during the school year.

If you would like to have the organizers of the Back to School Initiative on your program and/or to have youth models showing viewers the latest trends please contact VIPP Communications for availability by calling 502.295.0435 or email us at  info@vippcommunications.com.

HIP HOP ARTISTS GIVING BACK BY PERFORMING IN LOUISVILLE TO ASSIST FAMILIES NEEDING ASSISTANCE WITH GETTING BACK TO SCHOOL SUPPLIES

(Louisville, KY) Back to school never sounded better when hip hop artist and Louisville native Dusty Leigh brings his vision to life.  He asked a few friends to travel to Louisville to help collect school supplies for youth.  With no hesitation the lineup was formed with some of the top names all performing on Dusty Leigh Day on Saturday, August 11th at Diamonds Pub, 630 Barrett Ave starting at 8:00 p.m.  Doors will open at 7:00 p.m.

The who’s who of hip-hop will perform. Here’s the lineup: Yung Joc, Bubba Sparxx, Murphy Lee, Nappy Roots and the Ying Yang Twins.

You won’t believe what the admission is for this packed lineup.  It’s FREE with a school supply donation.  If you don’t bring supplies, we are asking for a minimum donation of $10 so Leigh and his team of volunteers can go and purchase the items needed.

Dusty Leigh says “It’s an honor to have a day in my city but it was never all about me. It’s about giving back.  I travel all over the world and open for some of the biggest artists but there’s no place like home.  I see so many parents and guardians struggling to get the needed supplies for their child.  I just want to do my part and I’m excited to have such a great support system and friends in the industry willing to take time out of their busy schedules to perform.  This will be one of the top concerts of the summer. I hope you come out and support our efforts.”

So, come out and enjoy the show and help area youth at the same time. On August 11th, Leigh will announce what organization(s) he will be partnering with to make sure the supplies get in the right hands.

It’s definitely been a busy summer for rap artist 2 Chainz.  Just days after the concert in Louisville, he attended the Met Gala and while on the Red Carpet he took to his knee to let the world know that he would marry his wife Kesha all over again by proposing. CHEF DARNELL FERGUSON TAKING ON THE FOOD CHALLENGE ONE CITY AT A TIME

Darnell Superchef Ferguson(Louisville, KY) Darnell “Superchef” Ferguson learned that hunger doesn’t take a day off.  He had the opportunity to talk to the team of “Blessings in a Backpack” and they shared with him the staggering number of elementary children that need assistance when it comes to food, particularly on weekends within Jefferson County.

They serve 4,700 children at 43 schools in the Louisville Metro Area.  That’s impressive but that’s only 7% of the 64,000 who qualify.

Superchef is ready to take on the challenge and he will be calling on the community to help.  It takes approximately $100 to feed one child during a 38-week school year which does not include the summer break.

Darnell says “Can you imagine sitting at home on the weekend and not having enough food and you are counting down the time until you can get breakfast on Monday morning?  It’s hard and sad to imagine.  I know we as a community can make a difference in the lives of these children and I’m willing to lead the way.  We are not going to have a start date because these children needed food yesterday.”

The VIPP Report: Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church celebrates their 118th church anniversary

pexels-photo-208315.jpeg

As they extend their “olive” branch to the community to come be a part of their celebration

(Louisville, KY) Mt. Olive has been a vital and a stable entity in the Smoketown neighborhood.  On Sunday, February 25th, Rev. Alex C. Shanklin and its members will celebrate their 118th Church Anniversary.

From their humble beginnings, as the founders of the church wanted to worship together gathered in a small house to presently in 2018, Mt. Olive is located on several acres on East Kentucky Street. They built the church and family life center.  Then doing the impossible during difficult economic times, this congregation burned their mortgage when the loan was paid off.  Mt. Olive has proven to be a leader in the growth of the community.

So, on Sunday, February 25th, we invite you to celebrate the history of the church, its deep roots in the Smoketown community and their compassion to give back.  This year’s theme says it all, “Love One Another,” from the scripture, I John 4:20-21.

Rev. Samuel L. Whitlow Jr., Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church of Louisville will be the guest minister and will preach the 11:00 am service. Jackell Jackson and Natasha Rudolph will serve as the Master and Mistress of Ceremonies for the morning service.

We would love for you to come out as we set the example of loving one another. It’s not always about the gift of money, but of time and love.  You will feel welcomed as soon as you walk through the doors of our church.

Please post and/or announce Mount Olive’s 118th Church Anniversary.  If you would like to setup an interview with Rev. Shanklin and/or some of their members, please contact Sherlene Shanklin at VIPP Communications at info@vippcommunications.com. We will try and accommodate all your requests.

The VIPP Report: I.M.A.G.I.N.E. PEACE NOW at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage

KCAAH IPN

(Louisville, KY)  As a direct reaction to the violence overwhelming our communities, The Kentucky Center for African American Heritage in collaboration with ArtSeed presents I.M.A.G.I.N.E. PEACE NOW (Innovative Merger of Art and Guns to Inspire New Expressions of Peace Now).

Approximately 50 works from I.M.A.G.I.N.E. PEACE NOW, will be exhibited at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage in Louisville, Kentucky. The opening reception will be on Saturday, January 20, 2018 3-6 pm and will be on display until March 17, 2018 at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, 1701 West Muhammad Ali Blvd., Louisville, Kentucky 40203 (Free & Open to the Public).

I.M.A.G.I.N.E. Peace Now is organized by renowned metal smith artist Boris Bally, featuring decommissioned guns transformed into art objects by artists from the United States and five other countries. Bally brings together like-minded artists from around the world to make a powerful statement about gun violence in America and artistic expressions of peace.   C-Belles-3637 copy copy

I.M.A.G.I.N.E. PEACE NOW constructs a theoretical portrait of violence — calling on themes of greed, machismo, death, systematic oppression, irony, and beauty. Each artist’s interpretation of the gun as an object is insightful. The exhibitions will serve as an artistic catalyst for not only critical discussion, but ongoing action.

The bulk of the I.M.A.G.I.N.E. PEACE NOW exhibit will be shown at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage. In addition, ArtSeed will host a small exhibition at their gallery, 1931 East Spring Street, New Albany, Indiana, from January 12 thru March 16, 2018. The exhibition will include six works from the I.M.A.G.I.N.E. PEACE NOW exhibit in conjunction with the works of Louisville artist, Kenneth Hayden. Hayden, is a native Kentuckian whose work has been exhibited internationally and is included in public and private collections. The VIPP Report: Former UofL and Current Los Angeles Rams Star Jamon Brown Gives Back for the Holidays

502stepup

(Louisville, KY) NFL star Jamon Brown and his foundation (J. Brown Foundation) are teaming up with WHAS11 TV and the Homeless Coalition For The “#502StepUp” for the Holidays Fundraiser.

The goal of the telethon is to raise funds during the Holiday Season while bringing awareness to Youth and Young Adult Homelessness. It’s a trying time, especially during the winter months, for those that do not have a permanent place to call home.

The J. Brown Foundation is asking the City of Louisville to “Step Up” and be a part of the solution, and assist those who just need a little help during the holidays.  Currently, there is a spike in youth and young adult homelessness between the ages of 16-24 in Louisville, and Jamon is rolling up his sleeves to help shed light on this issue.

In Jefferson County alone, there’s over 800 new cases per year of youth that are considered homeless for various reasons. The statistics are staggering and agencies like the Homeless Coalition are overwhelmed with requests this time of year.

“The J. Brown Foundation is committed to assisting our community partners by investing time, energy and resources, while using our platform to bring awareness to issues such as Youth and Young Adult Homelessness. Even the smallest donations go a long way, and we need the city’s support to raise funds during the Holidays to propel the Homeless Coalition to their goal of eliminating Youth Homelessness by 2020,” says Jamon Brown.

On Wednesday, November 15th we are asking you to open your heart and donate during our telethon on WHAS11TV from 4 pm to 6:30 pm.

Even a small donation will go a long way.  Plus, you will never know who will be on the other line taking your pledge.

It’s the “502StepUp for the Holidays”.  Please call in from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm on Wednesday, November 15th to donate by calling 502-571-2345 or 1-866-885-1848.

From developing confidence to independence the Metro disability Coalition is an organization of individuals and agencies in Louisville, KY who assist those with disabilities a better quality of life.  The 501c(3) organization was established in 2001.

In March of each year, we host the Breaking Barriers Spotlight Awards.  The ceremony gives us a chance to say thank you people for their commitment, recognize educators, healthcare, service, community and youth organizations for their desire to enrich the lives of gifted and talented students.

In 2017, at the 17th annual awards ceremony former University of Louisville basketball star Marques Maybin was our keynote speaker.  He played for the Cardinals from 1997 to 2001.  In 2003, he was in a motorcycle accident in his hometown of Clarksville, TN.  Maybin was paralyzed from the waist down.  He passionately spoke to the audience about his setback but also how he was able to achieve and get back to his day to day routine while adjusting to being in a wheelchair. Now, he’s one of the top on-air radio personalities for ESPN Louisville.
