The VIPP Report: Free backpack and supply giveaway announced just in time for back to school

WAM!BacktoSchool

(Louisville, KY) Jefferson County Public Schools, (JCPS) are starting to prepare for the start of a new year.  It’s time to get students ready.  Do you need assistance with school supplies? Withers Academy of Music, (WAM!) will host a Back to School Drive on Saturday, August 12th in the 400 block of East Oak Street from 12:00pm to 4:00pm.

The back pack and school supply giveaway is free to area youth.  Come out and enjoy free food, a live DJ thanks to D. Mawl Vibes and interactive booths.  This year’s goal is to give away approximately 400 backpacks with supplies.

This will be a fun and safe environment for the family to enjoy.  WAM! organizers will block streets from Jackson to Preston so kids can just be kids, running around and having fun while parents work to make sure their child can compete with their peers by having the necessary supplies essential to be successful in the classroom.

Marcus Withers of WAM! says “We want to make sure that youth in our community start fresh, rejuvenated and prepared for the school year.  Without the proper supplies, some students fall behind very quickly, get discouraged and never seem to get caught up.  I believe if you give children a fish, you nourish them for a day.  You teach them to fish and you provide them with life skills that nourish them for life. On August 12th, the youth will begin to fish as we instill in them the importance of education, community pride and volunteerism.”

This event would not be possible without the support of the following:  Big Brothers Big Sisters, 400 Inc., D. Mawl Vibes, Nimbus, Savoy Fitness and the countless volunteers and supporters.  A special thank you to former University of Louisville Basketball star and current ESPN 93.9 on air personality Marques Maybin for serving as this year’s spokesman.

We want youth and their parents/guardians to walk away from our event feeling good about their backpacks and all of the supplies. If you would like to donate to WAM! please contact them by calling 502-414-4009.  To learn more about the Withers Academy of Music or how you can volunteer go to www.twame.org.

The VIPP Report: Louisville native Bryson Tiller adds a second show in his hometown

By Sherlene Shanklin

Someone mentioned to me yesterday that Louisville native Bryson Tiller will have two show in Louisville as part of his “Set It Off” tour.  I looked at that schedule multiple times and just didn’t see it.

Then in the last hour the Grammy-nominated artist announced three popup shows and there it was “LOUISVILLE”.

Tiller will start the popups tomorrow, June 1st with The Roxy in Los Angeles, CA. The second on will be June 3rd in New York at the Bowery Ballroom and then his last popup will be in his hometown of Louisville, KY.  He will be at the Mercury Ballroom on Wednesday, June 7th.

The Mercury Ballroom is an intimate venue where the patrons stand.  It holds around 900 people.

The show is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. This is what the Mercury Ballroom is saying about the concert:

The VIPP Report: Louisville native Bryson Tiller announces “Set It Off” tour

BrysonTiller-louisville-620x385-9ff5ad17fc

By Sherlene Shanklin

His “Trap Soul” album took the music industry by storm.  Now, Louisville native and Grammy nominated artist Bryson Tiller announces his “Set It Off” tour and of course his hometown is on the list.

Fans will see Bryson on Saturday, September 16 at the KFC Yum! Center as part of his North American tour.  Metro Boomin and R&B singer H.E.R. will open the show.

His new album “True to Self” is already getting rave reviews and maybe ranked of No. 1 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart. He surprised fans by releasing it on May 26th about a month earlier than its anticipated date.

I will monitor that ranking when it comes out this Sunday, June 4. This is only Bryson’s aka Pen Griffey’s second album.  The RCA artist has been singing and rapping since his high school days at Iroquois High and in 2014 his single “Don’t” became a hit thanks to the internet and his new found followers. Artists like Drake and Timbaland vibed on Tiller’s sound and that’s what got labels interested.

Now, he’s had hits like “Sorry Not Sorry”, “Exchange” and his current hit “Somethin Tells Me”.

Bryson is already collecting plenty of hardware for his trophy case. In 2016, he won Best new artist, Best R& B/Pop artist at the BET Awards. He also won Best New R & B artist at the iHeart Radio Music Awards this year.  His nominations have been adding up too from the Grammy Awards to the Billboard Music Awards.

The tour kicks off on June 23rd in Los Angeles in the Staple Center.

Tickets for the September 16th show in Louisville start at $39.50. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the concert will begin at 7:30 p.m.

The VIPP Report: The Acts of Kindness Gala will honor community leaders and area youth

AOKGala

(Louisville, KY) It’s the 2nd Annual Acts of Kindness (AOK) Gala.  It will be held on Saturday, July 15th at the Kentucky Fair & Expo Center at 8:00 pm.

The gala is a part of the Stamina Foundation, founded by NBA and NCAA champion Derek Anderson.  The foundation was created to empower youth and young adults with the resources and the life skills they need to follow their dreams.  Our first major project is to open the Stamina Academy.  The purpose of the academy is to teach skills to youth both in and out of the school system with the goal of bringing this generation back to life’s basic skills; manners, being respectful to others, self-confidence, self-motivation, and self-education.  The Stamina Foundation is excited to announce that their foundation that demonstrates doing the right thing and volunteerism will honor community leaders and area students for a second year.

The purpose of the AOK Gala is to introduce guest to the academy and how to get those doors open. Also, during the evening you will get to enjoy inspirational stories of this year’s honorees.  Those names will be released the week of the gala.

Derek Anderson says “I want to help the next generation develop mental training which is a vital life skill component.  My goal is to create more leaders and less followers.  I want them to be able to have the will power to standup for what’s right.  In turn, it becomes infectious and others will follow suit. Let’s SHOW them how GREAT they can become and to let them know that “Everything will be AOK”.

The black tie optional event will be July 15th with a “Meet & Greet” at 7:00 pm and Dinner at 8:00 pm.  Single tickets are $150 and couple tickets are $250. To purchase tickets and/or donate go to www.staminafd.com.

KirkFranklinFaith-based leaders bring world renowned Gospel artist Kirk Franklin to West Louisville in hopes of spreading peace

(Louisville, KY) With so much going on in our community from violence to economic disparity, people are looking for a ray of hope and inspiration.  On Saturday, May 20th at 6:00 pm, GAB Productions and WLOU 104.7 FM present “An Evening with Kirk Franklin Live”.

Instead of being behind four walls, Franklin and the planning committee decided they wanted to take the message to streets by holding the concert in an open lot behind St. Stephen Church located at 1018 S. 15th Street.

The theme for the concert: “Peace in the Streets”.  Franklin, a multi-Grammy, Dove, and Stellar Award winner will motivate, inspire, and have you encouraged to be more and do more for yourself, family and community.  That’s the mission for this concert.

We are also excited to have Louisville natives, Dove Award winner, Stellar and Grammy Award nominees Jay and The Team open for Franklin.

Bill Price, General Manager for WLOU, WLLV & 104.7FM says “We want to impact the entire community but right now we see a real need to assist the residents west of 9th Street.  This is the first time, that the number #1 Gospel artist in the world has agreed to perform in a major concert format.  He’s coming to support the Peace in the Streets initiative. This will be a treat that all ages, socio-economics, races and faiths can come together as one to promote peace.”

Tickets are still available but are going fast. You can purchase them at Better Days Records East & West.  For reserved seating please call 513-324-4025 or by email at gabproinc@aol.com.

The VIPP Report: Janet Jackson announces tonight her return to the stage

Janet

Janet Jackson official photo

By Sherlene Shanklin

She’s went on maturity leave and many thought she may not return.  There’s been hints all day from the multi-Grammy Award winning artist that something was brewing.  A video saying she would return but when?

Then at 10:20 pm tonight, an email pops into my inbox announcing the Janet Jackson 2017 State of the World Tour.  The 56-city tour will begin on Thursday, September 7th in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Louisville, KY is on that tour schedule.  Jackson will be at the KFC Yum! Center on Friday, December 1st.  Tickets go on sale Friday, May 5th, (Oaks Day).

Don’t forget if you previously purchased tickets for the Unbreakable Tour they will be honored for the news dates.  Janet cancelled the concert because she was expecting her first child and was told by doctors to rest.  She had that baby January 3rd of this year.

If you have a story idea, send it to me at thevippreport@vippcommunications.com.  You can follow me on Twitter @Sherlenemediapr and Instagram @Sherlenemediapro.  @thevippreport @vippcomm.

The first 40 Under 40 award recipient is only one of four African American General Managers in the state of Kentucky was passed the GM torch in July 2015 and has been excelling since that day.  As he climbed the leadership ladder, he continued to develop his support team.  Even with his busy schedule, Steve takes the time to teach his sales team the auto business.  By making them knowledgeable on the sales floor, it gives customers confidence in the sales team and their purchase.

Steve likes to stay above the curve by finding innovative sales tactics by using mediums like social media platforms.  He says “To be a leader, you need to find an employee’s strength and build from it.  Just like an athlete on a team. Each person has a particular position they play. They become a leader in the position but fellow teammates are there to assist to make sure the ball stays in play. That’s why I chose the Disney Approach developed by Walt Disney”.

When the perspective customer pulls into the lot, they are greeted. Instead of them looking for help, Steve’s team is there walking them through the process.

Mudd goes on to say “Customer service is vital because we want you to become a repeat customer.  How you feel when you drive your new car off the lot, is the same feeling you get when it’s time to start thinking about additional purchases.  They should be saying to themselves that they would return because their last experience was a good one.”

With the support of Four Roses Distillery, Louisville Convention Center and Bourbon Country as well as the many events and activities she participates in everyone loves to see the wonderful creation that she produces.  From initially starting with candy the business has grown into developing other products such as chocolate covered fruit, cheesecakes to chocolate covered popcorn.

The VIPP Report: Muhammad Ali’s legacy lives on with the next generation

Special by Sherlene Shanklin, WHAS11 Television, ABC, Louisville

Muhammad Ali would have been 75 years old on January 17th, but his influence lives on.  I’ve been in contact with a Louisville entrepreneur.  He’s had a busy week from making sure the pipes in his business were functional, a Stop the Violence Initiative held on Ali’s birthday to his wife having a baby.  Darnell “SuperChef” Ferguson spent the day with his wife Tatahda in an area hospital. Their bundle of joy arrived weighing in at  6 lbs. and 13 oz. and 19 inches long.

Did I mention his name, well its Legend Ali Ferguson.  You got it! Named after the “Greatest of All Time”.

The VIPP Report: Is Louisville back in the NBA conversation? Will they be on this map soon?

Special Report from Sherlene Shanklin with WHAS11 in Louisville (ABC Affiliate)

The411 with Sherlene Shanklin:  There’s a buzz once again that Louisville maybe in the running for a NBA team.  I’ve been following this story since the inception of the possibility.  Several years ago, it sounded far-fetched but today the tone sounds a little more positive.  I spoke to several people and they say it’s possible but all of the planets have to be aligned for it to happen.  The first concern is…where will they play?  Can the KFC Yum! Center accommodate both the Louisville Cardinals men and women’s basketball teams, special events and the NBA?

Can we afford the ticket prices on a regular basis to sustain the league.  The average ticket is $97.00 and could go into several hundred for premium seats.  There’s a total of 82 games, which will likely be somewhere around 41 home games in a NBA season plus the playoffs.

Louisville would get help from area cities that do not have a professional team, such as Cincinnati and Nashville.

So, is it possible?   I know that Junior Bridgeman and Grant Hill were working on a possible deal.  Is it Louisville? I guess we will have to see.

Give me your thoughts.  If you have a story idea, send it to The411@whas11.com.  You can follow me on Twitter @Sherlenemediapr and Instagram @Sherlenemediapro for real-time news and conversation on the following topic.

The VIPP Report: Staged reading about a father’s grief over senseless violence and the murder of his young daughter

zooman-staged-readings-2

FOLLOWED BY DISCUSSION WHO WORK CLOSELY WITH VICTIMS AND THEIR FAMILIES

(Louisville, KY) The Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, (KCAAH) in collaboration with the University of Louisville Theatre Program and the Black Media Collaborative, (BMC) presents Zooman and the Sign.

The GRIOT Theatre Series will also hold a community conversation immediately following the reading.  It will take place on Friday, December 9th at 7:00 p.m. at the KCAAH, 1701 West Muhammad Ali Blvd.

Zooman and the Sign is based on a teen in Philadelphia who literally terrorized his community.  The play focuses on Zooman’s senseless murder of a 12-year old African American girl in front of her house with a street filled with witnesses all whom are afraid to talk.  The grieving father posted a sign accusing the entire community of cowardice in the face of the ever escalating violence and the family’s attempts for justice.

The play was written over three decades ago but unfortunately many communities across the United States still face the “Zooman” mentality.

In an attempt to facilitate a community conversation about violence the persists in our community there will be a conversation where Dr. Eddie Wood of the LIFE Hope Center Inc. and Rashaad Abdur-Rahman of the Office for Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods will moderate a panel discussion after the reading of Zooman and the Sign.

The VIPP Report: Harlem’s Alive! 55+ & Kickin will be at the Louisville Palace

You might have seen them in the national spotlight for their way of being able to put their lives into a story.  They represent those over 50 years of age.  Now, Alive! 55+ & Kickin’ will be in Louisville.

For two days and three shows at the Louisville Palace, February 25th and 26th you can see the talented individuals who tell their story of overcoming adversity and living life being over 55 years old.  louisvillealive55

Alive! will leave you empowered after seeing the show. Previous attendees call it “soulful”, “emotional”, and “funny” all in one show causing guests to clap and sing along with the show. Everyone has problems but how you work through them is what makes a person special. There’s a lot of special people in this production.

The show was conceived by Vy Higginsen and Ken Wydro, the duo behind “Mama, I Want to Sing,” the longest running off-Broadway ever produced.

Theater producer Higginsen conceived the musical as a way to preserve a special part of American culture – African-American music, both gospel and secular music like soul and R&B. But what she also did was find a pool of untapped talent, men and women in what she calls their “second half of life” just waiting for their chance to shine: Theo, spent 40 years in prison because of drug habit; Deborah lost a son to cancer; and Matthew was illiterate most of his life and used alcohol to cover his low self-esteem.

Higginsen says “I’m excited to bring this unique production to Louisville. It’s give a perspective into lives of those who’ve worked for many years, cared for children, got into trouble but overcame the obstacles to live their “silver” years with no regrets.”

The production is a part of the Mama Foundation. Their mission is to present, preserve, and promote the history and fundamentals of gospel, jazz, rhythm and blues music for current and future generations.

Tickets go on sale this Friday, October 28th. Premium reserved seating is $55.00, First floor reserved $45 and Reserved balcony seating is $35.

You can purchase them at the Louisville Palace box office, (625 S. 4th Street)

This will be one of many events and/or programs we hope to bring to my hometown in the next year.”

(Louisville, KY) Our country is experiencing a lot of unrest when it comes to violence in our communities. The Bridge Forum seeks solutions and best practices from top law enforcement professionals and will meet in Louisville, KY for their next scheduled forum. It will be held on Friday, October 28th at the Hyatt Regency Downtown Louisville, 311 South 4th Street from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Registration will begin at 7:30 am and the forum will start at 9:00 am for this invitation only event.

The Bridge Forum will be hosted by President Dr. Kevin W. Cosby of Simmons College, President/CEO David W. Tandy of the Kentucky Diversity Chamber of Commerce and Alan “AP” Powell of the Checkered Flag Run Foundation whose mission is “Investing in Education to Ensure Every Student & veteran Gets to Cross the Finish Line.”

Powell, one of the creators of The Bridge Forum is a Westend Louisville native and entrepreneur. He’s also the founder of the Checkered Flag Run Foundation which is headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona. He along with his executive team wanted to create a think tank to discuss best practices in community engagement which will be used as a foundation for increased understanding and improve relationships between law enforcement agencies and the communities they are supposed to protect and serve.

The Bridge Forum has become a model implemented by several cities where members of law enforcement, military, educators, political, business, civic and community leaders can come together and have open dialogue about the problems facing their inner-cities and the strain between law enforcement and the people that live in those communities. Powell says, “After having a conversation with childhood friend, Troy L. Gray, CFRF Board Member and Executive Director of PEAK Community Supports Inc. in Louisville, KY; I knew I had to bring this conversation back to the city I grew up in. To see my hometown make national news for violence was so disheartening. I knew I had to tap into my resources and take a stance by bridging the gap between community and law enforcement.”

Lamont Robinson, VP Supplier Diversity for Nielsen looks forward to working with the Bridge Forum. “I am excited to represent Nielsen at this very important event. It is the quintessential community experience connecting local elected officials with the stakeholders they represent and serve. My main focus is on the community and the small businesses that strengthen them. I come from an underserved community run by the same small businesses you can find in any disadvantaged community nationwide. Our small businesses can’t be successful if we destroy them in our anger; and my purpose is to educate people on the link between these very vital entities and to the economic growth of underserved communities whether local or national. As the voice of the people, at Nielsen we measure what consumers watch, buy and listen to; and through understanding these measurements it gives us the tools necessary to effectively communicate across a multitude of playing fields.”

Forum will consist of breakout sessions that seek solutions through six key topics:

  • Media Relations: The relationship between police, community and media.
  • Conflict Management: The time that an incident may occur through conflict.
  • Crisis Management: How to handle the community’s reaction to negative events.
  • Community Engagement: Responsibilities taken on by the community.
  • Community Relations: Police professionalism towards the community.
  • Multicultural Awareness: The racial biases between police and community.

As a result of the breakout sessions a book will be published. It will be used by colleges and universities to create community engagement and a course curriculum.
