With an over-the-top couture fashion show led by a Project Runway designer and entertainment by a Grammy Award nominated artist the Grandstand Gala is a sure bet

(Louisville, KY) The Stamina Foundation is happy to announce their inaugural Grandstand Gala during Kentucky Derby weekend in Louisville, KY. As racing fans begin to arrive in the city, they will find out that this event on Thursday, April 30th will set the tone for style influencers trying to make a fashion statement during the Run for the Roses. The Grandstand Gala will take place at the Kentucky International Convention Center, (KICC) Ballroom at 7:00 p.m. located at 221 S. 4^th Street.

The lavish Derby event will have a red-carpet entrance as partygoers enjoy a runway style show featuring Project Runway’s Season 17 and Louisville native Frankie Lewis’, Frankie Lew Demi-Couture Collection. The designer will debut her summer collection with one of a kind pieces. We will give you an exclusive look periodically showing you the designer working and creating right up until the models hit the runway Derby week.

The singer/songwriter will take Derby fans through a love experience as we countdown Kentucky Derby 146. DJ Reggie Reg will provide entertainment throughout the evening.

During the gala, NBA champion and Louisville native Derek Anderson and his wife, entrepreneur and community leader Dr. Ashley Anderson will present this year’s Grandstand Gala 2020 award honorees. The AOK Inspiration Award will be presented to Allan Houston, former NBA all-star. The AOK Commitment to the Community Award will be presented to Nicole Hayden, founder of Friends of Nicole 50/50 Mentoring Collaborative, Inc.

Houston, a Louisville native played in the NBA for 12 seasons in which he played for the New York Knicks nine of those seasons. He also won a gold medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. The two-time NBA all-star shooting guard retired and currently serves as special assistant to the general manager for the Knicks and the general manager of the Westchester Knicks, the Knicks’ G League team. He’s not being honored for his accomplishments on the court but what he’s done off the court as a humanitarian through the Allan Houston Legacy Foundation and the Allan Houston Mentoring Initiative. Houston is married to Tamara Houston and they have seven children.

Hayden, a Louisville native and Miss Plus America 2014 works tirelessly to educate the community with the resources and information needed to build confidence and leadership skills essential for transitioning youth through their educational journey. Proceeds from the inaugural Grandstand Gala held on Thursday, April 30^th at the KICC benefit the programs of the Stamina Foundation. The foundation is a 501©3 organization with the mission to empower youth and young adults with the resources and life skills they need to follow their dreams.

The Stamina Foundation will pursue this mission with educational programming and events throughout the year, but the first major project will be the development of the Stamina Academy. The purpose of the Stamina Academy is to teach life skills to youth both in and out of the school system with the goal of bringing this generation back to life’s basic skills: manners, being respectful to others, self-confidence, self-motivation, and self-education.

Youth today are greatly influenced by their peers and social media. With scholarship as their main objective, the Chestnut Street Family YMCA Black Achievers program announces their keynote speaker for their 41^st celebration.

Miss USA 2016 DeShauna Barber will be the keynote speaker. The U.S. Army Reserve Captain will motivate young aspiring leaders to stay disciplined as they follow their dreams even when there’s a hardship not to stop trying to reach their goals.

Youth Achiever of the Year is Tajalia Tillman who attends DuPont Manual High School.

The 41^st YMCA Black Achievers Celebration will be held on Saturday, February 22^nd at the Galt House Hotel at 5:30pm. Tickets are $100 per person and they can be purchases and the Chestnut Street YMCA or by emailing ljohnson@ymcalouisville.org.

The YMCA Black Achievers Program includes events such as Spring Break College Tours, Community Service Projects, Leadership training, ACT workshops, college & career fairs plus much more.

I have the great honor of announcing the scholarships and institutions they plan to attend. For many families, this will be the first time they will hear the school and the amount of scholarship money their child will receive. It’s truly an exciting moment and I have to say that when I received the long list of names and the amount of money they will get in scholarships it’s super impressive and I can only imagine what their families will feel on Saturday.

The VIPP Report: Ball N’ Out is common for Rupp Arena but Wild N’ Out takes over in March

There’s some shows that you just can’t turn away from. I’m surfing the channels and I always have to stop on MTV’s Wild N’ Out. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable when it comes to pop culture but I literally learn something new every time I watch that show. It’s a rap and comedy battle on steroids, performances by top artists and the latest in trends. With its resurgence of the show Nick Cannon has decided to hit the road.

Save the date of Tuesday, March 24^th for Wild N’ Out in Lexington, KY. The show will be held in Rupp Arena.

Fans of the show can expect some standup as well as some music performances. Some of the cast members you will get to see on tour, DC Young Fly, Karious Miller, Emmanuel Hudson, Justina Valentine and DJ D-Wreck. The 27-city tour kicks off in March with the lineup changing up for each city along with some surprise guests.

The VIPP Report: Celebrating the Legacy of Black Louisville with entertainment memories from the past

(Louisville, KY) Music is healing to the soul and jazz is the essence of the heart and when you combine the two, you celebrate music and its legacy. Legacies Unlimited Inc. presents Jazz At The Top Hat Club featuring the jazz renderings of saxophonist Rick DeBow and The Palm Room Crew on Friday, January 24^th at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, (KCAAH) located at 1701 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd formerly known as Old Walnut Street at 7:30pm.

Although members of the group CRISIS have not played as a unit for a number of years, they will come together as The Palm Room Crew for this Jazz At The Top Hat event.

We invite you to The Top Hat Club, it’s the place to be and to be seen as we celebrate the legacy of Black Louisville. Tickets are $35 for general admission.

On Saturday, January 25th, it’s “Ladies Night Out” with The Walnut Street Revue. We take you back to the 1930’s, 40’s and 50s. Louisville legends song stylist Tanita Gaines and showstopper Sheryl Rouse will perform.

Ken Clay, founder of Legacies Unlimited says “Its two evenings full of great music and memories. We take you down memory lane as we remember our music legends from Louisville in particular Old Walnut with music powerhouses of today. We will also honor an entertainer on that Saturday with the Helen Humes Jazz Legend Award. We’ve only given the award to a handful of people over the years, but we feel the particular artist we will honor is so deserving. We invite you both evenings as we party Old Walnut Street style.”

The award is named in honor of Helen Humes. A jazz and blues singer from Louisville, KY who was a vocalist with Count Basie’s band. Enthusiasts and historians have documented that Humes was a vital voice in the swing-era. Helping them shape and define the sound of vocal swing music. The only child of a school teacher and her father was the first black attorney in the city. In 1937, Basie asked Humes to join his band, replacing Billie Holiday. The Louisville music icon recorded her last album in 1980 and died from cancer in 1981 at the age of 68 years old.

The VIPP Report: Handling the pandemic

Many were able to maintain some type of normal routine while some have had their lives and livelihood turned upside down.

Brain fogs, panic attacks and sleepless nights worrying about the well-being of family and friends have been draining.

How is your mental health? I have tried yoga and could not concentrate long enough to keep it going. I started reading but only read in spurts. I listen to music, all genres to help calm my soul. I found writing down my feelings and then crumbling it up and throwing it away helped instantly but have no long term benefits.

We are so bogged down with a ray of emotions and with no expiration date for this timeline on the pandemic and social unrest.

What have you’ve been doing in the past year to keep your sanity?

History

West Louisville Boys Choir began in November 1990. The choir is directed by McDaniel Bluitt, a retired vocal music teacher with twenty-nine (29) years of experience. He received his B. M. ED. from the University of Louisville School of Music and a Masters in Counseling from Western Kentucky University. The Boys Choir has performed throughout the commonwealth, for mayors, governors other national dignitaries. The Boys Choir’s first European Tour established international prominence in Paris, France and London, England. They received a superior rating during their first international music competition in the Bahamas. They were also awarded first place in the Music Festival at Sea.

The West Louisville Girls Choir made its debut in November 2002. The choir is directed by Mrs. Mamie Bluitt who received her B.M.ED. from the University of Louisville School of Music. The Girls Choir is also a performing choir. Some of its more notable performances are: Governor Patton’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration in Frankfort, Kentucky, ECHO, Women for Women Conference and at Cincinnati’s National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Their first Southwestern Tour to Texas was held in 2010.

Ross is one of the most successful recording artists of our time. The Motown legend got her start as the lead singer for the Supremes and then went on to have an unbelievable solo career with hits like “I’m Coming Out”, “Endless Love”,” “Touch Me in the Morning” just to name a handful of her mega hits.

The multi-Grammy Award winning performer will be backed up by a six-piece band during her show. Her last performance in Louisville was April 26, 2012.

The VIPP Report: The Seafood Lady will open a restaurant in NULU

Closing the Oak Street location to move to a larger venue to give seafood lovers the ultimate dining experience

(Louisville, KY) While many companies in the fourth quarter of the year, begin to wrap up business ties and prepare for 2020, The Seafood Lady is expanding due to an overwhelming increase in customer support. They are moving to NuLu, New Louisville.

Their 107 W. Oak Street restaurant will close and be relocated to 601 E. Jefferson Street, right in the heart of the East Market District. Seafood lovers have until Saturday November 23rd to visit the Oak Street location.

With the new location comes new features that customers will love and have requested that owners include on their menu. They will have a liquor, beer, daiquiri and wine bar. The 120-seat restaurant will have patio space, a private dining area and greeters who will seat patrons and take their orders giving them the full dining experience.

The Seafood Lady will have their specialty dishes on the menu, plus they are adding new healthy options to accommodate and cater to a new target audience so that everyone can find something on the menu they can enjoy.

On September 25^th at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage they hosted An Extraordinary Evening with Dr. Lonnie Bunch.

Dr. Bunch is the 14^th Secretary of the Smithsonian Institute. That consists of 19 museums, nine research centers and the National Zoo. He was previously the founding director of the National Museum of African American History.

The Heritage Center is located a 1701 W. Muhammad Ali Boulevard in Louisville, Ky.

The Rush Hour and Friday star has attended the Kentucky Derby and other events while in Louisville. He even took the stage to sing with the late Teena Marie at the Grand Gala, a Kentucky Derby Event but this time he will take the stage to do stand up. Save the date of Friday, March 6^th at the Louisville Palace.

Tickets are already on sale and they start at $39.50. Doors will open at 7:00 p.m. and the show begins at 8:00 p.m. Fans will not be allowed to take photos and/or record portions of the show. Tucker and his team just want you to sit back and just take in the comedy experience.

The author of The Book of Leon: Philosophy of a Fool, based on his character Leon where he’s loved by so many fans who watch the HBO comedy series “Curb Your Enthusiasm”. He actually got his start by appearing on Def Comedy Jam in 1995. He’s appeared on countless shows and programs from Saturday Night Live, ABC’s Fresh Off the Boat to the Real Husbands of Hollywood.

He will be at the Kentucky Center on Friday, October 25th in Bomhard Theater. His stand up act is for mature adults due to the language and theme of the show.

Louisville, KY, When you think of re-introduction you think about how you are going to embrace change. The Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, (Heritage Center) will turn a page to history by starting a new chapter with the launch of their Inaugural Quarterly Membership event that they are calling “An Extraordinary Evening” honoring Dr. Lonnie G. Bunch III, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution on Wednesday, September 25^th at the Heritage Center from 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

I’ve had several people ask me who is Dr. Bunch? He’s the 14th Secretary of the Smithsonian and the first African American to hold the position. He assumed the position on June 16, 2019 where he now oversees 19 museums, 21 libraries, the National Zoo, along with numerous research centers and several education units and centers.

His past position was the director of Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture.

The re-introduction event will hold it’s first bourbon tasting west of 9^th Street which will feature 12 top tier exclusive brands which they call the “Bourbon Alley”. Woodford Reserve’s Master Taster Katie Farley will be sharing her craft with the guests. At this event, they will also honor the first African American master distiller on record Uncle Nearest.

Did you know that Brough Brothers Distillery has a micro-distillery in West Louisville? They will also be apart of the event.

The VIPP Report: Hip hop artists help their young fans with school supplies by donating their time and talents

(Louisville, KY) This weekend music will fill the air for a great cause as area youth get the opportunity to fill their backpacks with school supplies thanks to some hip-hop artists. Last year, Dusty Leigh and his team went above and beyond their expectations when it came to donating school supplies to area youth.

On Saturday, August 10^th, they do it again thanks to last year’s response and need. Dusty Leigh Day welcomes Bubba Sparxx, Nappy Roots, Ritz, Sean Paul of the Young Bloodz and Haystak to The Bourbon Hall, 116 W. Jefferson Street. There will also be a special performance by Burden, Justin Time, Big Murph, Prime Suspects, Rocky Luciano, Japp Wayne and B Simm.

Doors open at 7:00 pm with the concert beginning at 8:00 pm. You must be over 18 years old to enter the event.

The concert is FREE with a school supply donation. If you don’t bring supplies, Leigh is asking for a minimum donation of $10. Proceeds will benefit Shirley’s Way. The non-profit organization assist families who have a loved one with cancer. It gives them one less worry as they care for their loved one.

Now Let’s Get Fit Foundation teams with Rajon Rondo Foundation, Kroger and Norton’s for Health and Wellness Day and Back to School Giveaways

Louisville (August 1, 2019) It’s the “Countdown to Classes” as many families shift gears to prepare their school-age children for the upcoming school year. The Now Let’s Get Fit Foundation has teamed with Kroger, and the Rajon Rondo Foundation for the Back to School giveaways Health and Wellness Day.

There will be two days will of fun, fitness inspired activities and free school supplies. We invite the Portland community to participate in the kick off scheduled for Saturday August 10^th with Norton’s Unity Jam at Molly Leonard Portland Community Center located at 640 North 27^th Street, Louisville. The Unity Jam is from 10-3p will consist of over 22 vendors and will giveaway over 1,000 free back packs and school supplies.

Then we head to West Louisville on Sunday August 11^th. We will be at Kroger at 2710 W. Broadway, Louisville from 3-6p. The event will giveaway over 200 backpacks and school supplies and include Zumba, boot camp, health screenings, dental consultation, kids bounce house, coloring stations and much more.

The Let’s Get Fit Foundation has a mission to combat obesity and instill Health and Wellness through Fitness and Nutrition. Each event is family friendly, Free to the public and includes fitness classes, nutrition stations, health screenings (for obesity related illness), kid zone activities and giveaways. along with other current and former local athletes in attendance and participating.

The VIPP Report: The Green House Family Resource Center plants a new seed of hope on growing, supporting and sustaining families

Grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at their new headquarters just a block away from courts system

(Louisville, KY) So many have expressed their concern that they have to travel all over the city to handle their social service needs. We introduce to the community, The Green House. The family resource center provides supervised visitation and facilitated exchanges, individual, co-parenting and group therapy, and psychiatric services all under one roof for the convenience of their clients.

On Friday, August 9^th at 717 W. Market Street, Suite 1 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm city officials, community leaders, clients and prospective clients will tour the facility and interact with staff. During the open house, a ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 4:00 pm.

The Green House’s founder Jessica Green understands and is appreciative of the one stop shop convenience. Green, a family law practitioner, healthy family advocate and adoptive mother of three children says “In honor and loving memory of her parents, James and Dr. Judith Green, who adopted 11 children, and fostered over 100 children during their lifetimes, The Green House, was birthed, furthering their legacy of creating a better community, one family and one child at a time. I too understand the importance as a mother the difficulty that many families have in going to multiple service providers to make sure that their family’s needs are met in a timely fashion. Remembering Music Icon and Louisville born Lionel Hampton with a concert benefiting Lincoln Foundation’s Whitney M. YOUNG Scholars Program®

(Louisville, KY) On Friday, August 23^rd at the Kentucky Country Day, (KCD) Lincoln Foundation, in partnership with Dick Sisto, Ken Clay, and Owsley Brown III, presents the 3^rd annual Lionel Hampton Jazz Project. Talented local artists will perform in honor of jazz great Lionel Hampton. The evening starts with a pre-concert reception at 5:30 p.m. followed by the concert at 7:00 p.m.

Proceeds from the event benefit Lincoln Foundation’s signature Whitney M. YOUNG Scholars Program®. The purpose of the college prep program is to empower deserving youth to achieve successful graduation from high school and college. Scholars have earned over 440 post secondary degrees since 2000. The mission of Lincoln Foundation is to provide educational enrichment programs that develop and support youth in overcoming barriers to achievement.

The Lionel Hampton Jazz Project recognizes the contributions of Hampton and the influence he still holds in the entertainment industry. Hampton was born on April 20, 1908 in Louisville, Kentucky. When his name is mentioned, fans and fellow musicians reference Hampton as an innovator, vibraphonist, showman and a major contributor to the world of jazz. The Jamey Aebersold Quartet featuring Gabe Evens (piano), Tyrone Wheeler (bass) and Jonathan Higgins (drums) will open the evening. Dick Sisto’s Vibraganic Trio featuring Kendall Carter (organ), Mike Hyman (drums) and Marlin McKay (flugelhorn) will round out the performances in tribute to Hampton. Sisto serves as the artistic and musical director for the event.

During the course of the evening, Lincoln Foundation will also present the prestigious Spirit of Excellence Award. The award is given annually to individual(s) who exemplifies an active commitment to education, human/community service, and leadership. The 2019 recipient is Dr. F. Bruce Williams of Bates Memorial Baptist Church. The pastor, of one of the largest congregations in the city, works tirelessly in the church and community as a great humanitarian. Past recipients include Steve and Amy Trager, Christina Lee Brown, Laura Douglas, Ed Hamilton, Mary Gwen Wheeler, Mayor Greg Fischer, Robert & Deborah Blair and Lonnie & the late Muhammad Ali.

Here’s some of the events I profiled in the inaugural show:

*It’s Bring It Live, The Dance Battle. The show takes place on Monday, July 22^nd at 7:30 p.m.

*The Juneteenth Jubilee at Waterfront Park had to be rescheduled due to rain. So they moved it to Sunday, July 28^th. The new date signifies the adoption of the 14^th amendment to the U-S constitution was certified. The amendment granted citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the United States which included slaves.

*Boys 2 Men will be at the Indiana State Fair on Wednesday, August 14^th.

*The Kentucky State Fair announces Sheila E and the GAP Experience on Friday, August 16^th. The concert is free with paid gate admission. The KY State Fair runs August 15^th through the 25^th.

*The NAACP Hardin County Branch will host their 28^th Annual Freedom Fund Banquet on Saturday, September 21^st. Their special guest speaker will be Roland Martin.

I had the wonderful opportunity to sit down with actor Kendrick Cross not once but twice in the past year talking about his career but tonight all eyes will be on the Louisville native as the Will Packer drama series Ambitions debuts tonight on the OWN Network.

Kendrick made a special visit to Louisville a few weeks ago to surprise his mother for Mother’s Day. He sat down with me and told me a little about the show. I’ve also been in contact with the actor this evening and you can tell he’s excited about fans getting an opportunity to see the show. He told me to make sure I was watching. I hope you tune in to watch as well and tell me what you think.

Here’s a link about Cross’ character and just a few hints of what you can expect when you watch the series co-starring Robin Givens, Essence Atkins and Brian White.

Also, did you know that Givens has a connection to Kentucky as well? Her parents are from the Lexington area and her uncle is the former University of Kentucky basketball legend Jack “Goose” Givens.

Juneteenth Family Fun Day will take place this weekend just before Juneteenth, the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States.

The Juneteenth Family Fun Day is where community is invited to come and explore the solar system in UofL’s Rauch Portable Planetarium, participate in puppet-making workshop with puppet master Troy Johnson, and Nana Yaa Asantewaa will perform her “Weaving Webs of Wisdom” in her storytelling circle. This year, they will feature Maker13 and the Maker Mobile. There will also be other fun things for children to enjoy from face painting, snapping it up at the photo booth, Planet Mogul to a bouncy for youth to enjoy. In addition, you can get your competitive spirit on with cards, checkers, chess, cornhole and more!

The Juneteenth Family Fun Day is FREE and open to the public.

Two young ladies crowned in Louisville will represent the Commonwealth of Kentucky for the next year

(Louisville, KY) On Saturday, June 8^th at the Brown Theatre in Louisville Miss Kentucky and Miss Kentucky’s Outstanding Teen announced who would represent Kentucky in the Miss America and Miss America’s Outstanding Teen competitions.

Lexington native Alex Francke was crowned Miss Kentucky Saturday night in Louisville. She will represent the Commonwealth of Kentucky at the Miss America competition. The official dates will be announced by the Miss America officials in the coming days.

Landry Feldmeier was crowned Miss Kentucky’s Outstanding Teen. She will present Kentucky at the 2019 MAOTeen Competition in Orlando, Florida on July 23, 24, 25 & 27^th at the Linda Chapin Theatre in the Orange County Convention Center.

The Miss Kentucky and Miss Kentucky’s Outstanding Teen programs empower young women across Kentucky through pageantry. The participants develop leadership skills and confidence as they work to achieve their biggest goals in life. The Miss Kentucky Scholarship Organization continues to develop role models for communities not only in Kentucky, but the world.

Dr. Ashley D. Anderson, Executive Director for the competition and President of the Miss Kentucky board says “We had an outstanding week from the “Kickoff to the Crown” where the community met the participants during an event at Fourth Street Live, to the crowning of the two ladies who will represent Kentucky for the next year. Our judges had a very difficult task, but they chose two great young women that Kentucky will be proud of. We have no doubt that on the national stage these two will make us proud.”

The WLPAA’s Summer Music Camp will convene:

Time: 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.

Throughout the Summer Music Institute, June 11-15, 2019, the WLPAA’s Summer Music Camp, the students will be engaged in group rehearsals, sectionals, vocal techniques, etiquette training, choir decorum, and preparing new music for our September College Tour to Campbellsville and our Annual Hope Awards Christmas Dinner Concert. WLPAA will also have guest speakers. On Tuesday Mr. Manfred Reid, the WLPAA Board Chairman, will be the guest speaker. He will share his amazing journey to South Africa.

On Thursday June 13, 2019 the Day Camp will turn into a residence Camp at the downtown Hyatt Regency Hotel. Here the children will receive etiquette training, a prelude to their Closing Ceremony, a formal dinner at the hotel’s Spire restaurant. The students will check out on Saturday, June 15, 2019.

The VIPP Report: Hip-hop legends Wu-Tang Clan adds Louisville to their 36 Chambers 25th Anniversary Tour

Since the 1970s, hip-hop was destined to become a force to be reckoned with. Slick lyrics meshed with edgy beats kept many emcees constantly evolving their craft.

Twenty-five years ago, a group of individuals from New York translated their street life to gritty lyrics, which many recognized as the harder side of the craft. They blended it with martial arts terminology while giving it a unique mythology known today as hardcore hip-hop.

The members of the Wu-Tang Clan will hit the road to celebrate their silver anniversary of their 1993 debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers).

All nine members – RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa and Cappadonna are headed to Louisville for their “36^th Chambers 25^th Anniversary Tour on Friday, October 18 and the new Old Forester’s Paristown Hall at 8 p.m.

Wu-Tang is regarded as one of the most influential hip-hop groups of all time with conscious albums like Wu-Tang Forever, A Better Tomorrow, and The W just to name a few of their studio albums. Some of the singles you might hear at the concert is Can it Be All So Simple, Method Man, Protect Ya Neck, Triumph and The Heart Gently Weeps.

The group has 7 gold and platinum studio albums to their credit. Selling more than 40 million albums.

The Kentucky Center for African American Heritage announce plans to develop a Media Arts Center named to honor the Legendary Colonel Charles Young

The Kentucky Center for African American Heritage (Heritage Center) is embarking on the expansion of a new Media Arts Center in a vacant 14,000 square foot wing on the campus. The proposed media arts center will be a state-of-the-art facility serving as the communication arm of one of the primary heritage centers in the state of Kentucky. The Media Arts Center will house a 40′ x 50′ “black-box” with a maximum seating capacity of 200, providing a unique and versatile space where artists of all disciplines showcase their creative work. The center’s layout will also include a lower and upper level. The lower level will include a dressing room with sink and toilets, green rooms, options for loading in and out, public restrooms, office and storage spaces. The upper level will include editing suites, sound booths, meeting rooms and access to the control room and lighting grid over-looking the “black-box” theatre. This venue will offer local artist and media producers a platform to produce video, theatre, music, dance, literary, public lectures, community forums and more.

The new Media Arts Center will offer a professional learning environment where media and the arts are used to promote and preserve Kentucky’s African American heritage and the shared heritage with the African Diaspora by hosting and producing programs, performances, exhibits, and a repository of video programs that will be broadcasted and/or distributed throughout Kentucky and the nation. The fund-raising goal for the project is 3.5 million dollars.

To initiate this capital campaign, the Heritage Center has retained the services of Charles Blatcher III, as the Project Fundraising Director for the construction and development of the new Colonel Charles Young Media Arts Center located on the 68,000 square foot campus in Louisville, Kentucky.

Mr. Blatcher brings a wealth of experience working as a principal organizer for the National Coalition of Black Veteran Organizations (NCOBVO). The coalition came together in unity of purpose to promote a greater understanding of the important role Black service men and service women perform in the defense of the nation. As chairman, Mr. Blatcher has led the coalition as the chief advocate for Black Military History and Colonel Charles Young. Under his leadership, the call for the posthumous honorary promotion for Colonel Charles Young to the rank of Brigadier General has gained prominence. He is not a stranger to Kentucky. He has played a major role in promoting educational tourism in the Kentucky/Ohio region. The Coalition dubbed the route connecting the Colonel’s birth cabin in Mays Lick, Kentucky to the national monument and archives in Wilberforce, Ohio as “the Colonel Charles Young Corridor.” We have seen some things move in a positive direction under his leadership. We look forward to the expertise and dedication he brings to the Media project. Mr. Blatcher recounts why naming the Media Arts Center in honor of Colonel Charles Young:

I welcome the opportunity to be a part of developing the Media Arts Center. Especially in the name of the legendary Colonel Charles Young. It’s an honor he deserves. In his period of history, he was more than an outstanding Soldier, he was a great communicator as a visual artist, musician, and poet, who spoke several languages. Colonel Young stood with

intellectuals of the times, such as W.E.B. DuBois, Booker T. Washington, and poet, novelist, and playwright Paul Laurence Dunbar who were among his close friends.

Colonel Young has a presence in African-American art and literature. One of the most notable instances of this is Countée Cullen’s 1925 poem “In Memory of Colonel Charles Young.” Another case of Young’s legacy in literature is from his close friend, W.E.B. Du Bois, who spoke at Young’s eulogy. DuBois claimed that “The life of Charles Young was a triumph of tragedy.” Charles Young is also represented in paintings and other art. Notably, a painting by J.W. Shannon titled “Portrait of Cadet Charles Young,” which currently belongs to The National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center in Wilberforce, Ohio.

He was a creative man who left behind a treasure of musical scores, poetry, and writings. The thought of him one day having his name above a Media Arts Center would have pleased him. What is pleasing for me is to think one day some of his work may be presented in a theater in a building named in his honor. I welcome being a part of making it happen. I am optimistic in the pride this effort will bring to the Community, City of Louisville and the State of Kentucky.

KCAAH is working in tandem with the Black Media Collaborative (BMC). BMC is a network of media professionals including directors, producers, writers and specialist working in the film, television, radio, animation, theatre, literature, journalism and Internet industries. BMC is dedicated to developing media literacy and skilled people in the production of media to provide significant economic, employment and cultural benefits in our community. BMC will provide the human resource capacity to develop an onsite media production facility which will be dedicated to radio, film, video and theatre productions, which will provide both training and performing venue.

The center will also collaborate with the African American Theatre Program (AATP) at the University of Louisville. AATP produces theatrical productions about Black life in Kentucky and throughout the African Diaspora. Founded in 1993, the African American Theatre Program is committed to staging works by new and established African American dramatists, developing a broad audience for African American theatre, and offering an in-depth curriculum that focuses on the theory and craft of acting, directing, and designing for Black Theatre.

Louisville/Lexington (May 7, 2019) Former NFL Quarterback and University of Kentucky Hall of Famer, Jared Lorenzen has teamed with the Now Let’s Get Fit Foundation, Kroger and the Rajon Rondo Foundation for the 2019 Kentucky Health and Wellness Tour.

The tour will kick off Saturday May 18 at Kroger locations in Louisville at 12501 Shelbyville Rd, Louisville Middletown store.

The next day Sunday May 19 will be in Lexington Kroger at 3101 Richmond Rd location.

Both events are from noon-4:00 pm.

Let’s Get Fit Foundation’s mission is to combat obesity and instill Health and Wellness through Fitness and Nutrition. NOW, AN OAKS DAY BRUNCH WILL DO A TRIBUTE TO THE MEGASTAR THAT MADE THE SONG SO FAMOUS

(Louisville, KY) Louisville Central Community Center, (LCCC) in collaboration with VIPP Communications announces their second annual Kentucky Derby event. On Friday, May 3^rd at 11 am at Old Walnut Street, 1300 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd, it’s the Oaks Day Derby Brunch. This year’s tribute will take you through the music catalog of Gary, Indiana native and pop megastar Michael Jackson.

The Derby Brunch hosted by Sherlene Shanklin is from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm. Some of Louisville’s top artists will perform some of the King of Pop’s 13 singles that hit number one on the charts. Sheryl Rouse, Jason Clayborn and Jon-John Johnson will perform some of Jackson’s memorable and greatest hits. The Youth Repertory Theater Troupe will showcase their talents after LCCC’s leadership and performing arts department prepared a curriculum giving the youth a history and music lesson on the humble beginnings of Jackson in Indiana living in a two-bedroom home with seven brothers and sisters at the time along with his parents practicing night and day to make the Jackson 5 a household name. Motown Records signed the group and the rest was history for Michael and his family.

Celine Dion announces her Courage World Tour. It will kick off in the fall of this year. The multiple award-winning artist made the announcement to a packed house of fans during a special live event at the Theatre at the Ace Hotel in Los Angeles. This will be her first U.S. tour in over 10 years.

The tour will kick-off September 18 in Quebec City and will make stops in over 50 cities including Louisville, Montreal, Chicago, Toronto, Boston, Miami, Dallas, Philadelphia, Brooklyn, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Vancouver, and more.

The VIPP Report: Rap pioneer re-releases his 1988 album and will perform on Strahan & Sara with a Louisville native backing him up

Make sure you DVR Strahan and Sara on Wednesday, March 20^th. Hip-hop pioneer Slick Rick will be on the show. You know that I’m always looking for a connection to the Bluegrass state and of course you know I found one! When you see Slick Rick performing I want to draw your attention to the man on the turntables. That’s Louisville native and Dwight “DJ Kaos” Chatman. He’s been Rick’s DJ for many years. Kaos has been all over the world with this legend of hip hop.

I have been in contact with ABC and they confirm the performance on the show. I asked, “is the artist releasing new music?” He’s actually celebrating the re-release of his debut album The Great Adventures of Slick Rick some 30 years later. The album was originally released on November 1, 1988. Still known today as one of the best rap albums by Source Magazine. In 2008, VH1 ranked the single “Children’s Story” a part of their 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop.

The album consisted of 12 songs, 49 minutes in length. You may remember some of the songs on this album. “Children’s Story”, “Teenage Love” and “Hey Young World”. The album was produced by some of the biggest names in hip hop. Jason Mizell better known as Jam Master Jay, Hank Shocklee, Ricky Walters and Rick Rubin.

The VIPP Report: Being nominated for Most Admired Woman by Today’s Woman Magazine

When I was contacted by Today’s Woman Magazine I had mixed emotions. – shocked to even be nominated even though no one knows anything about me.

People have no idea that I’ve worked in the media for almost 27 years.

When teachers told my graduating class that we would likely have to start at a smaller market to get your experience and then work your way back to your hometown. I beat those odds and jumped straight to my hometown of Louisville. I was hired part-time as an associate director. Working crazy hours, weekends and holidays. All while I worked in a new healthcare division full time and attending graduate school obtaining two master’s degrees.

I’ve worked in just about every position behind the scenes. Receiving several award nominations for floor directing and my camera work for some of the biggest news events in Louisville. I had the opportunity to first produce/coordinate the very first forum where community leaders said some 20 years ago that Louisville was ready for a professional team. Many of the same believers in that idea are still believing in the vision today and its moving in the right direction. I believe there will be a farm team that’s affiliated with an NBA team who will make Louisville their home first. Those players, when developed, will be called up to team.

After proving I could produce I went from production to the newsroom where I had the opportunity to write and produce some of the biggest stories of our lifetime like 9-11. Then I was recruited away in 2003 to WHAS11. I started off as a producer but later moved to the assignment desk.

I had an opportunity to start one of the first webcasts in the area about entertainment and community news that you did not see on the air. I took the challenge upon myself to help promote people and events. My original concept was to find national figures throughout the world that had Kentucky ties. That helped me create that niche in the market and The411 with Sherlene Shanklin was born.

In 2018, the Society of Professional Journalists announced my story about the NBA as their Best Sports Writing piece of the Year. I also won Best Use of Social Media for Louisville’s own Bryson Tiller announcing his national tour and pop-up concert series. In 2017, I was nominated for an Emmy Award for the coverage of Muhammad Ali’s memorial coverage.

After, first using web-based and social media platforms to promote my stories. I had the opportunity to go on air. There was only a few stories out there at the time but now the table has turned and dozens of stories are developed with the emphasis on “did you know that person is from Kentucky?”

Can you believe it all started from an idea and now it has flourished into its own standalone brand. My primary job at WHAS11, an ABC Affiliate is the assignment desk. In a nutshell I’m reading and/or listening to all of the story ideas, news tips and helping develop the story.

Even if the story doesn’t make air I still try and assist as many people as I can with their problems.

So, no I’m not new to the area. Some people consider me as the go-to in the community when they need assistance. Even if I can’t assist, I try to lead then in the right direction to get assistance. Once I think we can do the story. I consult with the reporter I believe has the sources and passion to get the story done.

While working around the clock in the media. It gave me other opportunities to help people. Once the demand was so real I started VIPP Communications. It’s a one-stop public relations, branding, marketing, special events and video production firm.

Then The VIPP Report was created so I could have a platform to talk about clients. Then through supply and demand everyone wanted to know where I purchased my jewelry, so I created VIPP Style an online accessory store.

So, to be nominated as “Most Admired” by the magazine is simply humbling. I’ve worked so hard for so long that I didn’t think anyone was noticing. I’ve chosen not one but multiple fields that are highly competitive. When no one wanted to help me, I created and developed what others would not give me a chance to do. To now receiving calls for assistance simply brings me to tears. This was not an overnight, an instant potato career. I’ve been moving mountains my entire adulthood and making ways out of no way.

I still have a lot more to accomplish because I’m never satisfied but to know others are watching and acknowledging that I’m on their radar lets me know that a real breakthrough is just around the corner. This is a little bit about me and what I do. I will be sharing more in the future about my journey, who I work with and why I refuse to lose.

The VIPP Report: Bumble, An International Social Media Platform to Honor #FirstMovers in Kentucky Through #BlackWomenBuilt Event

On Saturday, March 16th, eight African American women from Kentucky will be honored by Bumble through Bumble Bizz and Freedom of Priss (FOP) at Flavour lounge at a private dinner. Dinner will be followed by a celebration open to the public that will start at 9 pm. These women are being celebrated for being business owners or leaders in their fields, which include fashion, media, marketing, psychology, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Founders of Freedom of Priss, LaPrecious Brewer and Joelle Robinson want to acknowledge these business heroes and shed light on the impact that they have made in their communities. FOP will also use their unique stories to serve as empowering examples for younger minority women through a series of social media campaigns that will be ongoing.

Among the women being honored are Aryea Kolubah, fashion designer who recently had her gown featured on HBO and Vogue, Sherlene Shanklin, multimedia editor for WHAS11 and owner of VIPP Communications and Braea Tilford, former Miss Kentucky USA and founder of Grow Lead Inspire; a conference that enriches young women.
