The nation holds their breathe as the residents of Charleston, SC try to understand what happened late Wednesday evening. Around 9 p.m. a gunman walked into Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church and opened fire on the members as they were holding their weekly prayer meeting. Some churches also call it bible study. Eight were pronounced dead and the scene. One person was transported to the hospital but they did not survive. During a news conference authorities would only confirm the deaths but not the injured.
Prominent civil rights leaders are beginning to send their condolences to the pastor of the church whose also a state senator.
The FBI has joined in the investigation as authorities continue to search for the suspect. The mayor of Charleston called the shooting a hate-crime.
Ministers from the AME church and other leaders will gather at Morris Brown at 12:00 p.m. for a vigil.
There’s still a lot of unanswered questions in this case but the main goal of the city it to apprehend the suspect.
