The VIPP Report: African American Bloodstock Agent Seeks Winner’s Circle at Kentucky Derby

HARBUT-STACKED copy

LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY, Aug. 24, 2020 – The 146th running of the Kentucky Derby will be like none other.  There will be no fans in the stands at Churchill Downs, and for the first time in 13 years, African Americans will have ownership in a derby qualifying racehorse.

Ray Daniels, a Lexington businessman and Greg Harbut, a Lexington Bloodstock Agent are two of three owners of the Kentucky thoroughbred, Necker Island.  The two are among a tiny group of Black men to ever own a Derby qualifying racehorse.  “My family and I are excited and truly blessed to be part of such a momentous event,” Daniels said.

Especially noteworthy of this historic accomplishment is Harbut’s lineage.  He is the grandson of Tom Harbut, a groom and subsequently the general manager for Harry F. Guggenheim’s breeding stallion operations in the 1960s.  Tom Harbut owned a racehorse, Touch Bar that ran in the 1962 Kentucky Derby.  He did not attend to watch his horse because Black’s were not allowed to sit in the grandstands.  Greg is the great-grandson of Will Harbut, the legendary groom for Man o’ War from 1930-1946.  Many industry experts consider Man o’ War to be the greatest racehorse of all time.  “My family has been on this journey for nearly 100 years.  Horseracing is in our blood and I am humbled and honored to continue the legacy of my grandfather and great-grandfather,” Harbut said.

Many organizations are calling for a boycott of the Derby as a pathway to justice for the unarmed killing of Breonna Taylor at the hands of the Louisville Police Department.  “There is a powerful social movement sweeping the country that cannot be ignored,” said Daniels.  “Black lives matter, and I wholeheartedly stand in solidarity with the family of Breonna Taylor in the call for justice.”

Necker Island is a colt by Hard Spun who finished second in the 2007 Kentucky Derby and amassed nearly $3 million in career earnings.  Necker Island will be ridden by Miguel Mena on Sept. 5th.

Proceeds from the inaugural Grandstand Gala held on Thursday, April 30th at the KICC benefit the programs of the Stamina Foundation.  The foundation is a 501©3 organization with the mission to empower youth and young adults with the resources and life skills they need to follow their dreams.

The Stamina Foundation will pursue this mission with educational programming and events throughout the year, but the first major project will be the development of the Stamina Academy. The purpose of the Stamina Academy is to teach life skills to youth both in and out of the school system with the goal of bringing this generation back to life’s basic skills: manners, being respectful to others, self-confidence, self-motivation, and self-education.

Youth today are greatly influenced by their peers and social media. Without proper guidance or a positive infrastructure, they tend to go down a bad road, which results in negative, long-term life consequences. Stamina will teach youth to identify and pursue their passions and to focus on being great instead of trying to fit in. For additional information go to http://www.staminafd.com.

He’s bringing a young artist that’s making her name known in the hip hop game. You’ve seen her on Love and Hip Hop New York and now she has this smash hit, Bodak Yellow, which is excelling her music career. Cardi  B will join Lil Wayne in Broadbent Arena.  She recently worked with Bruno Mars on the remix of his hit song Finesse.

And let me add just one more artist to the lineup. R and B singer K. Michelle will also travel to Louisville to be a part of the show after releasing her latest album “The People I Used to Know”.  If you look at your calendar that’s the same day as the Pegasus Parade…the official kickoff to Derby weekend.

So, its Lil Wayne. Cardi B and K. Michelle in concert on Thursday, May 3rd in Broadbent Area.  Tickets for this Derby concert will sellout.  They officially go on sale Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 15th.  As I get additional information on this concert and other Kentucky Derby events I will pass them along.

DB BOURBON CANDY TEAMS UP WITH THE KENTUCKY DERBY FESTIVAL

(Louisville, KY) Everyone is prepping for this year’s Derby festivities: athletes are training for the marathons, trainers are preparing their horses for the first Saturday in May, and DB Bourbon Candy is working with the Kentucky Derby Festival to make sure their events get a taste of a delicious treat. DB Bourbon has been named the Official Chocolate for the 2017 Kentucky Derby Festival.

You will have a chance to taste their special edition candy at many KDF events this spring, including Festival Unveiled, Macy’s Spring Fashion Show, They’re Off! Luncheon, King Southern Bank BourbonVille and Celebrity Day at the Downs. DB Bourbon has also partnered with Old 502 Winery, the Official Wine of the Kentucky Derby Festival, to make truffles for the Kentucky Proud WineFest.

Robyn Stuart says “I’m excited to be the Official Chocolate for the Kentucky Derby Festival. It’s always good to be recognized for my star-studded events but there’s nothing sweeter than having the honor to represent my business on this worldwide stage on multiple platforms during lead up to the Kentucky Derby.”

Stuart goes on to say “We have created a special edition candy just for the Derby Festival, along with our traditional bourbon candy, and you can follow our social media platforms to see which events you can pick up a box.”

DB Bourbon Candy has participated in some of the biggest events across the U.S. from three invites to the Academy Awards, Emmys, Veterans Inaugural Ball, Breeder’s Cup Taste of the World at Winstar, Chris Tucker Celebrity Golf Tournament, Barbara Streisand Fundraiser, Chris Everett Charity event, Soul Train Awards, Kentucky NFL Hall of Fame and many Kentucky Derby events like Barnstable-Brown Gala, Grand Gala and 100 Black Men of Louisville.

DB Bourbon Candy, LLC can be found in various locations throughout Kentucky in Kroger Stores and Liquor Barn.  You can always visit their site at http://www.dbbourboncandy.com.

In 2002, Stuart started her business after the passing of her mother.   During the holidays, her mother would create the delicious treat as a family tradition. Robyn wanted to honor her mother in some way so she decided to start the business and make the original candy recipe apart of her business. With the support of Four Roses Distillery, Louisville Convention Center and Bourbon Country as well as the many events and activities she participates in everyone loves to see the wonderful creation that she produces.  From initially starting with candy the business has grown into developing other products such as chocolate covered fruit, cheesecakes to chocolate covered popcorn.

If you would like to setup an interview and/or invite DB Bourbon to your next event, please contact Sherlene Shanklin at sshanklin@vippcommunications.com.

A Natural from the Start: The Life and Time of Jimmy Winkfield, International Horseman

A Natural from the Start is an exhibition showcasing the rise and fall of African American jockeys in horse racing, primarily the Kentucky Derby. This exhibit explores the early years of horse racing in which African Americans dominated the sport, and how racism and segregation in the early 1900’s contributed to the decline of Black jockeys as they were vulnerable to hostility and injuries from White jockeys and owners at the time.

Did you know that Jimmy Winkfield, (Kentuckian, and Black jockey) was the last African American to date to win the Kentucky Derby? Did you know that Isaac Murphy was the winningest jockey of all time? In addition, was the 1st Jockey to be inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. Or did you know that Willie Simms perfected a riding style that became the norm in Europe? This exhibition will feature these three jockeys, and a banner dedicated to other Black jockeys with notable dates and their impact on the sport of horse racing.

Save the date of Friday, April 29, 2016 at Southeast Christian Church.  Additional information plus ticket availability information will be available soon.  You can visit www.graceattherace.com.  Stay tuned for Down the Stretch with Sherlene Shanklin for additional information and other 2016 Kentucky Derby events.
