Successful entrepreneur & Kentucky native Robyn Cunningham brings awareness to the silent killer of suicide

What looks like a perfect life to some is masking depression, stress and feeling of hopelessness

Frankfort, Ky- — Entrepreneur Robyn Kay Cunningham pens her first short story.  Her newly released book is entitled ‘My Journey To Faith’ A Short Story.   The successful owner of DB Bourbon Candy takes you through her life. Facing grief of loved ones to serve in the military during the time of war.  This veteran learned to suppress her feelings until they felt like she could not go on.  Using her faith and understanding that she has so much to live for and a support system helped her reimagine life. 

This short story is a conversation piece and a story of overcoming the unbearable.  Cunningham is telling her story to help others that feel alone.  She says, ‘Recently, I have seen so many people take their lives through suicide and I want them to know that you can bounce back but it takes time.  You cannot give up on yourself.  You cannot be ashamed of your struggles.  It makes you who you are.  My life just kept hitting me with so much at one time.  It just kept piling on. I made mistakes but I am here today to say I have a testimony, and I feel if I can change one life then it was worth telling it.”

Cunningham adds “I used my faith to overcome some of the things I was going through but when you read my story you will understand how difficult it was and I begin to question so many things.  I had to step back to catch my breath because the very people who showed me with love had no idea that when I saw them it caused me to keep reliving memories I was trying to forget.  So, it felt like I could never heal.  I know so many people are feeling like this and I was to be a voice to those suffering in silence.  You can heal.” 

Today, Suicide is the 11thleading cause of death in the U.S. according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Data & Statistics Fatal Injury Report for 2023. The report also says suicide was the second leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 10-34, and the fourth leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 35 and 44.

In 2023, National Survey of Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), an estimated 12.8 million adults age 18 or older reported having thoughts of suicide, and 1.5 million (0.6%) adults attempted suicide during the past year.

Latin Music Awards Kentucky

On Saturday, September 20th it’s the 7th Latin Music Awards Kentucky celebrating music, but they are doing it for a great cause. 

Israel Cuenca, President of Latin Music Awards says “We are going to give ten different scholarships for students at the University of Louisville, Jefferson Community College and Bellarmine University.  We have a great lineup of performances.  We have multiple bands playing mariachi playing, reggaeton, salsa style of music as well.  It’s going to be a great night of music and celebration.” 

It’s all takes place on Saturday night at 8 pm. at Fourth Street Live in downtown Louisville.  This is a free event dedicated to celebrating the vibrant talent and culture of Latin music in Kentucky and across the region.

Relatives of Rahaman Ali need the community’s help to give him a proper funeral and burial

I’ve just learned that the family of Rahaman Ali is needing some assistance. A GoFundMe page was created to help with the funeral and burial of Ali. Jan Waddell, the grandson of attorney Jan Waddell Sr. put out a heartfelt message. He says “I’m reaching out to share a cause that needs immediate attention. Rahman Ali, the brother of Muhammad Ali, has passed away, and his family is facing a difficult situation. They are in urgent need of funds to give Rahman a proper funeral and burial. It’s heartbreaking to know that they currently lack the resources to cover these essential costs.”

Waddell goes on to say, “Rahman was a kind-hearted person who positively impacted many lives. He was more than just Muhammad Ali’s brother; he was a cherished figure in his community, always spreading kindness and support. It’s truly disheartening that the estate and Muhammad’s widow have chosen not to provide assistance during this time.”


Waddell says if you can, please consider donating to help ensure that Rahman is laid to rest with the dignity he deserves. Every contribution counts, no matter how small. Thank you for your support during this difficult time.

Waddell Sr. is a cousin of the Ali brothers. He was a pallbearer for Muhammad Ali’s funeral in 2016.

METRO DISABILITY COALITION RECOGNIZES THOSE WHO GO ABOVE & BEYOND TO HELP OTHERS

(Louisville, KY) The Metro Disability Coalition will hold our 23rd Annual Breaking Barriers Spotlight Awards on Friday, May 9th from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. at the Rudd Heart & Lung Center located at 201 Abraham Flexner Way.

Prior to the ceremony, there will be a reception for special honorees, dignitaries and other special guests participating in the program. This year, Shannon Davis aka ‘Coach by Shine’ will serve as this year’s master of ceremony.   

We are excited to announce that this year’s guest speaker is Dr. Sherry Babbage Melisizwe.  The Louisville community knows her as Dr. Babbage and her main practice which was established in West Louisville.Educating the community on dental health and treatment. She graduated from the University of Louisville School of Dentistry. Becoming a D.M.D in 1981. Making her one of the few African American female dentists in the Commonwealth of Kentucky at that time. Receiving countless awards for work in her profession and service to the community.  Dr. Babbage says the work she does is her ministry. We chose Dr. Babbage because she demonstrates professionalism and love for her community each and every day. 

The evening is a celebration for those who take time out of their day to assist others. Its concern for others is what makes the following special.  They take pride in giving back and they care about the well-being of all people in the community.  The following good neighbors and unsung heroes in their various fields range from service workers, educators to youth who go above and beyond the call of duty to assist those in need. Which includes many from Jefferson County Public Schools, (JCPS). We are excited to announce this year’s honorees.

Legacies Unlimited Presents Soulful Sounds of Derbytown

(Louisville, KY) Legacies Unlimited’s annual Walnut Street Revue presents the Soulful Sounds of Derbytown, a tribute to Louisville’s African American Musicians & Entertainers at 7:30 pm on January 25th at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage (KCAAH) located at 1701 W. Muhammed Ali Blvd.

The show will feature “International Queen of the Blues,” Toni Green and bluesman Big “Poppa” Stampley. Green recently received the W C Handy Lifetime Achievement Award whose previous recipients include Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland, Koko Taylor & the great Al Green.

Reserved tickets are $65 per person and $45 for general admission. Tickets are available online at redpintix.com and at Better Days Records East at 921 Barret Avenue.

THE DEION BRANCH FOUNDATION GIVES BACK TO THE COMMUNITY BY SUPPORTING FAMILIES THAT NEED A LITTLE ASSISTANCE DURING THE HOLIDAYS

(Louisville, KY) Two-time Super Bowl Champion & Super Bowl 39 MVP Deion Branch along with his foundation assisted 20 families in making the holiday season brighter for their children. Children had the opportunity to shop for clothes, toys, and gifts for loved ones at the Walmart on Standiford Plaza Drive.  To help them pick out their selections, players of the University of Louisville Football team played Santa’s helpers. 

Branch currently works as a staff member at his alma mater, University of Louisville.  Branch says, “It is so important to give back to those so support you, the fans.  That is why I always try to bring the guys out with me to show how important it is to the community.  To see these young people smile, run up and down the isles full of excitement makes my heart happy. You can see the relief in parents’ eyes that their children are going to be able to celebrate and go back to school with a story or two from their holiday break.  We definitely created memories and fans.” 

Youth participating in the shopping spree came from the Neighborhood House, Louisville Central Community Center Mini-Versity Child Development Center, and the West Louisville Performing Arts Academy. 

A special thank you to R&B Roofing and Remodeling who donated their time and a monetary gift to each child involved in the holiday spree. We also would like to thank the team at Walmart for being so accommodating as we took over the store and even had shoppers stopping to get photos with the team and Branch.   

Branch goes on to say, “The holiday season is challenging time for families, so I hope we were able to relieve some stress and in return remind the team that we are blessed.  We do not take anything or anyone for granted.  This was a community project, but it was a reminder that we all need to work as team.  When we do, we can win.”

The Cards will now focus on their bowl game which will be played on New Year’s Eve against Washington in the Sun Bowl.

The Deion Branch Charitable Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is to offer support to children’s mental, physical, emotional wellbeing and for those who have been infected with meningitis.  The DBCF’s mission is to help with research and to find a cure to ease the struggle for children like Deion’s son. One of Smoketown’s Oldest Congregations Celebrates Their Pastor & First Lady’s First Anniversary

(Louisville, KY) The Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church will be celebrating the first year of Rev. Jeremiah Johns Sr. and First Lady Michelle Johns as pastor of our historic church. On Sunday, August 25th, the anniversary committee have planned a day of appreciation and thanks for Pastor Johns’ spiritual leadership. 

The committee centered the program around the theme “Approved by God.’  Inspired by the bible scripture found in 1 Thessalonians 2:4. 

We invite you to Sunday School at 9:30 am followed by morning service at 11 am.  Our special guest will be Rev. Dr. Jeremiah L. Parks of the Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Owensboro, Ky.

THE DEION BRANCH FOUNDATION TAKE LOUISVILLE YOUTH SHOPPING FOR CHRISTMAS

(Louisville, KY) Last night (Friday, Dec 15th) in Louisville the Deion Branch Foundation founded by two-time Superbowl champion and current staff member of the University of Louisville Football team Deion Branch took 30 children shopping for the holidays.  Branch along with current members of the UofL Football team helped local youth from the Louisville Central Community Center, Portland Neighborhood House and Sowing Seeds with Faith shop for clothes and toys.  They were at the Target Store located at 3600 Mall Road, 40218. A special thank you to Dr. Adora Hicks for coordinating the players to make sure they shared in the experience. 

Branch says “Me and my family have been truly blessed and we want to help those in need.  Since working for the university, in the past two years I’ve gained a better understanding of the importance of giving back, especially to the fans. Families have been through so much over the past few years and if we can help in any way to lighten the load, especially during the holidays, we want to do that.  I’ve excited to bring some of the players from the team to help me spread some holiday cheer as they prepare for the Holiday Bowl.”

(Louisville, KY) The MELANnaire Marketplace holiday market is in full swing welcoming shoppers to their storefront in Mall St. Matthews.  Black-owned businesses update their inventory weekly so guests can visit multiple times as we prepare for Christmas and Kwanzaa.    

The MELANnaire Marketplace holiday market showcases businesses who do not have a storefront and/or a large team.  They assist the entrepreneurs in promoting and selling their products and services. When you visit the holiday market shoppers will find apparel, handcrafted jewelry, signature cotton candy, popcorn books, toys, accessories, candles plus much more.

This weekend, the cast of ‘The Soul of Christmas”, a production of Rush Trowel will be in the marketplace performing.  We invite you to come out shop and enjoy some great entertainment by one of Louisville’s premiere entertainment producers. 

We will also have youth from our future MELANnaire Mentor Program job shadowing as greeters.  Trabue says “We train and help develop job skills at a young age to instill in them the importance of work ethic and how to make money which in turn decreases violence in the community.  We are keeping them busy and showing them opportunities and introducing them to positive role models exceling right here in our community.”

MELANnaire Marketplace opens holiday marketplace in Mall St. Matthews

Ribbon-cutting this Friday at 11:00 a.m.

(Louisville, KY) The MELANnaire Marketplace invites you to the ribbon cutting and grand opening of our holiday market on Friday, November 10th at 11:00 a.m. The marketplace will display dozens of local minority businesses all in one space so holiday shoppers can get an opportunity to support multiple small businesses at one large retail space.

At the ribbon cutting you will get the opportunity to meet many of the business owners, and supporters of the MELANnaire Marketplace.  Our confirmed speakers are Dr. F. Bruce Williams of Bates Memorial Church and our partners Dave Christopher, ED with AMPED and Cassandra Webb, Director of Russell: Place of Promise. 

The marketplace will remain open every weekend until January 2, 2024.  The founder of the MELANnaire Marketplace Nachand Trabue says, “Every year we continue to grow in ways I never thought was possible.  When you walk into our storefront there will be displays showcasing Black-owned businesses and their merchandise and/or product.  It’s going to be a mall within a mall.  Each providing unique gift ideas.  I can’t wait for you to stop by and see what the businesses have to offer. According to Louisville Metro Government, Blacks make up 23.4% of the population, and makeup 2.4% when it comes to owning a business.  The MELANnaire Marketplace is working to better that statistic by finding entrepreneurs who have great concepts, and/or products but not the revenue to sustain storefronts and/or full-time staff. 

Each weekend there will be special activities from a trunk show to meeting special guests and giveaways to complete your shopping experience.  The MELANnaire experience will be surrounded by over 130 stores, multi-media cinema and multiple culinary dining options.

Twenty-seven ladies will compete for titles of Miss, Ms., and Talented Teen Miss Black Kentucky USA

United Crown Productions is excited to announce the date of Miss Black Kentucky USA. On
Sunday, October 15th, at 3:00 pm at Memorial Auditorium our community will witness the
crowning of three women who will represent Kentucky in Miss Black USA 2024.

After a successful restart in 2022, Kentucky will have six (6) in the talented teen division, eight (8)
in the Miss. division and thirteen (13) in the Ms. division competing for the crown. Each looking
forward to the experience along with the activities leading up to the October 15th event.

Tickets are now on sale, and you can purchase them on Eventbrite. We have provided a link for
promotion. Miss Black Kentucky 2023.

Last year’s winner in the Miss division, Miss Ariel Thompson went on to win Miss Black USA in
Washington, DC and will reign for the next 12 months.

Dr. Ashley Anderson, Executive Director of Miss Black Kentucky USA says “I am so happy to give
women of color the opportunity. It is more than just a pageant but a chance for these young ladies
to showcase themselves. This is something the community can be proud of because we are
helping prepare our future leaders. The contestants are free to be who they are as they embrace
their heritage. I invite you to come out and support them as they compete for scholarships which
will help with their future career goals.”

(Louisville, KY) On Monday, May 8th, Roots 101 welcomes the long awaited tribute to the ‘King of Kentucky” the late Stephen “Static Major” Garrett.  The exhibit will take you through the legendary music career of the musical genius.  The Louisville, Kentucky native was a singer, songwriter, and record producer.  Born on November 11, 1974, and died on February 23, 2008.  He was a member of the R&B trio Playa that went on to have hits like “Cheers 2 U” and  “Don’t Stop the Music”.  This is their 25th anniversary of the group’s formation. 

Static Major has produced with some of the biggest artists in R&B and Hip-Hop from Aaliyah, Ginuwine, Nicole Wray, Pretty Ricky to Lil Wayne.  Proceeding Garrett’s death, in 2018, hip-hop superstar Drake featured Garrett in his hit song “After Dark”.  Then in 2020, Louisville native Jack Harlow hit. “Luv Is Dro”, which was a song of Garrett reworked by Harlow. 

Prior to the public exhibit opening, which will be in Roots 101 from May 8th thru July 8th.  (With a possibility of a longer run).  There will be a private event on Sunday, May 7th from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm.  The Music Is Like Breathing Brunch will give family, friends, and special guests an opportunity to get the first look at the exhibit and share special stories of the talented Kentucky native who was ahead of his time. 

Avonti Garrett, the widow and mother of his two children remembers not only the artist but the family man.  “Stephen Ellis Garrett aka Static Major was a special one-of-a-kind person.  He not only was a talented singer, songwriter, and producer, he was a good husband, father, son, and friend.  He was a family man who was generous to all.  Static had a way of leaving a memorable impression with everyone he encountered.  The love that he generously displayed made all of us feel special to him.  His timeless music still has a great influence over the music industry.  Static Major is and will forever be a true legend.  The Goat!!! By age 33.  His family, friends, and I appreciate the love and we are truly grateful for the honoring of his legacy.  He is greatly missed by all. “

Lamont Collins, Founder of Roots 101 shares his excitement about having the exhibit at his museum.  He says, “It’s so important to document and preserve our history.  Stephen “Static Major” Garrett played and still plays a vital role in the entertainment industry.  This was a long time in the making, this should have happened a long time ago. We are happy that Roots 101 in Garrett’s hometown was able to make it happen.  We invite you to come see the temporary exhibit.  We hope it will have a permanent home someday, but it is an honor to be the first to display his life and superstar career.  Legacies matter and Roots 101 continues to chronicle history of African Americans in our community and the outstanding contributions made not only to Kentucky but the world.”

Family & Children’s Place will hold a rally to kick off Child Abuse Prevention Month

Family & Children’s Place will hold an in-person rally on Thursday, March 30th at 10:00 a.m. in the parking lot of our headquarters located at 525 Zane Street.

April is the designated start of Child Abuse Prevention Month but anyone who works and/or advocates for children understand it’s a 365 24/7 obligation.  Educating children on their right for being safe in hopes of strengthen families across Kentucky and Southern Indiana.    The month also brings awareness to those in the community unaware of how serious the problem is in Kentuckiana.

According to the latest national report of Child Maltreatment, Kentucky has dropped in the ranking from fifth, to sixth in the rate of child abuse/neglect. That’s 14.7 victims per 1,000 children. Indiana remains at #11 with their rate of child abuse/neglect at 13.6 victims per 1,000 children.

In response to those startling statistics and to bring awareness, Family & Children’s Place will have dignitaries, community leaders and advocates talking about child abuse, violence, exploitation, neglect, prevention, intervention, and restoration efforts for children and families.

The gala is an evening of Black Excellence and Elegance with guests encouraged to wear African attire and/or black tie as you enjoy a special performance by The Unlimited Show Band.  Three deserving individuals in our community will receive the MOLO Village Community Award. 

This year’s awardees will be Dave Christopher Sr., Executive Director, and Founder of AMPED; Honorable Colonel Pamela Stevenson, State Representative for Kentucky House District 43; and Honorable Greg Fischer, Louisville Metro Mayor from 2011 to 2023.

Black Professionals Mixer-Louisville announces 2023 events

TheVIPPReport: Julia Youngblood, honoring women in our community

Many may not know the name Julia Youngblood but countless youth and artists know her as the woman who gave them a chance to expand their horizons. I sit down with her to talk about the importance of giving back. 

Youngblood is one of the quiet forces in our community making sure the arts is available for anyone whose interested.  She worked at the Kentucky Arts Reach program. Dedicating her life to make the community better. 

Youngblood says “For the 16 years I took care of it.  I really worked on opening up the space more and more for communities especially communities of color or folks that might of felt like they really could walk in that door.  I produced 100s of events open mics and many performances on many big stages, all the stages throughout the building.”

Introducing some 50 thousand people to the Kentucky Center for the Arts space that normally would not of had that opportunity. She says “One of my biggest joys was creating culturally related performance pieces that came from the community.  It wasn’t me creating those pieces. It was reaching out to the community and saying what do you want to express today. To me that’s extremely powerful.”  

Youngblood currently owns Youngblood Harmonizing Arts. She took me to a time in her life when she decided to focus on helping others. She took me back to when she was 20 years old.  “A really pivotal part of my life. I lost the ability to walk at the time they thought I had multiple sclerosis . Over time being helped by many other people I was able to get well.”  She goes on to say “Once I really got to where I was able to function and walk again I thought that I just want my life to be of service.” 

Her unique way of looking at life and understanding that expression is a part of the process when healing a community. She says “A lot of time people feel the need to feel seen and that’s a healing.” 

Youngblood admits she’s not outspoken but her now 90 year old mother gave her some advice when she was younger. “Walk into any space and sit down.  So that is what I hope for all of us in life that we call all walk in and feel like it okay to be where we are.”

She tells me that her mom and 25 year old daughter Johnny Storm inspire her.  She goes onto say she appreciates how her daughter views life. Youngblood, a self-taught artist has an art exhibit with almost 40 pieces ranging from paintings to print on textiles.

TheVIPPReport: J. Brown Foundation announces 3rd annual golf scramble kicking off Kentucky Derby week

(Louisville, KY) Retired NFL and University of Louisville football star Jamon Brown and the J. Brown Foundation announce their 3rd Annual J. Brown Foundation Golf Scramble presented by Kroger and the Kentucky Derby Festival.  The scramble will be held on Monday, May 2nd at the University of Louisville Golf Club, 401 Champions Way in Simpsonville. 

The scramble’s registration begins at 12:00 pm and golfers will tee-off at 1:00pm.  Proceeds will benefit the Jamon Brown Foundation Empowerment Center.  Giving youth and the community a beacon of hope. 

Brown says “This empowerment center is near and dear to my heart.  I want to leave a legacy in the community that help raise me and supported me throughout my career.  This is my hometown and I want to make positive contributions for the betterment of the whole community, and it begins with the community I grew up in.  I can’t thank everyone enough for your support.”

The mission of the J. Brown Foundation is to impact the lives of those struggling with Poverty, Violence, and Youth Homelessness, and to improve upon the Education and Healthy Living issues that are typically prevalent in at risk areas, while influencing others to do the same.

As we celebrate March as Women’s History Month, we recognize legendary women as well as the unsung women leaders who work tirelessly without any recognition.  United Crowns Productions announces the return of Miss Black Kentucky USA.  Giving young women of color an opportunity to experience a pageant format, showcase their talent and scholarship to assist them with their educational endeavors.  The pageant will be held October 7th-9th in Louisville, Kentucky in Memorial Auditorium. 

Black women from all over the state  of Kentucky will be in Louisville not only to compete for the crown but to learn about their heritage, meet and hear influential community leaders, network amongst fellow contestants and to win prize money that will help them further their education. The mission of United Crown Productions is to encourage all women to embrace their beauty and empower them with confidence and leadership skills.

The VIPP Report: Introducing you to the West Louisville Performing Arts Academy

In today’s Your Story. Their name has changed but their music remains the same bringing all genres of music to West Louisville. I talk to the founder about their success. You recognize them as the West Louisville Boys Choir. 

In 1990, McDaniel Bluitt started The West Louisville Performing Arts Academy originally named the Moore Temple Boys Choir.  In 2002, the choir expanded by adding girls to the program. 

McDaniel says “We started the program because kids needed a way they can be engaged positively and doing the kinds of things that can make them productive members of the community.” 

Two current students, Sylvia Lontz and Alexandria Bluitt were introduced to the program differently but both believe it’s an amazing opportunity and everyone feels like family. 

Sylvia Lontz is heading to Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) this fall.  She says “I personally found out about this choir from my former choir director at Central High School.  He introduced it to me.  I though it would be an amazing opportunity for me and my younger sister.” 

Alexandria Bluitt is currently in high school but understands the importance of legacy.  She says “I’ve been in this choir ever since I was 4 or 5 years old.  Considering my grandparents started the choir.  This choir gave me a sense of family, not because they started it but because of the connections I made with people in this choir.”

The program is a melting pot of talents discovered within each child.  A. Bluitt goes on to say “It gives me a sense of structure.  For me personally anyway and I believe everyone needs a foundation to build on top of.”

M. Bluitt says “It’s a part of our slogan its more than just music…its more than just singing because children bring with us whatever they have with them at the time.  Some have training prior to coming to me while others haven’t.” 

They’ve had a chance to travel and perform all over the world from Bahamas to Las Vegas, and all over the state of Kentucky.  With that exposure caused some of his former students to think out of the box.   Key’mon Murrah & Kay’mon Murrah both participated in the program.  As adults they are both classically trained. 

Key’mon is moving to New York.  He says “I’m going to Juilliard in the fall for a graduate diploma. And then I have me Opera debut this winter.”

Kay’mon remains in the area to help others interested in the arts.  He says “I’m working with Kentucky Opera at various events but right now im working as a board member for the public arts commission in Lexington, KY. So that’s been really fulfilling. “

Mr. Bluitt says “Music evolves its never to stay the same.” And so does its leadership. His son Joshua will take the helm and carry on the tradition.  Bluitt says he will still be around consulting and help counsel but feels it’s the right time to pass the baton so his son can take the program even further. 

McDaniel says “One of the things its accomplishing its helping to dispel the myth in the minds of so many people.  Not just Black people, White people m Jewish people not just men but men and women.  They get a chance to see the program that’s holistic.  They get a chance to see the program as positive and believe it or not got their children in it. That’s ongoing and I’m proud of that.” 

Kay’mon says “You have to be open for new things and be willing to absorb it all. I really believe once you start that process you will be able to fly anywhere.”

The VIPP Report: Helping businesses obtain construction opportunities the right way with Vincel Anthony and the 7PM Group

Love for community and wanting to see others reach their ultimate potential as an entrepreneur is the goal for Vincel Anthony and the 7PM Group.  In today’s Your Story, I spoke to Anthony about holding businesses accountable when it comes to minority construction opportunities. 

Vincel Anthony and his mentor Carl Brazley started the 7 PM Group symbolizing the number for perfection in biblical terms and P-M stands for project management. 

Anthony says “We’re the glue, the liaison between the owner of the big project and the general contractor who in many cases has been challenged with executing whatever the owner wants to have done.”

He attended Male High School and Western KY University as a student-athlete playing football for the Hilltoppers. Graduating with a Bachelors in Business Administration later receiving his Master’s Degree in information technology, (I-T).  He talks about where his focus currently is when it comes to projects. “We wanted to work specifically in our community”.
 
Many contracts allot a percentage for minority businesses. In construction its 15%. Anthony breaks it down so we can understand how its determined.  “Well, Its off of every dollar, 15 cents needs to ideally be spent with a minority business owner.  10 cents of that dollar needs to be spent with a woman owned business owner and that’s is the goal.”


He also adds, “All of this construction you see going on over this community like a lot of urban communities -decent sized cities…Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Nashville there’s cranes everywhere and the challenge is, are minority businesses actually participating.” 
 
Anthony says the community needs to lift as they climb. As you succeed, reach back down and pull someone else up. 
“To be intentional when it comes to caring about other people and to really feel in your heart that its really possible for us all to win.”

The VIPP Report: ‘Staying Strong’ in 2020 and hoping for ‘Peace & Prosperity’ in 2021

What can you say about 2020?  I call it the year of the ‘thick’ skin.  We have endured a lot.  Every generation faces the unthinkable and you wondered how did they make it?  Now, we have a story to tell. Especially those of color who’ve privately faced obstacles of discrimination for many years.  From being overlooked, told they were not good enough, why can’t you just work one job, you do too much, and why do you work in your community so much with no pay helping people you don’t even know. 

If I ask that question, the majority of you will say ‘What I went to school for I was never given the chance to see where it could take me.’ Some will also point out that they never reached their ultimate potential and that’s why they had to utilize their skills in other ways. 

Some employers hire people of color and then leave it there with no further action.  Regardless, how hard you try you can never get ahead.  Then you realize that you’ve wasted valuable years being faithful to someone who could care less about your progression.  So, instead of letting your skillset go, you find alternatives to keep them sharp. 

When protests broke out across the country especially in my city of Louisville so many individuals thought to themselves, ‘So I’m not the only one?’ Feeling like you’re facing situations alone and that became a defining moment that you’re not. 

When people begin to speak out it gave those suffering in silence some hope. Even if you didn’t see them marching in the streets. There’s a lot of people in their workplace trying to change the culture even putting their careers on the line. In offices, boardrooms, and in closed door meetings people are speaking up & finally being asked their opinion. The invitation to the table will bring a long term foundation instead of a quick fix. There’s so many working behind the scenes and do not want the credit. Find your place and let’s all help make a difference.

As we head into the new year, how do we juggle our emotions? Pinned up anger while you’re still working at a high level.  Its been a year of sickness, death, and heartache.  While many want people to forget we have to remember how we got here so that we don’t let history repeat itself again.

THE HEART AND “SOUL” OF THE URBAN COMMUNITY CHANGES MUSIC FORMAT AS IT CONTINUES TO USE ITS VOICE AS A PLATFORM FOR CHANGE

(Louisville, KY) On Friday, August 7, 2020 at 10:47 am the sound of 1350AM WLOU & 104.7FM returned to its original format of soul music.

With the new stereo sound, you will see a new logo and station tagline, but the roots of the station remain intact but with a broader appeal from news and information but filling a void in the community when it comes to soul music. The format will give listeners an opportunity to go back down memory lane with music from Earth, Wind & Fire, O’Jays, Stylistics, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Mary J. Blige, Sade, Isley Brothers, Anita Baker plus many more.

“The Original Soul of Louisville” adds Archie Dale as the General Manager and Mark Gunn as Program Director and Afternoon Drive On-Air Personality to the already dynamic team of Krystal “Miss Krystal” Goodner in the Morning Drive and others to be announced.

With 70 years on the airwaves, WLOU is one of the oldest urban stations in the U.S. So, when it was acquired by David B. Smith Sr., long time radio personality, program director and co-owner of Kentuckiana Broadcast Group he wanted to make sure its rich history was celebrated but also be a voice for African Americans. Gunn says “We’re reaching the underserved adult Black demographic by going a lot deeper musically than the other Gold based stations in the market. In addition to REAL Soul Music, WLOU continues to deal with the soul of Louisville by directly addressing social issues we are facing today and to be an information hub to our listeners not only on the air, in the community but on our social platforms.

Smith’s love for radio has been a constant especially in Louisville and Southern Indiana so when he heard that the station maybe acquired from someone outside the region he says “Passing up the opportunity to purchase such a legendary station was not an option. The possibility of WLOU being owned by anyone not from here just wouldn’t be right”. “I’m honored to walk in the footsteps of former owner The Reverend Dr. William E. Summers III”.

With more than 30 years in the radio industry, Smith says they are not deleting the Gospel programming but moving it to our sister station, AM 1240, WLLV.

The VIPP Report: A retired pastor talks about two things many places of worship are dealing with during COVID-19 which are ‘faith’ and ‘finance’

Did you ever wonder what it takes to keep a place of worship open?  From services, events to meetings from both its members and the community.

In times of uncertainty many depend on their faith to get them through difficult times.   It’s the one place we were taught in this generation that the church is the one institution you could depend to be open.

Many understand that extreme measures were needed to slow down the spread of the coronavirus, but many religious organizations will need to turn to more than their faith but now finances or should I say the lack of finances.

Congregations across Kentucky were already struggling with the increase in expenses and the decline in membership and visitors. Now, in these times will many survive the shutdown?

Without the constant of tithes, offering and donations many across the Commonwealth they must seek funding just to keep their doors open.

With so much on everyone’s plate churches are missing the collection plate being passed. I’m sure anything you can give will help them in ways you have no idea.  Many are still trying to assist members and many of the church’s leadership are reaching into their own pockets to keep some programs going.

Whether you go to your place of worship once a week, once a month and/or once a year bills still need to be paid.

(Louisville, KY) The Metro Disability Coalition invites you to attend their 21st Annual Breaking Barriers Spotlight Awards on Monday, March 16th from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at the Rudd Heart & Lung Center located at 201 Abraham Flexner Way.

There will be a reception prior to the ceremony for special guests, honorees and those participating in the program.   This year’s theme is Working Toward a Fully Accessible Community for All Disabled Individuals.

They were introduced to the world when they performed “Stand By Me” at the 2018 Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.

Now, The Kingdom Choir announces their North American tour.  On Wednesday, October 16th they will travel to Louisville  and perform at Brown Theatre.

Founded in 1994. The choir draws their inspiration from various Christian traditions and is dedicated to creating a sound that reflects the community.

Tickets start at $25.00 for the two hour show.

Now Let’s Get Fit Foundation teams with Rajon Rondo Foundation, Kroger and Norton’s for Health and Wellness Day and Back to School Giveaways

 Louisville (August 1, 2019) It’s the “Countdown to Classes” as many families shift gears to prepare their school-age children for the upcoming school year.  The Now Let’s Get Fit Foundation has teamed with Kroger, and the Rajon Rondo Foundation for the Back to School giveaways Health and Wellness Day.

There will be two days will of fun, fitness inspired activities and free school supplies.  We invite the Portland community to participate in the kick off scheduled for Saturday August 10th with Norton’s Unity Jam at Molly Leonard Portland Community Center located at 640 North 27th Street, Louisville. The Unity Jam is from 10-3p will consist of over 22 vendors and will giveaway over 1,000 free back packs and school supplies.

Then we head to West Louisville on Sunday August 11th.  We will be at Kroger at 2710 W. Broadway, Louisville from 3-6p. The event will giveaway over 200 backpacks and school supplies and include Zumba, boot camp, health screenings, dental consultation, kids bounce house, coloring stations and much more.

The Let’s Get Fit Foundation has a mission to combat obesity and instill Health and Wellness through Fitness and Nutrition. Each event is family friendly, Free to the public and includes fitness classes, nutrition stations, health screenings (for obesity related illness), kid zone activities and giveaways. along with other current and former local athletes in attendance and participating.

“Our mission is to not only give back to but to leave a lasting impact by providing resources and community outreach. Being able to help families with back to school supplies while also providing them with a free day of health and wellness that they can apply to their lives moving forward is the least we can do. The VIPP Report: The Green House Family Resource Center plants a new seed of hope on growing, supporting and sustaining families

Grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at their new headquarters just a block away from courts system

(Louisville, KY) So many have expressed their concern that they have to travel all over the city to handle their social service needs.  We introduce to the community, The Green House.  The family resource center provides supervised visitation and facilitated exchanges, individual, co-parenting and group therapy, and psychiatric services all under one roof for the convenience of their clients.

On Friday, August 9th at 717 W. Market Street, Suite 1 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm city officials, community leaders, clients and prospective clients will tour the facility and interact with staff.  During the open house, a ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 4:00 pm.

The Green House’s founder Jessica Green understands and is appreciative of the one stop shop convenience.  Green, a family law practitioner, healthy family advocate and adoptive mother of three children says “In honor and loving memory of her parents, James and Dr. Judith Green, who adopted 11 children, and fostered over 100 children during their lifetimes, The Green House, was birthed, furthering their legacy of creating a better community, one family and one child at a time. I too understand the importance as a mother the difficulty that many families have in going to multiple service providers to make sure that their family’s needs are met in a timely fashion. The Green House accepts all insurances for therapeutic services and offer competitive and affordable rates for our visitation and exchange services.

In addition to offering supervised visitation (both monitored and sight and sound), facilitated child exchanges, we are pleased to also offer individual and group therapy, co-parenting therapy, reunification therapy, parenting classes, provide documentation for Court and CHFS services, and have a board-certified psychiatrist on our staff.  Certain clients may also qualify for case management services.

My first segment for The Lens, a weekly program focusing  and celebrating urban lifestyle and their unique perspective on issues took place in the historic Smoketown neighborhood. It’s the oldest African-American neighborhood in Louisville, KY.

*It’s Bring It Live, The Dance Battle.  The show takes place on Monday, July 22nd at 7:30 p.m.

*The Juneteenth Jubilee at Waterfront Park had to be rescheduled due to rain.  So they moved it to Sunday, July 28th.  The new date signifies the adoption of the 14th amendment to the U-S constitution was certified.  The amendment granted citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the United States which included slaves.

*Boys 2 Men will be at the Indiana State Fair on Wednesday, August 14th.

*The Kentucky State Fair announces Sheila E and the GAP Experience on Friday, August 16th.  The concert is free with paid gate admission.  The KY State Fair runs August 15th through the 25th.

*The NAACP Hardin County Branch will host their 28th Annual Freedom Fund Banquet on Saturday, September 21st.  Their special guest speaker will be Roland Martin.

*It’s Wu-Tang Clan’s 36th Chambers 25th Anniversary Tour on Friday, October 18th at Paristown Hall on Brent Street.  Tickets are $115.  You can purchase them at kentuckycenter.org.

The VIPP Report: KCAAH will host a family fun day to commemorate Juneteenth

Juneteenth Family Fun Day will take place this weekend just before Juneteenth, the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States.

The Juneteenth Family Fun Day is where community is invited to come and explore the solar system in UofL’s Rauch Portable Planetarium, participate in puppet-making workshop with puppet master Troy Johnson, and Nana Yaa Asantewaa will perform her “Weaving Webs of Wisdom” in her storytelling circle. This year, they will feature Maker13 and the Maker Mobile.  There will also be other fun things for children to enjoy from face painting, snapping it up at the photo booth, Planet Mogul to a bouncy for youth to enjoy.  In addition, you can get your competitive spirit on with cards, checkers, chess, cornhole and more!

The Juneteenth Family Fun Day is FREE and open to the public.

A NIGHT OF INSPIRATION RECOGNIZES THREE PASSIONATE LEADERS WHO’VE DEDICATED THEIR LIVES TO DEVELOP YOUTH IN THE COMMUNITY

(Louisville, KY) Aspire Basketball Academy continues to motivate and inspire youth in the community to reach their ultimate potential.  The academy takes a timeout to acknowledge the unsung MVPs in our community that work tirelessly on the court and in life to assist youth by keeping them inbounds and on track for success.

It’s A Night of Inspiration Scholarship and Awards Gala on Sunday, February 10, 2019 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at The Majestic, 1535 Lytle Street.  The inaugural event is to inspire, develop and cultivate future community leaders with the core academic and leadership skills to prepare them for life beyond their time at Aspire Academy.  This year’s host for the gala will be Perrin Johnson.

The evening will honor some local legends that have dedicated their lives to helping youth. This year’s honorees will be Tony Williams, Daniel Ross and Bob Redman; their passion, success stories and accomplishments will be recognized.  You will also get to meet international and local students in the program and the Aspire staff who directly mentor the student athletes. Also, the scholarship and awards gala will highlight the importance of education and youth sports as it relates to the development of children in our community.

The evening will be filled with inspirational stories, great food, drinks, and live entertainment. The proceeds will go directly to the program to support the students, education, transportation, and lodging. All of these things are essential to ensure the student’s success.

Aspire Basketball Academy provides three types of programs which includes the Junior Wizards, a developmental youth grassroots program, Aspire Academy, a national high school program and the Aspire Academy College Prep which is designed for post graduate activities while in the program.

The VIPP Report: Kin Killin’ Kin Travelling Art Exhibition in Louisville at KCAAH

(Louisville, KY) The Kentucky Center for African American Heritage is exhibiting James Pate’s KKK Series Kin Killin’ Kin Traveling Art Exhibition September 14 – November 12, 2018. The artist James Pate’s exhibit features scenes of young African-American men donned in Ku Klux Klan hoods committing acts of violence, creating an overt comparison between gang violence and the terrorism of the KKK. Pate says, “the numbers of Blacks killed by other Blacks since reconstruction far exceeds those lynched by “Whites”. Sadly, this pattern continued year after year, up to the present day”. The Center for Disease Control cites homicide as the leading cause of death for Black males between the age of 15 and 34.

Pate’s Kin Killin’ Kin is designed to shock and stop the viewer. Pate says “mainly, I want kids to pause and reflect”.

To close out the exhibition, a Youth Voices Against Violence Forum will held at the Heritage Center on Saturday, November 3, 2018, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. During this forum, District 15 Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton will facilitate a panel of youth from our community who will discuss the themes of gun violence and other forms of violence occurring in our society today. This panel of youth will examine the themes of gun violence within the context of public health, bystander action, healing through arts, and mobilizing for change through community dialogues.

Kin Killin’ Kin curator Willis Bing Davis says, “art holds the power to promote change”. For Davis, that’s partly because art is a language that everyone understands. “It is the universal connection of the art,” he said. “Art is one of the things that touches all of us.” Art is also a liberating language, he says. “Sometimes the art can say something that we can’t say in words.”

The Heritage Center views this exhibition as a powerful tool to promote community dialogue and community action by delving deeper into the themes of the exhibit, highlighting current efforts in violence prevention in Metro Louisville and cultivating the youth voice in the community. The Heritage Center recognizes the increase in gun violence and its impact on the communities it serves and presents Kin Killin’ Kin for the community to take action.

The VIPP Report: Hideaway Festival Comes to Louisville this Sunday

Giving the whole family something to do under one roof

You are invited to the first ever technology, arts and music festival in Louisville.  This year’s event will be held in the Germantown neighborhood on Sunday, October 7th starting at 2:30pm at the Art Sanctuary located at 1433 South Shelby Street.

The Hideaway Fest is a day filled with a mix of music, comedy, interactive art and groundbreaking technology programs. From 12:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m. there will be opportunities to network along with a panel discussion of technology influencers of Louisville which includes Paige Battcher from Kistmet Ideas, Raechele Gray from 1804, Clay Cook from Clay Cook Photography, Jabril Goodner from Art World among others.

Followed by performances from the likes of Apalatin, Stanliv, Vonda, Picasso Cleezy, Dom B & Rommel from 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. with additional names added daily. As you listen to the artists and explore Louisville’s best food trucks, live paintings, multiple art exhibits and vendors all at one location.

A portion of all the proceeds will go toward the Americana Community Centers Youth programming to fund their resources for creative technology such as computers, cameras, iPads and, software.

The VIPP Report: Area promoters unite to create the Louisville 502 Shutdown

SOME OF THE HOTTEST PROMOTERS IN LOUISVILLE HIT A HOME RUN BY TEAMING UP TO CREATE A WEEKEND TO SHOW UNITY AND THEIR POSITIVE INFLUENCE IN THE COMMUNITY

(Louisville, KY) The entertainment scene in Louisville is growing by leaps and bounds from concerts, celebrities after-parties, galas, Kentucky Derby to community events.  With the growth in 2018, comes a sense of pride from entertainment promoters to outdo themselves every time to give their strong support system of followers and guests a unique experience.

Imagine if all the promoters would come together to create and show a united front because they are the trendsetters in the community and they have the influence to set the standard.  So, on September 15th and 16th ten Louisville-based promoters will team up for the “Louisville 502 Shutdown”. This is a major collaboration of Big Don MJ, The Gentlemen of Dream Team, Keys2KY, BHen Entertainment, Elite Society, Southside Entertainment, DJ Equip, FAO, Lil Wayne and JRock Entertainment, and B. Smith Entertainment. 

The weekend kicks off at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, (KCAAH) located at 1701 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd for their Louisville 502 Shutdown Day Party.  Each promoter’s fanbase will start at KCAAH with three rooms to party from 5:00 pm to 10 :00 pm.

The DJ schedule is just as impressive.  Promoters has assembled a dynamic roster of party starters.  You can see them around the city in their particular club and/or major event.  Many have garnered regional and national attention for their skills and five of them will work the day party to get the weekend started.  DJ Samosa, DJ Butter, DJ Lil Jerry, DJ Kaos, and Rockstar Renegade will party until the sun goes down.  Then your 502 Shutdown experience moves.  Two different venues but both guaranteed to have you dancing late into the night.

Some will head to The Hideout at 934 Baxter Ave while others will go to Cole’s Place at Kentucky Street for their official after-parties. DJ Knitti, DJ Lil Jerry, and Hype man Face will be at Cole’s and DJ Cam and DJ Znyce will be at The Hideout.

To conclude their grand slam weekend, on Sunday, September 16th at MVP Sports Bar, 5011 Poplar Level Road. DJ Phats, DJ Lil Jerry, Rockstar Renegade and DJ Eb will wrap up the collaboration as you enjoy their music, food and watch a few games.

With the recent acts of violence in the community and today being the last day of school for Jefferson County Public School students, parents and guardians are scrambling to find events and activities for youth to attend.

On Thursday, May 25th at 10:00 am at Old Male High School, 911 S. Brook Street community and faith-based leaders will announce an event taking place this weekend. Leaders are buying up tickets to give to organizations and church groups to make sure youth have something safe to do on Memorial Day weekend.

The chaperoned event will be fun safe and will applaud the youth who are doing what their families, schools and community ask of them.

In conjunction with the announcement WLOU/104.7FM will do a marathon giveaway Thursday and Friday to make sure youth who want to attend that do not have the money will get to enjoy their first weekend on summer break.

Please join us for details of the event, the former University of Kentucky and University of Louisville players who’ve agreed to be a part of Saturday’s event and the community leaders who are stepping up to make sure our children have a place where they can be kids and not worry about their safety.

BREAKING BARRIERS SPOTLIGHT AWARDS WILL RECOGNIZE LEADERS IN THE COMMUNITY THAT ASSIST PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

The Metro Disability Coalition works tirelessly in the community to assist people with disabilities a better quality of life.  On Monday, March 20th from 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at the Rudd Heart and Lung Center, 201 Abraham Flexner Way it’s the 17th annual Breaking Barriers Spotlight Awards.  The awards ceremony will honor community service workers, educators and youth who go above and beyond the call of duty to assist those in need.

Refreshments will be served prior to the program so guests can network and obtain information from various organizations setup around the room.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Marques Maybin.  Marques is a successful radio sports personality in Louisville.  Prior to having his own show, he played with the University of Louisville’s men’s basketball team as their starting guard from 1997 to 2001.  In 2003, he was in a motorcycle accident in his hometown of Clarksville, TN that paralyzed him from the waist down.

Marcellus Mayes, President for Metro Disability Coalition says “It’s hard to believe we are in the 17th year of this celebration. The event is so special because we get the opportunity to recognize individuals for overcoming obstacles that they refused to call a disability. We will also get to salute and say thank you to those that helped with their independency.”

The Metro Disability Coalition is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization comprised of individuals and agencies in the Louisville Metro area.  The purpose is to give a better quality of life for people with disabilities.

The VIPP Report: Former NFL & U of L facility to give youth a leg up on the competition

(Louisville, KY) Super Student Athletes Inc. and their Executive Director Mario Urrutia will officially cut the ribbon to their new LIFE facility.  The ceremony will take place on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. located at 222 Eiler Avenue.

Community leaders and members that influenced Urrutia will be present to celebrate with the former NFL standout and University of Louisville football star.  Urrutia was drafted in 2008 by the Cincinnati Bengals.  He went on to play for the New York Jets and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also had a very successful career in arena football. In 2013, he was named AFL Rookie of the Year.  The Fern Creek High School graduate decided to return to Louisville to help those who helped him by giving back to his community.

The Super Student Athletes LIFE Center will provide opportunities for youth to learn a variety of lifetime skills focusing on education, community and healthy living.

Urrutia says “My passion is assisting the total athlete from academics to being the best YOU, both on and off the field.  I’m passionate about giving youth a fighting chance to be successful.  It’s really hard for many to concentrate literally on anything because of their particular circumstances.  I have created a safe haven where they can achieve with no distractions because everyone at the LIFE Center all have the same goal and that’s to be successful.”

The program will begin promptly at 11:00 am and will last approximately an hour followed by a tour.

Also on Friday, January 20th, at 6:00 p.m. also at the LIFE Center, there will be a private cocktail event to thank our sponsors and potential donors for their support. Local media outlets are invited to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony and cocktail event. Please confirm your attendance so can accommodate you properly.
