The VIPP Report: Two more people working in the food industry diagnosed with Hepatitis A in Louisville

The Louisville Metro Health Department just released that two additional businesses have an employee working in local food service establishments have been diagnosed with Hepatitis A.

Here’s the information they just released:

  • An employee of the Kroger store at 520 N 35th St. Customers who shopped at the store from March 2-19 may have been exposed to the hepatitis A virus.
  • An employee of Sarino restaurant at 1030 Goss Ave. Customers who ate at the restaurant from February 24 through March 15 may have been exposed to the hepatitis A virus.

Symptoms of hepatitis A are fatigue, decreased appetite, stomach pain, nausea, darkened urine, pale stools and jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes). People can become ill 15 to 50 days after being exposed to the virus. Customers experiencing symptoms should seek medical attention.

Hepatitis A is usually transmitted by putting something in your mouth such as an object, food or drink, which has been in contact with the feces of an infected person. In November, the Kentucky Department for Public Health declared a statewide hepatitis A outbreak. To date there have been 159 cases diagnosed in Louisville.

“The best ways to prevent hepatitis A infection are to get vaccinated and to practice good hand washing,” said Dr. Lori Caloia, medical director. “Washing your hands thoroughly and often with warm water and soap, especially before preparing meals or eating, after using the bathroom or changing a diaper is a proven way to prevent the spread of diseases. Hand sanitizer is not effective against hepatitis A.”

“We are vaccinating employees at both locations to protect them and prevent the further spread of the disease,” added Dr. Caloia. “And Kroger is donating 100 doses of the vaccine to assist with curtailing the outbreak. We encourage other businesses to either donate vaccine or immunize their employees against hepatitis A,” said Dr. Caloia.

“As we approach a very fun and busy spring season in Louisville,” Caloia added, “we are encouraging all food service establishments to be vigilant in emphasizing good hygiene and sanitation practices. We also encourage food service workers to get vaccinated.”

People who wish to get the hepatitis A vaccine should see their doctor or primary care provider. The vaccine is also available at Kroger Little Clinics and pharmacies, as well as Walgreens, Rite Aid and the University of Louisville Pharmacy, 550 S. Jackson St. The hepatitis A vaccination is covered by most insurance plans.

Food service establishments wishing to provide hepatitis A vaccine for their employees can contact Dr. Ruth Carrico at the University of Louisville Global Health Center at 502-852-1324. You can pay for and designate vaccine for your employees at their walk-in clinic, or, if you have 20 or more employees, the clinic nurses can come to your site.

(Louisville, KY) THE FLEUR DE FLEA, one of Louisville’s largest outdoor flea markets announces a new event where you can enjoy great food that will tickle your palette with a southern flair along with some great local entertainment. You are invited to come down to Waterfront Park in downtown Louisville for the inaugural FOODIE FLEA.  The event will be held on Saturday, April 14th from 11:00 am-5:00 pm and admission is FREE.

Then on Sunday, April 15th from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm many of the food trucks that participated in the FOODIE FLEA will park at various shelters throughout the city to feed the homeless as part of Mayor Greg Fischer’s “Give A Week”, a Week of Service where the community keeps a tally of their acts of compassion

The FOODIE FLEA, with over 25 of Louisville’s Finest Food trucks will be held in conjunction with THE FLEUR DE FLEA.

Three local craft breweries: Great Flood, Apocalypse and Country Boy will be sponsoring the event and serving their local beer all day.

“Top Chef” announces they are setting up shop in Lexington, Kentucky and will visit several cities in the Commonwealth including Louisville

With four episodes still ahead for the hit show “Top Chef” are now going where it’s never gone before.  Do you think that’s odd that they took distinguishable theme from “Star Trek”.  Weird or is it?  The science fiction television series’ main character was Captain Kirk played by Actor William Shatner.  He currently lives in Versailles, Kentucky near Lexington on a horse farm he owns.  So, it appears that Shatner and the show will be neighbors for a while.

“Top Chef” is heading to Lexington, Kentucky for Season 16.  The show will have a new batch of cheftestants battle it out for the coveted title of Top Chef with the thriving culinary scenes of Louisville, Lexington, and Lake Cumberland serving as the backdrop. Plus, with the Bluegrass State’s culinary traditions of bourbon and barbecue, this is sure to be the tastiest season of Top Chef yet.

So you better believe we’re excited to see what awesomeness Kentucky brings to Top Chef in Season 16. “We are always looking for rising culinary destinations and are looking forward to planting our flag in Kentucky and soaking up a diverse region of the country that we haven’t yet explored on Top Chef,” Shari Levine, Executive Vice President, Current Production, Bravo Media, said in a statement. “Kentucky has a strong food identity and we know our incoming chefs will be inspired by the bourgeoning culinary scene, known for its innovative takes on Southern cuisine, melding flavors, and use of Kentucky’s agricultural bounty.”

The VIPP Report: 5th Annual African Heritage Festival kicks off in Louisville on August 25th

A Celebration of Unity, Art, Culture, & History Across the African Diaspora

The 5th Annual African Heritage Festival will be held in various locations around the city of Louisville Friday, August 25th through Sunday August 27th.  The event celebrates unity, culture, art and history across the African Diaspora.

The festival is hosted by Bridge Kids International, the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage (KCAAH), the Kentucky Old School Sports Association (KOSSA), HoneyTree Publishing, and Moments to Remember.

The African Heritage Festival is organized by a dynamic team representing a variety of countries and backgrounds. The whole city is invited to this unifying event that will be fun, educational, and certainly full of flavor. Last year’s festival drew approximately 2000 participants, and with this year’s new additions, we only anticipate that the celebration will continue to grow.

Opening Ceremony — Friday, August 25th – Kentucky Center for African American Heritage:

Opening Ceremony will kick off the weekend with a reception and program honoring African heritage, culture, history and art.

Festival Day — Saturday, August 26th

The African Heritage Festival will be a joyous event for the whole family with great food, music, dance, sports, theater, fashion, cultural demonstrations, children’s activities, resources for healthy living and so much more. What a great way to honor African, African-American and Caribbean cultures in Louisville and add to the revitalization efforts in the historic Russell neighborhood. All activities are free and open to the public. Some highlights include:

  • 8:00am: Soccer Tournament Begins – Champions Park, 2050 River Road soccer tournament held at Champions Park, organized by KOSSA, featuring 10 teams from at least 5 states with players representing 20 countries of origin
  • 10:00am:  Parade Begins – a parade of marching bands, dance teams, bicycle groups, community organizations and more down Muhammad Ali Blvd. starting at 9th Street and ending at 18th Street where the festival will take place in front of the KCAAH
  • 10:00am – 12:00pm: the widely beloved Books & Breakfast!
  • 11:00am: Festival activities begin and will feature live entertainment, “Under the Story Tree” storytelling fest, and other children’s activities. Food, merchandise and informational vendors from across the city and the surrounding region will be in attendance.
  • 12:00pm: Basketball tournament begins – a street basketball tournament presented by KOSSA and the organizers of the Dirt Bowl
  • 12:00pm – 5:00pm: A how-to fair with community members teaching useful and fun things
  • 7:00pm: Festival ends

 Sunday, August 27th – Invoke… Called by the Ancestors (performance begins 2:30 pm)

This year, we are excited to announce that a third day will be incorporated into the festival! Please come out on Sunday, August 27th for “Invoke … Called by the Ancestors” performed by Sankofa Dance Theater. The Baltimore based dance company presents world-class, authentic African art in the form of dance, music, and folkways for national and international audiences. Sankofa Dance Theater’s work is rooted in healing and bringing intercultural understanding to the global village while staying true to the definition of the word “Sankofa” — which means to learn from the past in an effort to build for the future. The show will begin promptly at 2:30pm and will feature a special appearance by spoken word artists Hannah Drake and Tytianna Wells smith –performing A Mother’s Tears. Tickets for Sunday’s are available on Eventbrite and at Better Days Records West (Lyles Mall). Proceeds will go towards the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage. We would like to thank The Brown Forman Foundation, The Louisville Convention and Visitors Bureaus, and Metro Louisville for sponsoring this event, and their dedication to making world renowned talent accessible to the larger community.

The African Heritage Festival was founded in 2013 when Bridge Kids International approached KCAAH about hosting the event at the Center as a way to build relationships among and celebrate Louisville’s African Diaspora. In four years, the event has grown from a mostly indoor event to a street festival and has more than doubled in size. Bridge Kids continues to coordinate the overall planning, but the African Heritage Festival has truly become the pride of all of the presenting organizations, planning committee, participants and volunteers.

Bridge Kids International is a Louisville, KY based global non-profit organization helping young people of Africa and the African Diaspora, aged 13-25, unleash their social entrepreneurial spirits to solve economic development, education, environmental, girls’ rights, and health challenges and build sustainable communities.  Bridge Kids operates from a belief that the interaction between culture, community, and connection leads to healing, restoration, and the evolution of individuals and communities.  BKI is rooted in African heritage culture, works to build communities that nurture young people, and seeks to strengthen relationships across Africa and the African Diaspora. The Kentucky Center for African American Heritage’s (KCAAH) mission is to enhance the public’s knowledge about the history, heritage and cultural contributions of African Americans in Kentucky. In addition to its commitment to preserving the traditions and accomplishments of the past, the Center is a vital, contemporary institution, providing space for cultural programs, exhibitions and performances of all types. The VIPP Report: TheSlice, a signature Kentucky Derby Festival event in West Louisville will remember the “Greatest of All Time”

(Louisville, KY) When you think of the Kentucky Derby you think of food, bourbon, horses and parties.  Well, TheSlice Charities of Louisville, the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage and PNC Bank proudly present TheSlice @KCAAH.  TheSlice-Spice, Style & Soul on Saturday, April 29th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.  This year’s theme: A Salute to Muhammad Ali: A Life of Inspiration.  The event will be held at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, located in the heart of West Louisville at 1701 West Muhammad Ali Blvd named after the Greatest of All Time, Muhammad Ali.

For the first time, guests will get to see an exhibit of the late heavy weight champion.  Ali died on June 3, 2016 and the world turned to Louisville, KY as his family, friends and fans sent him off in a champions way.  Throughout the venue you will see a special collection. In the historical procession of Ali through the streets of Louisville the champ did pass KCAAH and the staff thought it was appropriate to have debut his photo exhibit at TheSlice.

“We are excited to have one of Ali’s family members as a special guest”, said Hosea Mitchell, KCAAH’s Chief Operating Officer.  Ibn Ali, son of Rahmaan Ali and nephew of Muhammad.  Ibn is excited and honored to attend TheSlice on behalf of his family. He’s started a program at the Jewish Community Center in Louisville around June.  Additional details will provide in the coming weeks.

TheSlice is the only West Louisville event sanctioned by Kentucky Derby Festival.  Chefs, caterers and restaurants from all over the city will give guests a sample of their cuisine.  Guests walk around the venue and visit food stations and sample their signature dishes. Throughout the evening, guests will enjoy music provided by The Unlimited Band.

Tickets are $65.00 in advance and $75.00 day of event at the venue.  This event is for people 21 years old and up. The Derby Festival is an independent community organization supported by 4,000 volunteers, 400 businesses and civic groups, Pegasus Pin sponsorships and event participation.  It entertains more than 1.5 million people annually. This involvement has made the Festival the largest single attended event in Kentucky and one of the leading community celebrations in the world.

THE NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT WILL SHINE BRIGHT ON SUPERCHEFS AND ITS UNIQUE MENU TONIGHT ON THE COOKING CHANNEL

(Louisville, KY) Louisville entrepreneur and owner of one of the most notable restaurants in Louisville is profiled on a national scale.  Darnell “SuperChef” Ferguson will make an appearance on the Cooking Channel’s Cheap Eats tonight, January 26th at 10:00 p.m. (EST).  SuperChef will be a part of the Cream of the Crop episode hosted by Ali Khan.

Khan travelled to Louisville several weeks ago and visited several eateries including SuperChefs.  The dish that Darnell chose to showcase was his Southern fried chicken and sweet potato waffles.

Darnell Ferguson says “We are only 26 days into the new year and things are in full swing from business to welcoming my son Legend Ali last week to launching the Stop the Violence initiative where local non-profit organizations receive a portion of the sales on a designated day.  I’ve also received other television opportunities so stay tuned for details.  I would like to thank everyone for their continued support it means the world to me as I continue to work hard in business and in the community.”
