The VIPP Report: Being nominated for Most Admired Woman by Today’s Woman Magazine

When I was contacted by Today’s Woman Magazine I had mixed emotions. – shocked to even be nominated even though no one knows anything about me.

People have no idea that I’ve worked in the media for almost 27 years.

When teachers told my graduating class that we would likely have to start at a smaller market to get your experience and then work your way back to your hometown. I beat those odds and jumped straight to my hometown of Louisville. I was hired part-time as an associate director. Working crazy hours, weekends and holidays. All while I worked in a new healthcare division full time and attending graduate school obtaining two master’s degrees.

I’ve worked in just about every position behind the scenes. Receiving several award nominations for floor directing and my camera work for some of the biggest news events in Louisville. I had the opportunity to first produce/coordinate the very first forum where community leaders said some 20 years ago that Louisville was ready for a professional team. Many of the same believers in that idea are still believing in the vision today and its moving in the right direction. I believe there will be a farm team that’s affiliated with an NBA team who will make Louisville their home first. Those players, when developed, will be called up to team.

After proving I could produce I went from production to the newsroom where I had the opportunity to write and produce some of the biggest stories of our lifetime like 9-11. Then I was recruited away in 2003 to WHAS11. I started off as a producer but later moved to the assignment desk.

I had an opportunity to start one of the first webcasts in the area about entertainment and community news that you did not see on the air. I took the challenge upon myself to help promote people and events. My original concept was to find national figures throughout the world that had Kentucky ties. That helped me create that niche in the market and The411 with Sherlene Shanklin was born.

In 2018, the Society of Professional Journalists announced my story about the NBA as their Best Sports Writing piece of the Year. I also won Best Use of Social Media for Louisville’s own Bryson Tiller announcing his national tour and pop-up concert series. In 2017, I was nominated for an Emmy Award for the coverage of Muhammad Ali’s memorial coverage.

After, first using web-based and social media platforms to promote my stories. I had the opportunity to go on air. There was only a few stories out there at the time but now the table has turned and dozens of stories are developed with the emphasis on “did you know that person is from Kentucky?”

Can you believe it all started from an idea and now it has flourished into its own standalone brand. My primary job at WHAS11, an ABC Affiliate is the assignment desk. In a nutshell I’m reading and/or listening to all of the story ideas, news tips and helping develop the story.

Even if the story doesn’t make air I still try and assist as many people as I can with their problems.

So, no I’m not new to the area. Some people consider me as the go-to in the community when they need assistance. Even if I can’t assist, I try to lead then in the right direction to get assistance. Once I think we can do the story. I consult with the reporter I believe has the sources and passion to get the story done.

While working around the clock in the media. It gave me other opportunities to help people. Once the demand was so real I started VIPP Communications. It’s a one-stop public relations, branding, marketing, special events and video production firm.

Then The VIPP Report was created so I could have a platform to talk about clients. Then through supply and demand everyone wanted to know where I purchased my jewelry, so I created VIPP Style an online accessory store.

So, to be nominated as “Most Admired” by the magazine is simply humbling. I’ve worked so hard for so long that I didn’t think anyone was noticing. I’ve chosen not one but multiple fields that are highly competitive. When no one wanted to help me, I created and developed what others would not give me a chance to do. To now receiving calls for assistance simply brings me to tears. This was not an overnight, an instant potato career. I’ve been moving mountains my entire adulthood and making ways out of no way.

I still have a lot more to accomplish because I’m never satisfied but to know others are watching and acknowledging that I’m on their radar lets me know that a real breakthrough is just around the corner. This is a little bit about me and what I do. I will be sharing more in the future about my journey, who I work with and why I refuse to lose.

The VIPP Report: Bumble, An International Social Media Platform to Honor #FirstMovers in Kentucky Through #BlackWomenBuilt Event

On Saturday, March 16th, eight African American women from Kentucky will be honored by Bumble through Bumble Bizz and Freedom of Priss (FOP) at Flavour lounge at a private dinner. Dinner will be followed by a celebration open to the public that will start at 9 pm. These women are being celebrated for being business owners or leaders in their fields, which include fashion, media, marketing, psychology, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Founders of Freedom of Priss, LaPrecious Brewer and Joelle Robinson want to acknowledge these business heroes and shed light on the impact that they have made in their communities. FOP will also use their unique stories to serve as empowering examples for younger minority women through a series of social media campaigns that will be ongoing.

Among the women being honored are Aryea Kolubah, fashion designer who recently had her gown featured on HBO and Vogue, Sherlene Shanklin, multimedia editor for WHAS11 and owner of VIPP Communications and Braea Tilford, former Miss Kentucky USA and founder of Grow Lead Inspire; a conference that enriches young women. Councilwoman Jessica Green will also be in attendance to honor these women for their myriad accomplishments. (Full list of honorees below.)

The Freedom of Priss is a platform created by LaPrecious Brewer and Joelle Robinson that enriches and empowers women to be their most authentic and bold self, to achieve their ideal of success in relationships, careers and in the community. For years, society has placed great emphasis on HIStory and there is no finer time than the present to invite women from diverse backgrounds to share her story. This platform seeks to energize women to move into their purpose while gaining knowledge and insight from one another through personal discussions on the highs and lows of being our true selves and achieving our goals. FOP will begin hosting a series of events, printed materials and online content to foster a sisterhood of authentic women and help them to achieve their personal goals that they seek to meet.

As you sing that song in your head, just think in May you can sing it along with them. RBRM: Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky and Mike will hit the road, 4 The Love of It Tour. The legendary multi-platinum R & B stars will be at the Louisville Palace Thursday, May 23, 2019 at 8 p.m.

Can you believe that New Edition’s Ronnie DeVoe, Bobby Brown, Ricky Bell, and Michael Bivins have performed for over four decades? One of the pioneers in the boy band era basically changing the landscape of popular music. The VIPP Report: The first African American to reach the rank of colonel in the U.S. will be honored during a flag and plaque ceremony

A plaque ceremony and flag installation will be held the FIRST African American to hold the rank of “Colonel” in the U.S. Army and Buffalo Soldier from Kentucky

The ceremony will be held at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage in West Louisville

On Sunday, February 24, 2019, the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, (KCAAH) in partnership with The National Coalition of Black Veteran Organizations presents Colonel Charles Young the Epitome of Leadership. As we near the end of Black History Month, we invite you to attend the installation of the 9^th Calvary Regiment Flag and plaque ceremony for Colonel Charles Young.

Col. Young was born a slave in 1864 in Mason County, Kentucky. He was one of the first African Americans to graduate from the United States Military Academy at West Point and the first black colonel in the U.S. Army. He also served as a member of the 9^th Calvary also known as the Buffalo Soldiers. Young died in Liberia in 1922.

The ceremony will be from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at KCAAH which is located at 1701 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd. During the program Brian Shellum, author of three books about the life of Colonel Charles Young will speak during the program. His focus will be Col. Young’s challenging missions during his 30 years on active duty. Also, a part of the ceremony will be Charles Blatcher III, chairman for the National Coalition of Black Veteran Organizations, (NCBVO). His angle will be NCBVO advocacy on behalf of Colonel Young and his importance to Black Military History and Black History Month.

The VIPP Report: Louisville church surpasses the silver and gold anniversaries and now Mount Olive hits a historic number of 119 years

Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church

(Louisville, KY) There’s only been three pastors who’ve served at the helm of Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church. On Sunday, February 24, 2019 the church will celebrate it’s 119^th anniversary.

The anniversary will begin at 9:30 a.m. for Sunday School, followed by morning worship at 11:00 a.m. featuring the Anniversary Reunion Choir and Rev. Chris Hagan, pastor of Second Baptist Church of Owenton, Ky.

Dinner will be served. Following dinner, members and guests will return to the sanctuary at 3:00 p.m. for a special tribute for our retiring pastor Rev. Shanklin.

Shanklin, only the third pastor after 119 years has served 35 years as pastor and on Easter Sunday he will preach his last sermon at Mt. Olive.

The church along with our family life center is located on several acres on East Kentucky Street.

Spring into love with an Evening of Soul with R & B superstars Charlie Wilson and Patti LaBelle along with special guest El DeBarge.

The trio will perform at the KFC Yum! Center on Saturday, April 6th. Doors open at 6:00 pm and the concert will begin at 7:00 pm.

The last time, I attended a concert of Wilson his stage performance was second to none. The high energy show moved with dancers and a band for over 50 minutes.

You would expect to pay a lot of money to see these artists are definitely getting a deal with it only costing you between $42 and $125 dollars.

PREPARING AREA YOUTH TO BE THE GREATEST IN THE ARTS ARENA WITH A NEW THEATER ALONG THE MUHAMMAD ALI ARTS, CULTURE AND INNOVATION DISTRICT

LCCC RAISES ROOF FOR GRAND LYRIC THEATER

Louisville Central Community Centers, the developer of the Muhammad Ali Boulevard Arts, Culture and Innovation District, is constructing a performing arts facility to support its Kids Art Academy and the continued development of the district at its’ Old Walnut Street Development at 1300 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd.

On Friday, February 15, 2019 at 10:00 am there will be a roof raising ceremony with key stakeholders in the community, LCCC and advocators to bring Muhammad Ali Blvd back to life will be in attendance to lend their support. Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer, Councilwoman Barbara Sexton Smith, an arts enthusiast, former Councilman David Tandy, Fund for the Arts’ CEO, Christen Boone, and representatives of the Norton Foundation and the Gheens Foundation all have confirmed their participation in the ceremony. Representatives of the LCCC Kids Art Academy, the Tiny Tykes Theater Troupe and the Youth Repertory Theater Troupe of Louisville will perform to celebrate this achievement.

During the era between 1940-60’s, there was a theatre that was considered the hub where artists showcased their talents, which many went on to become professional entertainers performing alongside entertainment legends like Helen Hune, the jazz and blues singer with Count Basie’s band. So, in 2019 we will revitalize the name The Grand Theater and Lyric Theater on historic Old Walnut Street in Louisville, KY in hopes of bringing life back into the arts and the community with a rich history in arts and entertainment.

The 300-seat Grand Lyric Theater will be home to LCCC’s Kids Art Academy (KAA), a youth arts education program with a focus on all facets of performing arts for over three decades. KAA currently serves hundreds of school-age youth annually and has produced theater troupe sell-out productions of “Broadway-quality” musicals as “Beauty and The Beast”, “Black Nativity”, “A Christmas Carol”, “Once On This Island” and the nationally acclaimed show, “The Wiz.”. This state-of-the art facility will also serve as another venue for community groups to use for training, rehearsals and performances.

National experts from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) of Washington, DC endorsed LCCC’s economic revitalization vision by recommending to our community that Muhammad Ali Blvd. between 6^th to 21^st Streets be transformed into a cultural arts commercial district to help create a vibrant corridor that supports economic development and job creation west of Ninth Street. This plan aligns itself with what used to be the historic Walnut Street (now known as Muhammad Ali Blvd.) between 6^th to 15^th Streets, an area once the commercial heart of the black community that contained thriving businesses, professional offices, restaurants and entertainment venues prior to the razing of the commercial district by an urban renewal plan in the 1960s. This plan has been included with support of Louisville Metro and Louisville Metro Housing Authority as an important part of the transformation of Russell.

Partial funding has been provided by U. S. Housing & Urban Development through its community development block grant to the city of Louisville and a number of private sources. To complete the theater, additional sponsorship and naming opportunities are available to support:

VIPP Special Report: How 10-year-old Seven Bridges death is now bringing awareness to so many who don’t understand the consequences that bullying brings

The heartbreak a community is feeling because a child dies a tragic death because he was suffering in silence

Shanklin, an assignment editor with more than 25 years in the broadcast field for the station took the mother’s call in September 2018 while heading into work. In a rare and raw account which is hardly done she reflects on when she took both calls about Seven Bridges.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The story of Seven Bridges is making headlines not only in Louisville but nationwide after the 10-year-old committed suicide on Saturday for alleged bullying. I have to use alleged because this will likely be determined in the court of law.

I spoke to the mother Tami Charles Saturday evening after returning from out of town. I had received numerous texts wanting to know what happened to Charles’ son. I had no idea because I was traveling and could not be distracted due to extremely heavy rain.

When I got back to Louisville, I reached out to her because I knew the backstory. I didn’t expect for her to answer my text message for weeks but later that evening she responded. We texted a couple of times and then my phone rang it was Charles. She told me what happened all we could do was cry together over the phone. I got off wondering, “What else could I have done?” “What can I do now?” “Why didn’t someone say something?”

To hear the hurt but strength of a mother on the same day she lost her child made my heart drop into my stomach. What do you say? It’s not about getting the story. I didn’t move into this community. I grew up in this community. I know the names, the faces, the unsung heroes, and the sacrifices many do day in and day out and never get a day of media coverage. I chose to stay to help and support those who needed a voice but all I could do was listen to this mother. What could I say to comfort a grieving mother who knew something was going on but couldn’t stop it?

I walked and cried and cried and walked, all night until my family had to ask if there was anything they could do. They know I keep my work close to the vest and private and I never include them to keep my journalistic integrity. Frankly, if I told them some things, they could not erase the image from their minds. Some stories develop while others do not, but I still assist and work for an answer with as many as I can even on my off days.

My main job is to get the story out of people. Whether they are yelling at me because of their situation, their frustration and/or confusion on how to express what they are thinking and/or feeling. My task is to translate their thoughts and get to the core of the situation.

A mentor taught me a long time ago that you need to listen to the details they are in there just listen. Then, ask follow up questions to make sure I’m understanding them correctly. If I can’t understand the story, I can’t get our team to understand the importance.

With this burden on my heart and mind, I did reach out to the reporter that helped with the story in September 2018. We talked about it. We agreed not to talk to Charles about doing an interview. There was no rush since we were the only ones who did the initial story on Seven. When she along with her husband were ready they would let us know.

Then when Charles mentioned that insurance would not pay for her son’s funeral we decided that we needed to do something. That’s when we asked them to do the interview.

Reporter Heather Fountaine and I also said we wanted her to talk to anyone who could help her get the needed funds to bury her only child. Actually, her miracle child because Charles thought she was not able to have children, but she was blessed to have Seven.

Because Seven’s death was a suicide we did not think she would get a lot of coverage. Fountaine and I had to move faster than any of us wanted too, but thinking we spoke to the family during the trying time we needed to see it through and worked all weekend on our days off.

Let me take you back to September 2018 when the mother was trying to help her child when no one else thought it was anything until the untimely death of Seven on Saturday, January 19, 2019.

Charles reached out to me in September and explained to me what her child was going through and as a mother she needed to find a way to help her son. They loved the school but felt like the process might have been broken when it came to the notification process.

What the mother didn’t know that I was having a bad day, running late for work and was literally stuck in traffic at 2:30 p.m. in the middle of the day. But when I saw Charles’ name on my caller ID I knew I needed to answer. She said she was having a problem and wanted to get the word out. I explained to her that I was in traffic and as soon as I got to work I would begin looking into it. As soon as we hung up, I went to work. I called my newsroom and asked them to pull the video, so we could review it as soon as I walked in and asked others to listen as well, so we could make a decision. (Our evening meetings are at 3:00 pm, so if i wanted them to try and get all of the elements before the end of business we didn’t have much time or I would have to hold the story for consideration the next day.)

In Charles’ video, which has 38,000 views and more than 1,100 shares. She expressed sincere concern for her child’s well-being. Charles alleged her son was choked and verbally abused racially and no action was taken nor was she told of the incident even though her child was elementary school age. She used the words bullied. She also said several times that they loved the school, but it needed to change its procedure of alerting parents when situations like this occur. I went into the meeting and explained the situation and that the mother wanted to address the procedure and the time frame in which a parent is notified so that the child does not continue to go through a situation alone but with a support team.

The Kentucky Dept of Education defines “bullying” as any unwanted verbal, physical, or social behavior among students that involves a real or perceived power imbalance and is repeated or has the potential to be repeated: 1. That occurs on school premises, on school-sponsored transportation, or at a school-sponsored event; or 2. That disrupts the education process.

This incident met the criteria. We sat down with Charles and her 10-year-old son Seven Bridges. The reporter was very sensitive to the situation but asked the hard questions and the mother and child answered freely.

When the team came back to the station, they were so surprised of the maturity of the fifth grader and his level of forgiveness.

In our September 2018 interview Bridges said, “I know that I can get it out of my mind, and tomorrow is like a better day, so I can still make friends with him.”

Charles also in that interview said she would like to see the school’s administration held accountable and more racial sensitivity training within the school system.

The school system said in September 2018 that the incident was under official investigation.

Presently, the district is opening a full investigation. The parents of Seven Bridges say they will file a lawsuit.

Now, the grieving parents have to find a way to bury their child. Again, they have insurance but when a person commits suicide it is not covered under the policy. So, they have started a Go Fund Me page entitled: Rest in Paradise Seven Bridges if you would like to donate, go to https://www.gofundme.com/rest-in-paradise-seven-bridges.

The community is rallying around the family be using the words “Seven Strong” – this is to bring awareness of bullying of any kind so that no other family has to go through this traumatic situation because unfortunately Seven was suffering in silence.

There’s a phrase that’s commonly used: “If I can just save one person, then I did my job.”

I will never use that phrase again because the one person I thought I helped I could not save but I hope my efforts and Seven’s memory will not go in vain.

The VIPP Report: Louisville restaurant named top 12 breakfasts in the country

The Cooking Channel’s Man’s Greatest Food will tackle who has the greatest breakfasts in the country. Of course, a Louisville restaurant is on that list especially when you reference anything that mentions the “GREATEST”. Can you guess who’s on that list? Host Roger Mooking chose “Superchefs” owned by Darnell “Superchef” Ferguson located at 1702 Bardstown Road right in the heart of the Highlands.

Mooking visited chefs all across the U.S. and went into their kitchens to learn about their top dishes and some of the secrets behind it. The show did visit Superchefs and they ranked the restaurant on their 12 greatest breakfasts list. Mooking was looking for the best combinations of eggs, gravy, breakfast meat and fried dough. You could put a check mark next to each one of those criteria when it comes to Superchefs Louisville.

Ferguson says “What a way to start the year by being placed in this prestigious ranking for breakfast. I won the Thanksgiving challenge in November of last year. It just gives me the confidence that the restaurant caters to any taste bud you may have. Stop by and tryout some of the fantastic items we have on the menu. This is really shaping up to be a great year for myself and Team Superchefs”.

The VIPP Report: Celebrating the Legacy of Black Louisville and the influences that still resonate in the consciousness of the community

It’s a tradition that many automatically put on their calendars from year to year because when you attend the celebration hosted by Legacies Unlimited Inc. you walk away realizing that so many that grew up in this community made history in so many ways especially in the entertainment industry. On January 25^th & 26^th, they will be remembered and celebrated for their outstanding accomplishments. It’s all about Celebrating the Legacy of Black Louisville. It will be held at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, (KCAAH) located at 1701 West Muhammad Ali Blvd.

This event pays tribute to the achievements and contributions that Louisville’s African American citizens have made to Louisville, the nation and the world.

The program will consist of exhibits, workshops and two performance events. It’s the JAZZ AT THE TOP HAT. A re-imagined night out at the Top Hat Club, Black Louisville’s most famous entertainment spot during the glory days of the 1940’s and 50’s. This event will present jazz vocalist, Bobby J and will feature International flutist and Jazz historian Galen Abdur Razzo.

The second event is The Walnut Street Revue, a live stage show reminiscent of the “chitlin circuit” performances that played in venues on Walnut Street, now Muhammad Ali Blvd., in the 1940’s & 50’ when Walnut Street was in vogue. The revue will be hosted by WLKY’s Ann Bowdan. The evening will be filled with great music presented The Jerry Tolson Jazz Group with vocalists Alisia and Karen Chavez.

A special tribute will be paid to the late Foree Wells, a Louisville musician who played with some of the greatest blues performers in the business, which included —music legend the late B.B. King. Wells, also founded the Walnut Street Blues Band which included his two sons and a daughter in law. The Walnut Street Rhythm & Blues Band will be in attendance that evening and will perform a special tribute in memory of their beloved father, Foree Wells.

The Opening Ceremony will take place from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm on Friday, January 25^th followed by an unveiling of the exhibits. The exhibits included in this year’s program include the following: Two Centuries of Black Louisville …the Exhibit – A permanent exhibit of photographs from the book Two Centuries of Black Louisville —A Photographic History; Textile Designs by Louisville’s “Bag Lady” – Zephyr May Miller; and The Works of Louisville Folk Artist, Marvin Finn plus much more.

There will be two workshops held on Saturday, January 26^th. The first one, The Legacy of Central High School from 10:00 am to 11:30 am. It’s an investigative look at the historical significance and impact that Central had on its students and the community as well. Come learn about the legacy that this educational institution created over the years through the lens of Dr. Larry Wilkins Doyle, a 1968 CHS graduate whose did his doctoral studies on the historic school. The second workshop will be The Listening Room Workshop. It will present recordings of Louisville’s African American entertainers & musicians of the 50’s, 60’s & 70’s. These selections will be provided by the Soulful Sounds of Derbytown and presented by Ron Lewis of Mr. Wonderful Productions.

Celebrating the Legacy of Black Louisville is presented by Legacies Unlimited in partnership with the KCAAH and the University of Louisville Archives & Special Collections. It is made possible through support from the Owsley Brown II Family Foundation, WLKY-TV and George & Mary Lee Fischer.

The VIPP Report: B2K Reunites and announces tour dates and Louisville is on the schedule

They announced just before the holidays the would reunite and go on tour along with some of their friends. Well now, I have the date for Louisville for Omarion, Boog, Fizz and Raz-B also known as B2K.

The multi-platinum R & B group will kick-off their tour in March 2019 and they will make a stop in Louisville as Kentucky Derby activities will be in full swing.

Save the date of Sunday, April 29^th at the KFC Yum! Center. The group is calling it “The Millennium Tour”. The will visit some 25 cities in the U.S. Louisville is a part of their limited engagement tour.

Their special guests for the concert will be Mario, Pretty Ricky, Lloyd, Ying Yang Twins, Chingy, and Bobby V.

The VIPP Report: Will the Academy have to replace Kevin Hart due to remarks made in 2009?

Just two days ago, Hollywood was all a buzz with the announcement of Kevin Hart serving as host of the 2019 Academy Awards. Just 48 hours later social media is buzzing in a negative way causing Hart to say that he does not want to be a distraction and he will step down as host.

It allegedly stems from social media postings dating back to 2009. Comedian Hart referenced the LGBTQ community in a negative manner. He was referring to an action his son did that Hart categorized as negative. The alleged anti-gay statement(s) (referenced alleged because they are no longer available for review) are commonly used in a despairing manner to anyone who identifies as a member of the community.

Hart apologized for the comments years ago and thought it was behind him but it was brought back to the forefront after he made his Oscar announcement.

Hart says he’s stepping down and giving up his life-long dream to host the Oscars but will the Academy make him honor the contract or accept it based on extenuating circumstances? Or will they help “right” the “wrong” and ask him to stay on? Hart went back on social media after his staff made him aware of what was being said. He referenced that he had apologized previously and that he had evolved and was going on 40. Stating that he had matured and was in a different place.

So, what should the Academy Awards do? Hart only stepped down from the hosting opportunity because he did not want to take away from the actors/actresses who’ve worked for this special moment to be overshadowed. Note, that’s a definite sign of maturity that he didn’t want to take the focus off the purpose of the celebration which is to honor those in the film industry for the hard work and dedication and likely the one shot many have to be nominated for an Oscar.

The Academy has not made a statement at this point but I will monitor and report when they do.

With a little over two months of planning left, will Hart rescind Thursday’s announcement or will the Academy scramble to find a new host?

The 91st Academy Awards will be held in Los Angeles, CA live on Sunday, February 24, 2019 on ABC.

The VIPP Report: Will he win the “Hart” of Oscar fans?

And the hosting duties of the 2019 Academy Awards goes to none other than comedian/actor Kevin Hart. The Academy did not get to make the announcement but the man with 64.9 million good friends also known as his Instagram followers received the “exclusive” announcement.

Hart announced Tuesday evening by posting an Oscar with the message saying “The day has finally come for me to host the Oscars. I am blown away simply because this has been a goal on my list for a long time….To be able to join the legendary list of host that have graced that stage is unbelievable.”

This is not the first time the academy asked Hart to be the host but Hart feels like this is the right time for him to take on this task and mark it off his bucket list.

He thanked his fans for their support and of course his close friends and family but what was so powerful was acknowledging his late mother by saying “I know my mom is smiling from ear to ear right now.”

The 91st Academy Awards will present some 20 plus awards for their artistic and technical merit in the film industry. You can see the show live on Sunday, February 24, 2019 on ABC.

(Louisville, KY) The West Louisville Performing Arts Academy (WLPAA) d.b.a. West Louisville Boys and West Louisville Girls Choirs, (WLBC/WLGC) announces their 19th Annual Hope Christmas Awards Dinner Concert on Saturday, December 1^st at the University Club on the University of Louisville’s Belknap Campus. The dinner concert will begin at 6:00 p.m.

This year’s McDaniel Bluitt Hope Award recipient is Manfred Reid. The current chairman for the West Louisville Performing Arts Academy. The Chairman of the Board of Commissioners for the Louisville Metro Housing Authority. In 2017, Mr. Reid received the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Award given by Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer. This year’s emcees will be husband and wife team, Entrepreneur and community leader Lacy and Barbara Sexton Smith, Metro Councilwoman for District 4.

History

West Louisville Boys Choir began in November 1990. The choir is directed by McDaniel Bluitt, a retired vocal music teacher with twenty-nine (29) years of experience. He received his B. M. ED. from the University of Louisville School Of Music and a Masters in Counseling from Western Kentucky University. The Boys Choir has performed throughout the commonwealth, for mayors, governors other national dignitaries. The Boys Choir’s first European Tour established international prominence in Paris, France and London, England. They received a superior rating during their first international music competition in the Bahamas. They were also awarded first place in the Music Festival at Sea.

The West Louisville Girls Choir made its debut in November 2002. The choir is directed by Mrs. Mamie Bluitt who received her B.M.ED. from the University of Louisville School of Music. The Girls Choir is also a performing choir. Some of its more notable performances are: Governor Patton’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration in Frankfort, Kentucky, ECHO, Women for Women Conference and at Cincinnati’s National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Their first Southwestern Tour to Texas was held in 2010.

The VIPP Report: Kroger Shooting Suspect Charged with Federal Hate Crimes and Firearm Offenses

Thursday, November 15, 2018

Gregory A. Bush, 51, was indicted today by a federal grand jury on hate crime and firearm charges arising out of the racially motivated murder of two African-American patrons at a Kroger grocery store, and the attempted murder of a third, on Oct. 24 in Jeffersontown, Kentucky. The indictment was announced by Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, Assistant Attorney General Eric Dreiband for the Civil Rights Division, U.S. Attorney Russell Coleman, and FBI Louisville Special Agent in Charge James Robert Brown, Jr.

Today’s indictment charges Bush with hate crimes for shooting and killing two victims because of their race and color; and for shooting at a third man because of his race and color. The indictment also charges Bush for using and discharging a firearm during and in relation to those crimes of violence. The indictment alleges that Bush committed the offenses after substantial planning and premeditation, that he killed more than one person in a single criminal episode, and that he knowingly created a grave risk of death to others on the scene.

The maximum penalty for the charges in the indictment is life imprisonment or the death penalty. The Justice Department will determine at a later date whether, in this particular case, it will seek the death penalty.

“The crimes alleged in this indictment are horrific,” Acting Attorney General Whitaker said. “We cannot and will not tolerate violence motivated by racism. We will bring the full force of the law against these and any other alleged hate crimes against fellow Americans of any race. And so I want to thank the FBI, Trial Attorney Christopher Perras, and Assistant United States Attorney Amanda Gregory for all of their hard work that has made this indictment possible. Today we take one step closer to justice for the victims and their families and one step closer to helping this community try to heal.”

“There is no place for hate-fueled violence in our community or Commonwealth,” stated U.S. Attorney Russell Coleman. “Federal, state, and local law enforcement stand united to ensure that Kentuckians can shop, worship, or attend school without the specter of fear.”

“The tragic events of October 24, 2018, are a grim reminder of why the FBI prioritizes investigations of civil rights violations among the top of its criminal programs,” said FBI Louisville Special Agent in Charge James Robert Brown, Jr. “Today’s indictment should be a reminder to those who are motivated by hate and are intent on committing violence; your hateful ideology will not have the last word. The FBI, and the Department of Justice, will be there, and you will be caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

“The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is committed to working with our law enforcement partners to ensure justice for the victims, their families and the Louisville community throughout the investigation and prosecution of this alleged, hate-filled and violent crime,” stated Stuart Lowrey, Special Agent in Charge of the ATF Louisville Division. “Today, and every day, ATF’s ongoing priority is to reduce violent crime and secure the safety of our communities.”

An indictment is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

This case has been investigated by the FBI Louisville Office, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Louisville Field Division, and is being prosecuted by Trial Attorney Christopher J. Perras of the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice, and Assistant United States Attorney Amanda Gregory of the Western District of Kentucky.

The VIPP Report: On Veterans Day the FIRST African American to hold the rank of “Colonel” in the U.S. Army will receive a permanent memorial in Louisville

The memorial will be at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage

Today, (Sunday 11^th), veterans , officials and community leaders will gather at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage Center, (KCAAH) located at 1701 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd for the official unveiling of the Charles Young Veterans Memorial. This is the first project of the Freedom Flag Initiative. It works through Public-Private Partnerships to install American Flags throughout communities and states across the nation and build memorials to honor our nation’s veterans. The public is invited to attend the Veteran Flag Memorial Project ceremony which takes place at 2:00 pm.

The memorial will be named in honor of Colonel Charles Young. Col. Young was born a slave in 1864 in Mason County, Kentucky. He was one of the first African Americans to graduate from the United States Military Academy at West Point and the first black colonel in the U.S. Army. He also served as a member of the 9^th Calvary also known as the Buffalo Soldiers. Young died in Liberia in 1922.

The Veteran Flag Memorial Project was created by the Region VI Commanders of the National Association for Black Veterans as an opportunity to unify people and communities by providing beautiful spaces to reflect on a symbol that can unify us all.

I love to pass along good news and when I can and I have a good one. Client Darnell “Superchef” Ferguson continues to make strides in the food industry locally and nationally.

We are only a few weeks away from Thanksgiving Day and the Food Network is launching a special show catered to that. It’s called the Ultimate Thanksgiving Challenge. Five chefs will cook the ultimate Thanksgiving dishes. Darnell “Superchef” Ferguson will be one of those chefs.

The show will be hosted Chef Giada De Laurentiis. There will also be three judges and you will recognize their names. They will be Alex Guarnaschelli, Christian Petroni and Carla Hall.

Superchef will have to think out of the box to win the first challenge. According to the Food Network’s site the chefs will be given an ingredient used in the FIRST Thanksgiving. Hmmmm I wonder what it will be?

The show is not just about turkey but the side dishes and desserts. This will be a challenge that we HOPE he’s up too.

The winner of the Ultimate Thanksgiving Challenge carves their name in the turkey day history books, bragging rights for a year and $25,000.

The VIPP Report: A Louisville church with a rich history celebrates their pastor’s 34th anniversary

(Louisville, KY) The Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church made the decision some 34 years ago that Rev. Alex Shanklin would serve as the pastor of the congregation. On Sunday, October 14, 2018 we are requesting your presence as we celebrate during our 11:00 am service.

It’s been a good year for Mt. Olive, from their humble beginnings, as the founders of the church wanted to worship together gathered in a small house to presently in 2018, Mt. Olive is located on several acres on East Kentucky Street. They built the church and family life center. Then doing the impossible during difficult economic times, this congregation burned their mortgage when the loan was paid off. Mt. Olive has proven to be a leader in the growth of the community under the guidance of Rev. Shanklin.

There will be a mid-week service if you are unable to attend Sunday’s service. It will be held on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at 6:00 p.m.

(Louisville, KY) The Kentucky Center for African American Heritage is exhibiting James Pate’s KKK Series Kin Killin’ Kin Traveling Art Exhibition September 14 – November 12, 2018. The artist James Pate’s exhibit features scenes of young African-American men donned in Ku Klux Klan hoods committing acts of violence, creating an overt comparison between gang violence and the terrorism of the KKK. Pate says, “the numbers of Blacks killed by other Blacks since reconstruction far exceeds those lynched by “Whites”. Sadly, this pattern continued year after year, up to the present day”. The Center for Disease Control cites homicide as the leading cause of death for Black males between the age of 15 and 34.

Pate’s Kin Killin’ Kin is designed to shock and stop the viewer. Pate says “mainly, I want kids to pause and reflect”.

To close out the exhibition, a Youth Voices Against Violence Forum will held at the Heritage Center on Saturday, November 3, 2018, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. During this forum, District 15 Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton will facilitate a panel of youth from our community who will discuss the themes of gun violence and other forms of violence occurring in our society today. This panel of youth will examine the themes of gun violence within the context of public health, bystander action, healing through arts, and mobilizing for change through community dialogues.

Kin Killin’ Kin curator Willis Bing Davis says, “art holds the power to promote change”. For Davis, that’s partly because art is a language that everyone understands. “It is the universal connection of the art,” he said. “Art is one of the things that touches all of us.” Art is also a liberating language, he says. “Sometimes the art can say something that we can’t say in words.”

The Heritage Center views this exhibition as a powerful tool to promote community dialogue and community action by delving deeper into the themes of the exhibit, highlighting current efforts in violence prevention in Metro Louisville and cultivating the youth voice in the community. The Heritage Center recognizes the increase in gun violence and its impact on the communities it serves and presents Kin Killin’ Kin for the community to take action.

The VIPP Report: The Soul of Russell Arts & Cultural Festival will be held at the Heritage Center in the heart of the Russell Neighborhood

(Louisville, KY) The Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, (KCAAH) in collaboration with the Kentucky Music Heritage Foundation presents the Soul of Russell Arts & Cultural Festival August 24^th & 25^th. The Soul of Russell Arts and Cultural Festival will be two amazing nights celebrating the blues and jazz tradition in Kentucky at the Heritage Center in Louisville.

On Friday, August 24^th, 2018 from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm local blues and jazz artists will perform Saluting Past Blues and Jazz Giants from Kentucky, showcasing artists: Tanita Gaines, Karan Chavis, Carla Reisert and the Midwest Creole Ensemble, will perform music remembering Mary Anne Fisher, Helen Humes, Sara Martin, Barrington “Boogie” Martin, William “Roach” Cochram, and special tribute to Bluesman Steve Ferguson.

On Saturday, August 25^th from 1:00 pm to 4:00pm, the festival will take you back in history with Kentucky Music from 1840s through the 1920s. At 1:00 pm it’s Gallery Talk: Doug Van Buren About the Exhibition by the Kentucky Music Heritage Foundation currently on display at KCAAH. This conversation is scheduled to conclude around 2:15 pm (approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes).

From 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm its From Jug Band to Blues and Jazz. Michael L. Jones and Keith S. Clements will facilitate a presentation and discussion about the rich history of Jug Band Music the origin of Blues and Jazz in Kentucky. These two presentations are free and open to the public.

Also, on Saturday evening, August 25^th from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm it’s the Soulful Sounds of Derby Town. The evening will showcase some of Louisville’s rich talent featuring Robbie Bartlett, Marjorie Marshall, Paula Yarbrough, Ron Lewis “Mr. Wonderful” and The Villeffect Band.

Lincoln Foundation, in partnership with Dick Sisto, Ken Clay, and Owsley Brown III, present the 2^nd annual Lionel Hampton Tribute Concert Showcase. The concert takes place Friday, August 17^th at 7:30 pm at the Holy Trinity Clifton Campus Eifler Theatre (formerly the Clifton Center) located at 2117 Payne Street.

The fundraiser benefits Lincoln Foundation’s signature Whitney M. YOUNG Scholars Program®. The ultimate goal of the college prep program is to empower students for successful graduation from high school and college. Scholars have earned over 400 postsecondary degrees since 2000. Lincoln Foundation has empowered disadvantaged youth to overcome adversity through education since its inception by Berea College over 100 years ago. The mission of the organization is to provide educational enrichment programs that develop and support youth in overcoming barriers to achievement.

The Lionel Hampton Tribute Concert Showcase honors the late, great jazz musician and Louisville native Lionel Hampton. Born on April 20, 1908, Hampton popularized the vibraphone and was renowned for being an innovator, actor, pianist, showman, and entertainer. Hampton received countless awards and honors which included being recognized for his outstanding work in music by two standing presidents. Both President George H. W. Bush and President Bill Clinton honored the jazz icon.

Louisville’s own jazz legend, vibraphonist Dick Sisto, continues to keep Hampton’s legacy alive. Sisto will serve as the artistic and musical director for the showcase. A group of world-class artists will join Sisto including Jeremy Allen, double bass; Art Gore, drums; Walter Smith III, saxophone; Robert McCarther, vocals; and two-time Grammy Award winner, Kamau Kenyatta, piano. Four of the artists are also renowned professors of jazz at some of the country’s preeminent schools of music.

The evening begins with the presentation of the prestigious Spirit of Excellence Award. The award is annually given to a local individual who exemplifies an active commitment to education, human/community service, and leadership. The 2018 recipients are Steve and Amy Trager. Steve is the Chairman and CEO of Republic Bank, and Amy is a community leader and volunteer. Past recipients include Christina Lee Brown, Laura Douglas, Ed Hamilton, Mary Gwen Wheeler, Mayor Greg Fischer, Robert & Deborah Blair and Lonnie & the late Muhammad Ali.

The VIPP Report: KCAAH will break ground on a memorial named in honor of a Kentucky native and the first African American colonel in the U.S. Army

You are invited to attend on Tuesday, July 31^st at 10:00 am, the ceremonial ground breaking of the Veteran Flag Memorial Project at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, (KCAAH) located at 1701 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd.

The Charles Young Veterans Memorial is the first project of the Freedom Flag Initiative. It works through Public-Private Partnerships to install American Flags throughout communities and states across the nation, and build memorials to honor our nation’s veterans.

The memorial will be named in honor of Colonel Charles Young. Col. Young was born a slave in 1864 in Mason County, Kentucky. He was one of the first African Americans to graduate from the United States Military Academy at West Point and actually the very first black colonel in the U.S. Army. He also served as a member of the 9^th Calvary also known as the Buffalo Soldiers. Young died in Liberia in 1922.

This project will officially announce the Veteran Flag Memorial Project created by the Region VI Commanders of the National Association for Black Veterans as an opportunity to unify people and communities by providing beautiful spaces to reflect on a symbol that can unify us all. The VIPP Report: 2nd Annual Sports & Motivation Youth Camp Series will be a part of Summerfest this weekend in Chickasaw Park

(Louisville, KY) On Saturday, June 23^rd in historic Chickasaw Park in West Louisville the community will gather for the 2^nd Annual Sports & Motivation Youth Camp Series. The camp begins at 9:00 am for youth ages 6 through 13. They must be accompanied by an adult to participate.

Youth will have a chance to meet legends in the sports realm as well as community leaders who will share their wisdom and skills. Professional trainers and instructors will be on hand to give youth an opportunity to learn proper techniques.

Members of the Louisville Bats will be on hand inspiring youth, doing a baseball clinic and giving away home game tickets so youth can take in one of their games. Youth in attendance will also get to hear from members of the West End Golf Tee Program. Wilbur Hackett Sr. and his son Wilbur Hackett Jr. will be in attendance talking about his historic journey as one of the first African American to play football in the SEC and the University of Kentucky. Jerry Ellis will be on hand to talk about his career as well as his late brother former Heavyweight Boxing Champion Jerry Ellis. During the camp Alice Houston and Shively Sporting Goods will be honored for their support to the camp and the community.

The Sports & Motivation Youth Camp Series is FREE but a parent and/or guardian needs to be present. You can register by texting 502-919-0757 or 502-776-1240. There will also be onsite registration. For the adults in attendance, Walmart will provide a $10 gift card for bringing your child to the event.

The VIPP Report: Rev. Jesse Jackson is expected to attend Rev. C. Mackey Daniels funeral in Louisville

(Louisville, KY) Later today, Rev. Dr. C. Mackey Daniels will be laid to rest after being sick for the last few months according to a family spokesman. He peacefully passed away on Mother’s Day, May 13^th.

The pastor for more than 40 years of the West Chestnut Street Baptist Church leaves behind a daughter, four sons and three grandchildren. Rev. Daniels was the first black arbitrator to the courts of Jefferson County Kentucky Bar Association among many positions held throughout his life as a community and civil rights leader.

I understand his good friend and fellow civil right activist, Rev. Jesse Jackson of the Rainbow Coalition will travel to Louisville to be apart of the service. I do know that Rev. Jackson was arrested Monday, (May 21, 2018) just two days before Daniels funeral on Wednesday, May 23, 2018.

Jackson said on his social media page after the arrest, “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”- #DrMLKingJr.

So, I hope he’s able to get to Louisville in time for the funeral service.

Rev. Daniels’ funeral is at 11:00 am at the church followed by the burial at Cave Hill Cemetery. Rev. Dr. C. Mackey Daniels was 81.

Just days after his passing, 17th and Chestnut where the church is located was renamed Rev. C Mackey Daniels Way.

Kimmielaine’s in conjunction with the “No More Red Dots” (NMRD) campaign lead by Dr. Eddie Woods will bring “Sew A.W.A.R.E.”, (Advocating Women around Revolutionary Excellence) which is an extension of Woods’ initiative.

NMRD is dedicated to building a safer, more peaceful inner city by offering opportunities such as activities, events and programs that help improve the lives of young girls.

(Louisville, KY) Darnell “Superchef” Ferguson learned that hunger doesn’t take a day off. He had the opportunity to talk to the team of “Blessings in a Backpack” and they shared with him the staggering number of elementary children that need assistance when it comes to food, particularly on weekends within Jefferson County.

They serve 4,700 children at 43 schools in the Louisville Metro Area. That’s impressive but that’s only 7% of the 64,000 who qualify.

Superchef is ready to take on the challenge and he will be calling on the community to help. It takes approximately $100 to feed one child during a 38-week school year which does not include the summer break.

Darnell says “Can you imagine sitting at home on the weekend and not having enough food and you are counting down the time until you can get breakfast on Monday morning? It’s hard and sad to imagine. I know we as a community can make a difference in the lives of these children and I’m willing to lead the way. We are not going to have a start date because these children needed food yesterday.”

Its Derby Hats Off to Education

(Louisville, KY) Before the world witnesses the Kentucky Derby winner getting their garland of roses, all eyes will be on the 33 high school seniors receiving their pink roses of congratulatory and nearly $63,000 in scholarships as they prepare for college in the Fall. Hortense B. Perry Foundation, Eta Omega Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated of Louisville, Kentucky will host their 38^th Annual Scholarship Derby Brunch on Saturday, May 5^th at the Ramada Hotel & Conference Center located at 9700 Bluegrass Parkway starting at 10:00 am.

Some 1,100 people attend the brunch dressed in their Kentucky Derby attire as they enjoy a delicious brunch, a fashion show, and fantastic entertainment by singer Sheryl Rouse. There will be nearly 20 vendors in attendance. Some of the fashion show items are compliments of Paula’s Boutique Clothes, Hats & Jewelry and In Bloom Again Hats.

Even though this is a day of fun, the sorority members consider it a serious matter when it comes to education and academic excellence. So, over 1000 in attendance will celebrate the announcement of a total of $62,500 in scholarships will be awarded to 33 high school seniors. Forty-thousand dollars in scholarships, from the Hortense Perry Foundation and Henrietta Johnson Trust, will be awarded to 20 young ladies; $10,000 awarded to seven young ladies attending historically black colleges/universities; and awarded to 10,000 young ladies and gentlemen who participated in the sorority’s signature program, ASCEND, which is an after school educational enrichment program designed to support high school students to be successful, graduate, continue their education, and graduate from a college/university.

In just six years, they have awarded more than $305,000. It’s designed to assist future leaders in their academic journey on their collegiate road to success.

The VIPP Report: Civil rights leader honored with a street signing dedication

There will be a community celebration to honor civil rights activist Mattie Jones. On Wednesday, March 28th at 5 p.m. at the corner of Louis Coleman Jr. Drive and River Park Drive there will be a street sign dedication.

Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton of District 5 will join Jones and members of her family and friends will unveil an honorary sign on the block where she lives as a tribute to her accomplishments and efforts for advancing civil rights in Metro Louisville.

At the age of 84, Mattie continues to challenge people and issues that treat people of color in a negative light. You see her being interviewed by the media and protesting throughout the city but she has worked behind the scenes with civil rights leaders all across the United States but she supported her great friend the late Rev. Louis Coleman on a daily basis with issues and situations across Kentucky and parts of Southern Indiana. Their call to duty had no limitations on distance.

Mattie cared for over 100 children as a foster mother. She raised them right along with her eight children. Mattie will be 85 years old on the day of the celebration and dedication.

So on Wednesday, March 28th at 5 p.m. supporters of Mattie Jones will come out and support the mother to children who needed love, people who needed support and she’s the woman who stands up for what is right without even knowing your name.

Now, the public will have a chance to say thank you to the unsung leader who continuously chants for all people…No Justice, No Peace.

(Louisville, KY) NFL star and Louisville native Jamon Brown, announces that he will create several signature events during his off-season, to support his hometown through his non-profit J.Brown Foundation. First on the calendar, is the inaugural Jamon Brown Foundation Celebrity Golf Scramble, in partnership with the Coalition for the Homeless.

The scramble will take place Monday, April 9th at Lake Forest Country Club. Registration will begin at 10:30 am sharp, and at 11:00 am Mayor Greg Fischer will kick-off the event with a welcome. Shortly after, those in attendance will have the unique opportunity to meet and greet former U of L and UK Legends, and other notable celebrities. There will be a 1:00 pm shotgun start.

Brown attended Fern Creek High School in Louisville, KY. He received a scholarship to the University of Louisville, and played football from 2011 to the 2014 season, under Coaches Charlie Strong and Bobby Petrino respectively. He was an offensive line starter on the 2013 Sugar Bowl Champion Team. Brown was then picked in the third round of the 2015 NFL draft by the St. Louis and now Los Angeles Rams. This past season, he started all 16 games as their right guard, helping to lead the way for 2017 NFL Offensive MVP, Todd Gurley.

(Louisville, KY) Mt. Olive has been a vital and a stable entity in the Smoketown neighborhood. On Sunday, February 25^th, Rev. Alex C. Shanklin and its members will celebrate their 118th Church Anniversary.

From their humble beginnings, as the founders of the church wanted to worship together gathered in a small house to presently in 2018, Mt. Olive is located on several acres on East Kentucky Street. They built the church and family life center. Then doing the impossible during difficult economic times, this congregation burned their mortgage when the loan was paid off. Mt. Olive has proven to be a leader in the growth of the community.

So, on Sunday, February 25^th, we invite you to celebrate the history of the church, its deep roots in the Smoketown community and their compassion to give back. This year’s theme says it all, “Love One Another,” from the scripture, I John 4:20-21.

The VIPP Report: Legendary radio personality Bill Price purchases two broadcast stations in Kentucky

BILL PRICE BROADCASTING ACQUIRIES 104.7 WLOU AND 1240 WLLV

(Louisville, KY) Bill Price Broadcasting announces the acquisition of two radio stations in Louisville. As of January 1,2018, they have acquired WLOU and WLLV. The deal was completed in December 2017, and the acquisition became official the first day of the new year. WLOU is a dual AM & FM station simulcasting on the historic 1350 AM and 104.7 FM, programming rhythm and gospel. WLLV 1240 AM is the only gospel talk outlet in the area.

“This is a big day for our community” says Bill Price. “It enables these stations to be under local ownership for the first time in 13 years. This acquisition could not have been completed without the support of the community and several area ministries that played a vital role.”

Price intends to keep both formats of WLOU and WLLV the same while improving both formats and their signals. Currently both stations will service listeners in Metro Louisville and Southern Indiana.

Bill Price Broadcasting will be an owner-operated broadcast outlet which makes them belong to an elite group within the region. Most local radio stations are owned by large companies with multiple outlets that they own, but they do not manage the day-to-day operations.

Price, an iconic figure in the broadcast business, has spent over 40 years developing programming and local radio talent. “It’s an honor to follow in the footsteps of my mentor, William E. Summers, III who once owned and managed WLOU,” says Price. Reverend Summers become the first black person to manage a radio station in the United States, and in 1971 became the first black person in Kentucky to own a radio station.

Price’s legendary career includes stints at Clear Channel, Cox Broadcasting, Blue Chip Radio, Johnson Communications and Anchor Radio.

WLOU is a historic station, and I have been blessed to be part of the most significant occasions, such as achieving number one ranking in the market; switching from a day-time to a 24-hour broadcast; launching WLOU on FM; winning the Stellar Award for National Mid-Market Station of the Year in 2012; the return of Summerfest, and the launch of the Tom Joyner Morning Show in 2015. Owning these stations is a lifelong dream that has come to reality. Never stop chasing your dream,” stated Price.

Indiana native singer, songwriter and producer Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds will be performing at the Louisville Palace. He’s known for working with stars like Toni Braxton , the late Whitney Houston, TLC and Midnight Star who started their group while attending Kentucky State University.

The VIPP Report: The Breakfast Club’s DJ Envy will host Derby Soundstage 2018 in Louisville

With the Kentucky Derby just 86 days away, organizers are working hard behind the scenes planning some of the biggest events, galas and parties around the greatest two minutes in sports. I announced that Grammy Award winning hip-hop/rap artist Lil Wayne will be in concert along with Grammy-nominated newcomer Cardi B and R&B sensation K. Michelle will be in concert on Thursday, May 3^rd at Broadbent Arena for Derby Soundstage 2018.

I’ve just learned that the host of the event will be a member of the World’s Most Dangerous Morning Show, The Breakfast Club. The Derby City welcomes DJ Envy. He will host and dj the concert. Envy is the co-host of the nationally syndicated four and half hour morning show along with Angela Yee and Charlamagne Tha God. The show also showcases some his top music mixes. When he’s not on the show, he travels to host and dj some of the hottest parties and events. So, it’s make sense to have him be a part of the biggest week-long celebration in Louisville leading up to Derby 144 on the first Saturday in May.

All three artists performing have new material from Lil Wayne with Dedication 6, Cardi B with the remix of Finesse featuring Bruno Mars and K. Michelle with her album “The People I Used to Know”.

So, its Lil Wayne. Cardi B and K. Michelle in concert hosted by DJ Envy on Thursday, May 3rd in Broadbent Area. Tickets are on sale and they start at $70. The show will begin at 7:00 pm.

February marks African American History Month. It’s a time to recognize those who worked tirelessly to break barriers when it was unacceptable and not well received to advance to achieve.

The Dr. Joseph McMillan National Conference on the Black Family in America will convene in Louisville on Feb. 23 and Feb. 24 to celebrate the achievements and to acknowledge, discuss and to put words into action that there are still disparities that people of color still need to overcome.

The conference will be held at the Louisville Central Community Center, (LCCC). This year’s theme, “Elevating the Health and Safety of the Black Family and Community”. The mother of Trayvon Martin, Sybrina Fulton will be the keynote speaker for the brunch. Trayvon’s case sparked national conversation and protests with the concerns of racism, gun violence, stereotyping to profiling.

In February of 2012, 17-year-old Trayvon was walking back from a convenience store in Sanford, Florida after purchasing candy and something to drink. He encountered George Zimmerman. He said that he killed the teen in self-defense after a scuffle. Zimmerman saw Martin in the neighborhood and did not recognize him so he called police.

According to Zimmerman, the neighborhood had several robberies and he thought Martin was a suspect. After, contacting police he got into an altercation with the teen and shot Trayvon in the chest.

Initially, Zimmerman was not charged because police said there was no evidence but due to the national media coverage Zimmerman was charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter but later acquitted by a jury in 2013.

Trayvon Martin would have been 23 years old today, (Feb. 5^th).

(Louisville, KY) Down the Stretch we come…We are just 119 days and counting away from the 144th running of the Kentucky Derby and there’s already a race to get events on the calendar. We’ll I have my first announcement and it’s a good one for rap and hip-hop fans. Let’s add a concert to the many events you can enjoy while experiencing the greatest two minutes in sports. I have a feeling a few of our guests will arrive in town a little earlier for this show.

This artist released Dedication 6 on Christmas Day….now I can announce Lil Wayne will be in Louisville for a concert on Thursday, May 3rd. The Grammy Award winning hip hop star is no stranger to Louisville.. He won a Grammy with late artist/producer and Louisville native Stephen “Static Major” Garrett for Lollipop. Wayne was in Louisville in April of 2017 and performed before a sold out audience. He decided not to come alone.

He’s bringing a young artist that’s making her name known in the hip hop game. You’ve seen her on Love and Hip Hop New York and now she has this smash hit, Bodak Yellow, which is excelling her music career. Cardi B will join Lil Wayne in Broadbent Arena. She recently worked with Bruno Mars on the remix of his hit song Finesse.

And let me add just one more artist to the lineup. R and B singer K. Michelle will also travel to Louisville to be a part of the show after releasing her latest album “The People I Used to Know”. If you look at your calendar that’s the same day as the Pegasus Parade…the official kickoff to Derby weekend.

The VIPP Report: Celebrating the legacy of Black Louisville linking the past to the present

From workshops to live entertainment and it takes place along the Old Walnut Street strip

(Louisville, KY) Legacies Unlimited in partnership with the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, (KCAAH) & the University of Louisville Archives & Special Collections presents Celebrating the Legacy of Black Louisville on Friday, January 26^th and 27^th at KCAAH located at 1701 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd formerly known as Old Walnut Street. This year’s theme is “Linking the past to the present.”

On Friday, January 26^th from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm there will be a reception and the opening of exhibits. There will be five works on exhibit: Two Centuries of Black Louisville…the Exhibit; The Expressionism of Victor Sweatt; Louisville Entertainers & Musicians Exhibit Part 1; The textile designs of “Bag Lady: Zephra May Miller and The Folk Art of Louisville’s Marvin Finn.

From 7:30 pm to 10:00 pm KCAAH will transform into the most prominent club housed on Old Walnut Street known today as Muhammad Ali Blvd. In the 1940’s and 50’s everyone would dress up and head down to the Top Hat Club. Jazz would be bellowing out into the streets from some of the greatest jazz artists of their time. So, by linking the past to the present, it’s Jazz at the Top Hall featuring vocalist/musician Gayle King and Hammond B-3 along with Kendall Carter and his quintet. General admission is $30.00 per person.

On Saturday, January 27^th starting at 9:00 am there will be workshops discussing the historic 2^nd Baptist Church in New Albany, IN entitled Pathway to Freedom. The free workshop takes you back in time when the church was a beacon of hope and served as a pathway to the Underground Railroad. Following that workshop will be a jug band music session. German & Irish immigrants along with slaves created this unique sound that left a lasting impression on music’s culture.

At 12:00 pm, guests will get to enjoy The Listening Room. Music from the 1950’s, 60’s & 70’s recordings from Louisville’s African American entertainers and musicians provided by the Soulful Sounds of Derbytown.

To close out the weekend, it’s The Walnut Street Revue featuring Louisville native Vic Frierson. It’s A Song for You: A Tribute to the Life & Music of Luther Vandross. Frierson will celebrate the life and music of Luther Vandross. The event begins at 7:30 pm with Tony Fish & Band. Hosted by WLKY-TV’s Ann Bowdan. General admission tickets are $40 per person. You can purchase them online at http://www.louisville.com, Better Days Records in Lyles Mall and 1765 Bardstown Road. Workshops and exhibits are free to the public.
