(Louisville, KY) Kentucky Derby weekend would not be the same without the concert professionals of Derby Soundstage 2023, bringing some of the top Hip-Hop and R&B artists in the entertainment industry. 

This year’s concert in the Derby City will be one for the history books when it comes to the accolades, they bring to the Louisville stage. 

Derby Soundstage 2023 announces that on Thursday, May 4th at Freedom Hall fans can see T.I., Jeezy, and Trina. Hosted by DJ Drama.

Tickets will be  available at all Ticketmaster locations on February 13th.  They range from $65.00 to $200.00

.T.I. is a three-time Grammy Award winning recording artist with anthems like ‘Whatever You Like’, ‘U Don’t Know Me’, to ‘Big Things Poppin’.  T.I. has sold over 10 million albums in the U.S. alone.  The founding executive of Grand Hustle Records is also a successful actor, entrepreneur, and the host of a poplar podcast “expediTIously with Tip ‘T.I’ Harris. This will be T.I.’s first live appearance in Louisville since 2016. 

Jeezy is a Def Jam artist who released ‘Snofall’ which is now available on all streaming platforms. He’s recently been featured in Freddie Gibbs ‘Rabbit Vision’.  Over this ‘EnTrapreneur’s’ career Jeezy has had a #1 hit Billboard hit ‘Put On’, three top ten hits and 25 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 like ‘Love in This Club’, Soul Survivor’, ‘Leave You Alone’ and ‘Trap or Die’.

Trina is known as the ‘Da Baddest’ in hip-hop. She currently stars in the realty show, Love & Hip Hop: Miami.  XXL calls Trina the most consistent female rapper of all time.  Putting out hits like ‘Here We Go’, ‘B R Right’, and ‘Pull Over’ to name a few of Trina’s many hits.

West Louisville Performing Arts Academy celebrate 33 years of helping youth through arts

(Louisville, KY) The West Louisville Performing Arts Academy (WLPAA) will host its 33rd Hope Awards Dinner Concert at6:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 12th at the Galt House Hotel, 140 North Fourth Street in the Grand Ballroom.

This year’s McDaniel Bluitt Hope Award recipient and keynote speaker will be Dr. Teresa Reed, Dean for the School of Music at the University of Louisville.

Additional awards will be presented during the program to recognizes community leaders who support WLPAA.

McDaniel Bluitt, Executive Director says “We are really excited to be in-person this year. It is so important to keep our youth motivated. This awards dinner gives them a chance to highlight their talent in front of a room full of people who are there to support them. We were one of very few organizations that were able to keep our youth engaged during the pandemic with the generous support of sponsors as we continued to meet and help our youth during such a challenging time. We cannot wait to dress up and have them share what they have been working on for the last two years. We hope you come out and support us”

History

West Louisville Boys Choir began in November 1990. The choir is directed by McDaniel Bluitt, a retired vocal music teacher with twenty-nine (29) years of experience. He received his B. M. ED. from the University of Louisville School of Music and a Masters in Counseling from Western Kentucky University. The Boys Choir has performed throughout the commonwealth, for mayors, governors’ other national dignitaries. The Boys Choir’s first European Tour established international prominence in Paris, France and London, England. They received a superior rating during their first international music competition in the Bahamas. They were also awarded first place in the Music Festival at Sea.

The West Louisville Girls Choir made its debut in November 2002. The choir is directed by Mrs. Mamie Bluitt who received her B.M.ED. from the University of Louisville School of Music. The Girls Choir is also a performing choir. Some of its more notable performances are Governor Patton’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration in Frankfort, Kentucky, ECHO, Women for Women Conference and at Cincinnati’s National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Their first Southwestern Tour to Texas was held in 2010.

T.I. is an actor and entrepreneur known for his southern rap and ‘Trap Music’ with masterful lyrics. He has a lengthy catalog, which includes Billboard #1 hits like ‘Whatever You Like,’ ‘My Love,’ and ‘Live Your Life,’ just to name a few.

Megan Thee Stallion has skyrocketed to stardom amid the 2019 releases of her first full-length mixed-tape ‘Fever’ and hit song ‘Hot Girl Summer.’ These projects earned her a 2019 BET Hip Hop Award and an MTV Video Music Award. Megan has stamped her reputation as a hit-maker with songs like ‘Simone Says,’ ‘Diamonds,’ and ‘Realer.’

They were introduced to the world when they performed “Stand By Me” at the 2018 Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.

Now, The Kingdom Choir announces their North American tour.  On Wednesday, October 16th they will travel to Louisville  and perform at Brown Theatre.

Founded in 1994. The choir draws their inspiration from various Christian traditions and is dedicated to creating a sound that reflects the community.

The VIPP Report: Hip hop artists help their young fans with school supplies by donating their time and talents

(Louisville, KY) This weekend music will fill the air for a great cause as area youth get the opportunity to fill their backpacks with school supplies thanks to some hip-hop artists.  Last year, Dusty Leigh and his team went above and beyond their expectations when it came to donating school supplies to area youth.

On Saturday, August 10th, they do it again thanks to last year’s response and need.  Dusty Leigh Day welcomes Bubba Sparxx, Nappy Roots, Ritz, Sean Paul of the Young Bloodz and Haystak to The Bourbon Hall, 116 W. Jefferson Street.  There will also be a special performance by Burden, Justin Time, Big Murph, Prime Suspects, Rocky Luciano, Japp Wayne and B Simm.

Doors open at 7:00 pm with the concert beginning at 8:00 pm.  You must be over 18 years old to enter the event.

The concert is FREE with a school supply donation.  If you don’t bring supplies, Leigh is asking for a minimum donation of $10.  Proceeds will benefit Shirley’s Way.  The non-profit organization assist families who have a loved one with cancer.  It gives them one less worry as they care for their loved one.

(Louisville, KY) The West Louisville Performing Arts Academy (WLPAA) d.b.a. West Louisville Boys and West Louisville Girls Choirs, (WLBC/WLGC) announces their 19th Annual Hope Christmas Awards Dinner Concert on Saturday, December 1st at the University Club on the University of Louisville’s Belknap Campus.  The dinner concert will begin at 6:00 p.m.

This year’s McDaniel Bluitt Hope Award recipient is Manfred Reid.  The current chairman for the West Louisville Performing Arts Academy.  The Chairman of the Board of Commissioners for the Louisville Metro Housing Authority.  In 2017, Mr. Reid received the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Award given by Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer.   This year’s emcees will be husband and wife team, Entrepreneur and community leader Lacy and Barbara Sexton Smith, Metro Councilwoman for District 4.

(Louisville, KY) The music scene continues to grow in the Louisville bringing in all types of genres.  Now, a rap music fest is coming to give you a diverse platform and several types of rap from southern to east coast rap.  DRIPFEST will be held on Friday, October 19th at Diamond Concert Hall, 630 Barret Ave.

This year’s headliner will be Tekashi 6ix9ine.  The artist known for his unconventional appearance but contagious lyrics and explosive stage performance that you normally see at a rock music concert.  Known for his 2018 hit “FeFe” featuring Nicki Manaj and Murda Beatz which debuted number #3 in the Hot 100. In 2017, his hit “GUMMO” also landed in the HOT 100 ranking. In April, he also released “Gotti” and created a music video in the Dominican Republic and donated money to people in need.

The411 with Sherlene Shanklin:  It’s been a busy day when it comes to concert announcements.  Hip hop star Travis Scott announces his “Astroworld: Wish You Were Here” Tour.  The show is slated as a show unlike anything done before and unlikely to be topped with the artist’s explosive and wild performances.  The tour will kick off in Baltimore, Maryland on November 8th.  Several days later he will make a stop in Louisville, KY at the KFC Yum! Center on Monday, November 19th.

The tour is the same name of his third album, ASTROWORLD.  Scott;s album earned the second highest debut of the year on the Billboard Top 200.

Tickets go on sale Friday, August 24th at 10 am for the Louisville show.

The VIPP Report: 2nd Annual Lionel Hampton Tribute Concert Showcase Benefits Lincoln Foundation’s Signature Whitney M. YOUNG Scholars Program®

Lincoln Foundation, in partnership with Dick Sisto, Ken Clay, and Owsley Brown III, present the 2nd annual Lionel Hampton Tribute Concert Showcase.  The concert takes place Friday, August 17th at 7:30 pm at the Holy Trinity Clifton Campus Eifler Theatre (formerly the Clifton Center) located at 2117 Payne Street.

The fundraiser benefits Lincoln Foundation’s signature Whitney M. YOUNG Scholars Program®.  The ultimate goal of the college prep program is to empower students for successful graduation from high school and college.  Scholars have earned over 400 postsecondary degrees since 2000.  Lincoln Foundation has empowered disadvantaged youth to overcome adversity through education since its inception by Berea College over 100 years ago.  The mission of the organization is to provide educational enrichment programs that develop and support youth in overcoming barriers to achievement.

The Lionel Hampton Tribute Concert Showcase honors the late, great jazz musician and Louisville native Lionel Hampton.  Born on April 20, 1908, Hampton popularized the vibraphone and was renowned for being an innovator, actor, pianist, showman, and entertainer. Hampton received countless awards and honors which included being recognized for his outstanding work in music by two standing presidents.  Both President George H. W. Bush and President Bill Clinton honored the jazz icon.

Louisville’s own jazz legend, vibraphonist Dick Sisto, continues to keep Hampton’s legacy alive.  Sisto will serve as the artistic and musical director for the showcase.  A group of world-class artists will join Sisto including Jeremy Allen, double bass; Art Gore, drums; Walter Smith III, saxophone; Robert McCarther, vocals; and two-time Grammy Award winner, Kamau Kenyatta, piano.  Four of the artists are also renowned professors of jazz at some of the country’s preeminent schools of music.

The evening begins with the presentation of the prestigious Spirit of Excellence Award.  The award is annually given to a local individual who exemplifies an active commitment to education, human/community service, and leadership.  The 2018 recipients are Steve and Amy Trager.  Steve is the Chairman and CEO of Republic Bank, and Amy is a community leader and volunteer.  Past recipients include Christina Lee Brown, Laura Douglas, Ed Hamilton, Mary Gwen Wheeler, Mayor Greg Fischer, Robert & Deborah Blair and Lonnie & the late Muhammad Ali.

The VIPP Report: Comedian Eddie Griffin announces date of Louisville show

The actor/comedian will be in Louisville at the Brown Theatre on Saturday, July 21st.  In February, Showtime premiered his fifth stand-up special, Eddie Griffin: Undeniable and now fans can see him live on stage.

In 1990, Griffin took a dare to get up in front of an audience in a comedy club and do three minutes of stand up. Needless to say some 45 minutes later the choreographer for the Kansas City Chiefs half-time shows hung up his dance shoes and headed to Los Angeles with a one-way ticket to pursue his gift to make people laugh. Some 28 years later, Griffin continues to make people laugh on television and venues across the country.

Tickets for Eddie Griffin’s Louisville show at the Brown Theatre start at $45.  They go on sale at 10:00 am on Friday, May 18th.

The VIPP Report: The Breakfast Club’s DJ Envy will host Derby Soundstage 2018 in Louisville

With the Kentucky Derby just 86 days away, organizers are working hard behind the scenes planning some of the biggest events, galas and parties around the greatest two minutes in sports. I announced that Grammy Award winning hip-hop/rap artist Lil Wayne will be in concert along with Grammy-nominated newcomer Cardi B and R&B sensation K. Michelle will be in concert on Thursday, May 3rd at Broadbent Arena for Derby Soundstage 2018.

All three artists performing have new material from Lil Wayne with Dedication 6, Cardi B with the remix of Finesse featuring Bruno Mars and K. Michelle with her album “The People I Used to Know”.

So, its Lil Wayne. Cardi B and K. Michelle in concert hosted by DJ Envy on Thursday, May 3rd in Broadbent Area. Tickets are on sale and they start at $70. The show will begin at 7:00 pm.

LOUISVILLE, KY – The Lincoln Foundation in partnership with Dick Sisto, Ken Clay, Owsley Brown III, Louisville Public Media, Owsley Brown II Family Foundation, The Kentucky Center, Mike Balter Mallets and Vandoren Saxophone Reeds proudly announces the First, Annual Lionel Hampton Tribute Concert Showcase. The event will take place in the Bomhard Theater of the Kentucky Center on Saturday Oct. 7.

Dick Sisto, on vibraphone, is the artistic and music director who will lead a group of featured jazz artists who will pay tribute to jazz greats past and present.  They include Barry Ries, trumpet (Lionel Hampton); Bobby Broom, guitar (Sonny Rollins); Bobby Floyd, keyboards (Count Basie); Jim Anderson, bass (Benny Golson); Art Gore, drums (George Benson) and special guest Harry Skoler, clarinet (Berklee College of Music).

Louisville native Lionel Hampton was born on April 20, 1908. He popularized the vibraphone and played with the Benny Goodman Quartet before becoming a successful bandleader. Hampton received honors from Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. He performed well into his 90s before passing away in 2002.

Mayor Greg Fischer and the city of Louisville have embraced this event and hope to honor this hometown jazz great and innovator with an official Lionel Hampton dedication day. The event will also feature a showcase of young percussion students on the vibraphone and drums.  A music scholarship will be considered for one of the participating youth.

Schedule and ticket information for the Lionel Hampton Tribute Concert Showcase will be announced later this summer. Proceeds from the event will benefit Lincoln Foundation’s signature Whitney M. YOUNG Scholars Program®.

Lincoln Foundation has empowered disadvantaged youth to overcome adversity through education since its inception by Berea College over 100 years ago. The mission of the organization is to provide educational enrichment programs that develop and support youth in overcoming barriers to achievement. Lincoln Foundation outcomes demonstrate that students can break the cycle of poverty in their families through higher education. Students are holistically developed in an educational culture that stresses academic achievement and graduation from college.  Lincoln Foundation annually serves approximately 600 students from two years of age through college with its year-round, nontraditional educational enrichment programs.

(Louisville, KY) With so much going on in our community from violence to economic disparity, people are looking for a ray of hope and inspiration.  On Saturday, May 20th at 6:00 pm, GAB Productions and WLOU 104.7 FM present “An Evening with Kirk Franklin Live”.

Instead of being behind four walls, Franklin and the planning committee decided they wanted to take the message to streets by holding the concert in an open lot behind St. Stephen Church located at 1018 S. 15th Street.

The theme for the concert: “Peace in the Streets”.  Franklin, a multi-Grammy, Dove, and Stellar Award winner will motivate, inspire, and have you encouraged to be more and do more for yourself, family and community.  That’s the mission for this concert.

We are also excited to have Louisville natives, Dove Award winner, Stellar and Grammy Award nominees Jay and The Team open for Franklin.

The VIPP Report: The ultimate neo-soul and hip hop concert comes to Louisville featuring Erykah Badu, Common & Bilal

The411 with Sherlene Shanklin:  I haven’t seen Erykah Badu in Louisville since she attended the Grand Gala, a Kentucky Derby event several years ago.  Now, she returns to perform.  Initially, I reported that the neo-soul, hip-hop artist would be here January 28th, now I’ve received word that the star will be in the studio working on a new album, which I’m sure her fans will be happy to hear.

Now, Badu along with actor and hip-hop artist Common and alternative hip-hop artist Bilal will join her on Saturday, April 8th in Broadbent Arena at the Kentucky Expo Center.

Critics and music enthusiasts describe Badu as an experimental R & B artist.  She takes a little of contemporary forms of soul and hip hop and blends it into her own sound with influences of jazz and funk.  She recently hosted the Soul Train Awards where Louisville’s own Bryson Tiller was nominated for multiple awards.

commonCommon, the poet, rapper and actor has an extensive background in the entertainment industry.  His original stage name, Common Sense pretty much says it all.  The conscious rapper is a Golden Globe, Academy Award and Grammy Award winning artist.

Bilal is an independent artist whose multi-talented as he juggles being a singer-songwriter, producer and musician.   When he performs you will hear influences of jazz, soul, and some blues.

The VIPP Report: Drake and Lil Wayne will be in concert in Cincinnati, Ohio. The two hip hop superstars decided to co-headline a tour. The 31 city tour will cross the United States and will make a stop at Riverbend Music Center on Friday, August 15th. Tickets go on sale this Friday, June 20th at 10:00 a.m.

The VIPP Report: Gospel artist Marvin Sapp on tour to help promote school choice in urban communities

The VIPP Report: Dove & BET award winning gospel artist Marvin Sapp is currently on his “School of Choice Tour”. The 11-city free tour is in Louisville, KY tonight. Sapp along with Sunday Best season two contestant and RCA Inspiration label mate Latice Crawford and the Doctor of Comedy Henn Sapp will be at Christ Temple Christian Life Center.

Sapp will share his inspirational story of his late wife Dr. Malinda Sapp who had a vision to take inner city children from great to greater through education. Sapp says he’s excited about partnering with the Black Alliance for Educational Options Partner (BAEO) again, helping to promote school choice to urban communities. Their hope during the tour is to make parents aware of their options when it comes to public education.

After Louisville’s show, The “Marvin Sap School of Choice Tour” heads to Nashville, TN on the 12th, followed by Chattanooga, TN on the 13th and Atlanta, GA on Friday night, February 14th.
