The VIPP Report: African American Bloodstock Agent Seeks Winner’s Circle at Kentucky Derby

HARBUT-STACKED copy

LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY, Aug. 24, 2020 – The 146th running of the Kentucky Derby will be like none other.  There will be no fans in the stands at Churchill Downs, and for the first time in 13 years, African Americans will have ownership in a derby qualifying racehorse.

Ray Daniels, a Lexington businessman and Greg Harbut, a Lexington Bloodstock Agent are two of three owners of the Kentucky thoroughbred, Necker Island.  The two are among a tiny group of Black men to ever own a Derby qualifying racehorse.  “My family and I are excited and truly blessed to be part of such a momentous event,” Daniels said.

Especially noteworthy of this historic accomplishment is Harbut’s lineage.  He is the grandson of Tom Harbut, a groom and subsequently the general manager for Harry F. Guggenheim’s breeding stallion operations in the 1960s.  Tom Harbut owned a racehorse, Touch Bar that ran in the 1962 Kentucky Derby.  He did not attend to watch his horse because Black’s were not allowed to sit in the grandstands.  Greg is the great-grandson of Will Harbut, the legendary groom for Man o’ War from 1930-1946.  Many industry experts consider Man o’ War to be the greatest racehorse of all time.  “My family has been on this journey for nearly 100 years.  Horseracing is in our blood and I am humbled and honored to continue the legacy of my grandfather and great-grandfather,” Harbut said.

Many organizations are calling for a boycott of the Derby as a pathway to justice for the unarmed killing of Breonna Taylor at the hands of the Louisville Police Department.  “There is a powerful social movement sweeping the country that cannot be ignored,” said Daniels.  “Black lives matter, and I wholeheartedly stand in solidarity with the family of Breonna Taylor in the call for justice.”

Necker Island is a colt by Hard Spun who finished second in the 2007 Kentucky Derby and amassed nearly $3 million in career earnings.  Necker Island will be ridden by Miguel Mena on Sept. 5th.

The VIPP Report: Louisville protest move from the business district to the neighborhoods

UPDATED 7/15/2020 4:30pm: From Louisville Metro Police Dept.: Suzanne Craft the individual that was served a summons regarding vandalism with racial hate messages was arrested today by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s for failure to appear in court on those charges.

This evening, members of Louisville Showing Up for Racial Justice (LSURJ) along with other community leaders and protesters will converge on the Lake Forest neighborhood located in Eastern Jefferson County, a subdivision in Louisville.

They are going to this particular community after several driveways were spray painted with racist slurs.  The protesters are concerned that there was not enough action taken on the incident to protest the families involved and to express support for those involved.

This incident(s) took place on and/or around June 29th, following unrest after the death of George Floyd and the ongoing case right here in Louisville of Breonna Taylor.

On March 13th just before 1:00 am on Springfield Drive, Breonna Taylor was shot multiple times after LMPD executed a no-knock search warrant.  The 26 year old died from her injuries.

Protests started in Louisville, Kentucky on May 29th and they continue to this day like the Lake Forest protest as well 6th and Jefferson in downtown Louisville.

The investigation is currently in its fourth month and is in the hands of the Kentucky Attorney General’s office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, (FBI).

Follow me for up to date information on the Breonna Taylor case.

The Stamina Foundation will pursue this mission with educational programming and events throughout the year, but the first major project will be the development of the Stamina Academy. The purpose of the Stamina Academy is to teach life skills to youth both in and out of the school system with the goal of bringing this generation back to life’s basic skills: manners, being respectful to others, self-confidence, self-motivation, and self-education.

Youth today are greatly influenced by their peers and social media. Without proper guidance or a positive infrastructure, they tend to go down a bad road, which results in negative, long-term life consequences. Stamina will teach youth to identify and pursue their passions and to focus on being great instead of trying to fit in. For additional information go to http://www.staminafd.com.

The VIPP Report: The Green House Family Resource Center plants a new seed of hope on growing, supporting and sustaining families

green

Grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at their new headquarters just a block away from courts system

(Louisville, KY) So many have expressed their concern that they have to travel all over the city to handle their social service needs.  We introduce to the community, The Green House.  The family resource center provides supervised visitation and facilitated exchanges, individual, co-parenting and group therapy, and psychiatric services all under one roof for the convenience of their clients.

On Friday, August 9th at 717 W. Market Street, Suite 1 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm city officials, community leaders, clients and prospective clients will tour the facility and interact with staff.  During the open house, a ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 4:00 pm.

The Green House’s founder Jessica Green understands and is appreciative of the one stop shop convenience.  Green, a family law practitioner, healthy family advocate and adoptive mother of three children says “In honor and loving memory of her parents, James and Dr. Judith Green, who adopted 11 children, and fostered over 100 children during their lifetimes, The Green House, was birthed, furthering their legacy of creating a better community, one family and one child at a time. I too understand the importance as a mother the difficulty that many families have in going to multiple service providers to make sure that their family’s needs are met in a timely fashion. Our focus is to strengthen and support families”

At The Green House, each family is required to do an in-person intake interview with one of our service clinicians, and to complete an intake form to ensure that we understand the unique needs and concerns of each family.  It is also important that each family understands how our program works.  Case workers and judges are also able to refer cases directly to The Green House.  Intake forms and Court referral forms can be found on our website at GreenHouseFamilies.com.

The Green House accepts all insurances for therapeutic services and offer competitive and affordable rates for our visitation and exchange services.

In addition to offering supervised visitation (both monitored and sight and sound), facilitated child exchanges, we are pleased to also offer individual and group therapy, co-parenting therapy, reunification therapy, parenting classes, provide documentation for Court and CHFS services, and have a board-certified psychiatrist on our staff.  Certain clients may also qualify for case management services.

For additional information on The Green House Resource Center visit their website at www.greenhousefamilies.com.

During the ribbon cutting ceremony, we will have remarks from a member of Mayor Greg Fischer’s office as well as Councilwoman Barbara Sexton Smith because The Green House is in her district.

School-aged youth in attendance will receive some school supplies to assist them with a fresh start to a new school year.  We will also have vouchers for free haircuts and school physicals for qualifying students.

If you would like to setup an interview with Green prior to the ribbon cutting ceremony, please contact VIPP Communications at info@vippcommunications.com or by calling 502-295-0435.

The VIPP Report: Hip-hop legends Wu-Tang Clan adds Louisville to their 36 Chambers 25th Anniversary Tour

WuTang10229blackRT_01312019065834_large

Special Report by Sherlene Shanklin, WHAS11 Louisville (ABC Affiliate)

Since the 1970s, hip-hop was destined to become a force to be reckoned with. Slick lyrics meshed with edgy beats kept many emcees constantly evolving their craft.

Twenty-five years ago, a group of individuals from New York translated their street life to gritty lyrics, which many recognized as the harder side of the craft. They blended it with martial arts terminology while giving it a unique mythology known today as hardcore hip-hop.

The members of the Wu-Tang Clan will hit the road to celebrate their silver anniversary of their 1993 debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers).

All nine members – RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa and Cappadonna are headed to Louisville for their “36th Chambers 25th Anniversary Tour on Friday, October 18 and the new Old Forester’s Paristown Hall at 8 p.m.

Wu-Tang is regarded as one of the most influential hip-hop groups of all time with conscious albums like Wu-Tang Forever, A Better Tomorrow, and The W just to name a few of their studio albums.   Some of the singles you might hear at the concert is Can it Be All So Simple, Method Man, Protect Ya Neck, Triumph and The Heart Gently Weeps.

The group has 7 gold and platinum studio albums to their credit. Selling more than 40 million albums.

Tickets go on sale Friday, June 4th at 10:00 am.  When I receive the price point I will update the story.

The VIPP Report: The story Emilio and Gloria Estefan opens tonight in Louisville

on_your_feet_OG

By Sherlene Shanklin

The phrase “On Your Feet” is symbolic for both Emilio and Gloria Estefan. One would automatically think it’s an eruption into a standing ovation which they receive during performances.

It’s goes a little deeper than that.

On March 20, 1990, Gloria’s tour bus crashed while in a snowstorm where she fractured her spine and required extensive rehab.  Doctors at one point thought she would never walk again but Estefan’s determination proved everyone wrong.

In fact, in less than a year, she was walking again and resumed her tour, performing one of her hits “On Your Feet”.

Fast-forward to 2019, now there’s a Broadway musical created by the Estefans with the same name.

Starting tonight through March 17, “On Your Feet” will be at the Kentucky Center in Louisville.  Coincidentally, it ends in Louisville just three days from the anniversary of that crash that changed Gloria and Emilio’s life.

The musical takes you behind the scenes, giving an intimate look at leaving their lives in Cuba, moving to Miami with nothing and their rise to international acclaim. The Estefans hit it big on both Spanish and mainstream charts.

The dynamic couple and business partners describe their journey of resilience by saying in the face of adversity, they found a way to end up on their feet earning a combined 26 Grammy Awards.

Tickets start at $37.00.  You need to check their website kentuckycenter.org for available show times.

The VIPP Report: The “4 The Love of It” Tour featuring four members of New Edition scheduled to perform in 20 cities

If you’re a 90’s baby and I say the phrase, “Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky and Mike” what immediately comes to mind?  Likely, New Edition’s hit song “Candy Girl”.  As you sing that song in your head, just think in May you can sing it along with them.  RBRM: Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky and Mike will hit the road, 4 The Love of It Tour.  The legendary multi-platinum R & B stars will be at the Louisville Palace Thursday, May 23, 2019 at 8 p.m.

Can you believe that New Edition’s Ronnie DeVoe, Bobby Brown, Ricky Bell, and Michael Bivins have performed for over four decades?  One of the pioneers in the boy band era basically changing the landscape of popular music.  You will hear songs like: Mr. Telephone Man, Is This The End, Popcorn Love, Count Me Out, Can You Stand The Rain,  and “If It Isn’t Love” just to name a few of their many hit singles.

Also, during their Louisville show, Bobby Brown and Bell Biv DeVoe will perform individually.

The members call “RBRM” a new explosive twist as they hit the stage together in the Spring.  Tickets are already on sale and range from $49.50 to $119.50.  Showtime is 8:00 p.m.  Tickets may be purchased at www.LouisvillePalace.com or at The Louisville Palace Box Office, 625 South Fourth Street.
