“Superchef” films pilot cooking show in Louisville

The celebrity chef launches a new show with unique dishes, guests along with local, regional, and national products highlighted

(Louisville, Ky) Darnell “Superchef” Ferguson announces that he will do a live taping for his new pilot show in Kentucky. The chef, author, and television personality says, 2026 will be the year for the launch. Save the date of Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 9:00 pm.

The show will be filmed inside a locally owned supermarket. Valu Market is located at 7519 Outer Loop in the Outer Loop Plaza. The store will transform into a tv set while using some of their products during the show.

Superchef says “This is the most important cooking show that has been out. I cannot wait to include Louisville in the production. I am excited about the potential of this show.”

The act of giving back to the city he calls home, Superchef understands the importance of community service and building the hope to others in the community. As a way to say thank you for your support, the show will be donated to Sowing Seeds of Faith’, a nonprofit company based here in Louisville.

“Superchef” won the ‘Best Thanksgiving Challenge’ on the Food Network, Host of the hit show ‘SUPERCHEF GRUDGE MATCH’ also on the Food Network.  Appearing on the Rachel Ray Show, the Today Show and some of the Food Network’s other top shows from ‘Worst Cooks in America,’ to ‘Chopped.’  In 2008, Ferguson cooked for Team USA for the Summer Olympics in Beijing.

HHN2L rolls out the red carpet to highlight talented youth in a film that gives a modern holiday message

The event will highlight specific clips from short film, a panel discussion, the soundtrack release plus live performances celebrating creativity

(Louisville, KY) With the holiday season in full swing. Families have an opportunity to take the family to an event created with youth in mind. Hip Hop Into Learning, (HHN2L) is proud to present The Last Hit: A Red-Carpet Premiere Where Youth Create Healing. The formal/red-carpet attire also known as Black Dandyism will take place on Sunday, December 14th from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at The Portal located at 1512 Portland Ave.

We are excited to announce that The Last Hit is a short film written by Jeriah McMillian and Demi Gardner. Louisville native Rodney Cox directed the film and HHN2L produced the product. The short film was written, starred in, and scored by students from The Real Young Prodigys Program.

The film takes a creative modern twist on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. The story delivers a message on the struggle with vaping. Using the past, present and future concepts set in current times makes the story real those who experience the effects of the problem. A message being delivered by the youth about youth is the way to bring real awareness to an issue in communities across the country.

McMillan is a freshman at Jefferson Community Technical College, (JCTC). He is also a graduate of Dubois Academy and a long-time member of The Real Young Prodigys Program since the sixth grade. Garner, a native of West Louisville and graduate of Western Kentucky University, provided invaluable one-on-one support to help Jeriah develop a three-minute short film script which we will witness their labor of love from writing, production to seeing the final product on the big screen. The film will officially be released in 2026.

McMillan hopes to inspire his peers while sharing his passion project which he also stars in the film. ‘Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass; it is about learning how to dance in the rain. When you see the film, you will understand highlight the purpose of having symbolism play a significant role. He adds “I chose spirits and when you watch the film it will become clear what is taking place. People tend to lose the truth about themselves, which is who they truly are. I am excited to share my thought process and how they story developed.”

The evening is all about empowering the youth of the community and giving them opportunities to excel. The event will include seeing for the first time a clip of the film which will focus on vaping, depression and peer pressure. Then the panel discussion will use those topics to springboard concerns of the youth so they can begin the dialogue,  along with thought provoking messages through youth performances.

The movie’s soundtrack was scored by the students in The Real Young Prodigys Program. Music of hope and real-life lessons. HHN2L has also partnered with Butler High School’s Black Student Union, (BSU) who will be presenting the topic of drug use which is taking over communities across the country. Antonio Taylor cofounder of HHN2L says giving youth a voice is vital to the future of their success, “It’s important for youth to tell their own stories in their own way in their own words.’

This event would not be possible without the support of HHN2L, Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky and Butler High School BSU.

Nyree Clayton-Taylor, Executive Director of HHN2L, explains the importance of having partners in the community like the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky and the grant they provided helped make a dream become a reality. She says “The grant allowed us to use art for healing. HHN2L plans to create a curriculum and take the movie into schools to teach and start the dialogue on how to use youth-created media to tell their stories”.

Admission to The Last Hit: A Red-Carpet Premiere Where Youth Create Healing is $20 or $15 with a canned good donation for our Dare to Care Food drive.

(Louisville, KY) Over Tuft Rugs presents Louisville’s Greatest Streetwear. It takes place on Saturday, November 15th from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the First Gethsemane gym located at 1159 Algonquin Pkwy.

The day will be filled with guest speakers, giveaways, contests and of course thirty (30) plus of vendors. This free event gives businesses an opportunity to display their brand while garnering community support. There will be plenty of food, good music, and nothing but positive vibes and purpose.

Even though the event is free, we want to give back so we are asking guests to bring a toy donation so we can bless unprivileged children in this community.

We are giving back to the same community that we work, sleep, and play in each day. To see people struggling and we know we can help that is our goal.

Louisville museum receives national recognition for their preservation of Black history

When I received this notification from Lamont Collins, founder of Roots 101 African American Museum I could hear validation without him even saying a word.

Stellar TV is recognizing Roots 101 in their 4th Black History Honors in 2026.

Roots 101 African American Museum serves as an important cultural institution in Louisville, KY dedicated to preserving and sharing the fearless and sometimes heartbreaking stories of African Americans. 

The museum was founded in 2020 by Collins, that was during social unrest in Louisville after the death of Breonna Taylor and the global pandemic. Roots 101 African-American Museum became a meeting place for protesters and community leaders.

The museum is where visitors can see themselves in history, explore the African American story in its entirety, and gain a greater understanding of the achievements, cultural contributions, and experiences of the community. It also houses a lot of Kentucky history from ‘The Roots of Music’, ‘The Four of Us’, ‘Big Momma’s House’ and ‘Static Major’ just to name a few of the many exhibits in the museum.

The museum is a history lesson as soon as you walk through the doors. Room after room sets a scene. Like a ‘Greenbook’ of places set in a certain time period of Black history.

The 2025 featured museums were:

  • National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel
  • Stax Museum of American Soul Music
  • Mississippi Civil Rights Museum

Rap legend Ice Cube hits the road with his Truth to Power tour along with new music

The Truth to Power: 4 Decades of Attitude Tour is underway with no other than hip-hop legend Ice Cube. The tour is all about celebrating 40 years of creating groundbreaking music and becoming of the most influencers of the culture.

Ice Cube’s iconic career is admired by many and the open of the tour in Denver set the standard that fans all over the U.S. will experience when he makes a stop in your city. Performing some of his biggest hits and fan favorites. Imagine singing along to “It Was a Good Day,” “Check Yo Self,” and “You Can Do It,” alongside new material including “Before Hip Hop” and tracks from his new album Man Up.

The tour started in Denver, Colorado on September 16th and scheduled to end October 17th in Houston, TX.

Latin Music Awards Kentucky

On Saturday, September 20th it’s the 7th Latin Music Awards Kentucky celebrating music, but they are doing it for a great cause. 

Israel Cuenca, President of Latin Music Awards says “We are going to give ten different scholarships for students at the University of Louisville, Jefferson Community College and Bellarmine University.  We have a great lineup of performances.  We have multiple bands playing mariachi playing, reggaeton, salsa style of music as well.  It’s going to be a great night of music and celebration.” 

It’s all takes place on Saturday night at 8 pm. at Fourth Street Live in downtown Louisville.  This is a free event dedicated to celebrating the vibrant talent and culture of Latin music in Kentucky and across the region.

A KENTUCKY WOMAN CREATES A SELECTION OF WINES IN HONOR OF HER LATE HUSBAND

Wineing Widows secures nearly two dozen Kentucky retailers to sell their wine in their stores

Louisville, Ky- September 11, 2025 — With the uncertainty of tariffs and how many businesses work to stay open Sheryl Woods, an entrepreneur, known for being a part of some of the biggest concerts and events steps out on faith to add owner and founder of The Wineing Widows LLC brands to her portfolio.

Woods established the brand in 2022.  The name came from her resilience after getting the title she never planned to have at 30 years old.  Her late husband Staff Sergent Curtis Woods passed away in April 1997 after being married 11 years. 

Woods says ‘I got married at 19 years old and at 30 I became a widow. I was left to raise three young sons. For years, I grieved but I knew I wanted to leave a legacy for my family and something in his honor.”

Today, there are eight wines with one being a special edition.  They are Redbellious, White Wings, Black Cherry, Razzle Dazzle Raspberry, Marvelous Moscato, Serenity, and Sweet Roja.  The special edition ‘Hollywood’ will be released in the final quarter of 2025.  The names have a special meaning that Woods can explain during the interview. 

Woods says “I always knew I would do this, but it is all about the timing.  My sons are grown and have families of their own.  I knew it was time to turn these tears to wine. While celebrating every goal large or small.  Life is too short to keep watching from the sidelines when I know business and what it takes to be successful.”

Trap soul artist Bryson Tiller set to release a double album; ‘The Vices’

Grammy-nominated and Louisville native Bryson Tiller is set to release new music.  If you follow me you know I mentioned last week that he and Chris Brown released ‘It Depends’ where Tiller was featured but now, he’s ready to announce its own project. 

The album is entitled, ‘The Vices’.  It’s a double album, Solace & The Vices. 

On Friday, August 8 the first installment via Trapsoul/RCA Records will be released. The project marks a fresh chapter in Tiller’s ever-evolving sound.  Credited to the talented production team of Charlie Heat, Teddy Walton, Hitmaka, and Gravez.

This album is explained as Tiller’s gritty, high-energy side. Tiller known for blending sharp bars with melodic instinct, this project dives deeper into his rap roots, offering a confident and unapologetic look at the artist in motion.

The album sets the tone for what promises to be one of the Louisville native’s boldest creative moves yet.

Then the second installment, Solace, which will be released later this year, will take a more introspective approach. Tiller says, “my own personal therapy session.” Solace will explore themes of reflection, growth, and emotional clarity.

This new body of work is released as Tiller celebrates the ten-year anniversary of his debut album T R A P S O U L in October. The 3x platinum-certified album made its mark with the breakout diamond-certified hit “Don’t,”  in 2015, which helped define modern trap R&B. 

Tiller is currently on the road with Brown as a special guest on the Breezy Bowl XX Stadium Tour, which runs through September with stops in major U.S. cities.

Inaugural Bourbon, Barbeque, Kickboxing & Boxing event being held in Louisville

It’s a two-day event full of food, fun and fights

(Louisville, KY) Main Event Kombat LLC announces our first ever Barbeque, Bourbon, and Mayhem.  The two-day event will take place on Friday, August 8th and Saturday, August 9th at Harley Davidson located at 2755 Terra Crossing Blvd in Louisville, KY.

We anticipate guests from all over the U.S. to converge on the Bluegrass to enjoy this one-of-a-kind event.  Fans will get to enjoy Kickboxing on Friday night and boxing on Saturday.  Where else can you go where you can enjoy both sports?  We also have another type of competition taking place on the grill.  There will be an Amateur BBQ Competition featuring grilling experts showing off their cooking skills. 

The event, founded by Lawrence Winburn Jr, Haven Harrington, and Chef John Railey.  The three produced this unique concept which is already getting rave reviews.  Winburn says, ‘We have been working on this event for years and decided 2025 would be the right time to make its debut.” Winburn goes on to say, “This will be an annual event that many can look forward to in the years to come.” 

Harrington adds “This is the perfect recipe adding barbeque, bourbon and a main event which will be kickboxing one night and boxing on another.  For sports fans this is a perfect combination, and we are offering it all under one roof. I think people will be excited to see the lineup both evenings.”

Railey says, “It is the food for me.  The competition element really draws a different audience.  It is like multiple events taking place in one venue with a nightcap in the ring for boxing and kickboxing.  This will be an exciting time, experience, and of course great food.”

On Friday, August 8th, from 5 pm to 7 pm there will be a ‘BBQ Meet & Greet’ with seven award-winning Pit Masters from across the nation.  This event is free and open to the public. Followed by the ticketed Kickboxing event from 8 pm to 11 pm.  Featuring a full card of bouts with regional and national talent.  There will also be a full-service bar. 

On Saturday, August 9th from 4 pm to 7 pm guests will get to witness the Amateur BBQ Competition. Come and taste award winning BBQ from seven award-winning pitmasters from across the U.S.

 This is a free event and open to the public. The ticketed boxing match will highlight the best up and coming professional boxers. It will be from 8 pm to 11 pm.  Doors for both nights open at 7 pm with matches beginning at 8pm.

Both nights there will be a bourbon, tequila, beer and wine showcase.Each fight presented and sponsored by leading bourbon brands, with branded tasting booths and promotions. Along with a Cash Bar & Food Court: Featuring local vendors and specialty bourbon cocktails. The kickboxing tickets are $30 dollars (plus tax and fees $5.88) and $40 dollars at the door.  Boxing tickets are $50 in advance and $60 at the door.

“Operation Barbeque Relief” is in effect so sales of barbeque will support The National Barbeque Association who feeds those directly affected by the natural disasters across our nation.  When others leave affected areas, they remain to make sure they are taken care of long term. 

Again, it is free to enter and tour Harley Davidson and attend a Meet & Great with Pit Masters from across the nation.

Shanklin won in the serious news feature category with the exclusive with Sydney Thomas. She was rescued from her semi cab that was hanging over the Second Street Bridge in Louisville, KY. The world watched as she was looking down at the Ohio River hoping to be saved before the cab of the semi-truck falls into the river. She sat down and explained for the one and only time about how that 45 minutes felt like forever.

Malcolm Jamal Warner dies in a drowning accident

Malcolm Jamal Warner the famed child star who played Theo Huxtable on the Cosby Show has died. One of his latest roles he appeared on the hit show 9-1-1 drowned off of the coast of Costa Rica on Sunday according to authorities.

Authorities go on to say Warner was caught in a high current and his body was recovered later that day. Warner’s official cause of death was asphyxia. He leaves behind a wife and daughter. Warner was 54 years old.

Metro Disability Coalition recognizes those who go above and beyond to help others

(Louisville, KY) The Metro Disability Coalition will hold our 23rd Annual Breaking Barriers Spotlight Awards on Friday, May 9th from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. at the Rudd Heart & Lung Center located at 201 Abraham Flexner Way.

Prior to the ceremony, there will be a reception for special honorees, dignitaries and other special guests participating in the program. This year, Shannon Davis aka ‘Coach by Shine’ will serve as this year’s master of ceremony.   

We are excited to announce that this year’s guest speaker is Dr. Sherry Babbage Melisizwe.  The Louisville community knows her as Dr. Babbage and her main practice which was established in West Louisville.Educating the community on dental health and treatment. She graduated from the University of Louisville School of Dentistry. Becoming a D.M.D in 1981. Making her one of the few African American female dentists in the Commonwealth of Kentucky at that time. Receiving countless awards for work in her profession and service to the community.  Dr. Babbage says the work she does is her ministry. We chose Dr. Babbage because she demonstrates professionalism and love for her community each and every day. 

The evening is a celebration for those who take time out of their day to assist others. Its concern for others is what makes the following special.  They take pride in giving back and they care about the well-being of all people in the community.  The following good neighbors and unsung heroes in their various fields range from service workers, educators to youth who go above and beyond the call of duty to assist those in need. Which includes many from Jefferson County Public Schools, (JCPS). We are excited to announce this year’s honorees.

Shaboozey will headline FanDuel’s Kentucky Derby Party on Derby Eve

Down the Stretch with Sherlene Shanklin:  With 19 days before Kentucky Derby 151.  The guest lists are being to pop up.  For the second year, The FanDuel Kentucky Derby Party will host a party Oaks night, Friday, May 2nd.  This exclusive, invite-only event will take place at Paristown Hall. 

Fresh off his Coachella performance and now he will perform in Louisville. This year’s entertainment will be Grammy-nominated country music sensation Shaboozey.  The rapper, singer, and songwriter, best known for A Bar Song, (Tipsy) will perform. holds the record for the longest-leading Hot 100 No. 1 while also topping Billboard’s Hot Country Songs, Country Airplay Chart, and Mediabase/Country Aircheck charts. The single has accumulated over a billion streams across DSPs and made history, making Shaboozey the first Black male artist to simultaneously top Billboard’s Hot Country Songs and Hot 100.  

With his Nigerian roots he’s found a way to blend, country, hip-hop, rock and Americana is what music critics have called him a true cross-over artist.    

Shaboozey says, “I’m hyped to be part of the Derby this year. It’s one of those bucket list events you dream about playing and we’ll be bringing serious vibes to Louisville with FanDuel.” 

When entering, VIP guests from the worlds of sports, entertainment, music, and horse racing will walk a blue carpet.

FanDuel will make a $100,000 donation in support of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance.  The nonprofit organization supports the care, retraining, and rehoming of retired racehorses. This is the fifth year, FanDuel have donated to the organization.

Revel at the Races announce their entertainment

We are less than 30 days away from one of the greatest sporting events, the Kentucky Derby.  Its more than the fastest two minutes in sports but the events, parties and galas that surround it.  The Kentucky Derby draws thousands of fans. All looking for something to do while in Louisville. 

Sports Illustrated, (SI) created the ‘Revel At The Races’ that embraces the race, the sport, music, and celebration that Derby brings.  In 2024, their inaugural event drew some of the biggest names in sports from Travis Kelce to Aaron Rodgers, Alix Earle, and Devante Adams. 

Now, they are excited to announce that ‘Revel At The Races’ will return for a second year on Derby Eve. SI’s exclusive event guarantees to be unforgettable.  The late-night experience will have Diplo as their headliner.  He’s known as a ‘DJ’ and music producer.  Fans would say they know him as the co-creator and lead member of the electric dancehall music project Major Lazer.  Their other special guest Xandra Pohl will open. 

This event will take place, Derby Eve, Friday, May 2nd at the Ice House located at 226 E Washington St. Doors open at 10:00 p.m.   

Organizers which include a partnership with Louisville’s J Wagner Group, promises to offer the same level of top-notch hospitality in the very intimate venue in downtown Louisville.

Women in sports finally getting the attention and support they deserve

To see women’s sports explode is exciting. So many women I know played sports in high school and college. At 4’11, I played on the b-ball team for conditioning for track and the sisterhood. I ran with Deltresa Moore at Western Kentucky University. Everytime,we hit the mark for the scholarships, they had an excuse. We got nothing for it but a bond of sisterhood and ‘you can’t beat me’ attitude that we took into the workplace. But my cousin Veronica Shanklin was able to get it at the very school that we were denied. Can you imagine the NIL deals we would of had if NIL existed? I wore #lipstick #twodifferentcolorspikes that’s not new we did in the 80s 90s. #lol #remember those who kept trying so that women today can do.

Legacies Unlimited Presents Soulful Sounds of Derbytown

(Louisville, KY) Legacies Unlimited’s annual Walnut Street Revue presents the Soulful Sounds of Derbytown, a tribute to Louisville’s African American Musicians & Entertainers at 7:30 pm on January 25th at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage (KCAAH) located at 1701 W. Muhammed Ali Blvd.

The show will feature “International Queen of the Blues,” Toni Green and bluesman Big “Poppa” Stampley. Green recently received the W C Handy Lifetime Achievement Award whose previous recipients include Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland, Koko Taylor & the great Al Green.

THE TOUR WILL NOT ONLY ENTERTAIN BUT EDUCATE BY BRINGING AWARENESS TO MENTAL HEALTH

(Louisville, Ky) Leslie Pryor Productions, (LPP) a woman led theater company is excited to announce “Murder at the Disco Lounge” the tour. If you did not get to see the show in Louisville in June, you missed a treat. Because of the overwhelming response, Leslie Pryor and her team decides to go to the fans who may not be able to travel. 

The first stop on the tour will be Lexington, KY. On Saturday, September 14th at 6:00 pm. The show will take place at the Tates Creek Ballroom, 1400 Gainesway Drive.  There will be only one show taking place at this beautiful venue. If you are not familiar with “Murder at the Disco Lounge” let’s set the scene for you. The production takes you to the disco era of the 1970s where everyone listened to Donna Summer, Earth, Wind & Fire, the Bee Gees and Sister Sledge. While wearing afros along with bright fluorescent colors and patterned ‘hot pants’, and halter-neck tops and of course platform shoes. They wore pretty much anything that made them standout. While enjoying the good times an incident takes place.  Turning the disco lounge into a crime scene and murder mystery. Where the audience will help solve the case.  

“Murder at the Disco Lounge,” is a gripping mystery from jealousy, ambition, to betrayal and it will all unfold before the audience.  The tale that will keep theatergoers on the edge of their seats. 

The show was created by Leslie Pryor of Leslie Pryor Productions. The CEO and founder of the production company also wrote and directs this show.  Pryor says, “If you dream, have confidence and study your craft anything is possible. I’m blessed to also have such a gifted group of actors that helped bring my vision to life. Come prepared to participate it really does bring an exciting element. I hope to see you in Lexington and other towns across the bluegrass.”

Not only are we asking you to participate but dress the part.  Audience members are asked to come dressed in 70s style attire, but it’s not required.   

The cast of “Murder at the Disco Lounge” is comprised of seven talented African Americans renowned actors and actresses with Kentucky roots featuring: Gwendolyn Evans, Delane Bracken, Marquita Howerton, Gwen Jeffrey, and Reggie Johnson. We also welcome new actors to LPP, K.G. and Evit Emerson who appeared on the TVOne series Fatal Attraction.

The show will be hosted by Lexington’s own super star Comedienne LCFunny. The show will feature area singers, dancers, a best-dress contest, and a heavy hors d’oeuvres bar. 

Pryor also says, “While we are enjoying the show, you will learn some signs and symptoms when it comes to a family member and/or friend maybe experiencing a mental health crisis. We need to look out for another and understand what we are seeing and get the person medical attention for the disorder.”

Mental illness is a blanket category because there’s at least ten different disorders from anxiety, depression, bipolar, eating, post-traumatic stress disorder, (PTSD) to neurodevelopmental.  According to the National Alliance of Mental Illness, (NAMI) one in five U.S. adults experience mental illness each year.  In Kentucky, 746,000 adults have a mental condition.  To put into perspective that’s more than 10 times the population of Bowling Green, KY. 

NAMI also says that while mental illness affects people of all cultural backgrounds, access to quality mental health services are often out of reach for those in minority communities, leaving many undiagnosed, untreated or undertreated. Its also a known fact that many in the Black community tend not to reach out for assistance.

(Louisville, Ky) In celebration of Juneteenth, Leslie Pryor Productions announces “Murder at the Disco Lounge” on Sunday, June 30th at the Mellwood Arts Center, located at 1860 Mellwood Ave.  There will be two shows.  The first show is from 3:00pm-5:00pm and the second show is from 6:30pm-8:30pm. 

The production takes you to the scene of an incident where the audience helps to solve the mystery. Step into the dazzling world of 1970s nightlife with “Murder at the Disco Lounge,” a gripping mystery set in a bustling disco lounge. Amidst the glitz and glamour, jealousy, ambition, and betrayal unfold in a tale that will keep theatergoers on the edge of their seats The show was created by Leslie Pryor of Leslie Pryor Productions. 

Pryor, who wrote and directed “Murder at the Disco Lounge” says, “It is an incredibly unique, thrilling murder mystery. I encourage audience participation.  It is designed to captivate and thrill the audience. I also invite guests to dress in 70’s attire.” The event will incorporate Black culture through music, dance, and food, creating a truly immersive experience.

Both shows will be hosted by BET’s Sunday Best finalist and Gospel recording artist Johnathan “Jon-John” Johnson. Each show will feature a DJ, a best-dresses contest, plus a three-course dinner and a cash bar.

KENTUCKY NATIVE GIVING BACK BY ANNOUNCING A SCHOLARSHIP FOR THOSE WHO LIVE IN THE BLUEGRASS STATE

ERICKA NICOLE MALONE ENTERTAINMENT WILL AWARD FOUR SCHOLARSHIPS TO KENTUCKY STUDENTS

(Los Angeles, California) Louisville, native who won the 54th Annual NAACP Image Award for Breakthrough Creative in a Motion Picture, Ericka Nicole Malone of Ericka Nicole Malone Entertainment, LLC, announces the creation of the Ericka Nicole Malone Entertainment Scholarship, which includes four scholarships ranging from $250 to $5000. The scholarships are for high school seniors and current college level students attending a Kentucky accredited school.

Ericka Nicole Malone says “I am excited to announce this opportunity. It is important that I give back to my hometown and the first people to believe in my writing ability which has given me so many chances to create produce and direct films you can see today.  Kentucky has a lot of hidden gems and I honestly believe that there are so many young people in the community that just need a chance.  With these scholarships, someone wanting to follow their dreams will now have a chance to fulfill them and I’m honored to assist them along their educational journey.” 

The Ericka Nicole Malone Scholarship can be used for tuition, school fees, books, housing, and food. To be eligible for the scholarship individuals must reside in Kentucky, have at least a 2.5 grade point average, (GPA), on a 4.0 grading scale.

As part of the consideration process. You need to submit an essay, (up to one thousand words) on what you want to pursue as a career and why this scholarship is important in fulfilling that goal. Derby City Gospel Explosion Kicks Off Derby Week

LEADING BY FAITH AND NOT BY SIGHT FEATURING LOUISVILLE’S NATIVE SON D’COREY ‘DC’ JOHNSON AND GOSPEL LEGEND HEZEKIAH WALKER

(Louisville, Ky) DC Entertainment Presents Derby City Gospel Explosion Workshop and Concert.  It takes place in Louisville April 25th through the 27th.

There will be a workshop rehearsal from 6:00pm to 8:30pm on April 25th and 26th with early registration beginning at 5:00pm.  This will take place at Kingdom Land Baptist Church, 1822 South 11th Street.  The workshop is $30.00 per person.  It includes a folder with lyrics to all the songs being performed during the concert.  You must participate in the workshop to be included in the concert.  For information about how you can be a part of the workshop, contact Dionte Colbert at 502-650-6309. 

Then on Saturday, April 27th at St. Stephen Baptist Church, 1018 South 15th Street at 6:00pm with doors opening at 5:00pm you will get to witness the anointed voices of Grammy Award winning Gospel music legend Hezekiah Walker as the special guest for the evening.  America’s Got Talent, Season 18 Finalist and Louisville native D’Corey Johnson will be the host for the event and will perform during the concert.  Also, a part of the evening, Grammy nominated song writer Jason Clayborn will serve as the Clinician and Louisville’s own Daria Raymore will co-host with Johnson. 

Hezekiah Walker is excited to come to the Derby City to worship and spread God’s love and mercy by saying “I’m still here, I’m still alive, I’m still blessed, on my way to destiny because the favor of God is on my life.”

D’Corey Johnson is a talent blessed by God and he wants to show his gratitude to the city that supported him from the beginning of his young career by sharing his growth as an artist by saying “Stop trying to live everybody’s lifestyle. Live your own, and don’t let anyone tell you different.”

Travis Scott announces 2024 tour schedule and Louisville, KY made the list

The411: In 2023, Travis Scott’s Utopia -Circus Maximus Tour was very successful. The hip-hop artist announced that he will be adding Louisville, KY to his 2024 tour.  Save the date of Monday, February 5, 2024, at the KFC Yum Center. (Rescheduled from January 3, 2024).     

Scott was nominated for BEST RAP ALBUM nomination for the 2024 GRAMMY® Awards which will be held on Sunday, February 4, 2024. Just a day before his Louisville show.

World Ballet Series brings Swan Lake to Louisville

(Louisville, KY) The MELANnaire Marketplace holiday market celebrates Kwanzaa.  Starting December 26th Kwanzaa is a time to celebrate the African American culture.  The holiday market welcomes guests into the storefront to celebrate, educate and recognize the rich history and highlight the seven principles.   On Friday,, December 29th from 6:00 pm to 8:30pm we will celebrate Ujamaa the principle of Cooperative Economics.  The program will include a traditional Kwanzaa ceremony and free food.

Starting Monday, December 18th we will be open daily leading up to Christmas Day.  The holiday market will follow the schedule of the mall.  Each week, entrepreneurs restock their inventory and add products and merchandise so that holiday shoppers can have a variety of options.   

The MELANnaire Marketplace holiday market showcases businesses in a storefront setting where their products are on display.  When you visit the holiday market customers will find apparel, handcrafted jewelry, signature cotton candy, popcorn books, toys, accessories, candles plus much more.

(Louisville, KY) The MELANnaire Marketplace holiday market is in full swing welcoming shoppers to their storefront in Mall St. Matthews.  Black-owned businesses update their inventory weekly so guests can visit multiple times as we prepare for Christmas and Kwanzaa.    

The MELANnaire Marketplace holiday market showcases businesses who do not have a storefront and/or a large team.  They assist the entrepreneurs in promoting and selling their products and services. When you visit the holiday market shoppers will find apparel, handcrafted jewelry, signature cotton candy, popcorn books, toys, accessories, candles plus much more.

This weekend, the cast of ‘The Soul of Christmas”, a production of Rush Trowel will be in the marketplace performing.  We invite you to come out shop and enjoy some great entertainment by one of Louisville’s premiere entertainment producers. 

We will also have youth from our future MELANnaire Mentor Program job shadowing as greeters.  Trabue says “We train and help develop job skills at a young age to instill in them the importance of work ethic and how to make money which in turn decreases violence in the community.  We are keeping them busy and showing them opportunities and introducing them to positive role models exceling right here in our community.”

The West Louisville Performing Arts Academy is giving ‘hope’ during the holiday season

Celebrating 34 years with a dinner concert at the University Club

(Louisville, KY) The West Louisville Performing Arts Academy (WLPAA) will host its 34th Hope Awards Dinner Concert at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 2nd at the University Club located at 200 E. Brandeis Street.

This year’s McDaniel Bluitt Hope Award recipient and keynote speaker will be Dr. Kelly McCants, Cardiologist for Norton Medical Group.
Additional awards will be presented during the program to recognize the supporters of WLPAA.

McDaniel Bluitt, Executive Director says “Every year we add youth to the choirs, so this annual gala gives them concert experience, opportunity for family and friends to support them and to highlight leaders and businesses that support us. This year’s speaker, Dr. McCants is a true leader in his field and I want to introduce my students that with hard work and determination anything is possible in whatever field, you chose to be in. We invite you to come out and celebrate our 34th anniversary. Enjoy good music, food, and a motivational speech by Dr. McCants.”

Smoketown Community Land Trust breaking the barriers to help enrich the lives of its residents

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg will participate in the community celebration

(Louisville, KY) The Smoketown Community Land Trust, (SCLT) invites you to its launch and official introduction to the community on Saturday, December 2nd at 1:00 p.m. at the Camp Edwards Community Center located at 701 S. Hancock Street. 

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg, SCLT board members, dignitaries and community leaders will be in attendance and will speak during the program. 

SCLT was developed to empower Smoketown residents and to preserve the rich heritage of the historical Smoketown community when Blacks moved into the community.  In the 1800s post-civil war, freed African Americans migrated to the area seeking economic opportunities, housing, building churches and schools. The community thrived for many years and the Smoketown Community Land Trust will centralize services to better serve the community.   

The SCLT board was created to work with residents and give them space to make direct contributions to plan, design and build sustainable affordable housing ensuring the longevity of the community, creating pathways to homeownership, revitalize community pride and its rich history. 

We would like to thank our partners: Louisville Metro Government, REBOUND, Bates Community Development Corporation, River City Housing, Community Foundation of Louisville, Center for Neighborhoods and Grounded Solutions Network. Representatives from each organization will be present for the launch. 

The program will begin around 1:30 p.m. With the introduction of Mayor Greenberg. Also, during the program the official logo will be unveiled. There will be opportunities to see how people can get involved, learn about its mission. The celebration is free to the public with food, fun, raffles, and entertainment.

MELANnaire Marketplace opens holiday marketplace in Mall St. Matthews

Ribbon-cutting this Friday at 11:00 a.m.

(Louisville, KY) The MELANnaire Marketplace invites you to the ribbon cutting and grand opening of our holiday market on Friday, November 10th at 11:00 a.m. The marketplace will display dozens of local minority businesses all in one space so holiday shoppers can get an opportunity to support multiple small businesses at one large retail space.

At the ribbon cutting you will get the opportunity to meet many of the business owners, and supporters of the MELANnaire Marketplace.  Our confirmed speakers are Dr. F. Bruce Williams of Bates Memorial Church and our partners Dave Christopher, ED with AMPED and Cassandra Webb, Director of Russell: Place of Promise. 

The marketplace will remain open every weekend until January 2, 2024.  The founder of the MELANnaire Marketplace Nachand Trabue says, “Every year we continue to grow in ways I never thought was possible.  When you walk into our storefront there will be displays showcasing Black-owned businesses and their merchandise and/or product.  It’s going to be a mall within a mall.  Each providing unique gift ideas.  I can’t wait for you to stop by and see what the businesses have to offer. This has been truly a labor of love and that’s what entrepreneurship is all about and we at MELANnaire Marketplace are excited about being a part of their journey

According to Louisville Metro Government, Blacks make up 23.4% of the population, and makeup 2.4% when it comes to owning a business.  The MELANnaire Marketplace is working to better that statistic by finding entrepreneurs who have great concepts, and/or products but not the revenue to sustain storefronts and/or full-time staff. 

Each weekend there will be special activities from a trunk show to meeting special guests and giveaways to complete your shopping experience.  The MELANnaire experience will be surrounded by over 130 stores, multi-media cinema and multiple culinary dining options.

The new Miss Black Kentucky USA is crowned this evening in Louisville

The new Miss Black Kentucky USA is crowned this evening in Louisville

This afternoon, family friends and supporters gathered at the Women’s Club of Louisville to see Sophia Crowder of Louisville be crowned Miss Black Kentucky USA.  In the Talented Teen division Helena Gordon of Louisville competed and won and Ciara Johnson of Louisville won in the Ms. Division.  All three winners will represent Kentucky in the Miss Black USA in 2024.

The Queen Mother Foundation will oversee their various appearances and opportunities over the next year so the community will get to know Miss Crowder, Ms. Ciara Johnson, and Talented Teen Helena Gordon. 

Also, this evening we currents queens got an opportunity to thank everyone for the opportunities they received over the past year. 

This afternoon we had a lot to celebrate.  Last year’s winner in the Miss division, Miss Ariel Thompson went on to win Miss Black USA in Washington, DC and will reign for the next 12 months.

Dr. Ashley Anderson, Executive Director of Miss Black Kentucky USA says “Contestants had a great opportunity to showcase their talents and be their authentic selves.  I found twenty wonderful ladies who worked hard to get to this point. When they walked across the stage I, along with family and friends felt a sense of pride.  It’s more than winning a crown and a title but it begins a service of volunteerism, scholarship, and pride of who you are.  This was a special evening for us all and I can’t wait to see what the royal court will do today and beyond.”

Twenty ladies will compete for the titles of Miss, Ms., and Talented Teen Miss Black Kentucky USA this weekend in Louisville

Queen Mother Foundation is excited to announce the date of Miss Black Kentucky USA. On Sunday, October 29th, at 3:00 pm at The Women’s Club of Louisville, 1320 South Fourth Street our community will witness the crowning of three women who will represent Kentucky in Miss Black USA 2024.

After a successful restart in 2022, Kentucky will have five (5) in the talented teen division, six (6) in the Miss. division and nine (9) in the Ms. division competing for the crown. Each looking forward to the experience along with the activities leading up to the October 15th event.

Tickets are now on sale, and you can purchase them on Eventbrite. We have provided a link for promotion. Miss Black Kentucky 2023.

We are just weeks away from crowning the next Miss Black Kentucky

UPDATED:  DUE TO CIRCUMSTANCES OUT OF OUR CONTROL THE DATE AND VENUE OF THE 2023 PAGEANT HAS CHANGED

The new date for the pageant is October 27th-29th.  The winners will be announced on Sunday, October 29th at 3:00 pm at The Women’s Club of Louisville, 1320 South Fourth Street in downtown Louisville. 

Twenty-seven ladies will compete for the titles of Miss, Ms., and Talented Teen Miss Black Kentucky USA

United Crown Productions is excited to announce the date of Miss Black Kentucky USA. On Sunday, October 15th, at 3:00 pm at Memorial Auditorium our community will witness the crowning of three women who will represent Kentucky in Miss Black USA 2024.

After a successful restart in 2022, Kentucky will have six (6) in the talented teen division, eight (8) in the Miss. division and thirteen (13) in the Ms. division competing for the crown. Each looking forward to the experience along with the activities leading up to the October 15th event.

Tickets are now on sale, and you can purchase them on Eventbrite. We have provided a link for promotion. Miss Black Kentucky 2023.

Last year’s winner in the Miss division, Miss Ariel Thompson went on to win Miss Black USA in Washington, DC and will reign for the next 12 months.

Dr. Ashley Anderson, Executive Director of Miss Black Kentucky USA says “I am so happy to give women of color the opportunity. It is more than just a pageant but a chance for these young ladies to showcase themselves. This is something the community can be proud of because we are helping prepare our future leaders. The contestants are free to be who they are as they embrace their heritage. I invite you to come out and support them as they compete for scholarships which will help with their future career goals.”

The Palm Room and Melt 502 create a pop-up restaurant

Melt Wednesdays in West Louisville 

(Louisville, KY) As part of Black Business Month, The Palm Room is collaborating with a poplar eatery while they find a new venue.  Starting on Wednesday, August 16th, The Palm Room is partnering with Melt 502.  They will open their kitchen so their customers can enjoy their menu specialties which includes deep fried egg rolls with soul food fillings to chicken wings and great side dishes. 

From noon to midnight patrons of The Palm Room and the customers of Melt 502 will come out to support both businesses. The Palm Room understands that collaboration and partnership is the key to economic growth, development, and longevity of a business.

Donnie Adkins, owner of The Palm Room says, “Stability and consistency is vital to have a successful business.  Working together is good business for both of us as entrepreneurs. We are giving both our customers something new, and we hope you come out the next month and support both businesses.” 

Melt 502 created a large following in South Louisville with their brick n’ mortar.  With that success they are looking for additional opportunities to serve other communities such as West Louisville as they continue to grow their brand. 

Save the following dates where Melt 502 will be working out of the kitchen at The Palm Room from 12 noon to 12 midnight with a limited menu serving some of their favorite items:

Louisville native Miss Ariel Thompson crowned Miss Black USA

MEDIA ALERT

(Washington, DC) Tonight, in Washington the Miss Black USA crowned a winner.  Louisville, Kentucky native Ariel Thompson will represent the scholarship pageant. Her reign begins this evening and Thompson will hold the title for one year.

For the first time in more than ten years, Kentucky was represented in the pageant.  Miss Ariel Thompson, Ms. Dominique Joy Thompson and Nia Franklin all travelled to Washington to compete. 

We would like to congratulate Miss Talented Teen Nia Franklin.  This evening, she placed first runner-up.  Ms. Dominique Joy Thompson won the fitness competition in the Ms. Division. 

Dr. Ashley Anderson says “I’m so excited about Ariel’s win.  She earned this great honor, and we are celebrating this huge accomplishment.  I’m excited for all three of our delegates.  Nia and Joy represented their divisions and gave us momentum heading into this year’s Miss Black Kentucky.  It’s a great feeling.  This was a great evening.  To hear the audience cheering for the young ladies brought tears to my eyes. These ladies have worked hard and represented this pageant in a grand way.”

The birth of the Miss Black Kentucky USA franchise is one that will have an impact on young women of Kentucky for generations to come. Beyond the scholarships that will be awarded in Miss, Ms., and Teen divisions, the life skills programming will be sure to elevate the minds and lives of all participants. It will groom leaders, shed light on issues of concern in the community, and meaningfully fund the educational pursuits of Black women in Kentucky. It is my intent that this program becomes the largest scholarship funding source for young women of color across Kentucky.

Kentucky Native Announces A Scholarship Fund To Help Aspiring Artists

ERICKA NICOLE MALONE ENTERTAINMENT WILL AWARD FOUR SCHOLARSHIPS TO KENTUCKY STUDENTS INTERESTED IN THE ARTS

(Los Angeles, California) Louisville, native and 2023 NAACP Image Award winner Ericka Nicole Malone of Ericka Nicole Malone Entertainment, LLC, announces the creation of the Ericka Nicole Malone Essay Writing Mentorship which includes four scholarships ranging from $250 to $5000. The scholarships are for high school seniors and current college level students majoring and/or minoring in arts in a Kentucky accredited school.

Ericka Nicole Malone says “I am excited to announce this opportunity. It is important that I give back to my hometown and the first people to believe in my writing ability which has given me so many chances to create produce and direct films you can see today.  Kentucky has a lot of hidden gems and I honestly believe that there is so many creative writers in the community that just need a chance.  With these scholarships, someone wanting to follow their dreams will now have a chance to fulfill them and that is what made me create this initiative so I can follow them along their career.” 

The Ericka Nicole Malone Scholarship can be used for tuition, school fees, books, housing, and food. To be eligible for the scholarship individuals must reside in Kentucky, have at least a 2.5 grade point average, (GPA), on a 4.0 grading scale, already enrolled in the College of Arts and/or accepted into an accredited college institution, performing arts school, trade or vocational school that has an arts program.

As part of the consideration process. You need to submit an essay, (up to one thousand words) on what you want to pursue in the arts and why this scholarship is important. Submit your essay to info@vippcommunications.com. Your deadline is August 4, 2023. Recipients will be announced on August 22, 2023.

Malone attended the Youth Performing Arts School, (YPAS), graduate of Manual High, a JCPS school is a successful writer, director, and executive producer. He latest award-winning project is “Remember ME: The Mahalia Jackson Story” starring Ledisi, Columbus Short, Janet Hubert, Keith David, Wendy Raquel Robinson, and Keith Robinson.
